Chapter Seven: Unfortunate Interruptions
A month, it’s only been a month since I figured out what Danielle meant by “whatever you have to tell yourself” or whatever it was she said. I wish I didn’t have these feelings for Pete; it’d make things so much easier. Maddie had awaked to Fall Out Boy playing on the radio. What is the radio trying to tell me? Maddie made her way into her bathroom after turning the radio up; she hummed along to the song. Staring at the mirror, she began comparing herself to Danielle. Her perfect brown hair and bright blue eyes compared to my randomly highlighted hair and slightly dull green-blue eyes. How can I even consider thinking that he would want to be with someone like me over her. Maddie had been thinking about it a lot, being in a relationship with Pete; but she knew that it was out of the question, that he was already in a relationship with some one and not to mention that he was her boss. Hearing a bang on the door she turned the shower on and yelled that she would be out in a minute.
It felt like déjà vu when walking into the kitchen her friends staring at her with smiles on their faces, yet she couldn’t help the smile that came across her own face. “What? Why are you two smiling so much?”
“I was thinking, so I have this date tonight right?” at Maddie’s nod Brylee continued, “well he called to ask me if I had a single friend that wouldn’t mind going on a double date with him and his brother, and I told him I had two single friends.”
“So you and Trista are going on a double date tonight?” Maddie asked naïvely and even before the whole question was out of her mouth Trista was doubled over in laughter.
“Yea right me go on a double date? Wow Maddie your sense of humor has gotten a lot better since the last time we talked.” She smirked at Maddie, “so that means if it’s not me than there’s only one other friend that she could be taking.”
“Oh no, no, no, no. I can’t I have to work and stuff.” Maddie couldn’t come up with a really good lie but hoped Brylee would relent anyways. But by the look on her face she knew she wasn’t going to. “Bry the last time we had a double date it ended badly. Remember your date made a move on me and you didn’t talk to me for like three weeks because you were so angry. Trista tell her, I’m not doing this.” Trista snorted.
“Please Maddie, Please, I really like this guy. He’s sweet, funny, hott, and he asked me out!!! Please Maddie, look we’ll do the ear tug thing if you wanna leave. You tug we leave.” Brylee put a huge smile on her face awaiting Maddie’s answer.
“Fine, only if I can get Pete to let me leave early, when is the date supposed to be?”
“Tonight,” Brylee mumbled into her cup.
“Tonight! What? Man I have to ask Pete first to make sure I can get back early enough to get ready.”
“Or you can get ready at Pete’s and just meet Brylee at the restaurant, that way if your not having fun you can just leave.” Trista smiled at the suggestion she was quite proud of. Maddie scowled at the suggestion, getting ready at Pete’s wasn’t the best situation for her. “Oh and don’t worry we already packed you something to wear for tonight. Just grab the bag by the door on your way out” Before Maddie could try another excuse Brylee and Trista walked back to their bedrooms to get ready for the day.
“Man, guys please don’t make me do this; I’m not good with dating or men. I think I hate them,” Maddie screamed at the girls through their doors. Brylee snorted in response, “Ok, so not hate them for obvious reasons but other than sex or work I’d rather not deal with them at all.”
“Well maybe you can get some sex tonight and then we don’t have to deal with your wound up frustration, if ya know what I mean.” Trista had peeked her head out into the hallway and winked at Maddie. “You better go or you’re going to be late for work!” As she shut her door Maddie let out a frustrated scream.
“Don’t be late tonight, we’re suppose to meet them at 7:30 sharp!!” Brylee screamed through her door and at Maddie as she grabbed the gym bag waiting for her and slammed the front door shut. After getting ready for the day, Trista walked out of her room and knocked at Brylee’s door.
“I was thinking about our bet and I wanna change it a little bit.” She walked pass Brylee and into the room without being invited in. Brylee rolled her hazel eyes at Trista and left the door open as she continued putting her make up on.
“Oh yea? Why because you know your going to lose?” Trista stuck her tongue out at her
and Brylee continued, “Ok fine, what do you propose?”
“Well since we both know she obviously has feelings for Pete, I’ll pay you the 100 but I
bet you double that they kiss within the next two weeks and if they don’t I’ll pay you two
hundred.”
“Two weeks? Trista, Maddie isn’t that horny.” Brylee pulled her mostly brown hair up, pulling a section of the blonde highlights down to frame her face, turning towards Trista, “But if that’s the bet you wanna make then hell yea I’ll bet you that.” Trista took the hundred out of her pocket and shook Brylee’s hand with it.

So how do I tell him that I need to leave early to go on a date? Maddie hadn’t come up with a really believable lie or excuse and her hope was dwindling. I’m going to have to tell him that I have a date. I mean it’s not like he’s my boyfriend, he’s just my boss and I’ll tell him straight out. If I can’t go I’ll call Brylee.
Unlocking the front door with the key Pete gave her when she started working for him she let herself in quietly, trying to put the gym bag into the closet before anyone noticed.
“So uh, what are you moving in now?” Her heart started beating really fast and she couldn’t control the words that started coming out.
“My best friend is making me go on a double date with her tonight. I mean well she wants me to but I had to make sure that it was ok with you first,” looking at him she saw his eye brow raised. “not that you care if I go out on a date, it’s just I have to meet her there by 7:30 and I’m suppose to work till 10 so ya know, what do you think?”
“I think you had way too much coffee this morning, but about leaving early? Yea I guess that’s fine.” Pete couldn’t help envying the guy she was going out on a date with. He wouldn’t mind taking Maddie to a nice restaurant where they could get lost in each other for hours, what the hell? Lost in each other? When did I turn into a sappy romance novel? Although I wouldn’t mind spending time alone with her. “I didn’t get a chance to tell you that Vicky-T, she’s a really close friend of mine and Aly just adores her, is going to be in town for the day. She brought my dog, Hemingway, from Chicago here so you and Aly have a protector when I go on that business trip next week.” He was dwelling too much on the whole Maddie going on a date thing and it was beginning to make him angry. Why should I let her off early to go on a date? Especially since I started having these feeling for her but then is it fair to say no because I like her even though I have a girlfriend. Before Maddie could speak, there was loud barking and the sound of an animal running towards them.
“Hemingway, stop, Hemmy please stop I’m trying to put the pink bow behind your ear.” Aly was running down the hallway after the dog with Vicky in pursuit of her.
“Aly baby, stop running before you hurt yourself.” Vicky yelled after her. Maddie couldn’t help the jealousy that came over her when Aly slowed down and started walking, “Thank you sweet heart.” Maddie tried to cover the feelings she was having up by introducing herself.
“Hi I’m Maddie; you must be Vicky-T.” Shaking her hand she noticed the way that Aly stayed attached to Vicky nodding her head as Maddie talked. “I have heard a lot about you from Aly and from some of the guys. Everyone seems to love you.” She tried hiding the disdain in her voice. Not that she had any reason to actually dislike Vicky; it’s just that Aly and I were just starting to really get along, and now another fucking obstacle in my way. Sometimes I wonder if it’s ever going to be easier. Before she could answer, a dog had come to stand in front of Maddie almost knocking her down with the way he shook his non-existent tail, which was actually just the whole back side of his body. She leaned down to pet him on the head; before she had even started he had licked her whole lower right arm.
“Thank you Hemingway! Your so cute,” She kissed him on the head and turned back towards her human companions, “So your sticking around today Vicky?”
“Yea, Pete has to go meet up with his band but my boys are laying some beats with them and I haven’t gotten to see Aly in a while so do you mind if I hang out? I’ll be out of here by 5 to meet up with my boyfriend.” Maddie knew that saying no would not only be rude but put her on the shit list of both of the Wentz’s so she nodded and smiled pretending like it didn’t bother her at all. Which naturally it shouldn’t because Vicky had been here first; I just want Aly to be comfortable with me alone and I feel like we’re slowly progressing backwards, back to when she hid from me. Pete promised to be home by six thirty so Maddie could get to her date on time and then left to meet up with Patrick, Gabe and Ryland.
“So what do we want to do today?” Maddie asked turning towards the two other females.
“SHOPPING!!” Vicky-T and Aly both screamed at the same time, unaware that shopping was the one thing that Maddie hated doing, almost more than going to the doctors.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Six forty five, seriously Pete, you could have called and told me you were running late. Maddie was pacing in living room, after Vicky left Aly became a downer. The shopping actually turned out to be fun and Maddie got along with Vicky a lot better than she had originally thought she would have. When she had to leave though, Aly through a tantrum and begged her to stay but Vicky stood her ground; which is something that Maddie condones her for. Glad that someone else can say no to the child other than herself. Aly spent the last hour sulking in the living room watching reruns of Boy Meets World. Now it’s my turn to throw a tantrum Pete is 15 minutes late which means that I’m going to be late for a date that I don’t even want to go on. Tapping her toes, she was starting to get really irritated, she was dressed in the black spaghetti strapped, right about the knee, slightly but not overbearingly tight cleavage bearing dress that her friends picked out and a pair of heels that she wished she wasn’t wearing and she wasn’t even sure if she was going to make it on time. She saw the headlights of a car pull up and she settled down a little bit.
“You look pretty, Maddie. Is the boy you’re going out with special?” Maddie was glad Aly said something to her; she had begun to miss the sound of her voice. She crouched down to be eye level with her.
“I don’t know sweetie, I haven’t even met him before, it’s kind of a blind date.” Hearing the door open she stood back to her full length and turned towards Pete. He was seemed to look her over once or twice and Maddie wasn’t sure of what to say.
“Sorry I was late,” Pete cleared his throat not really sorry at all. The more he thought about it the more frustrated he got about Maddie going out on a date. My Maddie, he kept thinking and then trying to correct himself, no my nanny, not my Maddie, she can go out with whoever she wants. He had finally convinced himself of those exact words and then he walked into the living room and saw her. She looks amazing, from the sexy heels to the way the dress clings to all of her curves just perfectly, to the way her hair is curled.
“Beautiful” Pete whispered the word without even realizing it.
“What? Did you say something?” Maddie thought she heard it but she didn’t want to get her hopes up.
“I said you look beautiful, whoever your date is tonight is very lucky.” Maddie smiled and then frowned and cursed under her breathe.
“Thank you but I gotta go so have fun tonight and I’ll see you tomorrow alrighty?” She leaned down, kissed Aly on the forehead. When Aly didn’t try to move away, Pete and Maddie were both a little shocked. Aly smiled, told Maddie to have fun and went back to the couch to watch High School Musical 2 for the fifth time in the last two weeks. Maddie smiled at Pete, said goodnight and walked out of the house.

The next morning she quickly got ready for work, walked out into the kitchen to get some coffee and pretended like her friends weren’t there, especially Brylee.
“Maddie, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know he was going to act like that.” When Maddie didn’t answer, Trista raised a questioning eyebrow at both of them.
“She’s not talking to me because last night’s date didn’t go so well.”
“HA!” was the only thing Maddie had the ability to say without tearing Brylee a new one.
“So what happened?” Trista was curious now and slightly glad she passed on the whole double date thing, at this point she was talking to Maddie but Maddie ignored her.
“Well first Maddie was like ten minutes late, then when she got there everything was going well until Jacob, her date, told her that she was a snob, she wasn’t very pretty and that she needs a boob job and a new nose if she ever wants to keep a man interested in her.” Trista started choking on the coffee she had just taken a sip of.
“What did Maddie do?”
“I poured the 200 dollar bottle of wine he bought to impress us so much all over his head before he even got to taste it, then I told him that he looked like a horses ass, tugged on my ear and left.” Maddie calmly stated looking at neither of her friends. “I gotta go to work, see you later.” She walked out before either of them could respond.
“So it was bad huh?” Trista asked in a joking matter.
“Yea it was worse than bad. I couldn’t believe the things he was saying and his brother was just agreeing with everything. I mean she has every right to be mad at me.” Brylee shrugged hoping that Maddie would be able to let it go after a couple of days. She smiled at Trista and informed her she was going back to bed.

Pete had worked himself into a frustrated non sleeping frenzy last night; he couldn’t stop thinking about the way Maddie looked in that black dress. Her perfectly curved body and the way she seemed a little self conscious in it. It majorly turned him on, and then his mind turned to the fact that she was wearing it on a date with some guy she didn’t even know. That same guy was appreciating her assets in the same way Pete had when he first walked in last night. That’s when he got angry and he couldn’t stop the emotions he was feeling.
He waited in the foyer for Maddie and when she opened the door everything he had wanted to say left his mind. He brushed rudely passed her mumbled a goodbye and walked out. Surprised by his actions Maddie cocked her head to the side as she watched him walk to his car.
It was now ten o’clock at night, Maddie tucked Aly in at 8:00 and Pete hadn’t called to say goodnight, which was very unlike him and kinda upset Aly. Maddie didn’t know exactly what was going on but she was going to find out. Well she had planned to until Pete showed up and he was drunk. Drunk enough for Patrick and Andy to walk him to the door and make sure he got inside before leaving.
“Pete? What the hell, this is why you didn’t call and say goodnight to Aly? You had to get drunk?” Maddie was confused and more than a little angry.
“Well you went out last night so I figured that I was allowed to go out and have some fun myself.”
“What I did last night was anything but fun, and what you did tonight was dunk your whole body into huge barrel full of tobacco and beer.” Pete smirked; the look in his eye was almost dangerous.
“Do you ever think about me?” He saw the blush rise onto Maddie’s face, “ya know in a more than I’m just your boss or friend way?” He slurred his words and Maddie didn’t know exactly what was going on but she decided she needed to get out before she said or did anything stupid.
“I’m not exactly sure what you mean,” She was grabbing her book off the counter, her coat off the chair and was about to grab her purse off of the stool when a pair of hands turned her around to face the owner of them. Pete was suddenly a lot more sober and wasn’t sure that he should be doing this; all he knew was that he wanted more than anything to feel her pressed against him; feel her lips on his, kissing him. He slipped his arms around her waist, pulling her as close as he physically could. “Pete, I should go before something happens that you’re going to regret in the morning.” She wriggled around trying to get out of his arms but before she could he had run one of his hands down the side of her face cupping her chin gently.
“I’m addicted to the way I feel when I think of you.” Maddie knew the lyric; it was from one of her favorite songs. It was the same thing that broke her need to get away from him, instead she lay her own hand on his cheek, moving it around to the back of his head pulling his face closer to hers, she closed her eyes, and took a deep breath.
