Cara stood numbly crying not even noticing the others in the room or the soft murmur of crying or the music as she stood by the casket. She reached out and lightly rested her hand on Mikey’s cheek before quickly pulling it back as if burned. The funeral people had done a good job of fixing the discoloration of his face from having hung himself, but he still looked too fake for Cara’s tastes. She just wanted Mikey to be just asleep and to wake up and joke with her, or to walk back into the house and hear him and Frankie arguing over the video games. But she knew that this time he had gotten it right. Third time’s a charm in suicide as well, she guessed. Although she had been told that given the way they had found Mikey that he hadn’t done it right, causing him to suffer as he died.
Cara jumped as she felt a pair of arms wrap around her, and frantically turned to see who it was, having forgotten that there were others around. When she saw Gee’s tear stained face, she turned into his arms and sobbed again. She wrapped her arms around Gee’s waist as they both cried, Gee for his brother and Cara for her best friend who had been almost like a brother to her. Gee and Mikey’s mom had come for a few minutes before having to leave because she was inconsolable, and they all thought it would be best if she wasn’t there to see Mikey be buried that afternoon.
“Come on, Cara. You need to sit down and come away from him.” Gee went to pull her back away from the casket, where she had been standing for nearly fifteen minutes, sobbing silently to herself.
Everyone had gotten worried about Cara, Frank was sitting numbly in a corner not talking to anyone, just staring at her with a sad frown on his face. He had been the one who had gotten to her first after she had screamed, finding Mikey dead, and the image was still bored into his brain, and he had no doubt it was still in Cara’s mind as well. Frank had tried to get Cara to come away from the casket earlier, but it was as if she hadn’t even realized he was there.
“No, Gee! I can’t leave him. Don’t you understand? I did this to him! I killed Mikey! This is all my fault!” Cara pulled away from Gee, in hysterics. She held all the blame on herself for Mikey’s death, knowing that he had killed himself because of her relationship with Frankie. It was how things had went after the devastation with Liberty, and now she was the cause of it. How could any of them forgive her? How could she live with herself after killing her best friend? The answer was simple, she couldn’t.
Gerard was confused as to what to do about Cara. She seemed to seriously believe that she had been the cause of Mikey’s suicide, and although he didn’t want to make it sound that way, he believed that Cara’s relationship with Frank had been what had sent Mikey back into his depression and suicidal behavior. Just this time he had done it. Mikey was gone forever, and Gee was having the hardest time coping with it. So needless to say, Cara’s hysterics weren’t the most helpful at the moment.
Frank saw Cara’s hysterics and shook his head with a frown. They didn’t need this right now. Mikey didn’t need this at his funeral. Frank stood and started to Cara, fully intent on taking her outside, even if he had to pick her up and forcibly carry her outside. But before he could reach Cara, he stopped dead in his tracks, a frown crossing his face. “What the hell do you think you’re doing here?”
Gerard and Cara turned to see whoever Frank was talking to, and Cara gasped at the sight. It was Ray, standing there in a black suit and hair brushed out to where it wasn’t as out of control as it normally was. He looked genuinely sad for them, and he moved towards Cara to give her his condolences, but was stopped by Frank stepping up between Ray and Cara.
“I said, what the hell do you think you’re doing here? You didn’t even know Mikey, you asshole. What do you think you’re going to do, just come in here and try to break up our family? Get out before something bad happens.” Frank was now more than angry, he was nearly seeing red. He had already disliked Ray, but the grief surrounding Mikey’s suicide only seemed to heighten the hatred.
Ray held his hands up in a surrendering motion. “I’m not here to cause trouble with you, Frank. I admit I didn’t know Mikey that well, but I just wanted to come and tell Cara and Mikey’s family that I was sorry to hear of his death. It was merely a friendly gesture, nothing more. But since I see things aren’t exactly welcoming, I’ll just be on my way.”
Ray moved and gave Cara a light one-armed hug and left a light kiss on her forehead before turning to leave, only to be pulled back by Frank’s hand on his arm in the foyer. Frank glared at Ray, his voice just barely above a whisper. “I don’t want to even hear of you being around my girlfriend ever again, or it will be the last thing you do. Trust me on this, Ray Toro, you will not live.”
At the small threat, Ray merely laughed before leaning over to whisper in Frank’s ear, clearly not intimidated by the shorter guy. “Cara is not your girlfriend. Trust me on this, Frank Iero, she is not yours.” With that cryptic remark, Ray pulled his arm out of Frank’s grasp and walked out of the funeral home and back to his car, pulling his cell phone out and quickly dialing a number as he got into his car.
Cara watched numbly as Frank rushed off after Ray, no doubt to pull some manly stunt and try to warn him away from her. She sighed, not wanting to think about the idea of possibly losing another of her friends because of her relationship with Frankie. Then an idea hit her. It wasn’t her fault. It was Frank’s. He was the one who had initiated their first time together without shutting the door. He was the one who had left her to sleep on the living room floor with him, knowing that Mikey was upset over the relationship. And now Frankie was trying to drive Ray away from her. She didn’t think that she could stand to lose another friend, especially so close to having just lost her best friend, forever.
Gerard watched as the little drama between Frank and Ray occurred, wishing that they could have chosen a better time to have their macho war over Cara. After all, in case either of them cared, this was the funeral for not only his brother, but Cara’s best friend. If they were trying to win her approval and affections, they might need to rethink their methods of doing such, or at least their timing.
“Cara, come on, let’s go sit down over here and get away from the crowds for a little while. I think I’ve heard enough condolences for the time being.” Gee wrapped an arm around Cara’s shoulders and pulled her off towards a small couch set up in the corner of the room, sighing as she curled up next to him, resting her head on his shoulder. They had always been close, but perhaps it was even more so now that they were both bound by the same grief over Mikey’s death. It was as if a part of them was forever gone, and they both clung to each other for the reassurance that they needed because of the void.
Jesse walked up and smiled weakly at Gerard. He had told her about his brother’s suicide and she had automatically apologized profusely, wanting so much to hold him and help him feel better, but knowing that there wasn’t any way for her to. “Gee, I’m so sorry. I know I’ve already told you and such, but I just wanted to let you know that I’m always around for anything. And I hope that you’re not still upset with me for what I said the other day. I was angry and said some things that I didn’t really mean to say.”
Gerard looked up and returned Jesse’s small smile, feeling bad that she seemed to think that he was still upset with her over their argument the other day. He moved his arm from around Cara’s shoulders and stood, frowning a bit as Cara just sat there still looking frozen as if still in shock over the entire situation. Gee sighed and took Jesse’s arm, leading her off towards the door so they could talk without being surrounded by people or having people come up to Gee and telling him how sorry they were or similar sympathies.
As soon as they reached the outside, Gerard stepped out into the light rain, needing to feel the soothing sensation of the rain on his face more than anything at the moment. He turned back to Jesse and sighed before pulling her into his arms, his lips finding hers out of instinct and necessity. He needed something to make him feel alive at the moment. All the talk and being around death made him feel as if his own humanity was slipping away, and he desperately needed something to remind him that he was alive and not a corpse that just happened to be able to walk around, while his brother was condemned to a full death.
Jesse instantly molded herself against Gee as he pulled her to him. She returned his kiss, knowing instinctively that he needed the warmth of someone alive with him for the moment. Hell, she felt like she would go crazy in there if she didn’t get out and have some real human contact, and she had only been in the room for a few minutes, unlike Gee who had probably been there the entire hour already. So, despite the rain falling down making her hair and jacket wet, she stood and kissed Gerard as if both their lives depended on it. And in a way, it seemed as if that was the truth.
Gee was the first to pull apart, holding Jesse close to him, reveling in the feeling of being alive again. With her something was different and he didn’t feel like a zombie just standing around thanking people for their concerns. With her he felt like an actual person, who could keep going with life, despite the horror of having lost his baby brother.
Jesse realized that they had been standing out in the rain for a while when she felt the rain trickling down the front of her chest, despite having worn a high-necked blouse and jacket. She was almost completely soaked, and Gerard was about in about the same condition as she was. “Gee, maybe we should go back inside now. I think we’re both pretty well soaked and it might raise some eyebrows. Besides, you shouldn’t be hiding away at your brother’s funeral.”
Gee shook his head, frowning. “On the contrary, I shouldn’t be at my brother’s funeral. He shouldn’t be dead, Jess. He just shouldn’t. But you’re right. We should get back inside. Mom and Dad had to leave, so it’s the least I can do for Mikes. But can you promise to stay with me for the rest of the day? I hate to sound like a little kid, but I don’t want to be alone in this wash of death.”
“Of course I’ll stay with you. The store is closed today, so no work worries, and you should know I love spending time with you.” Jesse slipped her hand into his as they walked back into the funeral home, both hating the oppressive feeling of death hanging in the very air around them.
Cara sat in a daze staring blankly ahead of her, not registering anything. First she had lost Mikey, and now she was faced with the realization that Frankie was trying to take away Ray as well. The one person she had thought to truly love had taken her best friend and was working steadily on taking away another friend. It was as if her life had been shattered again. Her mind seemed fragmented and she didn’t know what to do. It was the same feeling she had when her mom and brother had been killed, only this time it seemed to be her fault. The person she believed she loved had caused Mikey to kill himself, and now he was trying to take her away from her last connection to her more carefree past.
“Penguin? Are you okay?” Frank walked over to the couch where he had found Cara sitting as if in shock. Frank lightly sat beside her and pulled her into his arms, although he frowned as she didn’t seem to even register that he was there. He had only seen her this far in shock once, and that was when she had heard that her mother and brother had been killed. They had just gotten out of the astronomy class that they had shared when Cara had gotten the voicemail. She had collapsed and Frank had been the only one around to catch her and hear the news. He hadn’t been able to get her to respond for several days after hearing the news. The only person who seemed to be able to get her out of her daze had been Mikey. But that wouldn’t be happening this time around, it was obvious.
“Cara? Penguin? Cara Lyn? Cara Lyn Morgan, answer me!” Frank began almost screaming at her, hating that he was getting no response or even remote sign of her recognizing that he was even there. He was starting to panic and didn’t know what to do about Cara. He was worried that she had completely gone away into her own head.
Frank saw Gee walk back in and hopped up before rushing over to Gee. “Gee, you have to help me. Cara’s not even responding. I can’t get her to do anything. I even used her full name. I think she might have gone into shock. I don’t know what else to do, Gee. You have to help me with this. I can’t lose her.”
Gee could tell that Frank was panicking over Cara’s behavior, but Gee also knew that Cara was suffering a lot, and she might not even realize what was going on around her. He had realized that about Cara. When she became focused on something, she didn’t realize anything else going on around her, or even her own health and such. He had known her to go for almost an entire week without eating, just because she was busy working on a major project for work. It was frightening to say the least, but that was something he had known and come to cope with about Cara. Sometimes she just blanked and focused completely on one thing.
Gee walked back over to the couch where Cara sat in the same position that he had left her in almost an hour ago. He sat down lightly beside her so as not to shock her and cause her to panic. He had seen that happen once, and it wasn’t a pretty sight to see. “Cara, babe, are you okay?” Gee reached over and lightly gave her shoulder a shake, smiling slightly when she jumped and turned to look at him, confusion on her face.
“What? Oh, it’s just you, Gee. I thought for a second I would come back and find all this a weird nightmare. But obviously it’s not. I think I need some air. Have you seen my cell phone? I want to make a few calls while I’m outside.” Cara began frantically looking around for her purse that had her cell phone and keys in it.
Frank held out her purse and his hand to help her up. “Here you go, Penguin. I’ll head out too. In case you need someone.” Frank wasn’t about to let her out of his sight again, now that she seemed to have come back to them from her world of shock.
Cara shook her head with a frown. No, that would ruin her ideas. “No, that’s okay Frankie. I just want some time to myself. And I have to make a few calls.”
Before he could object, Cara jumped up and headed outside, trying her best to keep from looking panicked or rushed. As soon as she reached the outside, she inhaled deeply taking in the fresh air and smell of rain. She stopped for only a moment before heading for her car, glad that she had drove herself, having refused the offers from both Gee and Frankie. She quickly got into her car and started it and raced out of the parking lot, heading back to their house to grab her overnight travel bag and going somewhere she had never thought to return.
