Persephone stepped out of the elevators and literally ran into Frank as he seemed to be getting into the elevator. “Whoa there, cowboy, didn’t I tell you to stay put? I could have sworn I at least implied that you stay put.”
“I’ve been locked in a hospital for five years, Persy. I need social interaction. Your secretary gave me her key and pass code to get to the lab downstairs so that I can possibly help your friend, Rick, right? Anyway, so I could possibly help him with a cure.”
“What are you qualifications?” Persephone went into business mode, having forgotten most of what her friends did before the fire, she needed to know that he could handle the work in the lab.
“I was a chemist, Persy. Remember?”
Persephone hit herself in the forehead and grabbed the pass from him, shaking her head and making a beeline for a small office at the back of the hallway labeled, “Personnel.” She walked right past the people at the desk and started to type away at a computer at the back of the room, pushing print and pulling out a card identical to the one Nia had given Frank, though it had his name on it.
“Access to all lab levels. The pass code is the code we used to use when we had that little clubhouse when we were little and Gerard insisted we put the password in binary code. You do remember the code, don’t you?”
“Of course. Thanks, Persephone. I would really hate to be stuck in your apartment all the time. I needed something to do. Maybe working to find a cure will help me with my cabin fever.”
Persephone sighed, feeling like she was about to break his heart. “Actually, Rick has already found a cure and administered it to a great many people. He does, however, need help replicating it and putting it into tranquilizer darts for tomorrow night.”
“I don’t care what I’m doing as long as I’m helping. I’ll talk to you later.” He gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and ran out of the room like a kid who had been told the ice cream truck was coming up the road.
She shook her head and started to make her way back to her office, colliding with Count Delano himself. “Count.” She was short and made sure her knew that she had other places to go, but he still managed to grab her arm with his always glove clad one.
“I need a word with you, Bryar.”
“I believe you just had seven with me, Count. Now if you don’t mind, I have to get upstairs to my husband and brother.” She felt the grip he had on her tightened and her anger flared. “Let of go of my arm.”
“I will not release you until you speak with me, Bryar. It is of great importance.”
“What’s about to be of great importance to you is my fist in your face. Let go of my fucking arm …” Persephone could feel that piece of her she had heard to fear coming slowly to the service. Her eyes went a solid green as she looked at him and he flinched, but didn’t let go.
“I have knowledge of a cure that might be profitable to this company.”
“Really now? Does that cure make the vampires in question completely human? Because I’m sure it doesn’t. There has never been a cure like that. Until now. I don’t need you cure. That’s what I have Rick for.” Persephone yanked her arm, but he pulled her back to him, harder.
“If you don’t want my cure, at least take my advice. Do not go back to Contract Valley. Only death and sorrow lies for you there.”
“What do you know about death, Count? Honestly. I held my daughter and my husband as there life left their bodies. I have my husband back, but it’ll never be as it was. My brothers and best friends all disappeared when I escaped from Contract Valley. I have found all of them, though my eldest brother is a vampire and his closest friend is a fucking demon. Don’t talk to me about death and sorrow.” She yanked yet again, but he remained gripped to her.
She had had enough of the Count and centered all her weight, dropping onto the floor with all her strength, pulling him over her head. His grip on her arm slipped and he went flying into the wall of a nearby cubicle wall, knocking it over. There was a chain reaction and all the walls began to fall one by one, leaving the scene open for all to see.
“You bitch! How dare you! I am nobility!” The count stood in a dizzying tirade of fury. She stood, feet apart, and smiled sweetly at him. He was not buying it. “I should take away all the funding I’ve been giving this God-forsaken business. You freaks should all be killed off.”
“Freaks? Oh no you didn’t.” Nia walked around the corner just as he spoke about her friends, those she considered family, in the office.
Persephone’s hair stood on end as an invisible wind seemed to blow through Nia’s hair and clothes. She had known from the time she had hired Nia, that she had gypsy and witch ancestors, but she had never thought Nia had those abilities. She now knew that her assistant, partner, and friend had been hiding what she really was.
Backing against a wall, Persephone closed her ears as Nia let out a scream that threw several of the remaining cubicle walls past the count. There was a moment for concern for those who had been in the cubicles, but that was soon forgotten when they’re faces could be seen in the windows of the offices across the way.
Nia had her hands held out at her sides and her hair was standing up all around her, lighting shooting from her eyes. Persephone knew that look on her friend’s face, having seen it hundreds of times when she actually took someone to hunt with her. She did a ground roundhouse kick and knocked the Count to his feet as a lighting bolt hit where he had been standing. “Stay here.” She didn’t know why she had saved him. He was an asshole and deserved what he got, but Nia would have some major explaining to do if he were to be killed.
Persephone walked over to her friend and was shot back into a wall, hit in the chest with a bolt of lightening. She heard the gasps of the other people before she went unconscious, if just for a second. She stood, as soon as the slight dizziness passed and popped her neck, turning solid green eyes to Nia. She looked down at her chest and the whole in her shirt, scourge marks over her heart. She touched the wound and came away with blood, licking it off her fingers and letting it feel the wound in.
She felt a tingling in her gums and felt the composition of her teeth change. She reached up and felt the tips of the fangs as a bit of lightening shot across the room towards the Count again. She moved in front of him quickly and was hit again, but Nia didn’t seem to care that she was injuring her friend. Persephone would not be able to control herself any longer.
She picked up the nearest chair and hurled it at Nia, using it to distract the witch for a moment to tackle her to the ground, pinning her hands and legs. Pain in Persephone’s back helped her realize she had been flown across the room again. She stood and threw another chair at Nia, hitting her in the jaw and sending her over a desk.
Persephone stood at the far side of the room, blood running down her chest. She moved to see if Nia was okay, not wanting to hurt her, and gasped as a streak of red flew at her and sent her flying through the window of the forty story building. She heard yelling inside the building before she started to really fall.
Closing her eyes, she readied herself to splat on the concrete below. She would have much rather died at the hands of someone she cared for than those she fought on a daily basis. She could feel her speed picking up and knew that it wouldn’t be long.
She jumped slightly as she felt arms around her, wrapping her arms around Bob’s neck almost as soon as he started to pull up. She could smell the blood under the surface of his skin and knew that something wasn’t right with her.
When they landed back on the fortieth floor, she jumped from his arms and moved across the room to finish what Nia had started. What she found was Nia unconscious on the floor behind her desk, where Persephone had knocked her out.
“What the fuck was that all about, Persephone?”
Bob had anger in his voice as she knelt in front of Nia, throwing her unconscious onto a shoulder in a fireman’s throw. Carrying Nia’s unconscious body into her office and dropping her onto the couch. “I said, what the fuck …?”
“I heard what you said, Bob. Now if you can just shut the fuck up so I can figure out what the fuck’s going on, I’ll give you a fucking answer!” Persephone felt the door behind her vibrate a second before it slammed and held her head in her hands. “Get out, Bob.”
“No. I want to know what the fuck the deal is. I won’t leave this room until you give me a straight answer.”
“How’s this for your FUCKING ANSWER?!?!?!” Persephone threw her hand out and the door opened behind him. He flew out the door, barely making it with his wings still expanded, and hit the far wall, just as the door slammed shut again.
Pain shot through her body and she crumbled to the floor, feeling her body change violently. She opened her eyes after a few minutes and could see the room in greater distinction than she had before. She looked down at her hands and could see through them. She stood slowly and walked to the mirror on the far side of the room and gasped at her reflection.
Her normally pale skin had lost all hue, veins popping out against the skin in great contrast. Her eyes, as she watched, went from completely green to their normal size and shape around her pupil, but the green seemed to darken with an inner demon. Her hair, normally a vibrant auburn, was turning to the color of freshly spilled blood before her very eyes. She was Nosferatu. She was vampire.
She shook her head and opened the curtains of the window, letting the noonday sun kiss her skin, sighing as it neglected to burn her skin. She was still Persephone Bryar, freak of nature. She didn’t know how much longer she would last like this, but she only needed to last through tomorrow night. She could easily take the cure as soon as she helped her people get the vampires and demons at Contract Valley better, right?
She heard a stirring behind her, almost painful in her ears with their new abilities, and walked over to the couch to see Nia waking up. She wanted to slap the shit out of the bitch for what she had made happen to her, but the fear on Nia Prince’s face at her appearance was payment enough.
The scream that come from Nia’s mouth chattered the glasses on the bar behind Persephone and made her cower on the ground, covering her ears. “DAMNIT, NIA! SHUT UP!”
The office door came smashing down and Bob, Frank, the Count, and security burst into the room. “Someone, please, for the love of all that is holy, shut her up!”
There was a brief moment where everyone in the doorway stared in shock at the thing that had once been Persephone laying on the floor, ears covered. Bob was the first to act, covering Nia’s mouth with his hand. “Shut up! You’re killing her! Obviously, she’s not changed completely if you’re sitting here still breathing, right?”
Nia’s high pitched scream slowed to a halt as Persephone fell to her side, blood pouring freely from her ears. She flinched as Nia moved from the couch to the floor, pulling her head into her lap. “Oh, P, I’m so sorry.”
Though Persephone couldn’t hear her, she could read her lips and knew that Nia was apologizing over and over, rocking Persephone in her lap as she did so. Some of the blood from her ears made it into her mouth and there was a pop as sound returned. She found that they had realized she could hear, so she thought she would just keep silent and make them continuing to think that.
“This is entirely your fucking fault! If you hadn’t brought her back here, we would have just been fine finding another CEO. You just had to let her live, didn’t you?”
“I’m her husband, asshole! Of course I had to let her live. And this, Count, is entirely your fucking fault. If you hadn’t grabbed her like everyone in the office told me you did, we wouldn’t be having the problems we’re having right now. She wouldn’t have had to save your ass and risk her own. If I were you, I would let these nice guards escort you out of the building before I fucking kill you myself.”
Persephone could hear the strain in Bob’s voice just before another voice filled the room. “Fuck! What happened?” She flinched as her brother knelt in front of her, running his fingers through her hair. “Bob, why does she look like this? Oh my God, oh my God …”
Nia moved as Mikey pulled Persephone into his lap. She wrapped her arms around his waist and laid her head on his chest. She could hear the blood flowing through his veins, the steady beating of his heart. She could smell the fear on him that he had lost his little sister as he had lost his brother. She squeezed him tighter and kissed his chin, still trying to appear deaf.
“There was an incident, Mikey, where Count Asshole here provoked Nia. Persy saved his life and was in the process hit by the fire. Apparently, Nia has never used her powers before and her anger was forcing her to attack anyone who opposed her.” Bob glanced at Nia who was looking with concern at Persephone, tears streaming down her face. “Anyway, Persy seemed to have gotten some bad side effects of the fight. As far as we can tell from her general behaviors, she’s fine save her appearance. Though Nia also has supersonic screams and we think Persephone might be deaf.”
“Shit …” Mikey wrapped his arms tighter around his sister. He started to rock her, singing a song he used to sing to her when she couldn’t sleep.
She sighed and kissed her brother on the chin again, pulling back and standing slowly. The world span for a moment, but Mikey’s arm around her waist kept her standing. She turned to Bob and the Count, walking over, with Mikey’s help, and punched the Count enough to break his nose. “Get the fuck off my property.”
The Count turned back to her, anger on his blood drenched face. “Your property? Who says you own it?”
“The deed says I own it. I bought out all your shares as well as all the other shares a week ago. I’ve been waiting for the best time to show you just what I thought of you before kicking you out. Now get the fuck out before I throw you out.”
“You wouldn’t dare!”
“Security? Would you be ever so kind to show the Count out of the building? And ask Lily to draw up a restraining order for me against him. Something along the lines he can’t get near me or this building.” The head security guy smiled widely and nodded, obviously pleased to get rid of Count Delano.
As soon as the Count was out of sight, complaining all the while about his rights and such, Persephone felt her legs give way. She felt Mikey’s arms tighten and he scooped her up into his arms, sitting her on the couch. “Persy, are you alright?”
“Get Rick up here. Ask him if the cure will take away all my abilities or merely just the vampire. If he says yes, don’t let him touch me with a needle.” She grabbed Mikey as he went to ask and pulled him to her. “I’m serious, Michael James Way. Swear to me that you won’t let him administer the cure unless I say so. Swear upon all the love you’ve ever had for me.”
Mikey faltered for a minute at hearing his full name. He bit his lip and nodded. “I swear upon all the love I have for you, Persephone Jaclyn Way Bryar.” He let out the breath he had been holding, knowing that in their family, full names meant an oath to the death. He kissed her hand and disappeared down the hall with Frank and Nia to find Rick.
“And you, Robert Cory Bryar, must swear it to me as well.” Persephone could see the black taking over the edge of her vision, but needed to have his word first.
“I swear, honey.” He sat on the edge of the couch, kissing her gently. “Why don’t you want the cure until tomorrow night?”
“Without my abilities, I’m nothing against the vampires.” She smiled as he kissed her again and shook her head. “If you don’t stop, people might actually think you still love me, Bobby.”
“Let them think what they want, Persy.” Persephone smiled against his lips before the blackness finally overtook her, passing out before she could say anymore.
