Chloe awoke the next morning to the sound of screaming and crashes coming from the direction of the living room. In her half-asleep daze, it took her a minute to figure out who the two voices were. With the realization, she reached her hand out and found the other side of the bed empty.
She frowned and opened her eyes, looking around the room. She pulled the sheets over her naked body and frowned deeper. The frown was however replaced by a smile as she remembered falling asleep in Spencer’s arm only to wake him at 3 am for a morning quickie. But what was the screaming about?
Climbing out of the bed, Chloe grabbed one of Spencer’s shirts off the floor and pulled it over her head, glad it came down to her knees, and opened the door. “What the hell is all the screaming about?”
She spoke before she actually saw what was in front of her. When the scene in front of her finally registered, she threw her hand up, sending Alex skidding into a wall, as she ran to Spencer’s bleeding form. “Alex, what the fuck did you do? Spencer, baby, talk to me.”
She lifted Spencer’s head into her lap and glared at Alex as he started to talk. “Chloe! Thank the gods you’re alive! That bastard wouldn’t let me see you, and there was blood all over your bed, and the couch was knocked over. I thought he had hurt you!”
He staggered to get away from the wall and closer to her, but she had held up her hand to stop him. “The blood is his. As for the couch, I kicked his ass in a fight and he went over it.”
“You’re not wearing any underwear.” Chloe jumped as Spencer spoke from her knee. She slapped him and he groaned. “Ow. Kind of bleeding here. I think I might have a concussion too. Your cousin sure hits hard.”
“I don’t think so. He’s kind of pussy.” Chloe looked up at Alex with anger in her eyes as she helped Spencer sit up. “I’ve always been able to kick his ass in a fair fight.”
She bit her wrist and let a few drops of the blood drip onto the wound on the back of Spencer’s head. He flinched, but then sighed as the wound healed miraculously. “Thanks, Chloe.”
“How did you learn to do that, Chlo?” Alex’s voice pulled Chloe and Spencer’s eyes to him, having been too engrossed in the secret smile they had been sharing to remember that he was in the room.
Frowning, Chloe glanced at Spencer, who merely shrugged, before turning back to Alex with her own shrug. “I dreamt that I could do it last night.”
“You dreamt it?”
“Yes. It was weird. I saw my mother in my dreams. She was wearing a white dress that flowed around her, making her look ethereal. She pulled a blade from the folds of the dress and slit her wrist and whispered one word. ‘Heal.’ I woke up and knew that I could heal with my blood if the person I healed wasn’t human.”
Alex frowned and the little lines he got between his eyes stood out dramatically. It was never a good sign. “So you’re telling me that after nearly twenty years of life, you’re just now getting to where you understand your abilities?”
Chloe shrugged, but nodded. “Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying.”
“Why? What have you done in the last few days that would make it so easy for you to understand yourself now?”
Chloe opened her mouth to say that she didn’t know what she had done, but stopped, blushing slightly as she caught Spencer’s eye. He had that knowing look on his face, the one guys get when they know why their girlfriend is blushing so bright. She looked away from him and ended up looking at Alex, which didn’t help hide the blush much. “What did you do, Chlo?”
“Nothing important, Alex.”
“Chloe Bianca Bryar, if you don’t tell me what you did, I will get Mama up here to make you tell me what you did.”
“That’s an empty threat, Franklin Alexander Iero, and you know it.” Chloe spat his name out like it was something nasty before sighing and shaking her head, feeling Spencer’s arms go around her. She leaned into him and shook her head. “I’m no longer a virgin, ok?”
Alex’s jaw dropped open before anger welled into his eyes. He took a step forward, eyes on Spencer, before stopping himself and shaking his head. “I’m not going to say anything, Chlo. You’re nearly twenty years old. It’s your decision, but let me ask you this. Why him?” He gestured angrily toward Spencer, but wouldn’t look at him.
Chloe looked at Spencer instead, turning her body a little to look into his face. She returned the smile that he gave her, seeing the love in his eyes, and turned back to Alex, knowing that her eyes held a similar emotion. She pulled Spencer’s arms around herself and voiced the thing she had wanted to say for a few days. “I love him.”
She felt Spencer stiffen against her, his arms going tight. She turned in his arms and smiled at him, letting him see how she felt about him before kissing him. She felt him relax as he returned the kiss. They separated and he whispered against her lips, though both knew that Alex would hear anything he said. “I love you too, Chloe.”
Alex coughed and Chloe turned to him, smile on her face. “What?”
“Sorry. I thought he was just trying to get into your pants. I see now that that’s not it at all. But I should tell you that one of the reasons I came up here looking for you is that Bill was worried about you and needs you to do some executive decisions downstairs. He sent me to see how long it would take you to get up and ready.”
“Tell him to give me thirty minutes and I’ll be down.”
Alex nodded and went to the elevator, stopping in front of Chloe where she still sat in Spencer’s arms. He leaned over and kissed her gently on the forehead. He patted Spencer’s shoulder and then climbed into the elevator, shaking his head with a huge smile on his face. “At least he’s a hottie, Chlo.” He laughed at the look on Spencer’s face as the elevator closed.
Chloe shook her head at her cousin’s disappearance and his parting remark and stood, pulling Spencer to his feet with her. She headed into her bathroom, with him close behind, and stripped out of the shirt she was wearing before turning the water on. She smiled as the warm water ran down her body when she stepped into the shower, needing to get the blood and other body fluids off her.
She felt hands on her back and leaned into Spencer’s naked body, smiling softly to herself. “We don’t have time to do anything fun, Spence. We have to get cleaned and downstairs in 30 minutes.”
“I know. I just thought you might need help cleaning off you back. I know I do.” He turned around and she moved to look at his blood soaked back. “Do you mind helping your boyfriend out a little?”
Chloe smiled wide at the boyfriend comment and nodded, grabbing a rag and frowning as she realized that the blood had dried on his back to a thick sticky goop. She saw her own fingernail marks under the blood from the night before, but they were already healed. The wall indentations, however, were still bleeding a little. She bit her wrist and put a little blood on his back, watching as the cuts miraculously healed. She didn’t think she’d ever get used to that.

Thirty minutes, one healed body, and two clean bodies later, Chloe and Spencer stepped out of the elevator and into the rather crowded office below. It took Chloe a moment to adjust to the amount of people in the office, but when she did, the first person she noticed, the one closest to her, had a mass of curly hair reminiscent of an afro.
The man turned to face Chloe and she couldn’t help the girlish squeal that emitted from her throat as she jumped and threw her arms around his neck, kissing him gently on the cheek and crying softly. “Uncle Ray, they told us you were dead.”
Ray Toro wrapped his arms around his young ‘niece’ and kissed her on the neck as he held her, shaking his head. “I was dead, but somehow one of the paramedics revived me just before it would have been too late. I lost my memory for a while, but a few days ago I saw your mother in my dreams and she sent me back to you.”
He lowered Chloe to the floor but didn’t stop hugging her. Someone coughed and spoke in an injured voice. “So he’s the only one you’re giving love to today, Penguin?”
Chloe pulled back at the voice and smiled wide before throwing herself into Ryan Ross’s arms, hugging him tight. “Ryan, I thought you were dead. I didn’t hear anything about you surviving the carnage of Contract Valley.”
Ryan clung to Chloe and he shook his head, unwilling to talk. She could feel him shutter and knew that he was crying. She held her best friend tight to her and felt arms wrap around them both, breathing in the heavy scent of Brendon Urie. Another set of arms wrapped behind her and she could smell Alex. With her cousin and her two best friends holding her so tight, she felt the tears begin to flow and couldn’t help crying in their arms.
She was the first to pull away and wipe the tears from her eyes, shaking her head. She kissed Ryan gently on the lips before giving Brendon the same kiss. “I’m so glad you two are alive. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”
Another cough came from behind her and she smiled, knowing the voice that went with it. She turned and held her hand out to Spencer, stepping into his arms and letting his smell fill her nostrils, instantly calming her. “Ryan, Brendon, this is my boyfriend Spencer Smith.”
She felt their eyes on her and frowned. “What?”
“Boyfriend, Chloe? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you look so calm, so peaceful.” Brendon held a look of knowing on his face. She had known him almost as long as she had known Alex. If anyone would know about her moods and happiness, it would be him.
“OK, fine. He’s the love of my life, my soul mate, my better half. Happy?”
Brendon smiled wide and nodded. “As a clam.”
“Good for you, Penguin. You needed someone to make your happy.” Ryan held his hand out to Spencer who took it and they shook. “It’s a pleasure, Spencer. I’m sure you’ll be good to our little Chloe.”
Something changed in that moment. If she hadn’t been magically inclined she would have never noticed, but there was a power coming off Ryan that had never been there before. Chloe moved out of instinct just as Spencer’s eyes bled to red and the small horns came from his forehead. “Back off, vampire, or you’ll know just how easily I can take care of you.”
Ryan’s eyes bled to complete brown and he smiled, flashing elongated fangs. Chloe couldn’t believe her eyes. She had only seen him a week ago and he had been human. Had he been turned when they took over Contract Valley? “A demon, eh? I guess we’ll have to see just what you can handle.”
“Don’t, Ryan.” Brendon’s hand went to Ryan’s shoulder and his eyes turned into a spiral of green and brown. Another flavor of power began to pour off him and Chloe was at a loss as to what to do, but Spencer was sure of what to do.
Power like fire shot through the room, hitting Ryan in the hand where it still held Spencer’s and he went down onto his knees, pain shooting across his face. Chloe grabbed Spencer’s arm and he turned fiery red eyes to her. She’d seen it and shook her head, sorrow on her face. “Please, let Spencer come back to me.”
She leaned into the demon and kissed him gently on the lips, feeling him hesitate before the kissed was returned gently. She felt him let go of Ryan before he collapsed. She caught him gently in her arms and lowered him to the ground, cradling him in her lap. “Shh, it’s alright, Spencer.”
He buried his head into her lap and kept repeating, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” over and over, not looking at the others in the room. She stroked his hair and turned to look at Ryan who was staring at the once demon Spencer as he cradled his own hand. “What’s wrong with him, Chlo?”
“His demon self and his human self are not the same. It’s almost like having a separate personality. Violence brings out the demon, love brings the human back. He didn’t mean to, Ryan, but you shouldn’t have used vampire magic on him. Especially weak vampire magic. You have nothing to back up the threat with.”
“I have something.” The voice was whiny as he looked at Chloe. “Ivanslav said that I was one of the strongest he’d ever turned. He said that I picked up the abilities like a pro.”
“But for a demon who’s had his powers all his life and knows how to use them, you’re an easy meal, Ryan.” She turned to Brendon. “What about you? I know from his power and he’s confession that he was turned by a vampire, but there is power to you now as well. What has happened to you?”
Brendon had the grace to blush, turning his head away as he made his own little confession. “I’ve always had this power in me, Chloe, I just hid it extremely well because I didn’t want to be a freak. Alex knew because, um, well …”
“You and Alex are an item, I know that, Brendon.”
“We all do, Brendon, darling.” Nia Iero smiled at her son’s boyfriend from by the office door. Chloe had not even noticed that she had been there, but she returned her aunt’s smile. “And we love you all the more for that.”
Brendon blushed an even brighter red as he looked at Alex who shrugged and wrapped his arms around Brendon’s shoulder. “OK, so we’re an item and you guys don’t care, but if I had told you that my mother was a different, an other, would you still have not cared?”
“My mother was a vampire and my father was a fallen angel, Brendon, I could give a fuck what your mother was.” Chloe smiled pleasantly as she said it. She continued to stroke Spencer’s hair lovingly, but spoke only to Brendon. “Faerie, right? I can taste your power on the air like something sweet and wild. It has its own smell, like a forest after a heavy storm.”
“Caramel.” Spencer’s voice spoke up from Chloe’s lap and everyone looked at him with a quizzical looks on their faces. “You taste and smell like caramel to me, sweet and sticky almost like …”
“Like blood.” Chloe finished the thought for him and looked up at Brendon with a wicked smile on her face. “You smell like food to us, Brendon, which is a good reason for you to keep your powers in check. And, Ryan …” She turned to her other friend as she helped Spencer sit up. “You’re an easy meal for me. Your power calls to me and begs me to claim you as my own. Keep your abilities hidden, or be bound to me as servant for eternity.”
Ryan’s face went white and he looked at Chloe for a moment. “Are you serious? My power calls to you?”
“Yes, and it tastes delicious.” She felt her eyes bleed to a solid green and she smiled, crawling toward him while he scuttled away. “Put it away before I lose my own control.”
“Wait, Chloe.” Spencer grabbed her wrist and pulled her roughly back to him, eliciting a growl from Chloe’s lips, though that was quickly silenced by his touch. “Before you eat him, let’s inquiry as to how he came willingly to Bryar Enterprises. Most vampires avoid this place like the plague.”
Ryan stared fearfully at Chloe as Spencer held her, swallowing his power back into himself. “I didn’t take what he had offered. I refused it.”
“What does that mean?” Spencer’s voice came through the vision of bloodlust Chloe was suffering through and she could feel his confusion.
“He is not a full vampire yet, Spencer. His one true master is out there. Someone who will offer him blood and he will be unable to refuse the gift.” Chloe answered through the haze, pulling from Spencer’s grasp and crawling toward Ryan again. She could feel his eyes on her, but they were no longer full of fear. “When his one true master offers him blood, he will take it and become full vampire, his master’s servant for eternity. If the master is kindly, he will be. If the master is cruel, it will be his nature as well.”
Chloe backed him into a corner and then stopped, a foot in front of him. She pulled a blade she had had hidden in her boot and slit her wrist in a violent motion. She held the bleeding wrist out to him, splashing blood onto the floor. “Drink and become whole.”
Ryan’s eyes became drowning pools of brown as he dropped to his knees in front of Chloe. He was no longer looking at her as an intelligent human, but a ravenous animal. Ryan grabbed her wrist just as Brendon moved to pull him away from Chloe, but the blood splattered and went into his mouth anyway. With that new burst of bloodlust shooting through him, he threw Brendon off and locked his mouth around the wound on Chloe’s wrist, refusing to let go.
After a few second, Chloe could feel the bond they had made and knew that he had taken enough, but he wasn’t letting go. She pulled, but to no avail. Beginning to feel dizzy, she gestured with her free hand to Spencer. “Spencer, get him off me.” It was the last thing she said as the room went black.
