Chapter 7
*Jade’s POV*
I was glad Gerard liked my new dress, but I was a little embarrassed to be wearing so little clothing. Girls who dressed like this at home were sent to harems. I hope Gerard won’t send me to one. Maybe it’s a test. Maybe if I let other men see me like this, I’ll be sent to a harem! This disturbed me so that I turned to Gerard.
“Do you have a harem?” I asked. Gerard looked at me, confused.
“No…why do you ask?” he smiled.
“This isn’t a test?” I was feeling foolish now.
“No, this isn’t a test. What are you talking about? Where did harems come from?”
“Well, I…um…I’m not used to dressing like this.” I admitted. “In my society, girls who dress like this are sent to harems. You won’t send me to a harem?” I was blushing and trying to collect myself.
“Of course not! We don’t believe in harems, or anything of the sort. And besides, I’d be too jealous.” Gerard joked.
“What do you mean?” I looked up at him, with an embarrassed smile.
“I’d kill any man who touched you.” Gerard squeezed me closer to him.
“Why?” I wrinkled my eyebrows. Gerard smiled and kissed my forehead.
“We’ll talk about it later, ok? Are you hungry?” he asked. I shook my head. “You really do look beautiful.” He tilted my chin up with his finger and kissed me sweetly. From a distance I could hear cheerful music and laughter. Gerard smelled of leather and sweat. As he broke the kiss, I smiled and grabbed his hand.
“Where is that music coming from?” I asked, looking up at Gerard.
“Oh, that’s the carnival. There are rides, games, and food. We have a few every year. Would you like to go?”
“I’d love to!” I cried. Gerard smiled and we walked to a large earthen cave where the carnival was being held. The rides sparkled with bright colors, and the games called out to the passersby with strange sounds. The aromas of foods I could never dream of hit my nose all at once.
“What do you want to do first?” Gerard asked. I looked around, trying to take everything in at once.
“It’s amazing. It all looks like so much fun! What do you advise?”
“Hmm…do you like excitement? New things?” Gerard prompted.
“Yes! I’ll try anything.”
“Why don’t we try…this one? We can watch first and you can decide if you really want to ride it.”
“That’s fine with me.” We strode over to a ride with a horizontal row of seats that went up and down in a circle. The passengers seemed to really enjoy it. It looked like great fun. “Oh can we ride it please?” I begged Gerard, who smiled at me.
“Yes we can ride it.” He laughed, placing a kiss on my forehead. We took our seats on the ride and Gerard grabbed my hand when it started to move. It spun round and round, creating a rushing sensation in my stomach that made me laugh. Gerard laughed with me throughout the ride, and when it was over we walked off hand in hand.
“That was great! Is every ride like that?”
“All the rides are different. Would you like to ride something else?”
“I’d love to!” Gerard laughed and pulled me close.
“You pick this time.” He prompted. I looked at all the different rides, unable to choose. My eyes rested on a large wheel with hanging seats.
“How about that one?” I pointed to the wheel.
“Perfect.” Gerard led to the wheel and we stood in line, his arms around me. When we got on the ride, Gerard and I sat in a hanging seat together. The ride started and the seat went higher and higher.
“How high does this go?” I asked, looking around at the scene unfolding below us.
“I don’t know.” Gerard opened his arms, offering to hold me close. I scooted in and we settled together, his arm around me and my head on his shoulder.
“So what do you think? Is this somewhere you would want to live?” Gerard asked softly.
“I love it here. There’s no pressure to marry a stranger and have babies.”
“I know the feeling. My father was going to marry me off to some girl in another coven.” Gerard laughed. I turned to catch his eyes.
“I’m glad I met you, Gerard.” I rushed in to kiss him full on the lips, no longer the shy human girl. I longed to be a vampire. I longed to be Gerard’s mate. Gerard’s hand found my hair, his fingers weaving through it as we kissed. His other arm wound around my waist, pulling me closer and closer to his body. The ride jerked to a halt and we sprang apart, embarrassed and afraid we’d been caught. Our seat was at the very top of the ride. I looked over the side, wondering what I’d see. The rides and the people below were so small! The carnival had a beautiful colored haze all around it, and the sounds and smells were fleeting. The shadowy colors danced along the roof of the cave.
“Oh it’s so beautiful.” I said.
“What do you want to do next?” Gerard asked from behind me, looking down at the carnival. He wrapped his arms around my waist and nuzzled into my neck.
“Do you want to get something to eat? I’m really hungry.” I said with a laugh. Gerard kissed my neck, surprising me. He nodded and settled his head in the crook of my neck.
When he reached the end of the ride, Gerard took me to a food booth and we got these things called corndogs. Gerard explained that they were meat dipped in bread batter and fried. He had to show me how to eat it and I made a spectacle of myself, but it was okay because Gerard was with me. Next to the biscuits and gravy, it was the tastiest thing I’d ever eaten. After the corndog, Gerard brought me a bag of spun sugar called cotton candy. It was delicious, and it just melted in your mouth. Gerard took a big bite of the cotton candy and kissed me. I could taste the sugar on his lips. We shared a piece of cotton candy and kissed again.
“I’ve had so much fun! Now what can we do?” I asked after we finished the cotton candy.
“We still haven’t played a game.” Gerard suggested. We ended up at another booth, playing a game where you had to shoot balloons with darts to win a prize. I was terrible, but Gerard shot a balloon every time! He won a prize and picked a large red bear holding a heart that read ‘Only You’. He gave me the bear as we walked away. We passed a woman selling carnations as we left the carnival. Gerard bought a blue flower to match my dress and placed it in my hair. He kissed me lightly when I smiled.
“I have something I want to show you.” He said, grabbing my hand. He led me through tunnel after tunnel, until the carnival sounds disappeared. I could feel a cool breeze and smell fresh air. Gerard led me out onto a terrace looking down on the forest, green and lush with life in the moonlight. “Look up.” Gerard whispered in my ear. I obeyed and gasped at the sight. The stars had never seemed so bright! It was so beautiful I never wanted to leave.
“Gerard, this is amazing!”
“This is where I come when I need to think.”
“Is it like this every night?” I asked, looking at him.
“Almost. It’s even better on full moons.” We sat on the edge of the terrace together, his arm around me as I leaned against him. “The first time I ever saw you I came here and just sat for hours thinking about you. You were so beautiful I felt like the world had stopped moving. I wanted you for my own. For a while it looked like I could have you. But then your engagement was announced. I came up here and thought; I didn’t know what to do. I almost brought you here when I saw you crying in the woods, but then again it was daytime and I would have died if I’d left the tree I was hiding in.” Gerard said with a wry smile.
“I saw you. I felt sorry that you were trapped. I wondered about you that night; if you’d made it.” I looked up at him. He looked very sad, regretful.
“I came up with a plan to keep myself from having to see you with…that human, to see you belong to someone else. I decided that I would feed from you and kill you in the process.” Gerard hid his eyes behind his hand.
“Gerard…” I reached for him.
“Please, let me finish.” He took a deep breath and brought his hand down, looking in my eyes. “The night you were outside finishing chores…I’d been watching you for three days. I never expected to discover that you wore the Queen Star. It saved your life.
“When you saved my life, I started to think maybe I didn’t have to kill you. Maybe you would want to stay with me if I gave the choice, if I gave you freedom. And here you are. With me. You’ve been here for a week, Jade. And I’m afraid I must ask you to make a decision.” He looked at me with sad, pleading eyes.
“I never thought the choice would be so simple, but…I want to stay with you. I want to be with you forever.”
The sadness in his eyes disappeared immediately as he wrapped his arms around me, giving my neck a gentle kiss.
“I’m all yours.” He whispered gently. I smiled and returned his affection.
“Before you turn me, I must ask a favor. I must return to retrieve some things I can’t bear to leave behind.”
“You must return?” Gerard asked.
“Only for a day. I must say my goodbyes.”
“Then you shall return tomorrow. I don’t know what I’ll do when you’re gone.” Gerard laughed.
“I’ll only be gone a day!”
“And to me it will be an eternity when I can’t see you.” I smiled at the thought of him waiting restlessly for my return. I nuzzled his neck and rested my head on his shoulder. He squeezed me close and laid his head on mine.
“I’ll miss you too.” I said softly. Gerard answered with a kiss to my forehead.
