Brian pouted for a full ten minutes after they got in the car but fell asleep again quickly and deeply and Johnny soon followed him. Zack sat in the middle snuggled next to Jimmy and watched Matt closely. Jimmy was starting to drift off as rain lightly pattered on the roof and windshield, Matt also had the radio on some kind of soft rock station playing low, and the car was warm and comfortable. Zack leaned forward and switched the heat off; Matt glanced at him, “Too warm?” Zack rested his cheek on Matt’s shoulder.
“No, but it makes it harder on you” he whispered; Matt smiled and cradled Zack’s head against his shoulder, “Don’t worry about me.” He also whispered.
“I’m gonna take a nap, will you be okay?” Zack asked yawning; Matt pressed a small kiss to his temple and let him go. Zack pulled back into his seat and snuggled against Jimmy and was asleep within minutes.
Zack woke up with a start, which also woke up the Rev, whom he was leaning against, and Johnny who was leaning against him.
“What’s wrong?” Jimmy’s voice was a little slurred with sleep but he was looking around the car carefully. Zack shook his head, “Its nothin’, just a bad dream.” Zack rubbed his eyes and rolled his shoulders trying to work out some of the tension that had built there.
“Where’d Syn and Matt go?” Johnny looked out his window and the back window searching for their missing friends.
“They’re over by the trees.” Jimmy answered looking out his own window.
“Jimmy,” Zack scooted closer to the drummer, still jumpy from his dream, “I need some air.” Jimmy nodded and opened the door and Zack clumsily climbed over him and landed in grass almost up to his knees. The rain that had been following them all day had turned into a fairly thick mist Zack could barely see Matt, who was only twenty yards away partially concealed in a thick stand of trees and bushes; Brian was closer lounging against another tree closer to the road, but he was still only a shadowy outline.
“What’s wrong?” Matt’s low voice carried eerily through the mist, Zack shivered from the cold and the strange disembodying effect the fog had on Matt’s voice. Zack walked toward the pair, when he got close enough Brian pulled him against his warm chest, “You okay?” his soft voice couldn’t have carried any more than a few inches, the fog was thicker near the trees.
“Bad dream.” Zack mumbled; Matt materialized next to him and nearly scared him into a coma.
“Sorry.” Matt whispered and placed a small kiss on his temple; Zack could feel his heart hammering in his chest, it must’ve sounded like one of Jimmy’s double bass lines to Matt.
“Are we in any hurry to get to the airport?” Zack asked after a moment; Matt shook his head.
“I’m gonna walk around for a few minutes.” Zack broke out of Brian’s loose embrace and headed into the fog.
Zack had no idea he was claustrophobic until he was walking through that suffocating mist, he couldn’t have gone more than a couple yards before Matt, Syn, and the car were swallowed by the murk. He walked a little further when the dreadfully familiar feeling of panic sprang upon him with swiftness and ferocity of a wild animal. He froze, unsure of what had triggered his alarm; he turned a circle trying to see into the gloom but still found nothing.
Denial: It’s nothing, you’re just scaring yourself, now quit being a baby and just head back to the car.
Reality: Where’s the car…
Zack turned another circle, he couldn’t tell which way he’d come from, “Matt,” he cringed as his voice came out as little more than a shaky, whisper, “Matt, I think I’m lost.” His voice was a little louder but not loud enough, not even Matt’s keen ears would be able to hear his terrified whisper. The feeling of panic was growing, he still didn’t know where it was coming from but he wasn’t going to stand around and wait for it to find him; he took off running it a random direction and hoped he wouldn’t run headlong into a tree.
He ran for what seemed like an eternity, what was only a few minutes, with the terrifying feeling of something chasing him and slowly gaining. All at once the feeling disappeared, Zack didn’t stop running until his side was cramping and he couldn’t breathe. He stopped panting and gasping with his hands on his knees, hoping whatever it was had decided he wasn’t worth the effort. The mist shifted with the wind and a shadow hurled out of it and slammed into Zack’s side completely winding him again. He fell hard and tried to catch his breath; something latched onto his foot and like yesterday began to pull him. Breathless as he was Zack opened his mouth and let loose an ear-piercing shriek.
The spiky grass gave way to gravel and then merged into the rough concrete of the road and there he stopped; the force let go of his foot and Zack scrambled to his feet and started running back the way he’d come. Something that felt like a pro-wrestler shot out of a cannon slammed into his chest and sent him flying at least three feet before he landed back on the road with a loud ‘crack’ when his head hit the concrete. He laid there dazed and totally disoriented and not real sure of what was happening or why he was on the cold ground.
“Matt?” his voice sounded weird, like he was yelling in a tunnel, he could hear the faint echo in his head. He sat up slowly and then stood and promptly fell over again, he was getting tired and there was one hell of a migraine working its way through his skull.
“Zack!” Matt’s usually loud voice was muffled by the mist; Zack turned his head painfully toward the sound.
“Matt?” Zack tried to sit up again but felt the heaviness of his limbs holding him down, he was so tired, if he could take just a five minute nap he would feel better. Zack started to close his eyes when a bright flash made his headache flare up. He focused on the brightness coming closer and in a small moment of clarity realized there was a massive truck bearing down on him with no sign of stopping. Zack closed his eyes and hoped he would pass out before the truck’s massive tires crushed him, or that they would hit his head first and just kill him instantly.
Suddenly Zack’s world spun in three different directions, he was being lifted and moved at an amazing rate of speed, and then the truck blew past him, so close he could hear the ‘whoosh’ of the tires on the damp road. There was a painfully loud screech from the breaks and a stream of low oaths from the person carrying him and his world spun again as he was moved rapidly out of the way of the jackknifing semi.
Finally everything fell silent and Zack was gently placed on the prickly grass, he was tired and closed his eyes again to take his nap.
“Zack you need to stay awake, you’re losin’ a lot of blood.” The soft murmur in his ear roused Zack for only a second before he finally slipped into unconsciousness.
Zack was forced out of his peaceful sleep by a brutal throbbing from the back of his head. He groaned and tried to move away from the pain, but it followed and increased with every movement. He thrashed for a second before two strong arms wrapped around him and pressed him against a warm chest so he couldn’t move.
“Matt?!” Jimmy’s voice echoed through his chest and Zack cringed at the loud sound, he whimpered and tried to push away from the drummer.
“I know,” Matt’s voice ripped through his head, “it’s because I couldn’t dilute the blood with anything. He’s gonna be in pain until his body adjusts to it!”
“When’s that gonna happen?!” Jimmy held him closer as he tried again to push away; the loud sounds were tearing his head apart.
“Fuck, lemme see ‘em.”
Zack felt himself being lifted and gently cradled in someone’s arms; he buried his head in the shoulder and whimpered as the pain continued to get worse.
“Zack, Zacky open your eyes Zacky. It won’t hurt, c’mon Zacky look at me, I’m gonna take the pain away and you can go back to sleep ‘kay?” Matt whispered in his ear; Zack painfully opened his eyes and met Matt’s calm dark brown ones. They only stayed brown for a second, then the colors began to change; Zack felt himself slipping away from the pain and getting lost in the montage of colors. Matt’s voice whispered through his mind pushing the pain away and making Zack’s eyelids heavy, he struggled for a moment to stay awake and watch the colors but gave into to sleep when Matt handed him back to Jimmy. Zack curled against the drummer’s warm body, pain free and fell back asleep.
“Will it hurt if we wake him up?”
“We have to, we’re here.”
“I’d rather carry him while he’s out cold instead of when he’s thrashing around in pain.”
“He’s fine Jimmy, I didn’t use that much, he’ll still have a little bit of a headache but nothing like
it was.”
Zack tuned out the voices and snuggled closer to Jimmy’s warm body and tried to fall back asleep.
“Look, he’s awake anyway, just get him the rest of the way up and he can sleep on the plane.”
Zack felt someone lightly tickle his side; he whined and swatted the hand away burying his head deeper into Jimmy’s shoulder.
“Syn be nice.”
Zack cracked an eye open and quickly closed it again as his headache flared up.
“C’mon Zacky, wake up, we’re at the airport.” Jimmy whispered; Zack shook his head, “Uh-uh, head hurts.” And tried again to go back to sleep.
“Zack get up.” Matt’s voice was followed by cold fingers running up his back; Zack yelped and sat up, dizzy and with one hell of a migraine, but still managed to glare at the singer.
“See now he’s up, let’s go before we miss our flight and get stuck here another two hours.” Matt got out of the car and the others followed.
They caught their flight just in time and made it home without any further incidents; once they landed in Orange County Zack felt all the tension leave his body, he could see the others felt the same. It was nine o’ clock at night in Orange, but to Zack it felt like it was a lot later and he couldn’t wait to get home and curl up in his warm bed.
“Home sweet fuckin’ home, we’re not leaving Orange County again until we go on tour.” Brian muttered grabbing his bag Zack nodded and snatched his own bag from the conveyor belt.
Jimmy, Syn, and Zack lived close to each other so they always carpooled whenever they had to go somewhere; the three climbed into Zack’s car while Matt and Johnny got into Matt’s; they made plans for the next day and said their goodbye’s.
Brian got dropped off first, he gave the other two a tired ‘see ya’ later’ and trudged up the stairs and into his house. When Zack pulled up to Jimmy’s house the drummer pulled him into a warm hug, “Do you want me to stay with you tonight?”
“Nah, I’m good, besides, you’re only three houses down, I’ll call if something doesn’t feel right.” Zack whispered returning the hug.
“Okay, but call me if you need me.” Jimmy said; Zack nodded and the drummer got out and went into his own house.
Zack pulled into his own driveway and sat a moment staring at his dark house, taking a deep breath he got out of the car and slowly walked up to the front door. There again he paused, he looked around the quiet neighborhood and shook his head he opened the door and walked in, ‘I really need to get a dog or something’. Zack looked around the quiet house and listened, the house was quiet. He went through and flipped on the lights in every room looking in every dark corner and even under the furniture; there was nothing there, he was the only occupant. He sighed, flipped off the lights and dragged himself to his bedroom. He flopped onto his bed and after a moment of arguing with himself he got up and walked over to his closet. He rummaged around for a few minutes and pulled out a tattered and much loved stuffed tiger that Zack had lovingly named Stripes when he was five years old. He changed for bed and flipped the hallway light on, put a flashlight on his nightstand, and fell into bed with Stripes cuddled against his chest like he used to do when he was little and afraid of the monsters under the bed.
Hooray! I'm off to start the next chapter 'Whoosh' *flies away*
