*FF to 3 years later…
Aurora is now 16, and Gerard is now 20, and somehow he is still with Lacey, as Lacey is somehow able to get away with all the cheating and manipulating without him knowing. While both at home and at school, there’s still a long Cold War between the two siblings. Gerard still pissed and angry with his beloved Aurora of accusing Lacey a cheater, without even realizing it, before long, he had missed a lot of her life.
Through the past years, she has had many achievements that both her parents, family and school pupils are really proud of her. She expressed all her potentials and talents, and all the teachers in school always called her the brilliant dark horse of the school. She has shown herself to be a perfect, mature and responsible student at school and a perfect sister at home, and Mikey knows it too, as she had been giving Mikey great advices whenever he needs help. A girl of high IQs, and intelligence, before she even knew it, she was asked by her teachers to take several higher tier tests and examinations, followed by a scholarship entrance exam into the prestigious university of Harvard. She, along with her few friends did went through several trial tests and finally went through the Harvard scholarship exam.
Aurora came home all excited and nervous, still thinking about the Harvard scholarship exam she did, hoping and crossing fingers that she did well in the test. Never had she thought of applying to Harvard, and never had she dreamt of being offered to go there. When she arrived home, she walked through the front door, nobody is in the living room, and she went into the kitchen to find her mom preparing the dinner. Her mom smiled at her once she entered.
“Hey…girl…How was school today?”
“Hey…mom…The usual but good. Where’s dad?”
“Still at work. Gerard and Mikey are upstairs in their own rooms with their girls.” Donna replied, smiling.
With the thought of Gerard and Mikey making out with their girlfriends in her head, it gave a chill down her spine. Aurora thought for a bit.
“What is it…honey?” Donna asked.
Aurora came out of thought, and looked at her mom with a complete straight face.
“Mom…me and my friends…we all took the test today.”
A quizzical look came onto Donna’s face.
“What test?”
“The scholarship entrance exam to Harvard, mom…that’s what we had been doing today…we’ve been offered by all our teachers and Mr. Brinkley to do the test to see if we are going to pass.”
Excitement lit up in Donna’s eyes.
“And…and…are you going to pass?”
“We don’t know yet. Hopefully with Distinction or Merit. We won’t know until we receive a letter from Harvard.”
“Are you excited or nervous?”
“Both.”
Donna smiled kindly at her intelligent daughter; she walked round the kitchen counter and hugged her.
“Trust me, girl. You will do perfectly fine, you are a clever girl. I’m sure you will pass with Distinction.” Donna stated, sort of shakily.
Aurora looked at her mom with concern.
“Mom…are you alright? You are a bit shaky.”
“I’m fine…dear. I’m okay.”
In truth, Donna doesn’t like to think about her daughter leaving home so quickly, she has a hunch that Aurora had succeeded in passing the test with the very top mark. She hates to think that Aurora will be leaving home, leaving New Jersey to pave her future career path. Within the years, she has watched Aurora grow up into a mature and beautiful girl. She had always anticipated for Aurora to go into a good university, and now…she is very likely to go into a university way before and earlier than her older brothers. She doesn’t want Aurora to leave home so early, but it’s Harvard, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, and she knows how excited Aurora is in going, plus…it concerns with her future.
“Mom…but please don’t tell everyone yet, especially not Gerard and Mikey…okay?”
“OK…I promise. Can I tell dad though?”
“Yes…mom…Please tell dad, I hope he’s pleased.”
“I’m sure he will be really pleased. We will have a Harvard graduate in the Way household.”
At around 6:30pm, Donna called for dinner time, they all got downstairs, Aurora saw that Lacey and Mikey’s girlfriend---Tatum are also staying.
“Great…” Aurora thought to herself sarcastically.
She was then however cheered up when she saw her dad---Donald constantly looking at her with a wide grin and winking at her. She knew it straightaway that her mom had told him.
While there’s still this long tension between Gerard and Aurora, Gerard would constantly glare at her, give her the evils and being a complete ass to her, ignoring and not listening to her. However, on the other hand, she’s not concerned at all, her dear parents had boost up her confidence that she had performed well in the Harvard scholarship exam.
For weeks past, Gerard is still complete asshole to Aurora, while Lacey is getting smugger and smugger as he is spoiling Lacey to bits. Gerard and Aurora don’t talk to each other now, they don’t even greet each other, and soon before he realizes it, he is going to regret of not listening to her anymore. One day, it has been 2 weeks since Aurora and her friends did the scholarship exam, when she arrived back home, as usual she walked into the kitchen to find her mom there.
“Hey…my girl…How was your day?”
“Hello…mom…I’m fine…as usual…pretty good.”
“Where’s dad, Gerard and Mikey?”
“Dad’s still at work. Gerard and Mikey are out with their girlfriends.”
Aurora noticed the unusual much softer tone in her mom’s voice.
“What’s wrong…mom?”
“I’m okay…dear…I’m just really pleased for you.”
Aurora furrowed her brows.
“Open it.” Donna said, pointing at a large, white thick envelope lying on the kitchen counter, upside down.
“Oh my god…” Aurora said breathily, she opened the letter, and found uni prospectus, a course booklet, and an official letter.
“I’m in…I’m in!”
“You are…you are!”
“I love you, my dear!” Donna said, hugging her daughter.
“I love you too!”
Donna then couldn’t help but cry, Aurora looked at her with concern.
“What is wrong, mom? Aren’t you happy for me?”
“I am fine…I am just so happy for you. But I just cannot believe you will be leaving home so soon, I will miss you a lot!”
“I’ve contacted my brother---you know…your uncle and aunt in Massachusetts?! They are really pleased for you, and they will be coming over to pick you and your friends up.” Donna added.
“Thanks…mom.”
“So are you still going to keep it from Gerard and Mikey?”
“I don’t know…I mean…Gerard is not even talking to me. Why would he listen?”
“You can definitely tell Mikey, since there’s no tension between the two of you. You need to tell them, especially Mikey, he will get really upset if he realizes that you left without saying anything, or without a good-bye.”
Donna knows about the years long Cold War between Gerard and Aurora, she also knows it in truth that Gerard still loves her even though he’s being an asshole to her all day long, and if Aurora leaves without saying anything, it will kill them both.
“OK…I will.”
Till later, Gerard and Mikey came back, along with Lacey and Tatum, Aurora still in her own room. A knock came on the door, and her mom came in.
“Gerard and Mikey are back. You should go and tell them now. Get it over and done with.”
Aurora nodded, left her room, carrying her Harvard uni letter with her. She went and knocked on Gerard’s door first, she heard scuffling. Gerard opened the door and frowned.
“What do you want?” Gerard asked gruffly.
“I need to talk to you…”
“What? More bitching about my girlfriend?”
“No…something else…” Aurora replied imploringly.
Before Aurora could finish her sentence, Gerard distracted her again.
“No…I told you that I don’t want to talk to you ever again. Just leave me alone!” Gerard stated meanly and slammed the door on her face.
She felt like crying but she just sighed. She went onto Mikey’s room, and knocked on his door, he opened it and he smiled.
“Hey…sis…”
“Hey…bro…Hey…Tatum.” Aurora greeted.
Tatum grinned and greeted back. Unlike Lacey, Tatum is completely the opposite, she’s so much nicer and friendlier and so much funnier.
“What’s up?” Mikey asked.
“I need to talk.”
“Well, I will leave you two alone at the moment then…” Tatum stated politely, getting up from his bed.
“No…no…it’s okay. You can stay, what I’m going to say is no big deal.”
Tatum sat back down and looking puzzled.
“What is it?” Mikey asked.
“Mikey…my dearest bro…I hope what I’m going to say is not going to make you upset, I hope you will be supportive.”
Mikey looked at her quizzically.
“I’m going away in a few weeks’ time.” Aurora replied seriously and straight-faced.
Tatum’s and Mikey’s eyes went wide. They couldn’t believe what they heard.
“Where…to…?” Tatum asked.
“Harvard, Massachusetts…I got an offer and I’m going.” Aurora replied firmly, and passed the thick envelop to them.
“How long will you be gone for?” Mikey asked, about to cry.
“For 4 to 5 years…I don’t know…But I will probably come back for the holidays.” Aurora replied.
With that, Mikey hugged her close and tight.
“Congratulation…I love you sis!” Mikey stated.
Both Tatum and Mikey congratulated her, Aurora smiled. Mikey wanted to both smile and cry, he’s happy for her but he’s upset at the same time, he doesn’t want her to leave. Aurora attending Harvard means she will be leaving home, leaving New Jersey indeed.
