Chapter Seven The Beach
“Can we go to the park?” Zacky asked; his green eyes wide and pleading.
Brian stopped with his cereal spoon half way to his mouth. His first instinct was to tell the four year old no; but then he looked at Zack. “I don’t know, Z.” Brian bit the inside of his lip at the sight of Zacky’s crestfallen face, and then the fiasco at the super market resurfaced in his mind. His eyes shifted from the four year old to his cereal bowl. He looked at the milk and floating bits of his breakfast as though it would give him the answer if he stared long enough.
Brian couldn’t tell the child no; poor Zacky had been cooped up inside just about every day. The little boy was either inside playing with Brian and/or Icky, or he was outside with Brian walking Icky.
Brian sighed as he tried to think if he even knew of any parks they could go to. He looked up at Zacky and noticed that there was hope written all over the boy’s face. The four year old even used his big green puppy eyes for good measure.
Brian smiled at the manipulation tactic; at least now he knew where the 26 year old Zacky had gotten it from. “How about we go to the beach?” he asked. Brian didn’t even have the time to wonder if Zacky would go for the beach instead of the park, when Zacky screamed, “YAY!
Both Ichabod and Brian jumped at the four year olds outburst.
Zacky hopped down off of his chair and started to chase Icky around the kitchen. Both dog and child were making loud, excited noises.
Brian put his left hand to his forehead, maybe the beach wasn’t such a great idea after all. He watched as Zack and Icky played tug-of-war with a sock that had definitely seen better days. He shook his head and smiled - both of them were just too cute together. He finished his breakfast and cleaned up the table, putting his and Zacky’s bowls in the dishwasher.
“Come on, let’s go get cleaned up,” Brian gently nudged Zacky toward the stairs. The little boy scrunched up his face, but allowed himself to be led up the stairs, none the less.
Brian half paid attention to Zacky as the boy brushed his teeth, while he dug through the drawers that held Zacky’s clothes, looking for swim-trunks. “Shit,” He swore under his breath as he realized that they had never bought Zacky a swimsuit. He grimaced and threw all of the four-year-old’s clothes back in to the drawers. His look of discontent deepened as the lack of swimming shorts meant that they would have to go out and buy a pair.
“Hey Z…“ The boy looked over at him from the bathroom. White foam surrounded Zacky’s mouth and the blue and green tooth brush that was being held between the four-year-old’s lips. Brian sucked his lips into his mouth and clamped down on them with his teeth as he fought the intense urge to laugh at the sight Zacky made, “We’re gonna have to go get you a swimsuit.”
“Yay!” the four-year-old exclaimed around his tooth brush.
Brian picked out clothes for the boy to put on once he washed his face. He then picked out something he hoped didn’t look too much like himself. After Zacky was finished, Brian brushed his teeth and ran a razor over his face. He almost cut himself twice from laughing at the sight of Zacky. The boy was on his step stool next to Brian, using an alligator clip to ‘shave’ his smooth little face. The little boy was giggling as he ran the clip over his cheeks. Brian rinsed his face of what ever shaving cream the razor had missed and then picked Zacky up. “ You think you’re sooooo grown up, huh?” Brian teased as he held Zacky up a little higher than his own head. Zacky giggled as Brian tossed him onto the bed. They both got dressed and headed down stairs.
Brian gave Icky his usual waning to be good; he set the alarm and locked the door behind them. The car ride to the nearest store was fairly boring; Zacky stared out the window while creating his own song and dance about going to the beach.
It didn’t take all that long to get to the beach store. As Brian opened one of the glass double doors, Zacky grabbed on to his free hand. When they walked into the store, a little girl about seven or eight bumped into Zacky as she was running away from another little girl.
Zacky stumbled back a bit until Brian steadied him with a hand. As soon as Zacky had his balance back, he instantly turned to face Brian and held his arms up. “Upie!” he cried, bouncing on his feet a bit.
Brian lifted the four year old up and settled him on his hip. He walked over to the kid’s section and started looking through the racks for something that would fit the little boy in his arms.
The same little girl that had almost knocked Zacky over was running over to the woman standing a few feet from Brian.
“Mommy!” She whined, her voice caused Brian to wince. “Can I get this?” Without even looking at the girl, the woman agreed to buy what ever the girl was holding. Zacky scrunched his face at the little girl before hiding in the guitarist’s neck.
Brian had picked out two swimming shorts for the four year old to try on when the mother of the obnoxious girl came to stand beside him.
“You have such a cute little boy, how old is he?” She asked, as she tilted up her head and pushed her chest forward.
Brian tried not to grimace. He turned to look at the woman, and then to her daughter. He looked back to the woman and raised a brow, “He’s four, and I would suggest that you watch over your own kid before you go after the one she knocked over.” He smiled at her and walked off towards the fitting rooms.
It didn’t take long for Zacky to decide he liked the black and light blue ones over the green swimming shorts. Brian paid for them and asked if Zacky could wear them out. If there was a person immune to the four year old’s bright green eyes; Brian had yet to meet them.
“You so owe me, Zack,” Brian muttered to himself as he tucked the receipt in to his pocket as they left the store; Zacky wearing his new swim shorts.
Brian pulled into a parking space along the beach a few minutes after they left the store. He popped open the trunk and pulled out a bag that had been in there since he had bought the car. It held a large beach blanket, towels, and sunscreen. Lying on top of it was a fairly large umbrella.
He shut the trunk and let Zacky pick out a place that he wanted to sit. The four-year-old watched as the guitarist spread out the blanket and set up the umbrella.
He whined in his throat as Brian pulled out the sun block.
“Zack,” Brian said sternly as he sat on the blanket and pulled the boy closer. Zacky squirmed around as the older man put the lotion on him. He waited for Brian to put the sun block on himself before tugging at his hand. “Can we swim now?” he pleaded.
Brian chuckled at the four year old’s eagerness and nodded. “Yay!” the boy exclaimed and tried to pull the guitarist behind him. Brian grinned, kicked off his flip flops, and let the four year old lead the way down to the water.
Zacky giggled as a wave hit his feet. Holding on to Brian’s hand, he lifted his legs when the wave came.
Brian moved so that the little boy was standing in front of him and took the four year old’s hands in his own. As the next wave came, Brian lifted him out of the water. The guitarist couldn’t help but smile as the boy giggled and cried, “Again, again!”
They jumped waves until Zacky got bored and wanted to actually swim around.
Brian was highly surprised at how well the boy could swim, considering his age. He watched as the four year old swam around, not going too far away from Brian, but enough to test the older man’s boundaries.
Brian was crouching down so that the water reached a few inches below his shoulders. Zacky grinned as evilly as a four year old could at the target the guitarist made. He swam around behind Brian and pounced on him. He wrapped his small arms around the guitarist’s neck as Brian stood to balance Zacky and himself. He raised his arms in back of himself to support Zacky’s bottom, so that the boy was no longer choking him. Brian looked over his shoulder at the boy, “Yes?”
Zacky giggled at him and squirmed to get a better hold around the guitarist. “Swim,” Zacky demanded.
Brian was confused for all of point two seconds. “You want me to swim with you on my back?”
“Yeah,” Zacky said, as though it was the most obvious thing ever; and to the four year old it probably was.
Brian looked down at the water; it was just hitting the bottom of his shorts. While it may have been deep enough for Zacky to swim in, Brian was a lot taller than the four year old. He moved out a few more feet and ducked down in to the water.
“Hold on tight,” he said, and then ducked his head into the water and pushed off with the sand under his feet.
They played around in the water for a while longer. Zacky had eventually gotten bored with riding around on the guitarist’s back; so he started a water fight by splashing as much water as he could at Brian.
“Z, you hungry?” Brian asked as he stood up in the ocean. Zacky shook his head and continued to splash around. “Well, I am. You can stay in the water, but don’t go in past here,” Brian pressed his left hand to Zacky’s lower back and used the blade of his right hand to indicate how far Zacky could go in to the water.
Brian paid his food just enough attention so that he got it into his mouth. The rest of his attention was on the green eyed little boy splashing and swimming around.
As Brian watched the four year old, his eyes drew down in worry; Zacky had stopped swimming and was just sitting in the water.
Brian didn’t get up until he saw Zacky’s arms wrap around his torso.
“Zacky,” he called as he walked over to the four year old. His concern grew as he saw the boy’s body was shaking. Brian jogged over to the boy and picked him up.
He had been about to say the child’s name again, but then realized that he could hear the boy’s teeth chattering. He looked at the four year old’s face and say that Zacky’s chin was moving rapidly and his lips were a little blue.
“Ok, enough playing in the water,” he said sternly as he carried the boy back to where they had their things set up. Brian grabbed one of the towels and started to dry the little boy off.
Once Zacky was as dry as the guitarist could get him; Brian wrapped the little boy in a sun warmed towel and held him close. After a few minutes the teeth chattering and shivering stopped.
It wasn’t long after that that the four year old started to squirm and wriggle his way out of Brian’s arms.
“Do you want to stay a little longer and play in the sand, or do you want to go home and eat grilled cheese?” Brian asked as he watched Zacky stare longingly at the ocean.
He chuckled as Zacky was half paying attention to what he was saying until grilled cheese entered the conversation. Zacky snapped his head around so fast, Brian thought it would detach from his body.
“Yay!” the four year old cried and stood up, “Grilled Cheese!” He tried to help the guitarist pack up their things as quickly as possible.
Brian tossed everything into the trunk and smiled as Zacky hurried him to get into the car.
Brian couldn’t help but laugh at the boy’s enthusiasm when he had parked the car in the driveway and five seconds later, Zacky was waiting impatiently at the front door.
