We still had to make the end of our fight public. Liam came up with the best idea. So I ran on to the stage, sang along with him, and we made up with a handshake, in front of all those people. It was perfect; the fight was over, and the crowd never suspected anything. He's brilliant, that Liam.
Of course, the fights never really stopped. It’s because we never stopped being in love with each other. The fights tend to get shorter and shorter, though. I hit him in his face once, and when I saw his bleeding lip, I just had to kiss the blood away. Another time, he pushed me to the floor, looked at me for less than a moment and before we knew it, we were rolling around, making out. The whole thing ended in a short session on the bed.
Or maybe we’ve grown up. Took us long enough. Grown up as good as we could, in a situation like ours. That second theory really hit me one day. We were at home, with mom. We sat around the table, drinking coffee, the three of us. Liam held my hand. And mom saw it. And she smiled at me. I blushed. But Liam just kept on rambling about everything, ignoring the world around him. He didn’t give a shit. If he wanted to hold my hand, he’d do it.
‘You’ll take care of him, won’t you?’ she asked me when we left. I was standing in the doorway and we both looked at Liam, who was standing in the streets, watching the sky and the people around him.
‘Sure,’ I said. My eyes met hers and it struck me: she knew everything. The knowledge was hidden in the sadness and love in her eyes. But I recognized it.
Our mom’s the best. She immediately saw the shock in my eyes and smiled.
‘It’s okay,’ she whispered. ‘Do you think I’ve never noticed the way you look at each other?’
I sighed. ‘How many…’
‘I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me.’
‘Noel!’ Liam yelled. He wanted to go home.
‘See you, mom,’ I said.
I'm so proud of him. Little, dumb John Lennon. The silent boy standing alone, looking helpless, until he starts to sing. My lead singer. My rock legend. My inspiration and my own, cosy, personal hell. Whether he's hitting me in the face or singing a song for me only. My brother.
I felt him staring at me when we walked down the street.
‘What?’ I asked him.
He shook his head.
Sometimes I wonder what's on his mind. He gets that look on his face sometimes, as if he wants to do something, go somewhere. I hope he never makes up his mind. Because if he does, he won't ever come back.
