‘I swear, I have never seen so much puke in all my life! Urrrgh I don’t envy the poor bastard who has to clean all that up’ said Corey in reference of the amount of puke literally flooding the floor of Slipknot’s tour bus. Their bus had pulled over so the remaining five guys and driver could get some food, and they ate heartily at a small take out chain restaurant and then regretted it about an hour after crossing the US/Mexican border when they had all been hit with a nasty case of food poisoning, so badly Joey and Craig had to be admitted to hospital suffering with extreme dehydration.
‘Get well soon sweetheart’ Jade had said as a green looking Craig was stretchered off the bus by two medics, severely more ill than the rest. She kissed his head and watched his soft eyelashes flicker as his eyes opened before he fell back into a daze, only just about recognising who she was. The tour was put on hold until all members of the band were well enough to play again, and back at Hellbound management HQ Sharon Osbourne was thrown into a spin calling up the 39 venues across the US to reschedule the shows, informing the booking agents and the press, and then calling Jade to see how she was.
‘So how bad are the boys then? Malcolm couldn’t talk for long when he called me as he was riding in the ambulance with Craig’ said Sharon as Jade sat out in the blistering heat while Jen and Corey spoke with management to arrange hotels.
‘He’s really sick Sharon, all of them are really bad but they are quite worried at how dehydrated he was so they got him on a fluid drip and hopefully that should improve him’ said Jade, shouting loudly so Sharon could hear her through the terrible line. Cell reception in Mexico was bad.
‘Well Malcolm said he’d keep me posted, poor boys!’ exclaimed Sharon. ‘And how’s my little superstar?’ she then asked her goddaughter. Sharon and Jade’s mother Jules were old friends, which blessed Jade having quite possibly the coolest godparents in the world; Sharon had been delighted to accept the request when she was born, and years later when she married Ozzy they conducted the christening all over again so he could be included as Jade’s official godfather.
‘She’s wilting in the heat’ laughed Jade, who was suddenly passed a cold drink by Charlotte, who had raided the well stocked fridge on the bus.
‘Put plenty of sun cream on darling; now promise me you will because that skin of yours is so pale! You are the most ghostly looking Sicilian I’ve ever seen!’ said Sharon, who then began to fuss more like a mother hen down the phone, Ozzy sat next to her rolling his eyes. ‘She’s twenty fucking five Sharon, you don’t have to keep on at the girl!’ he muttered in his Birmingham drawl.
‘I promise’ she said, before Sharon informed her of news that made her pleased. She had called Slipknot’s management company and both had arranged for the remaining members to be put up in a hotel in San Miguel de Allende, the town in central Mexico they were meant to be playing in that night. She told Jen, Corey and tour officials that Sharon had arranged everything and off they travelled to check in at said hotel.
When they arrived, luck would have it that Jim, Jess and Jade took their time leaving the bus, leaving Jo and Sid to cook up evil plans. Jo whispered the idea to Sid who after mulling it over for all of five seconds smiled widely.
'To the front desk Robin!' said Sid with a salute in the direction.
'Okay Batman!' replied Jo, making a run for the desk.
'Would it be possible to change one of the twin rooms for a double?' Jo asked the woman behind the desk.
'Absolutely senorita' the woman replied with a wide smile, changing the booking and assigning rooms to all by now gathered, bar Jim and Jade. Once Sid and Jo's plan was put into action they ran off again to the elevator laughing like a couple of kids up to mischief.
‘Ahhhh yes, here is your room key’ said the woman behind the front desk as she a solitary key to Jade when she finally arrived in the lobby.
‘Erm………. We don’t get a room each?’ questioned Jade to the pretty Mexican lady in the smart cream skirt suit.
‘No you and Mr. Root will be sharing a double room, the rest of the party already paired off so it’s just this one left for the both of you. Enjoy your stay Miss Barry’ said the woman cheerfully.
‘I’ve been set up’ thought Jade as she picked up her bag and took the elevator with Jim, who was a mixture of excited and nervous at sharing a room with the woman he could barely tear his eyes away from. Both exchanged sideways glances at each other, but didn’t utter a word until they got to the room.
‘I don’t have a problem sharing if you don’t, but I understand if you want your privacy’ said Jim.
‘I’m sure ill cope for a couple of days, but I’m told I snore and hog the bed’ said Jade, opening the door for the bell boy who had brought their cases up and tipping him ten dollars before he turned and left.
‘Well yeah I have heard you sounding like a fog horn for the last 3 nights I’ve been on the bus, so as long as you can cope with the fact I move around a lot in my sleep we’ll be fine’ said Jim, slightly uneasily. Jade gave him a slap for the fog horn comment before she answered, unzipping her suitcase as she spoke.
‘So both of us are in for a sleepless night then?’ said Jade, realizing there was way more innuendo in her voice than she had intended.
‘Could well be’ answered Jim before pulling his case across the room and unpacking a few things and then excusing himself. He knew Sid of old, and knew this would be something he was bound to be a part of.
‘YOU!’ he bellowed as he walked downstairs into the bar area to see Sid, Corey and Jo all chatting over a round of cold beers.
‘Me? Me what?’ said Sid with the most innocent voice and facial expression you ever did see.
‘Don’t act cute with me dude! I know you set all this up so Jade and I would be sharing a room’ said Jim, picking up Sid’s glass of beer and half draining it.
‘Hey easy with the drink! And so what if I did? I’m helping your joint sexual frustrations!’ said Sid, reaching for his glass and snatching it back. Jim went to answer but realized he would be beaten by anything he said, so just made a frustrated growl deep in his throat and turned to head back upstairs, the three musicians he had left in his wake all falling about laughing.
In the elevator back up, somewhere between being slightly pissed at Sid and slightly uncomfortable with the situation, Jim suddenly smirked; he'd be sharing a bed with the sexiest woman in rock, what the hell was bad about that? And also the other plus point was that because of sharing a room with her he would get to talk to her more, something he had grown to look forward to over the last eight weeks. They would find themselves sat at whatever after show party they were at almost ignoring the rest of the room and merriment that was happening inside it to just chill out and talk to each other.
He remembered what his mother Emma had always said about smart women whenever he found himself in deep conversation with Jade, and that was that ‘a smart woman will hold your interest for years longer than a beautiful one will, looks fade, brains don’t’. Well, with Jade he had found both. She was quickly becoming a very close friend to him, and as he walked back into the room to see her stretched out on the bed, her top riding up and revealing her hips as she yawned and stretched her arms above her head he wondered just how close their current sleeping arrangement could possibly push them together. If he was honest, the only thing that had prevented him from giving her the come on up until now was that he had a huge amount of respect for her; as the credible musician she had become and also for the person she was.
He enjoyed the company of females, coming from a house where he and his father were outnumbered by four to two he was used to women being around, so he would always prefer a female friend over a lover any day so really didn’t want to rock the boat of offend her. If she wanted anything from him that wasn’t strictly friendship he would let her make the first move. Well, that’s what he thought as he sat down on the bed next to her, but over the course of the next six hours he would find that thought changing considerably, beyond his own powers of conscious control.
‘Hey big fella, look what I found!’ she said proudly, pointing to the TV screen which showed the Sky channel Sky One playing, in English.
‘Wow, TV in English, how’d you find that?’ he asked, placing a pillow behind his head and stretching out his unfeasibly tall frame next to her.
‘All the TV’s are set up in Spanish, so I just fiddled with the language settings and got it back to English’ said Jade just before they both laughed at Homer Simpson falling through a glass roof, the episode where he wanted to join Springfield’s Masonic-esque cult had just started.
‘Clever girl’ he said simply, looking at her and smiling with another of those speedy winks, which made Jade’s heart skip a couple of beats. Whenever he did that now she would feel slightly short of breath, he just looked so damn sexy when he winked at her, and the little wink he had flashed her just then did nothing to calm the building nerves in her stomach.
Jen’s ‘fun’ comment had really got stuck in her head since Vegas, yet there was one drawback, a drawback she found herself thinking over as she lay next to him only half watching The Simpsons. The only sex Jade knew was that in a relationship. She had never had a ‘fuck buddy’ as Jess called them, never even had a one night stand. After losing her virginity to her boyfriend when she had been studying in New York, the only other men she had ever had sex with were Stefan and Phil. With Stefan she hadn’t felt uncomfortable at all since he had revealed she was only his second too, but with Phil she had been so nervous and jumpy compared to a man with such vast experience over her she had almost talked herself out of it, until he had sat her down and basically said ‘what in the hell is wrong?’.
‘You know the Phil I let you see is a different guy to the one the rest of the world see’s, so don’t you ever be nervous with me okay?’ he had told her, and reassured her fears. But now she found herself in a similar situation with a man who wouldn’t end up her boyfriend she wondered if Jim would be as reassuring, or just cast her aside because of her limited experience with numerous sexual partners like he no doubt had. She knew what she was doing in bed alright, there she had no inexperience, but she wondered if her ‘low number’ could possibly pose some sort of problem. She inherited the ‘worrying over nothing’ gene from her beloved grandfather Carlo.
‘Jade, chickens, counting, hatched’ she reminded herself suddenly, thinking she really was making a fuss over something that hadn’t even happened. Yet. After that episode of The Simpsons and two of Furturama had come and gone they found themselves just laying there talking, once again slipping into that feeling of comfort they both got from talking, sharing stories with each other. With every long discussion they both engaged in they discovered something new about each other, and liked that their friendship was building on strong ground. Their talking was interrupted briefly by the phone ringing, front desk kindly calling up to tell them the weather forecast was predicting a heat wave and that it would probably be best for persons not used to extreme Mexican heat to stay indoors in the shade, since the temperatures in San Miguel de Allende were breaking records at that moment because of the excruciating heat. They both agreed it was good fortune to be staying in a hotel with a top notch air conditioning system.
After a few hours of talking, and both to their separate amusement a little light flirting Jim and Jade decided to head downstairs in search of food, where they found the rest of their respective bands already sat down. Jade was stolen by the rest of her band as soon as she entered the restaurant area.
‘So?’ they all chorused quietly, going into a huddle over the table so they wouldn’t be heard by anyone else dining around them.
‘So……… what?’ Questioned Jade, playing with one of the silk flowers displayed in a basket for decorative purposes on the centre of the table as her other hand opened a menu.
‘Anything happening?’ asked Jo as she sipped her vodka and orange.
‘For the love of god!’ Jade exclaimed from over her menu, before continuing. ‘Just because there is a bed, us two and no one else there doesn’t mean we are going to jump on each other as soon as the door is locked you know!’ she exclaimed, looking over the choices of food and deciding on Paella.
‘I swear, the amount of sparks flying off you two over the last few weeks, well we only half expected to see you down here!’ said Charlotte, pouring Jade a glass of white wine. The waitress rushed over to take Jade’s order when she alerted her, and the girls were silent until she had bustled away again.
‘Well, there’s something I’ve been thinking about actually, I dunno, I’m a bit…’ Jade began before she was interrupted.
‘Just tell us girl, c’mon spit it out we are your friends! You know we’re here to help’ said Jo with a bright smile.
‘And hinder! I know it was yours and Sid’s idea to set up the rooms like that in the first place!’ said Jade, shaking her finger in a jokingly stern manner at her friend, a little smile curling her lips. They all laughed, and then remained silent as ‘their baby’ (as they lovingly referred to her as, being the youngest of the group) told them of her concerns. They sat and listened as Jade spoke of how she had never been in this situation before and just didn’t know how to play it. She wanted him, that much she was sure of but so far he seemed to be playing things cool, or just not be interested in her sexually. She asked how she could find out without giving him a blatant come on which could end up shattering the friendship they had built up or end up embarrassing her beyond belief if he rebuffed her attempt at seducing him. True to their word, her girls had the answer.
‘Ok’ Jen began, swallowing a mouthful of antipasti she had been eating and lighting a cigarette. ‘So this is what you should do. Let him do all the work, first and foremost. You know how to work your own sexuality Jade, you do it onstage every damn night and you did it to hook Phil so now you do it again, but keep it subtle, make him so fucking wound up he can’t help but dive on you, and you know how to do that, god girl you’ve got more guts than most people, just go for it! But like I said, to cover your back just keep it subtle’ said Jen. Charlotte nodded in agreement before pitching in her two cents on the matter.
‘She’s right JB, it’s the little things men notice that we don’t ever think they do which are the diamonds to getting a man to do anything you want him to, so work those! Oh and by the way, I don’t think you have to worry about him not reciprocating this attraction; he hasn’t stopped staring at you since you sat down. No don’t all look for god’s sake!’ said Charlotte as the girls all (bar Jade) turned around to look in the direction the guys were sat in. Jade took a large swig of her wine and pondered what her friends had said, and thanked them all for their advice. They were right, she knew how to work her sex appeal subtly….. and if she needed any more convincing, she got it from Corey when they were stood at the bar together after their early dinner ordering drinks to take back upstairs to their rooms. The restaurant was just too hot to sit in; the heat from the kitchens even combated the air conditioning.
‘That man wants you in ways you couldn’t even begin to dream of sweetheart’ said Corey as he leaned in close to Jade.
‘I wish everyone would stop bugging me about it! And how do you even know that for sure huh Taylor?’ she replied, playing with a cube of ice that was rapidly melting on the bar surface in front of her.
‘The way he looks at you Barry, says it all without him ever having to open his mouth’ said Corey, giving her a mega watt smile as she turned a little pink in the cheeks.
‘Hahahaha! If that made you blush, well, just you wait’ said Corey, taking one of his many beers from the barman and sipping it with a knowing grin.
‘What? Wait for what exactly? What do you know that I don’t?’ said Jade suddenly, thanking the bar man as he put down two bottles of JD and one bottle of coke in front of her.
‘You ain’t heard the groupie gossip then? Or know the reason behind a particular nickname we gave James?’ said Corey, grin widening by the minute.
‘Nope, but I’m sure you’re going to tell me’ said Jade.
‘Coke can’ said Corey with a snort of laughter.
‘Excuse me?’ said Jade, perplexed.
‘We call him coke can, because believe me his dick is about the same circumference’ said Corey, who then burst into hysterics at Jade’s reaction. She wished she hadn’t decided to finish the mouthful of wine she had left at that moment; the bar drank more of it than she did since most of her mouthful was sprayed out in shock.
‘WHAT? And how the hell would you know?’ said Jade, her eyebrows raised so high they threatened to disappear into her hairline at any second, only making Corey laugh more.
‘Well number one I have showered with the dude, number two groupies aren’t often discreet and number three I walked in on him screwing his now ex girlfriend back home years ago and saw slightly more of Jim than I ever wanted to. So there you have it, go forth and fuck’ said Corey, lifting the box of beer and walking away from the bar, leaving a shell shocked, if not ever so slightly intrigued Jade in his wake.
