Zack was edgy, ever since Brian had spelled out to him what exactly you could do with someone’s phone number he hadn’t been able to sit still. He wanted to call Matt, but then again he didn’t want Matt to get involved. Pig scared him, he scared him more than he was even willing to admit to himself and he didn’t want Matt to get mixed up with him.
He looked out the window for the hundredth time and silently yelled at himself, he was only making himself more and more paranoid by looking out on the street. He didn’t even know what car Pig drove, or if he would even be in a car. He shook his head and walked resolutely into the kitchen and tried to ignore the nervous fluttering of his stomach. He glanced at the clock and realized they had an hour to get to work and his stomach tightened more, “Bri, we need to go soon.” He called; he wasn’t really sure where his friend was in the tiny apartment. Brian stuck his head around the corner that led to the bedroom, “I know, did you leave your makeup at The Club or is it in your duffel?” he asked, he pretended like he wasn’t as freaked out as Zack but he knew Brian was also having a bit of a breakdown. He forced his frazzled mind to think back to Saturday night and finally he answered, “Eyeliner is in the little pouch on the front and the rest of it is still at The Club.”
Brian made a face and then did an exaggerated sigh, “Fine, I’ll just do everything when I get there.” He disappeared around the corner again and Zack giggled and followed him so he could grab his bag. He made sure the clothes in the bag were clean and he double checked to make sure his make up was indeed at The Club.
The butterflies in his stomach got worse when they finally walked out the door, he felt like he was going to be sick. He hadn’t been anywhere close to this nervous since his first show and he didn’t like the feeling. He made sure he locked the door as they were leaving, but he couldn’t help but think the action was in vain.
The usual bantering at The Club was subdued and the atmosphere had an unnatural weight to it. Zack tried to ignore it but it was obvious to everyone that he was nervous. He hadn’t eaten anything almost all day and his physical fatigue from the lack of fuel was combining with his mental and emotional weariness and that made the night drag. So far Pig hadn’t shown up but it was still early, only eight-thirty, he had plenty of time to make an appearance.
Zack was in his area trying to calm himself before he went out again when he felt more than heard the ripple of tension go through backstage. He looked up and saw Brian practically running toward him. His stomach tightened even more and he felt his heart speed up, he could hear his pulse thundering in his ears, he forced himself to take deep breaths as his stress level pushed closer to its breaking point.
Brian grabbed his hand and pulled him over to his dressing area out of sight of most of the others, “Pig just walked in.” he said a little hoarsely. Zack’s body went cold as he stared at him, “What?”
Brian pulled him into a warm hug when he shivered but didn’t say anything. Zack’s mind barely registered his friend’s warmth.
Denial: He can’t do that. The police know he broke in; security can just call the police.
Logic: If he knew security would call the police he wouldn’t have come in.
Reality: Then we’ll call the police.
Logic: We can. But is he stupid enough to not take that into account?
Denial: Yes!
Reality: I don’t know…
Zack raised his head and the nervousness left him suddenly, “Security can just call the police, they know he broke in and stole the numbers.” His voice was an eerie calm that he didn’t quite recognize. Brian pulled back and looked at him, “We’ve all tried to call, no one’s answering. I know Emil and Quinn have tried twice. I think we’re on our own here Zacky.” Brian told him quietly. The momentary calm left and panic overtook him. He wasn’t going out there with Pig. He didn’t want to see those beady eyes roaming over his body, he didn’t want to see his sick possessive smile or have those greasy hands reach out to touch him. He shuddered almost violently and Brian pulled him close again and gripped him tightly.
He could feel his mind slipping away from rationality into total panic and he fought to bring it back. There was something very wrong with The Club and its workings and the police which meant they were indeed on their own. They could, in theory, just leave and refuse to perform, but given the strangeness of the night that could very well backfire. Pig could just go to their apartment and corner them there. Another shiver made his flesh prickle when he thought about that.
“Matt.” He said quietly. He felt some of the panic ebb when he thought of his boyfriend; he was more than certain that Matt would destroy Pig if he tried anything. But again, he didn’t want to drag Matt into his problems.
“What about Matt?” Brian murmured. Zack sighed shakily, “I wanna call him, but I don’t want Pig to know…” he squeezed Brian and then relaxed against his warm body as small shivers continued to ripple through him. Brian surprised him by chuckling, “I think Matt could hold his own against Pig.” He said; he kissed Zack’s temple, “Call him. It’ll probably make us all feel better knowing he’s out there.” He whispered. Zack nodded and finally pulled away from him and went back to his area to get his phone.
Matt answered on the third ring just as Zack was beginning to despair again, “Hello?” behind his husky voice were two others, they sounded like they were yelling at something, or someone.
“Matt, it’s Zack…” he bit his lip suddenly feeling ridiculous and needy. He was a big boy, he could look after himself, but he thought of Pig again and those feelings disappeared.
“Hey, what’s up?” his voice was warm and friendly and Zack felt a little more confident asking him, “Matt, um, I know it’s late, but, could you, uh, come to The Club?” his voice sounded thin and frightened to him when he had wanted it to be smooth and calm. Matt had no problem picking up on his mood, “What’s wrong?” he asked seriously, the two voices in the background quieted, but Zack didn’t know if they were listening or if Matt had left the room.
“Pig—er—this guy that comes in a lot is here and he…” he paused again but forced the words out before Matt began to doubt his sanity, “he scares me.” He whispered quietly. Matt’s voice was calm and reassuring, “S’okay baby, I’ll be there as soon as I can. No one’s gonna hurt you.”
“Thank you.” His voice was a little stronger but fear still made it tremble. He had no idea where Matt was and he had no idea what would happen when he made it to The Club.
“I’ll see you soon Zack, I love you.” Some of the tension left his body with Matt’s words and a small thrill of something that wasn’t fear spread through him and warmed his cold skin, “I love you too Matt.”
Anthony reported back after his set that Matt had walked in and Zack practically ran out to meet him. He didn’t pay any attention to anything else, he just wanted Matt; wanted to feel his arms around him and smell his spicy cologne and feel his steady heart beat, that’s all he cared about. Danny took the stage and the lights dropped but he managed to find Matt over at the bar in the same place they had met.
If Matt hadn’t seen him coming it was likely Zack would’ve sent them both crashing to the floor when he jumped on him. Matt held him seemingly without effort a couple inches off the ground and lightly kissed his cheek, “That bad huh.” He whispered He put Zack on the floor and wrapped his arms around his waist; Zack nodded. He wrapped his arms around his neck and felt the fear and tension leave him when he rested his head on Matt’s shoulder.
“What the fuck is up with that? Every time I jump on you, you move or drop me on my ass.” A sulky voice said from Matt’s other side. Matt laughed, “Because you are one heavy mother fucker.” Matt’s body jerked slightly like someone had hit him and Zack moved so he could look at the speaker.
His eyes widened when he saw the tall raven haired man standing next to Matt, he was easily over six feet tall. Yet, even with his height there was a certain amount of grace about him. His tattooed arms weren’t as muscled as Matt’s; he had the sinewy muscles of a dancer. In Zack’s eyes he was painfully thin but then again he’d never seen anyone quite as tall as him before.
“Are you calling me fat?” he said glaring at Matt. Matt snorted, “In so many words.” He took a hand off Zack’s waist to block Jimmy’s next hit. A tattooed arm slipped around Jimmy’s slim waist and pulled him away from Matt. Johnny peeked out from his side laughing and Zack was again struck by the severe height difference between the two; Johnny was smaller than him, he looked like he barely hit 5’6”.
“Sorry Zack,” Matt said loud enough for them to hear, “they follow me around like lost puppies.”
Jimmy stuck his tongue out at him and Johnny lightly tickled Jimmy’s side making him jump, “What choice do I have? If I don’t you just pick me up and take me with you anyway.” He said. He dodged away from Jimmy’s hands when he made a grab for him and Matt snorted. While the two were distracted he gave Zack a gentle squeeze and his demeanor became serious, “I’m here baby,” he murmured, “I’ll keep you safe.” He pulled Zack against him in a more comfortable position and Zack relaxed completely in his arms.
“Do you think Jimmy and Johnny can keep themselves occupied for awhile?” he asked sleepily, he could feel a tension headache building and the loud music wasn’t helping. Matt snorted, “Indefinitely.”
Zack reluctantly pulled away from him but kept a firm hold of his hand while Matt yelled at his two friends over the music, “Jimmy, behave yourself.” He laughed and turned back to Zack when the tall man gave him a wounded look, “I’m yours angel.” He whispered huskily. Zack sighed and pulled him to the left side of the bar; he was well aware of the dozen or so people watching him and he felt his cheeks color a little but the ache in his head made him push through the ‘Employees Only’ door and head to the back room.
He sat down heavily on the lumpy mattress and rubbed his head, Matt sat down next to him and wrapped an arm around his waist, “What’s wrong Zack?” his voice was soft and worried and to Zack’s surprise he easily pulled him onto his lap. He moved around until he was comfortable and then started hesitantly in his explanation.
“There’s this guy, we call him Pig because that’s what he looks like, it’s what he acts like to but anyway; he started coming to The Club close to a year ago and he’s always given me the creeps.” He paused for a moment and Matt tenderly kissed his neck and he sighed and continued, “The night before last, when I was with you…” he felt a flush of arousal go through him when he thought about their night and day together and Matt’s lips again found his neck, a little less innocent then they had been. Zack collected himself again and continued, “…Pig broke in and stole our number.” He shuddered and Matt’s arms tightened around him and he relaxed a little, “He knows where we live and now he’s either threatened Rob with something or he’s one of Rob’s friends because security’s not doin’ anything about him.” Tears stung his eyes and he angrily wiped them away, crying like a little girl wasn’t going to make Pig go away.
Matt was quiet for a moment, but his arms stayed tight around him so Zack didn’t worry too much. Lips pressed against him again and Matt’s husky voice whispered in his ear, “You guys can stay with me.” It wasn’t so much of a request as a declarative. Zack didn’t argue, so long as Brian was with him he didn’t care where he went.
Zack woke up when someone gently shook him but he didn’t immediately get up. Instead he cuddled closer to Matt’s warm side and tried to go back to sleep; he didn’t feel like dealing with reality at the moment and his dreams had been wonderful.
“C’mon Zacky get up.” Brian poked his side and he mewled pitifully as he started to wake up more. Matt’s rough laugh shook his chest but the sound was pleasant enough that it didn’t bother him. Suddenly his warm body was gone; Zack sat up confused and found Matt standing next to Brian stretching. He pouted but reluctantly got up. Brian looked absolutely worn Zack looked him over worriedly, “What’s going on?” he asked hugging him. Brian all but collapsed against him and sighed tiredly, “Total and complete anarchy.” Was all he mumbled. Zack held him tighter, “I think it’s your turn for a nap.” He whispered. Brian sighed deeply, “I’d rather just get this night over and done with.” He said straightening out again. Zack reached up and kissed his cheek and then gently grabbed his hand and followed Matt out into the unknown.
The front room was absolute madness. Security might as well have gone home for all the help they were. They stood politely or ashamedly out of the way in the shadows and looked everywhere but the stage. Brian glared at all of them as they slipped back into the room.
Lingering sleep was banished by fear again when Zack saw Emil wasn’t even doing his set but just trying to avoid the people practically laying on the stage trying to get to him. It wouldn’t be long before one of the drunken idiots would decide to get on the stage; Zack wasn’t at all confident security would stop them.
That thought made him freeze halfway across the floor. Pig had jumped on the stage when security had been doing their job. There were no doubts in his mind that Pig would get up on stage with him; bile rose in his throat at the thought of that thing touching him and he shuddered violently.
“Zack what’s wrong?” Matt and Brian asked the same question and almost the same time and he shook his head and pulled them both back toward the back room. Neither protested, it was nearly impossible to hear anything with the loud music and the obnoxious cries form the revelers.
Once they were back in the relative quiet of the hallway Zack told them what was troubling him, “He’s waiting for me.” He said shakily, Matt slipped behind him and hugged him close to his warm torso and Brian pressed against his front, “Who’re you talking about? Pig?” Brian whispered tiredly. Zack nodded, “You think security’s gonna do anything if he gets on stage with me? They might as well just go home they aren’t doing anything.” Fear made his voice sharp and Brian nodded in agreement and understanding.
“Well it’s not like we can just leave and go home.” He muttered darkly stepping away and glaring at the door.
“You guys are staying with me.” Matt said quietly, Zack leaned his head back onto his shoulder and relaxed. Brian looked back surprised but after a moment nodded hesitantly. Matt’s arms tightened around him minutely, “Have you seen Jimmy and Johnny?” he asked Brian, Zack rolled his head forward and clarified before Brian could ask, “The really tall guy with black hair and tattoos and the really short guy with a mohawk.”
Brian shook his head, “I’ve only been watching the first row.”
“Do you think they left?” Zack asked quietly. Matt shook his head, “Nah, Jimmy and I really do follow each other around like shadows and where ever Jimmy goes Johnny goes so they’re still here. They’re probably hiding behind the bar or something.” He gave Zack another gentle squeeze and released him, “What time is it?” he asked Brian.
“It was close to ten when I came back here.” He said shrugging, “Why?”
“Our shift doesn’t end until The Club closes at three.” Zack said knowing exactly what Matt was thinking. Matt got a thoughtful look on his face that Zack was beginning to recognize; he was scheming something. Finally he asked, “What do you think would happen if the dancers left?”
Brian and Zack stared at him for a moment before they looked at each other. The entire crew was the best in town; they couldn’t really fire them unless they wanted to hire a greeny and then cross their fingers and hope he’d work out.
“I think…we would run the risk of getting fired but…” Brian said putting their thoughts into words, “I don’t think Rob would want to risk bringing in a bunch of new dancers to replace us.”
Zack looked at the door as the thumping from the music began to quiet, Emil’s set was done, and he was next. He looked at Matt again and thought about the Pig waiting for him and grabbed Brian’s hand, “Let’s get the fuck outta here.”
A/N: Wee! Updates =D
And yes, for those curious readers, I did take down ‘Forget to Remember’. I’ve decided the plotline, characters, and relationships are too complicated for me to try and rush through so it is sitting on the back burner. I’m still working on it and reworking the chapters to make it a bit more interesting and easier to follow.
Also, I’ve got a little ficlet I’m working on and an idea for a sequel to ‘Such Synful Thoughts’ and one for ‘Wolf and Man.’ So I’ve got lots of ideas and no time to write them, lol.
