It was just after mid-day Christmas Day and the weather wasn't looking any better. Over the previous night there had been a lot of rain and snow showers, and everything was now covered in an un-known depth of snow. Ruki was sitting directly in the middle of his sofa, knees bent up to his chest and feet curled over the edge. He had actually changed when he woke up at sometime after ten that morning and he was now in baggy black tracksuit pants and a short-sleeve black t-shirt. His messy bed-hair had been brushed to look somewhat neater as it was now flat and hung in his face. He was cradling a large mug of coffee to his knees while the other hand held the phone to his ear, currently talking to his mother. For the last hour they had been talking mostly about him and if he was looking after himself. So far Ruki's responses to most of his mother's questions were either 'Yes, mom ...' or 'No, mom I'm not ...' - like he'd had the same conversation time and time again.
"Takanori, are you listening to me?"
His mother said when she got sick of hearing the 'Yes, mom' and 'No, mom'. Ruki laughed.
"Yeah I'm listening, don't worry. I promise I do cook a proper meal for myself at least once a week".
"Takanori!"
"I'm kidding!"
Ruki laughed and he heard his mother sigh deeply on the other end. Ruki sipped at his coffee as he kept listening to his mother speak.
"I don't know what I'm going to do with you. Sometimes I really do wish you had stayed here and gotten a regular job, that way I'd always see you and there wouldn't be tension between you and your father".
"Well there's not much can be done about it. I wanted to be somebody, not just another convenience-store worker. And it's not like I'm far away, it's only ... what ... fifteen minutes from here to there?"
"You know what I mean, honey. Have you even thought about the future; you may want to settle down with a nice girl and get married. What would she think if you're always busy with your music thing?"
Ruki had to smile to himself for a moment before he cleared his throat.
"Actually, I'm ahead of you on that one. I am seeing someone right now. I met her after one of our Lives back at the start of November. Her name is Mika, we've been together since about the middle of November".
Ruki's mother gasped quite sharply that he thought she was having a heart attack, until ...
"Darling, Takanori has a girlfriend! Since November!"
It was then Ruki realised she was telling his father. A mumbling could be heard in the background and then his mother laughed.
"Your father says 'its about time'. I'm so proud of you Takanori, I can't wait to meet her!"
"Eh, settle down mom, I haven't been able to see her for a month. Let us spend some more time together before you think about scaring her away. We got together just before we went on tour and New Years Eve will be the first time I've seen her since then".
"Sorry honey, I was just excited. Well that's great, I hope she's Miss Right".
Ruki smiled and thought 'I know she is'. It was around about now when his mother decided she needed to go and give her grumpy husband some lunch. Ruki laughed and obliged to let her go. But before both of them hung up, his mother managed to organise when to bring little Mitsu back to his place - they both confirmed mid-day Wednesday was great because then his parents could stay for a few hours to catch up, seeing they weren't busy at all that day. Ruki and his mother said their goodbyes before he hung up and dropped the cordless phone next to him. While he held his mug with both hands and sipped at the coffee, he glanced at the clock in the far corner of the living room beside the veranda doors - it showed almost twelve-thirty.
Mika had already messaged him that morning - the very reason he'd woken up in the first place - to say she would call him the first chance she got. His reply had been 'don't rush, I will be here all day', hence why he'd taken the chance to call home for a while. Not that he was worrying but he wondered if she would be able to call since it would be family time for her. Suddenly his cell-phone started rattling across the top of the coffee table in front of him. He dropped his bare feet to the floor and snatched the phone before it threw itself onto the floor. In looking at the flashing display it showed Mika's name. He smiled and flipped the phone open before putting it to his ear.
"Ruki?!"
Asked an anxious and excited Mika. Ruki laughed and Mika sighed with relief.
"Oh my gosh, I've been dying to call you since last week!"
"Oh believe me babe, I wanted to call you yesterday when I got home. It's so quiet here now, since I'm not sharing with the others now".
"Five grown men all sharing the one small place ... you miss that?"
"In a manner of speaking, yeah ..."
Mika giggled as Ruki continued.
"Hey you sound very excited over there, what's going on? Have you been drinking?"
"No! I'm just happy to finally get to talk to you. And besides, I can talk loudly now because Otou-san and Okaa-san have gone out to buy something for Christmas Dinner".
"So does that mean I can talk dirty to you?"
"Uummm ..."
Ruki laughed - he could tell Mika was embarrassed but he cut in before she could reply.
"Don't worry, I'm kidding".
"Hmm ... oh, I also wanted to tell you too. Both of my parents are actually going away over the New Years Holiday - from the 30th of December to the 2nd of January, so I'll have like four days on my own".
"Oh yeah? Well did you still want to come over New Years Eve?"
"Yeah absolutely!"
"Great, then why not stay here for those four days?"
"Oh you think so? But you only get one week off work then you'll be busy again. Wouldn't you rather spend most of the time relaxing in your own space?"
"Are you kidding? If I do that I'll drive myself mad; I haven't been able to so much as touch you for over a month. Come over after your parents leave, then go home before they come back ... please?"
Mika was silent on the other end for a moment, as she thought about the idea of being alone with Ruki for almost four whole days. While Ruki sat with his elbows resting on his knees he stayed quiet, suddenly realising he shouldn't have asked her so quickly. She probably wouldn't be comfortable being alone with him just yet. In fact he was about to apologise and tell her to not worry when ...
"You know what ... that sounds great. You right Ruki; I miss being able to at least hold your hand. The phone calls were great over the last month but I miss YOU".
Ruki paused for a second as he realised Mika really wanted to stay with him over the New Years Holiday - he then found himself smiling warmly, relieved. He'd actually have at least four days of Mika to himself - well that meant his band mates wouldn't be seeing him and Mika for New Years Eve. Suddenly he remembered over a month ago, when Reita asked him when he was going to invite Mika over - at the time he thought Reita was talking about something else, until he quickly corrected himself. But that 'something else' was now playing on Ruki's mind; he couldn't help it.
"Ruki?"
That very thing was probably the reason why Mika hesitated in deciding if she wanted to stay with him through the New Years break.
"Hey, are you alright?"
Ruki was never going to force Mika into anything in the first place ... but he was certainly considering talking to her about it, so he knew where he stood with her.
"Ruki, what's wrong? Why won't you answer me?"
Ruki snapped out of his thoughts when he heard Mika calling for him - by the sound of her panicked voice, she'd been trying to get his attention for a little while.
"Oh I'm so sorry Mika, I just blacked out for a second. I'm all right now. So you really want to stay here while your parents are away? That's great, I hoped you would. Just think, you'll probably be one of only a very select few people who'll see me in my sloppy state".
"Your what? Sloppy state?"
Mika giggled and Ruki went on to clarify.
"I mean no make-up, no hair styled, baggy clothes ..."
"That sounds wonderful, especially when you're constantly having hair and make-up done for shows and stuff. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to have to do that all the time; you're very patient".
Ruki laughed and sat back against the sofa.
"Only sometimes, but then I remember why I'm doing it and I stop hating it. It's just all part of what I love doing, so I just can't hate it. Besides, if I wasn't doing all of this, we wouldn't know each other right now".
Mika made a soft 'hmm' sound, like she understood what he meant - the whole 'everything happens for a reason' thing. But there was also the other way - what if Ruki had never given Mika his jacket flower, or what if she was never in the front row? He'd still be doing what he loved and she'd still be admiring from afar. Ruki was about to say something since Mika went quiet but she spoke before him.
"I love you, Ruki ..."
She said it so softly that he thought her parents must have come home and she didn't want them to hear her ... but then he heard the faint sound of a sniff coming from her end. Ruki made a soft 'shh' sound to her and lowered his voice.
"Hey ... no crying. You know I love you too ... I'm not going anywhere until you tell me to stop. Because until the day you tell me it's over, you will stay a permanent part of my future ... okay?"
"... You really mean that?"
"Damn right I do. As long as you're willing to put up with me, I'll find a way to prove it".
"Oh I think I can put up with you for that long".
Ruki smiled as Mika laughed - he hated to know she was upset; her laugh always made him smile. Then he remembered back in the car park at the bands management building, where they'd been talking about New Years Eve plans. It was Kai that had asked for the girls phone numbers, but he thought he'd run something past Mika first before asking for numbers.
"Hey, I've been thinking too. Yesterday before all of us split to go home, we were talking about New Years Eve. I said I was probably doing something with you, so they wondered if Kira, Megumi, Ai and Kikyo were busy. Do you know what they are doing?"
"Hmm I imagine they were just going to gather together at Kira's place again like last year. But seeing I won't be there, who knows. Why, what did you guys have in mind?"
"Well Reita mentioned during our Tour that he'd asked Kira if she'd be free sometime to do something together. I was thinking maybe setting them up? Like I could get him to invite her over to his place or visa versa?"
"Hmm I do recall Kira saying the same thing, that he'd asked her. Well I could give you her number, then you could make Reita call her? Trust me, there's a very high chance she would go to his place ... she won't stop talking about him".
Ruki laughed and leaned forward to snatch a small note-pad and pen from his coffee table, where he quickly wrote down Kira's number as Mika read it out-loud. Finally he drew a big circle around the number and dropped the pen.
"Okay, I'll call him tonight. Now about Megumi, Ai and Kikyo ... I doubt Kai, Aoi and Uruha want to try dating them yet because it's probably too soon for them".
"Yes, I understand what you mean. They are the nice guys, who take things slowly".
"Gee thanks, you make me sound like a jerk".
Mika giggled and Ruki went on.
"So I'm thinking they may all go over to Uruha's place for a little party or something. Maybe see if we can get Megumi, Ai and Kikyo over there as well?
"Oh yeah, they'd love that! I think Megumi has just become completely love-struck by Kai-chan. Kikyo has a lot in common with Uruha-kun so she'd go. Ai is stubborn so she tries not to let on that she likes Aoi-kun but she would definitely go as well".
Ruki liked all of the dirt Mika was digging up about her friends really liking his band mates, and he smiled mischievously. Things were starting to get very interesting ...
"Alright, I'll see what they're planning to do while you talk to Megumi, Ai and Kikyo. Then I could message you tonight maybe, about what they're doing. Could I get their numbers from you, then either Kai, Aoi or Uruha can call them".
"Yeah that should be fine, I don't think they would mind ..."
Ruki quickly sat forward again and took up the pen to write another four phone numbers down, also writing each of the girl's names above the numbers. He then had to smile to himself that here he was with Mika and they were plotting to set everyone up together - she obviously realised her friend's crushes, just like Ruki saw it in his band mates. Then Ruki dropped his pen again, took his empty coffee mug and stood up to wander into his little kitchen.
"Okay, thanks for their numbers. And it looks like we won't have much trouble convincing any one".
Mika giggled and made a little 'hmm' sound.
"Oh I think it's cute. Especially Aoi-kun; he's the oldest but he seems to act like teenager around Ai".
"He acts like a teenager anyway, no matter where or when".
Ruki snorted and set his mug in the sink. Mika gave a short laugh and sighed.
"Well, I should go. My parents will probably be home any minute now ... though I don't want to stop talking to you. Times like this I wish I could make time stop".
"Don't worry. If you have to go, you have to go. Besides, Christmas is family time so you should spend the time with your parents. The only reason I'm not spending it with mine is because I only just got back from Tour yesterday, so my mom insisted that they wouldn't visit today. They're coming over on Wednesday instead".
"Oh that's very nice of them to think of you".
"They know about you, too. Mom is especially excited to meet you".
"O-oh really?"
Ruki smiled and leaned against the bench - he could tell by Mika's voice that she was nervous.
"It's okay, I told her to let us spend some time with just the two of us first".
"Oh I'm not worried about meeting your parents. I just felt guilty then, because your parents know but mine don't ... here we have to wait until you finish the Tour".
"Which we both agreed on, so chill. We said we'd approach them together, right?"
Mika made another 'hmm' sound and Ruki nodded even though she couldn't see it.
"Okay then ... now stop worrying about it. Lets do one thing at a time ... like looking forward to you staying here for a few days?"
"Yeah ... I should work out what I'm going to tell them before I think about packing some stuff. If I say I'm going to stay at Kira's, then I have to make sure Kira knows just in case my parents call her house or something. Cause if she'd not going to be there-"
"Hey hey, relax. Just discuss it with Kira or even your other friends as well, I'm sure you'd work out something between you".
"Yeah, your right ... I just worry too much when it comes to my parents. Okay, I really should go now. I love talking to you, and yes I will look forward to staying with you".
Ruki smiled warmly and looked down at the floor.
"Good girl. You take care, and have a good remainder of Christmas Day, ne? Aishiteru ne".
"Hmm, aishiteru Ruki ... see you soon".
Ruki smiled again, waiting for Mika to hang up before he too closed his cell-phone. He didn't move away from the bench just yet; just stood with his arms crossed over his chest, one hand holding the phone up to rest against his mouth thoughtfully. Only four days until Mika was to come over - that meant he had four days to do some shopping for a little more food, in between his parents visiting, not to mention calling Reita, Aoi, Kai and Uruha about New Years Eve. It didn't sound like a lot but he'd loose at least half of Wednesday with his parents bringing Mitsu back to him. Ruki stood away from the bench and walked back into the lounge area to look at the clock - it was now dangerously close to two in the afternoon.
Ruki walked around the edge of his sofa to sit down in the middle of it again. He snatched the cordless phone from the seat beside him and glanced at the numbers of the girls - he thought now would be a good time to start calling the other guys. So he leaned back and slouched in his seat while he speed-dialled Uruha's number first, then setting the phone to his ear. While he waited for Kai to answer, he glanced at the clock again - chances are it would take him the rest of the afternoon to call each of the guys and talk about his and Mika's plans for them. Then he had to message Mika about what was going on ... Ruki began to wonder if he'd even have time to make himself some dinner.
* * *
A quarter past five in the early evening, and Ruki was still on the phone to his last victim, Reita. While they talked Ruki was leaning against the kitchen bench beside his stove, occasionally stirring a small pot of noodles that was simmering on the hot plate. Yes, he was in the middle of cooking himself some pasta for dinner, one of his specialties. Since two o'clock he'd spent the time ringing around to his band mates and proposing the ideas he'd talked about with Mika. Firstly he'd rung Uruha to see if he was planning a little party at his place again - Uruha confirmed that he was, so Ruki game Kikyo's, Megumi's and Ai's phone number to him. That way he could call around to them and ask if they wanted to join the party. Then Ruki rang Kai to make sure he was going to Uruha's party and that Megumi would probably be there. Next he rang Aoi, also to make sure Aoi went to the party for Ai's sake. Of course Aoi had exclaimed to Ruki to mind his own business about Ai - Ruki could tell Aoi was embarrassed, hence why he got defensive.
So it was settled - Kai, Aoi, Uruha, Megumi, Ai and Kikyo would all be spending their time at Uruha's party. Ruki had also suggested to Uruha that he even offer for the girls to stay over with him, Aoi and Kai, if they didn't want to travel home that night. Uruha had gone on to say that he didn't have any spare bedrooms, to which Ruki argued that he had plenty of space in the lounge area anyway. Uruha had just sighed in defeat and promised that he would offer for them to stay. Ruki assured Uruha that it wasn't any kind of set-up, so that Kai and Megumi were forced together, or Aoi and Ai or Uruha and Kikyo - just a nice gesture so the girls wouldn't have to drive home in possible snow with people out in the streets celebrating the New Year. Uruha just snorted and said 'whatever'. And finally after doing a lot of persuading with the guys, Reita was last but not least on Ruki's list.
"So anyway, were you thinking of going to Uruha's party New Years Eve?"
"Uh ... probably yeah, if that's what everyone was doing".
"Well I'm actually having Mika over for a few days over New Years break, but Uruha is hosting a party with Aoi and Kai. Megumi, Kikyo and Ai are most likely going too".
"Ah great. What about Kira, is she going?"
"Actually, that's what I wanted to talk to you about ... see Mika told me that Kira said you wanted to do something sometime when you both weren't busy. Which is what you told me during the Tour, right?"
Reita was silent for a moment and then he slowly said ...
"...Yeah?"
"Sooo ... Mika gave me Kira's cell phone number ... why don't you call her, invite her over for the Eve?"
"Are you joking? My place is a mess Ruki, I can't invite anyone over!"
"Its called 'cleaning' Reita ... you've got about five or six days to do it".
Reita sighed and made little mumbling noises. Ruki rolled his eyes and went back to stirring the noodles while he waited for Reita to make up his mind.
"Oh I don't know, Ruki ... we've just got back from Touring, I haven't seen Kira since the café ... now you expect me to invite her over just like that? That's what I call 'being desperate'."
Ruki chuckled and stood up straight.
"Not when Mika told me that you are all Kira talks about ..."
Reita stayed silent, most likely thinking about what Ruki just said. Finally Ruki picked up the note-pad that was sitting on the bench - from him giving out numbers all day.
"Do you have a pen?"
"...Yeah".
Ruki read Kira's number out so Reita would have time to write it down. After Ruki finished, there was a short pause before he could hear Reita muttering 'I can't believe I'm doing this ...'
"Ah you'll thank me one day, trust me. Oh and you can't get out of it either, because Mika is giving the heads to Kira that your going to call her".
"You're an asshole, Ruki".
"Oh your welcome ... now I'm going to go finish making my dinner, so get to it and call Kira. I have to message Mika to let her know our evil plan is working".
"Ah go choke on your fucking pasta, you sick bastard".
Ruki laughed and hung up at the same time as Reita - maybe he hit a sensitive nerve with Reita just then. Well anyway Ruki smiled as he kept stirring the noodles, happy that he was able to convince Uruha to invite Megumi, Kikyo and Ai for a party, and then Reita to invite Kira over. Things were indeed going surprisingly according to plan, almost so that it was too good to be true. But Ruki wasn't about to jinx it, so he stopped thinking about it and bent down to open a cupboard under the bench, where he retrieved a bowl for his pasta. Once he'd served up a few ladles of noodles, he then covered it with a layer of tomato sauce that had been simmering in another pot beside the noodles. Before heading back into the lounge area, he snatched a fork from the cutlery draw and then left to go back to his sofa.
Once settled into the middle of the sofa, he brought his legs up and sat cross-legged with the bowl cradled in his lap. Before settling down to eat and watch TV, he picked up his cell phone from the seat beside him and quickly set a message to Mika ...
"Uruha is going to call Megumi, Kikyo and Ai about the party. Kai and Aoi are going too. Reita is going to call Kira tonight to invite her over. Our plan worked. XoXo"
Once sent, he dropped the phone again and swapped for the TV remote. He switched into the only semi-interesting thing on TV at that moment - another ridiculous game show. At least he could watch the news at six o'clock. While Ruki shovelled a couple of forks of pasta into his mouth and half tuned into the game show, his cell started beeping at receiving a new text message. He picked it up and noticed Mika had replied.
"That's great! I've let my friends know what's going on too. And Kira agreed to go along with my story about staying with her while my parents are away. I hope the guys aren't too embarrassed about asking my friends out - they will have heaps of fun. xoxoxo"
Ruki smiled while he chewed on his mouthful of pasta - he wasn't worried about the others; he was more concerned about having enjoying his time with Mika, before going away again. Ruki didn't worry about replying to Mika's message because he knew that if he did, they would spend the rest of the night exchanging messages. So he set his phone down again and leaned back against the sofa, now holding the bowl up to his chest to he wouldn't spill anything. Now he could just relax for the rest of the week and count down to the 30th, when Mika would finally come over. She would also get to see his little dog Mitsu. The little 'rat', as Ruki sometimes called him, would get along with Mika straight away as long as she liked dogs. Because Mitsu was known to be a bit of a ladies man, so he liked any human female regardless of age or what they looked like. In fact that was what worried him when Mika came over - Mitsu won't leave Mika alone once he meets her, so Ruki would have competition with Mitsu was Mika's attention ... maybe he shouldn't have Mitsu brought back after all ... at least until after the Tour Finale?

NOTES:
1) Ruki's name: It's unconfirmed, but all over the web it is rumored that Ruki's real name is 'Matsumoto Takanori'. So I decided to stick with it
2) Giving phone numbers: These were left out because of course there's no need to include them in the story
3) Ruki's dinner: For those who don't know, pasta is actually one of Ruki's cooking specialties
4) Mitsu: He was modeled after seeing photos of Ruki with a little Papillon dog years ago - Mitsu is white with patches of redy-brown, which is where the name 'Mitsu' (Honey) came from
