Zack and Matt made it back to their room around midnight, Zack absolutely exhausted from the few hours of running and playing with his pack. Zack collapsed on his bed and almost fell asleep, Matt snorted and then he felt hands on his hips and Matt rolled him onto his back.
“Want something?” he asked sleepily. Matt laughed quietly, “Not if you’re gonna fall asleep on me.” He carefully pulled Zack’s shoes and pants off and coaxed him into a sitting position so he could pull his shirt off. Once he was comfortably in his boxers Zack curled up on his bed and really did fall asleep.
He woke up sometime in the night from an unremembered nightmare completely disoriented. He thought he was at his house and then he thought he was at Matt’s or Brian’s. He shook off the remnants of sleep and remembered where he was; he sat up and saw Matt’s relaxed body on the other side of the room. He got up and went over to Matt and snuggled against his back, Matt made a small sound and then turned over, “What is it puppy?” he murmured. Zack shook his head and pressed closer to him, “Bad dream.” He whispered. Matt pulled the covers down under him and he gladly climbed in bed with him.
The next morning Zack was woken when someone pounded on the door. He groaned and pressed his face into Matt’s warm shoulder and tried to go back to sleep. Matt shifted but didn’t even try to get up, not that Zack would’ve let him. The loud knocking came again, “Matt, Zack, get up.” Brian yelled. Zack looked over his shoulder at the door; all their pack mates had a key to their room, why was Brian in the hallway yelling at them?
Matt finally sat up, Zack got up too, and the two went to the door. Zack smelled Brian and someone else, someone he didn’t know. Spicy apples with a trace of Hunter. He bared his teeth when he caught the scent but quickly schooled his features when Matt opened the door. His mate hadn’t seen his reaction to the scent and now it was too late to tell him.
Brian stood in the hallway with a pretty brunette by his side. He recognized her from “Welcome Week”, the girl Brian had taken a serious liking too. She looked a little nervous, but her smile was friendly, “Hi, I’m Michelle.” She said quietly. Zack gave her an automatic smile, but his mind was elsewhere. The Hunter scent wasn’t strong on her; she could’ve picked it up just by bumping into one. Still, it was unsettling with Brian standing so close to her and Matt pretty much with his guard completely down.
“Hi, I’m Matt. That’s Zack.” Matt said with a smile more genuine than Zack’s. Brian watched the Alphas carefully, “Do you two wanna come to breakfast with us? Michelle knows a great diner on the other side of campus.” His voice was light; to anyone else it would sound like a simple invitation to hang out. Matt thought for a second and then shook his head, “You go, I’ve got homework.” He grimaced, “God when’s the last time I had to say that.”
Zack snickered and shook his head as well, “Next time. I’ve got class in an hour and a half. Did you ask Johnny and Jimmy?”
Brian nodded, “They had early classes.” He sounded relieved, not that Michelle knew that. Zack still glanced at the woman every now and then suspiciously; how did she get the Hunter scent on her clothes?
“Okay, I’ll see you guys later.” Brian said, Zack quirked an eyebrow when he reached down and took Michelle’s hand. She smiled and waved her good-bye as they started down the hallway.
Matt closed and locked the door again and then leaned against the smooth wood.
“That was unexpected.” Zack murmured. He leaned against Matt’s chest and kissed his collar bone. Matt’s arms lightly circled his waist, “Yes it was.” He said mostly to himself. Zack reached up and gently pressed his lips against Matt’s, “Come back to me.” He whispered. Matt lightly shook himself and smiled, “I can never stay away long.” He murmured.
Territory that will become Italy 145 ad Matt’s POV
He wasn’t sure why he kept coming back to this place. Every year since Brian had disappeared he had come back. At first he had tried to tell himself he was only passing through, it was the fastest way to get where he wanted to go. He was never on a time constraint though, he never had anywhere he had to be, still he came through every year.
He was still alone; he hadn’t joined any wild wolf packs or tried to change anyone else. The loneliness was killing him. He had actually ventured into several human villages over the past twelve years looking for any sort of contact with others. He had learned the hard way how dangerous that was. A long scar ran down his right arm from the burning slash of a silver blade.
He had thought he had found someone to talk to for a little while, naïve little puppy that he was, he didn’t know the Hunter until the metal ripped open his arm. He hadn’t been near many villages or towns since then. Loneliness still plagued him though. As wolf he either frightened away animals or they wanted to fight, as a human he scared away everything.
He stopped to rest under a leafy bush until the sun left its zenith. He lay with his nose between his paws and watched a young robin flutter down from the branches of the trees and snap up a juicy bug. A few ants dragged bits and pieces from another unfortunate bug back to their home. The forest was alive with birdsong and the comings and goings of all the forest creatures.
Almost as if it had a mind of its own one of his ears swiveled to the right; something large was moving through the brush. It wasn’t the soft footed progress of a bear or the quick step of a fox, but it was big and moving fast. He raised his head and listened a little more closely. The sound stopped. He waited tensely for it to start again; he wasn’t in the mood for a fight.
A lone, mournful howl echoed through the trees. A familiar sound, something he had been aching to hear for years. Without thinking he raised his own husky voice to answer Brian’s call.
Present Day Zack’s POV
“Why was he asking permission to go somewhere with her?” He asked quietly, he could tell Matt was zoning out again, lost in his timeless memories. He came back faster than Zack had thought he would, though not completely. Half of him still looked like it was in another place in time, “He wants to tell her about us.” He said distantly. Zack started, “He can’t.” he said much sharper than he intended. His tone was enough to bring all of Matt back to the present though.
“If he wants to tell her that means he intends to ask her if she wants to join our pack.” He said trying to soothe Zack’s fears. Zack shook his head hard, “No, I smelled Hunter on her.” He kissed Matt’s neck, “It wasn’t her scent, but she’s definitely been around one.” He said to relax Matt’s suddenly tense body. Matt sighed and gently knocked his head against the door, “That certainly won’t go over well with him.” He muttered. Zack nodded and sighed, “I have to get ready for class.” He said. Matt dropped his arms and Zack grabbed his stuff for the shower, “I can’t wait until we have our own bathroom again.” He grumbled.
“Me too.” Matt murmured huskily in his ear. Zack shivered involuntarily, “You still owe me an explanation.” He reminded the older wolf. Matt’s lips left a trail of fire down his neck, “Explanation for what?” he asked distractedly. Zack tried to sound indignant, “For why sex with me is second to Brian.” He ended up whimpering quietly in pleasure as Matt sucked hard on the juncture between his neck and shoulder. Matt laughed, “Tonight angel I’ll tell you whatever you want to know.” Then he let him go and Zack grabbed his towel and numbly opened the door and headed down the hall to take his shower.
The day couldn’t drag on any longer. At home he and Matt had been free to sex each other up all they wanted; now they were constrained by school schedules and their neighboring students when they were at the dorm. He didn’t really pay attention to what the lab professor was saying, he’d aced chemistry a century ago. His eyes automatically followed the movement of the professor at the front of the class, but he was miles away dreaming about that night.
He rushed in to their dorm after chemistry and then sighed, Matt had classes until two. He grumbled a few choice words and then curled up on his mate’s bed. He didn’t fall asleep as easily as he had the day before so he just ended up staring at the clothes hanging in Matt’s little closet area.
After a few minutes he sighed and sat up, his stomach rumbled hungrily. He got up and stretched a little and then made sure he had his student ID and left to go to the cafeteria.
The cafeteria, called the Atrium for some reason, was about a ten minute walk from the dorm; but stopping every ten steps to autograph something made the walk about thirty minutes. He didn’t mind though, the place wouldn’t be as crowded. The Atrium was the main cafeteria on campus; it also housed a bookstore and doubled as the Art and Journalism building. There were other eateries in select dorms and there were some pretty decent restaurants in the area of campus called “The Village” which housed the bookstores, two banks, half a dozen restaurants, and a couple little knick-knack shops.
He walked in, the place was still pretty crowded, he took a deep breath but there wasn’t a trace of Hunter in the air. There were four check out lines open, each line had four or more students in it, and the lines for food were just as long. He had a couple of choices; Chik-Fil-A, an Italian place called Sbarro, a sandwich place Block and Barrel, and his personal favorite Buckley’s Grill that served burgers, tenderloins, fish, cheese fries, and a plethora of other greasy foods.
The line for the Grill was the longest so he picked that one. The longer he was line, the more time would pass before Matt got back and they could enjoy themselves. He shuddered a little and took another deep breath to settle his nerves. He almost gagged when the sharp scent of a Hunter nearly overwhelmed him. He looked around trying to pinpoint the source but there were too many people moving around. The Hunter could already be long gone or it could be in the line for Chik-Fil-A, he couldn’t tell. He shook himself and stepped forward to place his order. He tried to act casual when he stepped to the side to wait for his order to be filled but he could feel the tension in his shoulders.
He waited about five minutes for his food trying not to look over his shoulder every five seconds but once he got the food on his tray he was on his way to the check out line and again waiting with people at his back. He managed to give the elderly cashier woman a smile as she swiped his card and then he was in the main dining area looking for a corner seat.
Luck was with him, there was a small table open near the doors where he came in that was pushed back against the wall. He would have a clear view of the entire cafeteria and a fair amount of the people coming and going. He tried to hide his nervousness but the very thought of being in a room with a Hunter that he couldn’t find was making him almost ill with worry. He ate a lot faster than he intended to and quickly slipped out of the cafeteria and hurried back to the safety of the dorm.
He never thought he would be so happy to be in the cramped confines of their dorm room, but once the door was closed and locked he leaned against the door and sighed with relief. He checked under his and Matt’s beds and knew the room was as secure as it had been when he left. He checked the clock and sighed, he still had a good half hour before Matt would be back. He stripped out of his clothes and shifted and began pacing the room.
After only a few minutes of going back and forth he hopped up on Matt’s bed and sighed. He pulled his pillow out from beneath his covers and moved it to the middle of the bed where he could lie on it and still have a decent view of the door. He sighed and stared at the door willing Matt to walk through it. He looked at the clock again; twenty minutes left and that was only if Matt came straight back to the dorm and didn’t get lunch or start talking to someone on the street.
An hour later Matt finally walked in. Zack was still in his wolf form lying on his back in the middle of the room staring at the ceiling. It had taken every ounce of his self-control to not chew the furniture or howl out his boredom. As soon as Matt was in the room he flipped over and shifted and tackled his mate.
“Zack, what the hell?” he laughed. Zack had his face buried in his neck but lifted it enough to say, “I went to the atrium; there was a Hunter in there somewhere.”
Matt stiffened but relaxed again in a second, if Zack had been injured he would’ve told his mate immediately. Zack buried his head again and sighed, his stress levels were hitting astronomical heights with the Hunters on campus. He couldn’t just call Jimmy, Johnny, and Brian back and demand they never leave their dorms again; not only would Brian be incensed because he couldn’t see his girlfriend he would come across as a paranoid and over protective mother wolf. He would lose their trust. He lifted his head again and rested his cheek against Matt’s shoulder, “This was such a stupid idea.” He sighed. Matt pulled him closer, “The pursuit of education is never stupid Zachary.” He murmured. Zack took his hand and pulled him over to his bed and lay down, Matt lay down next to him and snuggled his body closer to his until they fit together like puzzle pieces.
Brian’s POV
“Um Brian, about dinner tonight…” Michelle said as they were walking to her science class, “I told my sister that we were seeing each other and she said she’d like to meet you. Do you mind if she eats with us?” she asked shyly. Brian gave her a surprised look, “Of course not.” He said softly, Michelle’s shyness was both endearing and somewhat frustrating. Hopefully her sister would be able to shed some light on her quiet personality. He had never met anyone, other than Zack, that was so difficult to read. Matt had his days where his moods changed like the flickering shadow of a candle, but those were few and centuries in between. Johnny, sweet little wolf that he was, wore his heart on his sleeve. At first Jimmy had been confusing but he tended to be either thoughtful or spastic with his actions, depending on his behavior you could tell which it was going to be. Michelle was just…impossible.
Her brown eyes betrayed only superficial emotion; he knew there was more though; those dark depths could hold an infinite number of feelings. He just hadn’t been able to decipher them. Zack was the same way. Matt seemed to have no problem reading his mate but to Brian he was totally unpredictable; his eyes no more readable than a shiny block of green marble. He saw only the reflection of himself. Michelle gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, “Great, I’ll meet you tonight then.” She said happily. Brian flashed her a smile and, moving a little faster than a human should, pressed his lips against hers for a split second, “See you at six.” He whispered. She nodded, a bright blush flushing her cheeks and then she opened the door and disappeared into the Cooper science building.
Brian sighed, it was only three and his roommate got done with classes at two which meant he would be in the dorm ready to pester him as soon as he got back. He also didn’t want to deal with Matt or Zack’s questions. He hadn’t missed the slightly troubled and guarded look on Zack’s face that morning. He scolded himself for hiding from the Alphas instead of manning up and talking to them, but the possibility of them telling him to stay away from Michelle was a little too real. Especially with the little stunt he had pulled that morning.
Matt was extremely lenient with him, indulgent even, and he knew he wouldn’t get away with half the stuff he did if he’d been in any other pack. He would never tell a human about them, not even Michelle, without his Alphas’ permission, but he had all but told Matt that he was going to ask Michelle to join them that morning. The breakfast ploy was more of a “Meet the Parents” kind of thing; it would’ve given Michelle a chance to meet Zack and Matt and for the Alphas to get to know her. They had glitched his plans thought by denying the breakfast request. His stomach churned uneasily, he barely registered pulling open the door to the campus art museum, either Matt was going to rip him a new one or he was going to flat out tell him there wouldn’t be any new additions.
He cursed softly under his breath and headed for the ancient Greek part of the museum, his favorite area. No one ever really went to the museum unless they had a class project so the place stayed pretty quiet and the Greek and Roman area at the far end of the museum seemed to be forgotten by everyone that worked there. Being around the familiar artwork and pottery soothed him though and he sat on the bench in the corner of the room almost every chance he got. He had three hours before he was meeting Michelle and her sister at one of the restaurants on campus called Scotty’s and he really needed to think of something good to tell Matt and Zack.
