Part 7, The Present
“So it was a happy ending,” Koyama stated. “She confessed her feelings. What happened?”
“Let him get there in his own time,” YamaPi stated. “I think there’s more to this story than meets the eye.”
Tegoshi chewed on his bottom lip, his eyes unfocused for a moment while he stared into the fire. Oh yes, there was definitely more than met the eye. Even now, two weeks after it happened, he still could not believe it was over. How could it be over? It wasn’t supposed to end like that. When two people were in love it was supposed to continue forever. They were supposed to be together forever. Right? Wasn’t that how it was in most books or movies? Ah, but therein lay the problem. Most. Not all. Some ended with the main character crying over what they’d lost. He was that rare main character, crying over his loss.
“Tesshi?” Koyama worriedly spoke when the youngest remained silent. “If you don’t want to talk about it anymore you don’t have to. But if you do you know we’re here for you.”
Tegoshi blinked, and nodded. “I know. It’s strange how things can turn out. You think it’s all set, and when you turn around it smacks you in the face how fast and easily it can all fall apart.”
“But how?” Shige asked, shaking his head. “If she liked you like you liked her how did it go so bad?”
Ryo scowled. “Did she cheat on you? If she did you’re better off without her.”
Tegoshi shook his head. “No, no, no.”
“So she didn’t cheat on you, that’s good,” Koyama smiled.
Tegoshi bit at his bottom lip again. “Better if I explain, I guess.” He took a deep breath. “Things were great. I followed Pi’s advice, and we were able to spend a lot of time together, doing some fun things, and it didn’t affect work at all. It was… perfect,” he smiled.
………………………
The Near Past.
“Yuya, look!”
Tegoshi made his way to where Dani was, just a few feet further down the aisle. They’d driven to a small town outside of Tokyo, and found a few small shops and tiny restaurants they could enjoy. Right now they were in a small shop with many aisles full of tall shelves and packed tight with all kinds of things from boxes that had cheap little souvenirs to baskets of candies and much more. But the best part about the crowded little shop was how narrow the aisles were so he had to get very close to her to see what she was pointing to.
He crouched some, next to her, and saw she’d found a pretty vase with sakura flowers painted on an iridescent pearly background. He knew she loved the revered blooms, and this would definitely have caught her eye. It took some work to get it out without knocking anything over, or breaking it. The pottery was rather delicate. He finally held it up, and they both crouched there admiring it.
“Oh, it’s not that expensive,” she had tilted her head to see the price on the bottom. “I think I’ll get it.”
He shuffled back some. “No, I want to get it for you.” Pushing smoothly to his feet he held a hand out to her to help her up. “It’ll be my first gift to you.”
“First!” She rolled her eyes, grinning at him. “What about the basket of apples, and the CD, and…”
“Okay, first gift as your official boyfriend,” he amended, flushing slightly.
She pursed her lips, thinking, and then nodded. She knew that gift giving to the Japanese was a big deal. If she refused he could be very insulted. Stepping back she bowed and glanced up at him through her lashes. “Thank you, I’ll treasure it always.”
Tegoshi’s breath caught, and his heart sped up. The way she looked up at him was a little heated, and he now had thoughts of taking her home where he could spend a few moments alone with her to pull her into his arms and kiss her. Then he remembered that they were in a crowded shop, near the very back of a narrow aisle. Tegoshi cradled the vase in one arm, and caught her chin in his free hand to lift her face. Leaning down he touched his lips to hers.
She blinked, startled, and when he straightened she blushed. “I didn’t think you were so bold!” she said low.
He grinned at her, shrugging. “Neither did I, but the way you had looked at me got me all excited.” The way she blushed at his words made him want to pull her body closer to his, and kiss her again, but he didn’t.
They continued to explore the shop, and found a few other treasures they purchased. Afterwards they went to the small restaurant, which was more like a few tables under a cloth awning. She had never tried sea urchins before, and was willing to give it a taste with the stringy seaweed they served it together with. They also ordered a few other dishes, and drank green tea while eating.
Tegoshi leaned in when she held out a piece of meat, taking it between his teeth. She was right, it was quite good, but he was more taken by the way she fed him ~~ which he found rather intimate. To return the favour, and show her he enjoyed being this intimate with her, he scooped up some urchin and seaweed, and held it out to her. She hesitated, but then leaned forward while opening her mouth. Her eyes widened, and he laughed at the pleasure on her face.
They walked, hand in hand, to the other little shop, and had a great time exploring scrolls and painted decorations. It was getting dark when they drove back to the city. She lifted a CD, and saw that it had NEWS written on it. He watched her put it in. “I’ve listened to NEWS, and heard you somewhat that day at your house, but I’m unsure which voice is yours exactly.”
He nodded. Made sense. So she’d know exactly he turned the volume down on the CD so they could barely hear it, and sang along loudly. He was glad she wanted to know his voice. He could feel her eyes on him, and he flushed slightly but kept singing until he heard her laughing softly. Frowning he glanced at her. “Why are you laughing? I was trying to show you which voice is mine, but you’re laughing at me?”
She waved a hand, the Japanese way of basically saying no, and flushed. “I love your voice. It’s quite powerful, and I’m impressed,” she admitted sincerely. She’d been just watching his profile, admiring the way he looked and sounded, and then the words of the song had hit her. “Ai no Matador.”
“What?” He blinked, startled, and looked at her. That was one of the songs on their new album, Pacific.
“You chose to sing out loud to it,” she told him.
Once he realized that he’d been singing to her about a one-night stand he flamed, shutting his eyes briefly and mumbling a curse. Not the best song to sing to your girlfriend. “I’m so sorry!” he hurriedly apologized, bowing his head. “Gah, forgive me?”
She was laughing, and reached up a hand to comb his hair from his temple so she could better see his dark eyes. “Absolutely,” she told him.
They finally pulled up to her place, and he helped her carry in the purchases that were for her. “Well, I guess it’s getting late,” he said though he didn’t want to leave yet. He wanted a few more moments alone with her.
Dani went up to him, and took his hand in hers. “Not yet. I know we spent all day together, but it went by so fast, and we were always around others. Could you stay for just a little longer?”
Those pretty blue-purple eyes stared up at him from beneath long dark lashes, and he knew he couldn’t say no. He didn’t want to anyway. He wanted to sit with her and just watch her. A smile curled his lips, and Tegoshi reached up to push that recalcitrant lock of hair back from her cheek. “A little longer,” he told her.
He followed her to the kotatsu, but she didn’t sit across from him. Dani sat beside him, and drew his arm around her so she could rest her head on his shoulder. “I’m being bold, but I hope it’s okay. All day I wanted to get this close to you.” She peered up at him. “I like the way you smell, Yuya, and when we’re this close I can close my eyes and I feel… safe.”
Tegoshi’s heart pounded. He drew her closer, shutting his eyes and nuzzling he hair. “The things you say,” he whispered, but he smiled in pleasure. His other hand lifted to her hair, stroking the soft locks. “I wanted to get close like this all day too,” he admitted.
Dani had been inhaling the crisp and cool scent of his cologne, and the underlying warmth of the man himself, her eyes shut so she wouldn’t be distracted by anything else but the sound of his voice, and the smell of him. But at his admission she shifted slightly, and touched his smooth jaw with her fingertips. When he glanced down at her she kept her gaze on his, and lifted her face until her lips pressed lightly onto his. His eyes dilated, but he never looked away.
He had sincerity in his eyes, and a heat that made her heart race and her breathing hitch in her throat. More boldly she lightly parted her lips to capture his bottom one between them, and as the tip of her tongue caressed that lip her lashes fell to partially cover her eyes. She wanted to know the taste of him, to know the taste of his true kiss.
Tegoshi made a small sound in the back of his throat, tightened his hold on her as his other hand caught her shoulder, and turned her more into him. His eyes fell shut, and he shifted slightly so he could kiss her as she was asking him to. His mouth slanted over hers, his tongue touching hers, and now it was she who was making small sounds of pleasure. Those sounds excited him. The feel of her hand sliding around to his back, and her fingers pressing into him to keep him close also excited him. That one kiss turned to several, and he knew it was time to leave when he lifted his head, and found he’d pressed her back into the tatami, and was leaning over her.
“I should go,” he sat back, and then stood. He didn’t want to move too fast. He wanted them to slowly experience everything that a new relationship could, and not rush into everything all at once. When he got to the door and put his shoes on she was behind him, and he faced her. Her lips were kiss swollen, and still slightly moist. He almost groaned out loud. Instead he kissed her softly. “I have to work tomorrow, but I’ll call you during break.”
“Drive home safe,” she whispered.
…………………
The Present
Tegoshi hadn’t detailed the make-out session, that was private and not to be shared. “On my days off we drove to small towns and went into little shops and restaurants. If the town had something else of interest we went to see it.”
“That’s kind of cool,” Koyama nodded. “That would make a great date!”
“Wait! Wait!” Ryo held up a hand, halting the conversation before it could continue. He peered at Tegoshi seriously. “You kissed her in public?”
Tegoshi flushed. “In that aisle. No one could see us.”
“Still, that was pretty bold,” Ryo stated with a shake of his head. “I never would have pegged you for the type to be so bold.”
“He says he wants to be God in interviews,” Masuda snorted.
YamaPi chuckled. “Ryo will boldly say whatever he wants, but not kiss a girl in a quiet store aisle where no one can see them.”
“Would you?” shot back the Osakan vocalist.
“Ryo-Chan speaking his mind no matter what is a Kansai trait,” Koyama spoke up.
YamaPi had been meeting Ryo’s gaze, one of his brows raised quizzically at the challenge in his friend’s retort. “I would.”
“You would not!” Ryo scoffed.
“I have,” YamaPi calmly replied. “One time I was dating this girl, and we were in this store. She was trying on these hats, and looked so cute in one of them that I had to kiss her. So I did.”
“You did not!”
“I did! And got caught by her mother who we didn’t know was in there getting a birthday gift for someone.” YamaPi stated with a shrug. “Got a call later that she couldn’t see me anymore because I was too bold.”
“No shit?” Ryo snorted, but he was grinning.
Tegoshi was chuckling softly at the by-play going on. “Well, I didn’t think anything of kissing her. It was just the way she was looking up at me that just made my heart beat faster. She loves sakura flowers. When I’d find something with sakura flowers on it I’d always think of her, and I would often show up with some little present of something I found that had them on it. She also started to get these dishes for me for when I went over. She said when I was there it was special time, and she didn’t want me to use the normal everyday dishes so one day she got me a cup that she said was just for me to use. Well, later there were also other dishes for me alone to use.”
“That’s cute,” Shige had been putting more wood on the fire. “So if she invited you over for dinner she’d set the table with your own special dishes.”
Tegoshi nodded. “She wanted to learn to make Japanese food so one time we were in this little book store in some town, and she found this recipe book. Somehow the cover said it was written in Japanese and English, but after we got home and she was looking at it she saw it was only in Japanese. Which was a problem because she’s still learning to write it so she wrapped it and gave it to my mother the first time my family invited her to dinner as my girlfriend.”
“Oh, how did that go?” Masuda wondered.
“Well, she knows Tesshi’s mom,” Ryo reminded.
“But this was different,” Masuda declared, shaking his head. “She wasn’t just his mom’s teacher now, she was the woman Tesshi was kissing in a store!”
Tegoshi flushed, but nodded. “It was strange for Dani and my mom. Then I caught my mom questioning Dani about her decision to be together with me.”
“Oh!” The others all chorused together. “And?”
