How could her first week be so freaking hectic? Scarlett had departed the next day and returned to L.A. She spent two days there with her mother, packing and enjoying her last days at home. She had just gotten back to the flat to find it empty. She laughed. After four days of travel, two there and two back, on a cramped airplane, and two days with her mom, it’s ironic that she came home to an empty house.
Home. She chuckled, now that was going be hard to fully accept. Tired and sore, Scarlett flopped backwards onto her bed. She growled. God it was uncomfortable! She vowed to get a new one tomorrow. And an alarm clock….and some new pillows. She sighed and thought, ‘Might as well make a list of everything the house needs.’
Scarlett dug through her carry-on and pulled out a notebook and a pen and started. She had checked the garage and didn’t see a car. Top of the list, she wrote “Transportation”. She remembered the pantry being almost bare and wrote below that “Basic Groceries”. Below that she wrote, “White Bath Towels.” She made a separate column and labeled it, “Personal”. She started listing mattress, pillows, comforter, curtains, decorations, bookcase, desk, furniture, alarm clock, etc.
She wondered if the guys needed anything for the house. She shrugged, deciding to ask them later. Rather bored, Scarlett decided to venture through the house and explore. Starting at the back of the hall, she discovered a bathroom to the left, and the laundry room to the right. Curious as to whose room was where, she opened to door right next to hers and peered around. Lots of blues and mahogany furniture, a red-brown comforter was to only thing odd about the room but it somehow fit. Other decorations were a bookshelf of Horror dvds, the bed had belts covering it, a lion plushie sat in front of the pillows, and a tall white mirror stood in the corner. She quirked an eyebrow; too cutesy for Yu or Strify.
‘Must be Kiro’s room then.’ She shut the door and decided to look at the other two later. Scarlett walked to the living room and examined the dvds. Skimming the many rows, one caught her eye. She smiled and pulled The Nightmare Before Christmas off the shelf and popped it into the dvd player. She settled into the comfy futon and turned the volume up. She sang with all the song and quoted every line.
Scarlett was happily singing along with Jack at the town meeting when the front door opened. Scarlett stopped singing as Strify appeared first and stood staring at the t.v. When Jack began to sing about Sandy Claws, Strify turned to Scarlett and sang along;
“Everyone, please now, not so fast. There's something here that you don't quite grasp,” he clinched his fist and turned to Kiro and Yu, who were watching, amused in the doorway, “Well, I may as well give them what they want.”
The singer began to twirl and slink around the coffee table, “And the best, I must confess, I have saved for the last. For the ruler of this Christmas land is a fearsome king with a deep mighty voice.” He stopped in front of Scarlett and tapped her on the nose, causing her to giggle, saying, “Least that's what I've come to understand.”
Strify took off again around the living room, and Scarlett joined in from the futon, “And I've also heard it told that he's something to behold. Like a lobster, huge and red! Scarlett began swaying as Strify pranced around the couch. “And sets out to slay with his rain gear on, carting bulging sacks with his big great arms! That is, so I've heard it said,” Scarlett jumped up and ran to the loveseat, and began to dance around it.
“And on a dark, cold night, under full moonlight, he flies into a fog, like a vulture in the sky!” Both Strify and Scarlett posed with arms stretched to the skies. They both slowly came together on either side of the table, looking deeply at the other, “And they call him Sandy Claws.” Both made a scary, psychotic grin and made claws with their hands. They both laughed, falling back on the futon, Kiro and Yu chuckled as they both entered the room and lounged on the couch. She turned the movie down and turned to the others, smiling.
“That was very entertaining. I’d love to see you and Strify do a musical together,” Kiro said, as he eyed the two. Scarlett blushed, replying, “I use to do that. Musicals and singing. But I gave that up.” Strify turned, surprise written on his face, and stared at the girl in disbelief, “You have a good voice, why did you stop singing?”
She looked away as sadness washed over her. Now would be a good time to tell them the truth. Silence ensued, till finally she replied, “It’s complicated.” A sympathy smile graced the singers face, as he leaned in and gave her a brief hug. “It’s okay. I shouldn’t have asked.”
“It’s okay. It just……part of my past that I try not to think about,” she responded with a sad smile. The others continued to stare at her in silence. After a few minutes, Scarlett cleared her throat, “So whose up for dinner? Let’s go out and grab something. My treat.”
Kiro grinned, and bounced giddily, “I’m going to go get ready.” As he ran from the room, Scarlett and the others couldn’t help but laugh at the silly bassist. Yu stood and looked at the two, saying, “I’m going to go call Romeo and freshen up. So whenever you’re ready to go just let me know.” He smiled sweetly at Scarlett, causing her to blush, turning from the room and disappearing down the hall. She turned to Strify, who rose from the futon, and faced her. “Hey. I started a list earlier for stuff for the house. Is there anything you guys want or need?”
He shook his head, “No I don’t think so. But you’ll have to ask the others. They might want junk food and that would be about it.” They laughed, as she responded, “Okay. Well let’s go get ready.” He walked ahead of her and turned to the first door on the right, across from hers. Once he was inside, she looked down the hall at the last unopened door. That was Yu’s room then. As his door started to open, she ripped hers open and flew inside. Last thing she needed was he to catch her staring at him. Sighing, she walked to her bags and began rummaging for something to wear out.

The next morning, after the guys had left, Scarlett called a cab to go into town to do her shopping. At dinner, she had asked Kiro and Yu if they needed anything. Just as Strify said, they both wanted junk food. She had them make a list of what they wanted and promised she’d do what she could. Before she had left the house, she checked her online balance, though she didn’t need to. Scarlett had inherited a good chunk of money from her mother’s grandma when she passed away. Her grandma had invested in many different kinds of stock over the many years of her life, causing her to have close to seventy million dollars. Most of which was left to Scarlett and her mother, but couldn’t get it till her sixteenth birthday. The inheritance paid for her college and her travel expenses.
Her mother could quit her job and just live for herself, but she loves people too much. So, she decided to keep working but just part time, and whatever money she made she would send to a different charity every month.
The first place she needed to go to was a car dealer ship. As she sat in the back of the cab, she tried to figure out what kind of cars they needed. Probably an SUV just for the room, and a smaller car for herself. A Mercury car dealership came into view and she directed the driver to drop her off there.
After an hour of car shopping, she drove off the lot in a silver 2002 Mercury Cougar, with the works. Luckily, the dealership had a GPS that she could buy; she could find stores around the strange city. She found a furniture store, and bought a mattress and a new bedroom set that would be delivered later that day. On the way to a décor store, she happened to come across another dealership, Audi this time. She pulled in and spent forty minutes before she found black 2007 Audi Q7 SUV, again with the works. She paid to have them deliver it to the house that day.
She spent the next three hours doing décor shopping for her room and her own towels. Afterwards, she found the nearest T-Mobile store and got new phones and plans for them all, Luminor and Shin included. She also bought two extra phones, for emergencies and was going to put them in the cars. She had them program her number into all the phones. The guys could do the others later.
Around 3 o’clock she decided to start grocery shopping and found the nearest store. Once inside she started walking up and down isles, grabbing what she thought they needed. She eventually had to grab a second buggy to put stuff in. She was looking at different cereals, and finally decided on a few. As she turned to put them in the buggy, she ran into a solid object, causing her to fall and send the boxes flying.
She quickly looked up see a small girl about her age, lying on the floor opposite her. Scarlett jumped up and ran the other girl, asking, “Are you okay?” She extended a helping hand. The girl looked away, blushing. She mumbled, “I’m fine,” as she reached and accepted the hand up.
Once the girl was up, Scarlett got a better look at her. She was a few inches shorter, about 5’5” and was very slim. She had long brown hair, which seemed kind of limp and lifeless at the moment. She had dark circles under her eyes and she looked even paler than Scarlett, if that were possible. The girl’s clothes looked better, though they weren’t one hundred percent clean. She was wearing black skinny tripp pants that had three strips around the calf, red stitching, zippers on the pockets, and chains that clipped onto the front to D-rings and crossed on the back. She also wore a zip-up black hoodie with Jack Skellington on the front and down the sides of the arms, along with red and black Mary Jane shoes with a teddy bear face, and a skull and eyeball pattern.
She also had five silver rings and jelly rings peeking out beneath the ends of her long sleeves. Her eyes were lined in black with faded teal eyeshadow that surrounded a lovely shade of blue/green eyes.
Scarlett smiled gently, extending her hand, and said, “I’m Scarlett.”
“Olivia.”
“It’s nice to meet you.” Olivia nodded, looking uncomfortable.
“Are you from here? I just moved here last week.”
“Oh. I’ve just recently arrived here as well. My sister and I were living in Sweden with our grandmother, but she passed away recently. And, well, here I am.”
Scarlett nodded, “Well, since we’re both new to this country do you, perhaps, want to be friends?”
Olivia smiled, “Okay.”
Scarlett returned the smile, “I’ve got a little bit more to get. Do you want to walk with me and we can hang out for bit then I can take you home.” The word home made a sad expression cross the girls face, but she nodded and replied, “Yeah, sure.” Olivia turned to grab some of the boxes of cereal on the ground and Scarlett gasped. Olivia turned to her, curious. The red-head pointed at the girl’s shoulder, “I ripped your hoodie. I’m sorry. I can fix it though! I have a mini sewing kit in my purse.”
The darker girl grasped her jacket to see that indeed she did have a hole. She just shrugged and grabbed one of Scarlett’s shopping carts. She gave the brunette a curious glance, but continued to grab her last items. Once everything was rung up and paid for, the two loaded it all into the back of her Cougar and drove to the nearest park. They walked to a bench not far from the car, and Scarlett whipped out her little kit, as Olivia took off her hoodie. The quiet girl was wearing a ‘Devil May Cry’ shirt, jelly bracelets, and a red double wrap bracelet with a skull charm.
As she threaded her needle, she asked, “So tell me about yourself. How old are you?”
“Nineteen. You?”
“Seventeen.”
“Do you live with your parents?” Olivia inquired. Scarlett shook her head, “No I just moved here for a job. My mom lives in L.A.” The older girl nodded, “What’s your full name?”
“Scarlett Victoria Riddle. What’s yours?”
“Olivia Blossom Pattinson.”
The red-head nodded, “That’s pretty. You said you were from Sweden. Did you live there your whole life?”
She shook her head, “No. We lived in the U.S. for the majority of our lives. But had to move a few years ago.”
“Ah, okay. Well, I moved here just a week ago. I lived in the U.S. my whole life. What about a favorite color?”
Olivia smiled, “I have a lot of them. White, red, silver, grey, turquoise, black, green, purple, dark purple, turquoise green, blue, dark blue, midnight blue, aqua, and teal.” Scarlett looked at the other girl in shock.
The darker girl giggled, “What?” She shook her head, “Nothing. I just didn’t expect that many colors.” Scarlett laughed, “Well, I don’t have that many but mine are purple, black, lime green, red, silver, blue, and white.” The older girl smiled and crossed her legs under her.
Scarlett started stitching, and continued, “Do you have any siblings?” Olivia nodded, “One sister, a fraternal twin, and a possible other sister. My mom never confirmed that she had given her up for adoption. What about you?”
Scarlett shook her head, “No. I’m an only child. My mom was raped in college and I was conceived. She won’t tell me who my father is. It was someone she went to school with. But it doesn’t bother me much.”
“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that.”
The red-head just shrugged, “It’s fine I’ve learned to just forget about it. What about your parents?”
There were a few moments of silence before she answered, “Same thing happened to my mom. She was raped when my sister and I were about eight. He killed her.” Scarlett looked up and saw sadness written on the girl’s face. She reached over and pulled her into a tight hug. “I’m sorry.”
They sat like that for a few minutes, till Olivia cleared her throat and sat back. Scarlett smiled sympathetically at the girl, then continued stitching, “What about your dad?” Olivia let out a ‘hmph,’ causing Scarlett to look up curious. “Him. He left us right after mom was killed. He just left without a word. We moved into a foster home. But that didn’t really last. So my aunt, one of mom’s sisters, took us in till we were about seventeen, then we went to live with our grandma in Sweden.”
“Do you know where he is?”
She scoffed, “No. Neither one of us have heard anything out of him. He just disappeared. He blamed Winter and I for our mother’s death. It wasn’t maybe a month after it happened, we came home from school and he had left a note saying he couldn’t do it anymore and that he was leaving. Hard to believe it’s been eleven years since I’ve seen my father.”
“So where are you and your sister living right now? Do you have a friend here in Germany?” Olivia looked away, ashamed. “No.” Scarlett paused on her last few stitches. “If you aren’t staying with a friend, then where…..” She trailed off. Olivia’s head dropped, and she started twisting her hands.
“Well…..we’ve been……..” she sighed, “We’ve been staying in a homeless shelter for about a week. We weren’t planning on it taking this long to find jobs.” She sniffled and wiped her nose with the back of her hand, “We both thought that at least one of us would have a job by now. So we could start saving to find us a place. But we just walk into a place and managers just look at us and say they’re not hiring.”
Scarlett reached over again and pulled the smaller girl to her and began to run her hair, trying to soothe her. Olivia sniffled again, “I’m trying to get things right in my life and I can’t even get a starting step. It’s so discouraging.” The red-head kept trying to calm the girl down, “It’s going to be okay. It’ll all work out somehow.”
“I just want to take care of my sister. I just want her to be safe and not have to worry.”
They sat in silence for what seemed like eternity, except for Olivia’s sniffles, till a brilliant idea came to Scarlett. “Hey. I know what you could do. I could put you guys up in a hotel till you get things settled. Would that be okay?” Olivia shook her head, “I couldn’t ask you to do that for us. It doesn’t seem right.”
Scarlett just smiled, “Don’t worry about. You’re a friend.” Olivia protested for a few more minutes till she finally gave in and accepted the offer, as Scarlett knotted the last stitch and snipped the rest of the string. She handed it back, and they walked to the car and searched for hotels on her GPS. They finally found one that seemed perfect, went to pick up Winter. Once they had her, they made their way to the hotel which was in the middle of the city so they could get to any store they wanted.
She got them a very nice room, with two beds and the works. Pool, air conditioning, breakfast, a gym, a sauna, room service, everything. She had them put everyone thing on one bill that she would be paying later. Scarlett walked back to the sisters, handing each a room key, and said, “Everything is taken care of.” She beamed at the two, then another idea popped into her head, “Oh.” She dug around in her bag and pulled out two of the cell phones she had bought earlier. “If you ever need anything just give me a call. My number is already in them.”
Olivia looked on the verge of tears, as she choked out, “T-thank you,” and hugged Scarlett very tightly. She returned the hug and rubbed the emotional girls back. “You’re welcome.” As they let go, Scarlett gave the girls a sweet smile, “Call me whenever you want to talk. If I don’t answer right away, I’ll call you back. Promise.” The girls nodded, and gave her one last hug, as she slipped an envelope into Olivia’s hoodie.
She smiled as she walked to her car. She set the GPS for home and drove happily singing. Once home, she found a message on the answering machine. It was from Kiro saying that they were going to be home late and that they were getting a lot done in the studio. She smiled and pulled everything into the house and began to put the food up first and set something out to make for dinner.
Soon after, a knock sounded from the front door. She opened it to find people from the furniture company there. They moved all the old furniture out into a building behind the house. Once her room was setup, she tipped them and thanked them. She moved all her décor purchases on to her new bed and skipped to the kitchen to start dinner. She was about to put the chicken in the oven when the second knock of the night sounded. She went to answer it and saw the man from the Audi dealership with a set of keys in his hand. She took them and thanked him as he left.
She started the rice and checked the chicken, once satisfied she went and started decorating her room. She had just about everything in place when she skipped back to the kitchen to finish dinner. During the last few minutes she went to grab the cell phones and set them on the counter for the guys to see when they got home. She dialed the studio’s number and Strify answered. She asked him to bring Shin and Luminor along for dinner. After a few minutes of chatting, they hung up and she went to put dinner on the table.
She went back to her room and finished decorating. Once everything was in its place, she skipped back to the living room, put in Edward Scissorhands, and settled into the futon to wait for the guys to arrive. She knew that this was going to be an interesting night.
