I sat there almost impatiently as he worked, wanting to rip his headphones off and listen to what he had done. But I sat there, studying Michael. This is how he worked. “About time I got your attention, you must have been doing some serious thinking. I got your track done. Here it is…” Michael said pressing play on the computer. The track had a number of tracks in it, but it was made mostly of strings. It was a faster paced song, clearly pop. I nodded in approval.
“About 8 measures into the song is when you start singing…”
“Okay, eight measure from the low bass bring in or the bring in is a part of the eight measures?” I asked.
“The bring in acts as a measure so yes to the latter.” Michael said looking at me. Michael got up and fiddled around with some controls and knobs then looked at me.
“Well she’s ready for you…” Michael said pointing his head toward the mic room. I looked and shook my head.
“I ain’t going in there, I’ll make a fool out of myself.” I said flat out refusing, I was nervous enough already with having to stand in front of a mic and sing.
“Come on Crys, don’t be chicken, the mic won’t bite you…”
“I’ll screw up by being too flat or too sharp or completely missing the note all-together. Besides, I’ve never done this before.”
“Crys, if you miss a note we can go back and re-record that section again, and if you’re flat or sharp then I can fix that too…” Michael said, pointing to certain knobs and controls on the soundboard. I smirked.
“Is there a button on there to erase the butterflies in my tummy?” I asked looking at Michael, sounding like a little kid. He leaned over and kissed me, then gave my a playful smack on the booty.
“Nope, you’re on your own with that…now get in there, I’ll be there to help you in a little bit.” Michael said fiddling with a few more knobs. I walked into the mic room and once the door shut it was virtually like entering an airtight room. No sound escaped. I looked at the mic and imagined all the songs Michael had sang into it. There was a filter in front of it, my guess is so that the hard consonants don’t cause a loud splatter in the music. With the lyrics in hand, I patiently waited for Michael to adjust the mic and give me some kind of stand to place my lyrics on so I could see them. A few moment later, Michael came in and helped adjust the mic stand then he hooked a rod onto the mic stand with a clip on the end of it. I handed him the paper with the lyrics on it and he clipped it into the clip.
“Okay, you’re set, one word of advice, make sure that you enunciate your words clearly, I would keep your lips about in inch away from the screen, you get better sound that way in my opinion.” Michael said looking at me. His lips crashed upon mine. He dislodged.
“If you need anything just say so, I’ll be through that glass, you’ll be able to see me, I’ll be able to see you…” Michael trailed off, smoothing his lips together as if trying to think of something else. “You don’t need to warm up or anything, do you?” I shrugged.
“Well you’re the great vocalist, you tell me.” I said, almost in a smart tone. Michael raised an eyebrow in a mocking way then he shook his head.
“Nah, I think you’re fine. I’ll be watching you, okay?” Michael said, noticing that I was shaking in nerves. He gave me a hug. “It will be okay, you’ll nail it okay?” I nodded, feeling a little bit better. Michael walked out and sat in front of the soundboard. I put the headphones on, and put my lips an inch away from the screen, feeling like I was sealing my fate.
