~~Darren Hayes, Crash and Burn~~
Savage Desire – pt 7
A shutter sounded, firing rapidly.
“No! No pictures! NO news people! I told you!” Darren growled at Officer Patterson.
“It’s the crime scene photographer. He has to get pictures. Evidence.”
Darren sagged in his arms, muttering and whimpering as he watched the cold shots being taken.
“Can’t you tell him to hurry, for God’s sake? Danny could be dying!” Darren pleaded.
The man with the camera nodded.
The arms holding Darren let go, and he ran to Daniel, pulling on the Velcro straps of the heavy flack vest as he went. He pulled it off as he halted in front of Daniel, almost afraid to touch the bruised and battered form. Afraid of hurting him worse.
“Danny…” he whispered as he took his shirt off. Wrapped it around the thin waist before pressing his fingers to the wound on Daniel’s throat.
‘I don’t see bubbles. That’s , ri, right? No spurting.’ He grimaced. Daniel reeked of beer and sex. His hair was plastered to his head. ‘Damned animals!’
“Danny… speak to me Danny, please…” He carefully slid his thumb under the blindfold, and pushed it up and over the back of Daniel’s head.
He heard the ambulance then. Thank God the Sergeant had thought to have it standing by.
“I’m here, Danny. You’re going to be okay.” Darren whispered as he gently placed his lips on Daniel’s bruised ones.
Daniel’s eyelids fluttered, but didn’t open. Darren leaned in. Thought he heard Daniel trying to speak, but it seemed to be only soft moans.
Sergeant Byers appeared with the key for the cuffs, and Darren grimaced at the sight of the blood running down Daniel’s arms from his raw, bleeding wrists. Officer Patterson put his arms around Daniel from behind, and lifted him carefully so the Sergeant could unlock the cuffs.
Darren kept his hand pressed against the neck wound, somewhat staunching the flow of blood.
As the second cuff was released, Darren staggered a bit as Daniel’s weight shifted forward. Then he and Patterson were easing Daniel to the floor as the paramedics rushed in with their supplies and stretcher.
Darren shifted quietly to the side as they laid out their equipment. Watched as they took Daniel’s pulse, checked his eye reactions, and took his blood pressure. He felt like he was in a TV show as they radioed the hospital, but Daniel’s cold form reminded him it was real.
The female paramedic smiled at him, and gently moved his hand, then quickly checked the wound before placing a bandage over it.
“It’s superficial. Bleeds worse than it is,” she explained before starting an IV solution.
Darren nodded, started to wipe his hand on his jeans.
“Wait.”
She handed him a hand wipe. “Safer all around.” She smiled again, as her partner called “Ready to transport.”
An auburn-haired angel of mercy, he was sure. He watched as they shifted Daniel to the stretcher, covered his body with a sheet, and then stood as they popped it up.
“I’m coming with you.”
She smiled again, and nodded. “That’ll be fine, Mr. Hayes.”
Her hazel eyes smiled too, as she returned to collecting their equipment. Then they all headed out to the ambulance.
In the ambulance, she pointed out a seat between the driver and Daniel’s head.
He sat down and watched as they continued taking vitals, cleaning wounds and bandaging Daniel’s wrists.
“How did you know me, Miss?”
“Sara Jenkins. I know who you are. I was so worried when I heard the news this morning. And I was quite thrilled when I saw you with the officers. I’d hoped it meant you’d found Daniel. He’s lucky you found him so quickly.”
“How—how do you think he’s doing?”
“His body temperature is a bit low, and he’s dehydrated.”
“They raped him. I hope they throw the book at that bastard! I’d like to make him hurt.”
“That energy will be better spent helping your partner.”
Darren bit his lip. “You’re right, I suppose… but still…”
They arrived at the hospital then, and conversation ceased at the stretcher was rushed into the hospital.
Darren hurried behind them, but Sara stopped him as interns and nurses took the stretcher into an examination room.
“You can’t go in there right now.”
“But—what if he wakes—?”
“They know you’re here. But they are going to examine him, and do the rape kit…. They’ll be careful, but if he’s in pain, you’d only get in the way. Come on, I’ll take you to registration so you can get the paperwork finished while they’re working.”
Daniel woke screaming.
“It’s all right, Mr. Jones, you’re in the hospital. We’re just going to examine you. Please relax.”
Light blinded painfulstabstabbing like needles into eyes that had seen only darkness for so long.
‘How many hours?’
A confusion of voices. Hands holding, prodding, pressing against his body.
‘Oh, God… how many now?’
He began to thrash weakly.
“Mr. Jones. Listen to me. You need to calm down.”
His feet were in some type of stirrups. His legs bent at the knee, and he felt something hard deep inside him.
“No!! God, no!! No more! Please! Darren!!!!!”
He fought the hands again.
“Orderly, grab him! Hold him, before he hurts himself! Nurse! Sedative, now!”
Bodies weighted him as tears ran down his face and darkness claimed him again.
Darren looked up from the paperwork. “Danny!” He hissed softly, threw the clipboard on the floor and headed back toward the emergency room.
Sara stopped him.
“Mr. Hayes, I promise you. The doctor will come for you as soon as you’re able to see him.”
“But they’re hurting him.”
“No, Mr. Ha—”
“He called me! They’re hurting him!”
“Mr. Hayes… Darren!”
He stopped fighting her, and looked at her.
“They are not trying to hurt him. But after what he’s been through, the rape evidence procedure may have him confused. He’s probably not fully aware yet that he’s free.”
“Then I should be there!”
“They won’t let you in right now. And you don’t want to get barred for making a scene, do you?”
“They’d do that?”
“They could. Now please, Darren. Sit down and finish the paperwork.”
Consciousness. A now dreaded state. But different this time. He didn’t feel the blindfold, but hesitated to open his eyes, remembering the promise of death all too clearly.
Instead, he turned to his other senses. Firmness. Not cold cement, but firm. A light something covering his body. His arms weren’t behind his back. A warm hand held his left one. And fingers brushed his forehead.
He shuddered involuntarily, remembering the last time fingers had brushed his temple, yet these seemed different. Almost… familiar.
A lone tear broke free of closed lids. Moving slowly. Then gravity grabbed it, and he felt it run down the side of his face, and down his neck.
He began to shake.
Suddenly there was a smell. Coming closer. Not the smell of him, or beer, or sex, but a memory. Of better times. Of friendship… companionship… love…
He began to sob as arms he thought hnevenever feel again, wrapped around his trembling body.
“It’s going to be okay, Danny. You’re safe now. He can’t hurt you ever again.”
He couldn’t open his eyes then, as the pain and relief poured out.
Darren reassured the trembling guitarist as he moved to sit on the bed beside him. Hold him. Glad that he could. He’d been so afraid that Daniel would push him away, that he wouldn’t want to be touched.
He stroked the back of Daniel’s head with his fingers; grateful the nurses had at least cleaned him enough to remove the beer stench. Daniel had been through enough without that to remind him of what had happened. Darren rocked him gently. Murmured softly.
“H-how…? Wh-when?”
“The Embarcadero Street Team spotted your car. About three hours ago. I’m so proud, Danny. We have the most wonderful fans.” Darren blinked his eyes rapidly for a moment; not wanting to cry while Daniel was in such a fragile state.
Leonie, Ben, and Lee waved from the hallway.
“Hey,” he started softly. Pulled his head back a bit to look down at Daniel. The top of his head, anyway, because he was still clinging to Darren. “Leo, Ben, and Lee are here. Feel up to seeing them?”
Daniel buried his face in Darren’s shoulder. “They can come in, but I don’t want to look at them. I’m so ashamed, Darren.”
Darren held him tighter, disturbed by the pain in Daniel’s whispered words.
He nodded to the others. Felt Daniel try to burrow even closer.
“He—ah—he’s not quite up to this yet.”
Darren didn’t miss the way Daniel flinched when Leonie reached around him to hug Daniel.
“We were so worried, Daniel. The doctors are going to keep you twenty-four hours for observation and a few tests. I’ve arranged for Darren to be able to stay with you.”
“Th—thank you, Leo.” Daniel’s whisper was muffled by Darren’s shoulder.
Leonie gave him another squeeze, and kissed the top of his head. “Be here to pick you up tomorrow afternoon.”
She stepped back, and Lee moved up to crush Daniel and Darren in a hug.
“We’re here for you, Dan. You know we are.”
Darren felt Daniel swallow, before he silently nodded his head.
“We’ll leave you to get some rest now. See you tomorrow.”
The others left then, and silence slowly filled the room. Darren continued stroking the back of Daniel’s head. Listening to his slightly harsh breathing.
He began rubbing small, reassuring circles on the small of Daniel’s back. Felt the tremors slowly cease.
“Ready to get some rest?”
Daniel sat up slowly, his emerald eyes locking with Darren’s sapphires.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Darren didn’t like the wild glint in Daniel’s eyes.
Slowly Daniel shook his head, shifted uneasily on the bed, and then lay back down.
Darren chewed his lip a bit. The psychiatrist he’d talked to in the hallway, had told him it would be best if Daniel talked about it, but that he would have to do it willingly. How to get him to do that?
Carefully picking up Daniel’s hand again, Darren stroked his palm a bit, staring at the bandages that now hid the torn flesh of Daniel’s wrists.
“Danny… I can’t pretend to know how you feel…. I—you probably know I felt some of what you went through,” his eyes lifted to Daniel’s a moment. He watched him swallow, then close his eyes and nod. “You have no reason to be ashamed, Danny. Anything you did at the hands of that madman, you did to survive…. I know that… And I thank God that you did survive.”
He’d been talking quietly up to that point, but now he let his emotions fill his voice. “I was so proud of you when you smashed the
bastard’s face with your hard head!”
Daniel’s eyes flew open, and he stared at Darren, surprise and shock in his gaze.
“Well, I was!” He smiled, and chuckled a bit gleefully.
A slow smile pulled at the ends of Daniel’s lips, as his free hand went to his throat.
“It felt damn good, I’ll tell you that. I just wish I could’ve gotten my hands on him. I wanted to hurt him, Darren. I—I wanted to kill him, for what he did to me…. And I was so scared… that’s what I hated most… that I was so fucking scared…. And—and my
body… my goddamned body… I couldn’t control anything… I didn’t want that, Darren, I didn’t…”
Darren pulled him into another embrace, as he broke down again.
“I’m supposed to be a man, Darren,” he sobbed. “And I fucking cried like a baby…. Just like now…”
“That’s okay, Danny. Let it all out…. You had good reason to be scared. I’m no less proud of you. That just makes me even more proud of you.” Darren put all of his pride in his voice. “That you could overcome your fears and retaliate…”
Daniel’s spasms gradually eased. Slowly his arms moved around Darren, and he began to hug him back.
“Thank you, Darren…. I—I was afraid you might be… find me… repulsive.”
Darren leaned back a bit. Slowly, gently pushed Daniel up. Wanted so much to kiss away his fears right then… Simply stared at Daniel, expressing with his eyes how he felt.
He sensed Daniel’s hesitation. Watched him fight with himself. Waited as he slowly, apprehensively leaned in toward his lips.
It took all Darren’s resolve to sit quietly. Unchanged in position. Letting his feelings express themselves through his gaze. Daniel had to do this himself. He had faith that Daniel could. That he would succeed. But he had to know that he could get beyond
what that man had done. What had happened to him. And he had to do it on his own.
Gradually their lips met. Darren stifled the moan he felt deep inside.
Daniel backed away just a slowly. His eyes searching Darren’s. Darren doing his best to show his pride and happiness.
A small smile on Daniel’s lips. Then he yawned, and blushed.
“Lay with me, please, Darren.”
Darren smiled. “Do you think you’ll be okay? I’ll have to lay right beside you. This bed is pretty small.”
“I—I want you to. I—I need you to, Darren. I—I need… I need… someone to touch me… without hurting me.”
Nodding understandingly, Darren slid in beside Daniel, spooning in closely to his side, putting his arm protectively around Daniel’s chest.
Daniel’s breath caught as Darren’s arm slid around him. And he trembled for a few moments.
Darren lightly caressed Daniel’s arm in a way he hoped would sooth him. A short time later, Daniel’s eyelids began to droop, and his breathing became progressively smoother. Normal.
He placed a light kiss on Daniel’s shoulder when he was certain he was asleep. Then sleep claimed him as well.
