"Why do you hate me?"
Carrie froze where she stood hunched over, raiding the fridge for something to drink. "Who said I hate you?" she finally replied after a moment.
"Isn't it obvious?" Ashley asked.
Carrie sighed as she grabbed a root beer out of the fridge before closing the door shut.
"So?"
"Are you serious?" Carrie raised an eyebrow. "I mean, you accuse me of being dumb, but if you can't see why I wouldn't exactly be your biggest fan then maybe you should hold off on the dumb blonde jokes from now on."
"I just feel like you don't trust me," Ashley shrugged, feigning innocence.
"When have you ever given me a reason to trust you?"
"Kelly trusts me."
"Kelly would trust a guy holding a gun to her head," Carrie rolled her eyes as she opened her root beer.
"That's some faith you got in your girl."
"Look," Carrie narrowed her eyes. "I know what this is. You're just trying to provoke me. I'm not gonna let it happen. You want to be friends with Kelly? Fine, go ahead, I'm not stopping you, but why don't you just stay the hell away from me from now on, ok? You have done nothing but try to make my life miserable for your own selfish reasons, and I'm done, ok? I'm done."
"Everything ok in here?" Mary asked as she walked into the kitchen, sensing the tension.
"Of course," Ashley smiled before walking out.
Carrie groaned as she leaned over the counter top, resting her head in her hands.
"Why do you let her affect you so much?" Mary asked as she pulled herself out a bottle of water.
"I just don't get it," Carrie shook her head. "I mean, sure y'all have known her way longer than I have, but I don't get what I'm missing."
"Who says you're missing something?"
"I have to be missing something. Because the Ashley that I see and know...she doesn't fit in your group. You guys are all so kind and welcoming and just all around good people, and she's just...she's a bitch."
Mary chuckled.
"Please tell me what I'm missing," Carrie practically begged. "I've tried being nice with her. I've tried fighting fire with fire. I've tried ignoring her. What do I have to do to make her leave us alone?"
"Us?" Mary raised an eyebrow.
Carrie blushed, "Y-yea, you know...Kelly and me. She's been trying to break up our friendship ever since I stepped foot in this town, and I just don't get why."
"Because she's threatened," Mary replied simply.
"Of what? It's not like I tried to steal Kelly from her or anything. I never once stepped in between their friendship."
Mary stared at her flatly.
"What?"
"I know you know."
"You know I know what?"
"I know you know that Ashley has or had or has feelings for Kelly...feelings that go beyond just friendship..."
"Oh...yea, that...I forgot about that..."
"Mmhmm," Marry pursed her lips.
"You knew about that?" Carrie glanced at her nervously.
"You'd have to be an idiot not to."
"Well...so what? It's not my fault that Kelly doesn't return those feelings. I'm pretty sure Kelly only had platonic feelings for Ashley before I showed up, so it's not like my moving here and becoming friends with Kelly changed anything."
"You're right. In reality, it didn't really change anything. If you hadn't shown up, Kelly would still be just as indifferent to Ashley's advances as she is with you here."
"So why is she taking it out on me?"
"Because to her, it is your fault."
"But you just said--"
"Oh forget what I just said. You think love is logical?"
Carrie frowned.
"Think about it from Ashley's side of things," Mary offered, her voice softening. "She's completely crushed out on Kelly. The two of them spend practically every waking minute together. She thinks that she has a shot with her. I mean, why else would Kelly be spending all that time with her, unless she liked her back, right?"
"Maybe because they were best friends?" Carrie suggested.
"Quit thinking logical," Mary scolded. "You're Ashley right now, remember?"
"Sorry," Carrie's eyes fell.
"Oh no you don't. You don't get to turn back into little miss I don't speak unless Kelly's around. We've come too far with you for that."
Carrie nodded, looking back up at her.
"Ok, so you're crushed out. You think she likes you back. Then, out of nowhere, here comes this new girl, and next thing you know Kelly's spending all the time she used to spend with you with her instead. You feel like you're losing her, like you're losing your chance with her...now do you see how Ashley could blame you for the fact that Kelly doesn't like her as more than a friend?"
"Yea, I guess, but it still doesn't make all the things she's done right."
"No, but don't you think her being here and being civil is maybe a step towards everybody putting all that mess behind us?"
"You call that being civil?"
"You weren't helping matters," Mary reminded with a smile.
"Yea, well...she started it."
"How?"
"She showed up."
Mary laughed, "Carrie..."
"She just...she keeps pushing me."
"You keep letting her push you."
"Yea, because I know that maybe yea, she wants to mend things. And hey maybe she really is sorry for the way she acted, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't still have feelings for Kelly. That doesn't mean that she's not just pushing me till...that she's not just biding her time until..."
"Until what?" Mary urged.
Carrie's head sank back into her hands. She took a few calming breaths before feeling a small hand on her back. "Baby..." she whispered, smelling the light scent of vanilla as Kelly wrapped her arms around her side. She glanced up, watching Mary walking out of the kitchen, towards the back of the house.
"Maybe we should just head back home," Kelly suggested, her chin resting on Carrie's shoulder.
"No, it's ok. I know how much you were looking forward to this. I'm fine."
"You sure? Because Ashley really seemed to be gloating back there."
Carrie could feel a growl rising from the back of her throat.
Kelly tilted her head down, kissing her shoulder lightly.
Carrie turned to look at her with a soft smile, "I love you."
"I know," Kelly nodded. "I love you too."
"Do you think...maybe...I was just wondering if you had thought about telling Mary and Lyndsey about us. It's just that we're around them so much, I think it would really make things easier if they knew. We wouldn't be so stressed about having to hide it from them."
"They already do know," Kelly replied.
"They what? You told them?"
"No."
"Did they come to you about it?"
"No."
"Then how do you know they know?" Carrie asked confusedly.
Kelly shrugged, "They're my closest friends...I just know."
"Kinda like how they just know?"
"Yea."
"This telepathic, psychic, crazy ass friendship thing is gonna take a while to get used to."
"What are you talking about?" Kelly giggled.
"They also know that Ashley liked or likes or whatever--they know about her feelings for you."
"Not surprising, really."
"Then why have we been hiding for so long?"
"I just wanted to wait until we were ready to be 'us' around them."
"And do you think we're ready?"
"If you are," Kelly nodded, reaching up and tucking a soft curl behind Carrie's ear.
"I am," Carrie smiled, feeling herself relax.
"Ok then," Kelly smiled back. She leaned forward, kissing her sweetly.
"Ooo," Carrie pulled back, her eyes dancing. "Does this mean tonight we get to do a little more than cuddle?"
Kelly grinned, tugging her back to her for another kiss.
"Anyone want the last two browines?" Lyndsey asked as she walked into the kitchen. "Nope? Fine, they're mine now," she grabbed the plate of brownies before walking back out again.
Kelly broke the kiss, and the two blondes erupted into a fit of giggles.

Kelly couldn't help but giggle as she and Carrie joined Mary, Lyndsey, and Jessica in Mary's bedroom. Carrie had walked straight over to Mary who was sitting on her bed and pulled her into a tight hug.
"Uh..." Mary looked at Kelly confusedly over Carrie's shoulder. "What is she doing?"
"She's thanking you," Kelly smiled.
"For what?"
"For being you."
"Oh. My. God." Lyndsey stood up from where she was sitting on the floor. "Oh my God, we get to know?" she asked excitedly, bouncing up and down.
"Y'all get to know," Kelly nodded, laughing as Lyndsey threw her arms around her.
"I told you so," she declared triumphantly, turning back to Mary who had finally been able to peel Carrie off of her.
"Well, that's only because they know you caught them making out when I specifically told you not to go in the kitchen," Mary countered.
"Yea, but I really wanted those brownies, now pay up."
"Pay up?" Carrie questioned, watching as Mary handed Lyndsey a five dollar bill. "Do the two of you bet on everything?"
"Pretty much," Lyndsey nodded, pocketing the cash.
Kelly smiled as Mary held her arms out to her. She crossed the room, allowing herself to be pulled onto her friend's lap.
"It is about damn time, though," Mary smiled. "I can't believe you told Jebbie way back when, and are just telling us now."
"It's probably because they knew I wouldn't act like a crazy person when I found out," Jessica looked at Lyndsey pointedly.
"Oh shut up," Lyndsey laughed, throwing an M&M at her.
"So..." Mary studied Kelly carefully. "Do we need to talk?"
Kelly shook her head, "Just tell me it's ok, and I'll be good."
"It's ok," Mary nodded with a soft smile as she pulled her into a tight hug. "It's way more than ok. We are so happy you found someone."
Kelly glanced at Lyndsey out of the corner of her eye, watching her enthusiastically nod in agreement. "Thanks guys," she hurriedly wiped her eyes as she pulled back. She felt Mary's arms loosening from around her as a familiar pair tugged her back onto another lap. She smiled as Carrie placed a quick kiss against her temple.
"Now..." Mary eyed the way Carrie was holding Kelly before moving her gaze up to meet the Oklahoma Natives. "Do we need to have a talk?"
"I'm not gonna hurt her," Carrie replied quickly, her eyes wide.
Mary, Lyndsey, and Jessica all broke out into laughter as Kelly tried to stifle her giggles against Carrie's shoulder.
"Just when I thought you were growing a backbone," Mary shook her head, patting Carrie's shoulder.
"You were just messing with me," Carrie nodded in realization.
"Mostly," Mary shrugged. "I mean, we will kill you if you hurt her, but we know you how much you care about her, so we figure the talk isn't necessary."
"Where's Ashley?" Kelly looked around the room as Carrie's arms tightened around her.
"Outside," Lyndsey rolled her eyes, making a motion to her mouth with her thumb and index finger.
"Since when does Ashley smoke?" Carrie asked curiously.
"She used to only do it when she drank," Kelly explained.
"Yea, but now she does it all the time," Lyndsey shrugged.
"Gross," Carrie made a face.
"Amen," Kelly nodded. "But it's her body, so..."
"So you can't say anything about it," Ashley finished her thought for her as she walked into the bedroom, tossing her lighter near her bag of clothes. She eyed Carrie closely.
Carrie had to fight hard against the urge to stick her tongue out at her. She knew there was no reason to be childish because she wasn't in competition with the girl. Kelly was her girlfriend, and Ashley was just Kelly's friend, and that's all she would ever be, but she just couldn't help but think back about all the hell Ashley had put Kelly through. She turned to Kelly at the feeling of the shorter girl's finger tips gliding up and down her arm. Kelly smiled, giving her a small wink, and Carrie felt a gentle warmth flow through her.

"I wanna do something for Carrie," Kelly said as she and Jessica sat in the kitchen, eating a bowl of cereal.
"Like let her sleep late, unlike you did for me?" Jessica asked.
Kelly frowned.
"Uh-oh," Jessica sat up straighter. "What's wrong?"
"You ever have everything screaming at you not to do something, but you know in your heart it's the right thing to do?"
"Yea," she nodded.
"So will you help me?" Kelly looked up at her with a mixture of hope and nerves.
"Of course," she agreed, squeezing her arm gently.
"Baby..." Carrie mumbled, rubbing her eyes as she walked into the kitchen.
Kelly blushed at Jessica's smile, "Care, what are you doing up so early?"
"You weren't there so I woke up."
"Ok, well, I'm coming, hold on," Kelly assured before turning back to Jessica.
"So what exactly do you need me to do?" Jessica whispered, watching as Carrie rested her head against the wall.
"Can we leave a little early to go to work today?"
"Remind me why you're working on the day of your graduation.
"Jebbie..."
"Alright, yes, we can leave early. Just let me know when you're ready to go."
"Thanks," Kelly offered a smile before she hopped down off the stool and made her way over to Carrie, wrapping her arm around her.
"Back to bed?" Carrie asked hopefully.
"Back to bed," Kelly nodded with a soft giggle.

"I don't know about this," Jessica shook her head as she pulled into the driveway, locking the car doors.
"You can't back out now," Kelly replied.
"I can sure as hell put this car in reverse and keep on driving to the movie theater."
"Jebbie," Kelly frowned as Jessica immediately locked the doors again after she unlocked the passenger side.
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because it's the right thing to do, Kelly replied simply.
"Like hell it is. Kelly, the woman is crazy. I saw what she did to you the last time you were here, remember? And I'm pretty sure Jeanne would flat out kill me if she knew I had brought you back."
"Jebbie, it's her mom."
"So? She made her choice."
"It's not that simple," Kelly shook her head. "She raised her for the past eighteen years. She was the one making sure Carrie did her homework every night. She was the one driving Carrie to all her recitals and games and everything. Whether I have a problem with the woman or not does not mean that she doesn't deserve to be there for this."
"I'm coming with you," Jessica nodded, unbuckling her seatbelt.
"I'll be fine," Kelly assured. "I won't go inside, ok?"
"Promise?"
"Pinky swear," Kelly nodded. She took a deep breath before undoing her own seatbelt and sliding out of the car after Jessica finally unlocked the door. She chewed on her bottom lip nervously as she walked up to the front door and pressed the door bell. She let out a deep sigh of relief when it was Carrie's dad who answered. "Mr. Underwood."
"Kelly," Stephen greeted with a smile. "How are you? Is everything ok?"
"Um, yes sir, I just...I was wondering if I could talk to Carrie's mom."
"Kelly," he started to shake his head.
"Please?" Kelly urged. "I promise it won't take long."
"Well, if you're sure you want to do this..."
"I'm sure," Kelly nodded, going back to chewing on her bottom lip as she watched him retreat back into the house to look for his wife. A couple minutes later she looked up just in time to see the door closing in her face. "Mrs. Underwood, wait," she quickly put a hand out, stopping it. "I have something for you."
"Whatever it is, I don't want it," Carole replied as Kelly pushed the door back open.
"Are you sure?" Kelly held out the ticket to that evening's graduation that she had been holding.
Carole looked at it with uncertainty, "What is this?"
"A ticket for tonight."
"I know that," Carole snapped back. "I meant why are you giving me this."
"Because...because you're her mother, and you should be there."
"Well thanks to you, my daughter doesn't want me there."
"Do you really think that?" Kelly asked carefully. "Do you really think she wants anything more than for both of her parents to be there tonight, supporting her?"
Carole's eyes narrowed, "I will not support this."
"I'm not asking you to support us. We have plenty of other family and friends for that. What I'm asking you to do is to support your daughter for one night when she is honored for something that she has worked so hard for these past twelve years."
Carole crossed her arms, "I want you to get off of my property. The next time you come here, I will call the cops."
Kelly's heart sank. She dropped the ticket on the floor at Carole's feet before closing the door and walking back to the car.
"How'd it go?" Jessica asked as Kelly redid her seatbelt.
"Can't say I didn't try," Kelly sighed.

"Am I good? Is my gown straight?" Kelly questioned as she dusted herself off after getting her gown caught in the car door.
"You're good," Carrie smiled, putting on her graduation cap for her. "Clumsy as all hell, but still good."
Kelly narrowed her eyes at her playfully as Carrie reached back in the car for the gold chord that symbolized a student graduating with honors and placed it carefully over her shoulders for her. "So much for waiting until we got here to put that on so I wouldn't get hurt again."
"Maybe you should've just come naked," Carrie teased.
"You would've loved that, wouldn't you?"
"Yes ma'am," Carrie grinned. "I...I know its corny, but I can still remember you sliding into English with no shoes on for my first day here like it was yesterday."
Kelly smiled.
"You didn't like me very much at first," Carrie shook her head.
"It was just a rough morning for me," Kelly shrugged.
"Well, I for one am definitely glad it only lasted the morning because I couldn't begin to imagine the past few months without you."
"Care..." Kelly fussed, sniffing back tears. "You can't make me cry before graduation. I have to sing, remember?"
"I know, I know, I'm sorry, I just..." Carrie stroked her cheek softly. "I love you, and I am so unbelievably happy to have you in my life."
"I love you too," Kelly smiled as Carrie pulled her into a hug.
"And you're happy?"
"So unbelievably so that you can't help but believe it."
Carrie laughed, shaking her head as she pulled back, "You're such a dork."
"A dork that plans to keep on loving you for a very, very long time," Kelly nodded certainly.
"Oh yea? And how long is very, very long?"
"Forever," Kelly shrugged. "Give or take a day."
Carrie beamed as she took the short Texan in her arms once more, squeezing her tightly.
