“I’ve been here for nearly a hundred years Star Child. I’m old, and our council has decided it’s time to pass the roll on to another.” He says when I catch up, leading me down the giant passageway, which was lit by medieval fires for light.
It was cool... In a... Freaky kind of way...
“Don’t say anymore - I know where this is going - you want me to be the next... Um... Whateveritis.” I finish, itching my nose.
Fingal smiles.
“Not really. But I’ve heard of your history, and the council has put you as a first choice.” He says. “I understand you have... Abilities... And that makes you individual from all of your fellow humans.”
He opens a door and leads me through it.
“No, no - you’ve got this all wrong man - I’m not the right person for what ever this might be - I’m - I’m not ready...” Hell - I don’t really know what I’m even trying to say.
Fingal reaches the door on the other side of the room and pauses at it.
“Oh really? You’ve been ready since you were a little one. Innocent as a lamb and yet as ferocious as a tiger...” He opens the door. “You’re right for this you are - but you’re putting yourself out before you even know what it is I am suggesting you to do.”
I shake my head at him and look up - suddenly my eyes widen.
“Jii’kujiiuu.” I mutter.
There were three adults and a cluster of six younger ones - all female.
“Okay... What is all of this about? Please - explain it in minute detail coz it’s really too late for me to be catching on quickly...” I mumble, nursing my aching head.
Star Child. We are the council. Our job here is to protect the Loch Ness ‘monsters’ from being discovered by humans. This council has been in place for millennia, and every hundred years or so, the human council member must be found an heir to the title. Protector Fingal is ready to relinquish his role and it is time to find a replacement.
“Wait a sec - why don’t you guys just do the protecting?” I ask. “I mean, you’re quite capable of doing it on your own.”
To know just what can be done and what cannot, we have a human supervisor to aid us in protecting Loch Ness. Humans play an important role in the Loch Ness species survival... We feel it is a humbling service to take humans under our care, as well as their fellow species. It is also customary, an agreement settled many years ago.
“Right... I’ve dreaming. I’ll wake up tomorrow and I’ll be in bed with Cat next to my head. It’s all a dream. I’m dreaming...” I mutter, pacing around in a circle.
“I assure you Star Child, this is no dream. Human and Jii’kujiiuu relations are tightened by protection of species. Humans so far aren’t advanced enough to cope with living on another planet, so for now, we cannot return the favor.” Fingal smiles slightly. “Then again, we have nothing we can really do for them in return - as their care for their environment is immaculate. So I like to believe that in helping Jii’kujiiuu protect our animals, we are returning their favors.”
I sit down and shake my head.
“You know, after everything I’ve been through, one would have thought I’d be above saying anything was weird. I would have thought nothing would surprise me. But once again I’ve got to say... This, is fucking, weird.” I smile dryly.
“Well, you’ll soon be used to it. Now, every hundred years or so the Jii’kujiiuu must leave Earth... It is a ceremonious time because this is the time a certain female or male must choose a partner to bring back to Earth and carry on the line. Those Earth Jii’kujiiuu who were not chosen to carry on the line can either leave for Quechpek - their home planet, or stay, but forfeit the right to partner and reproduce. The couple can only have one litter.” Fingal says. “Now Star Child... This is that time. The gift the Jii’kujiiuu gave you before severing ties was not just a trinket.”
I raise my eyebrows at him.
“What is it then?” I ask, pulling the object out from under my shirt attached to a chain.
Fingal beams.
“It’s key. That was how we knew we were ready to choose a new human, see normally there is one Jii’kujiiuu scout who frequents all countries, traveling all over in search of a Protector. They carry a key and when a suitable human has been found - usually a woman - they are given the key and are led back to Scotland. It’s a massive task to undertake for someone who has never before had contact with other races. In your particular case, you were subject to an experiment, a test to determine whether humans were developed enough to be able to accept alien life. Their discovery was that you were not, but there were a tiny number of individuals who obviously could - I think the entire experiment was a bit of a waste of time really, as we already knew that... But at any rate, you were perfect for the title of Protector, and so when they returned to Earth you were chosen. This, will open up the wormhole to Quechpek where these Jii’kujiiuu can complete their ceremonies.”
I sit dumbfounded - stupefied - which for me is pretty hard to do since everything that’s ever happened to me.
Fingal takes hold of my ‘key’ and gently removes it from my neck.
He presses one of its segments and rolls it - suddenly the cracks that I thought were just designs cracked open - spilling blue light.
Fingal put it on the ground and it opened up.
It’s conducting what looks like blue electricity rods between the segments, gradually getting bigger and bigger until it’s three meters tall and then abruptly the electricity splits and connects in the middle as well - sparking and carrying on - then it implodes - or explodes - something - and it fills up, looking like the watery stuff in Stargate SG 1.
“Wow.” I manage to mutter.
The Jii’kujiiuu walk around to the front of it and walk through, great ape arms swinging in a seriously lopsided fashion as they disappear into the key.
Fingal looks at me.
“You may follow. There are many people you may wish to see.” He smiles and motions to the ‘gate’.
“Nah man - I’m not going into that... I haven’t got a death wish...” I shake my head and take as step back.
“Don’t be silly Star Child, it’s not harmful.” He grabs my arm - I resist him - and suddenly he throws me - and I fall through the key.
