“Kelly...Kelly...” Ashley reached up, patting her cheek. “You’ve got to breathe.”
“I think I’m going to throw up,” Kelly nodded. “Where’s the bathroom?”
“We’re in the bathroom,” Ashley motioned around them.
Kelly took a deep breath, nodding as she looked around the small bathroom Ashley had quickly rushed them in to as they entered the building. She glanced over at her assistant who was lost in her own little world as she stared at Ashley. Her assistant and Ashley had been secretly dating for four months now. Kelly had known for the past three months and three weeks, but decided to let them tell her whenever they were ready. At least that way she didn’t have to think about all the complications that were bound to rise up from having her best friend date somebody that worked for her.
“Are you ok?”
“I think so,” Kelly replied slowly.
“We knew this was going to happen. Ever since you heard that she was on Idol, you knew that you were going to have to see her again. You knew coming to Clive’s party that she would be here,” Ashley reminded.
“I know, but I was just talking to the reporter and I looked to my left, and there she was just so...so...she’s even more beautiful than I remember,” Kelly shook her head.
“Kelly,” her assistant, Sarah, broke in gently. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but we really have to find your dressing room. You’ve got to get changed for your performance.”
“Ok,” Kelly nodded, taking another deep breath before allowing herself to be led out of the bathroom.
+++++++++++
“See...” Ashley smiled, handing Kelly a drink. “It’s not so bad, is it? Your performance was great, and you haven’t had to run into her again.”
“What makes you think that I don’t want to run into her again?” Kelly asked, pushing the drink away.
Ashley squeezed her arm comfortingly, “You never really explained what happened. You just came back to Texas without her, then you were whisked off to Idol, and that was that. You never talked about her again.”
“I was stupid,” Kelly shook her head. “I should’ve never tried to repair the damage between her and her mother.”
“But she seemed so grateful to you that you did,” Ashley reminded.
“I know, but...” Kelly sighed. “Her mom didn’t want her coming to L.A. with me. She wanted her to go to college instead, and she tried so hard to talk Carrie out of it. So Carrie decided to make a compromise with her: she’d go to L.A. with me and if things didn’t work out, then she’d move back home and go to college. So, we moved out to L.A., and it was hard, unbelievably so, and that took a toll on her. I could see that, but I did everything I could to keep her spirits up. But of course, every time we hit another speed bump, her mother was right there, telling Carrie that she didn’t have to go through that, and that she should just come home.”
“Her parents had moved back to Oklahoma while y’all were over there, right?”
“Yep,” Kelly nodded. “And then right when it finally seemed like it was our turn, like we had finally paid our dues and all our hard work was going to be paid off...”
“It all came crashing down.”
“We saved everything we made and put it towards an apartment so we could move out of that crappy room we were living in, and the day we moved in, the apartment burned down. My car had been towed twice that week. She lost one of her jobs. The guy I had been doing demo work with became seriously ill. We didn’t have any money. We had already sold her car by that point for extra cash, so we lived out of mine for a couple days to save up enough gas money to get back to Texas and move back in with my mom so we could start saving up again to go back out to L.A., or at least that was the plan.”
“Until she called her mom?”
“Until she called her mom,” Kelly sighed. “And by that point there was nothing I could do. She was so broken, and her mom knew just what to say, and of course she threw the promise Carrie made back in her face. So...her mom flew out to L.A. to bring her back to Oklahoma, and I drove back to Texas by myself.”
“That seriously sucks.”
“I should’ve called her,” Kelly replied. “I should’ve let her know that we were going to be ok, that we were going to work through this, but it hurt too much. I felt so deserted, even though I knew I couldn’t blame her for what she did. She wasn’t made for living like we had been living out there. It was just too much for her. Then, as soon as I got back, Jebbie had me try out for Idol, and the next thing I knew I was touring all over the world. It just all happened so fast.”
“Maybe we should go,” Ashley suggested, her eyes moving to the small dance floor nervously.
Kelly followed her gaze to find Carrie standing there, talking to a small group of people.
“You still love her,” Ashley noted as Kelly’s eyes started to well up.
“I never stopped.”
“Kelly, we don’t have to be here. You performed. We can go now, and nobody would complain.”
“I wonder when she stopped,” Kelly watched the taller blonde closely.
“Why are you putting yourself through this? Y’all were young. Life happens. Y’all made it way further than any other couple would have in your shoes. And it’s not like you can do anything about it now. Your career is through the roof right now, and hers is starting to really take off as well. Could you imagine the damage this would do?”
“I still love her,” Kelly said simply. “I thought I could stop. I tried to stop, but all I really did was bury every memory of her so far down that it wouldn’t hurt me anymore.”
“Help?” Ashley turned to her girlfriend worriedly.
“Maybe she should go talk to her,” Sarah suggested. “I mean, that’s what everybody here is waiting for anyway, right? The most successful Idol to congratulate the newest Idol.”
“You are no help,” Ashley turned back to Kelly to find her walking towards the dance floor. “Kelly, no.”
“Let her go,” Sarah took Ashley’s arm, keeping her next to her.
“You don’t know how much Carrie meant to her,” Ashley shook her head. “This has got to be killing her right now.”
“Let her go,” Sarah insisted, watching as Kelly approached Carrie slowly.
Kelly swallowed hard as she reached up to tap Carrie’s shoulder.
“Yea?” Carrie turned around quickly with a smile. “K-Kelly...”
“I wanna know...I need to know when,” Kelly closed her eyes in an attempt to keep the tears from falling at the rush of emotions she saw pass through the other girl’s eyes. She could only imagine that was what she had looked like when she had noticed the country singer on the red carpet.
“Kell, I...you...y-your performance was great,” Carrie nodded, unsure of what else to say.
“I wanna know when,” Kelly repeated.
“When what?” Carrie shook her head helplessly, wanting nothing more than to take the original Idol in her arms at the sight of the tears falling down her cheeks.
“When you stopped loving me,” Kelly replied as she opened her eyes to look up at her. “I wanna know when you realized that is wasn’t worth the fight anymore.”
“I tried out for Idol for you,” Carrie’s bottom lip trembled as her own eyes started to sting. “I thought...I didn’t know how else to get to you. I just wanted to talk to you, and there was no way for me to do that. Your numbers were all unlisted, and you have this huge team of security, and none of them knew who some nobody from Oklahoma was, so I thought if I tried out for Idol then maybe you’d see me, and maybe you’d...then the show happened so fast, and before I knew it I had won, and I just...it all happened so fast...you must know that.”
“Care...” Kelly pleaded with her. “Please just tell me when you stopped loving me, so I can finally start getting some sleep at night.”
Carrie shook her head.
“Care, please...if I ever meant anything to you, you’d tell me.”
“Never,” Carrie said softly.
“Care, please...”
“No, Kell,” Carrie took a step towards her, ignoring all the eyes that were turned their way. “Baby...”
Kelly choked back a sob.
“Never,” she repeated. “I never stopped loving you.”
“Please don’t do this if you don’t mean it,” Kelly shook her head. “Because I can’t handle any more pain.”
“I mean it with everything I have in me. I never once stopped loving--”
She was cut off by Kelly’s lips pressing firmly against her own as the Texan threw her arms around her. Carrie wrapped her arms around her waist, sighing in satisfaction of the feeling of holding her once again. She couldn’t even begin to count how many nights over the past few years she had woken up from dreaming about her only to find her arms empty.
Kelly finally pulled back, breathless.
“So...I take that as a you still love me too?” Carrie blushed at the flashes from the cameras that were going off.
“You could take it that way,” Kelly laughed softly as Carrie brushed the tears from her cheeks.
“And can I take it as maybe we still have a shot at this?”
“I sure as hell hope so,” Kelly replied in earnest.
Carrie smiled, leaning back to her for another kiss, softer this time.
“Can we go somewhere?” Kelly asked, pulling back as more flashes went off. “Somewhere quiet so we can talk?”
“My hotel is just down the street from here,” Carrie nodded, taking her hand. “I’ve missed you so much...”
“Talk,” Kelly reminded.
“I know,” Carrie assured. “I swear I could spend days talking to you right now. I just feel like I’ve missed so much of your life, and you of mine, and I hate that feeling, and--” She was cut off again by another kiss.
“Well...” Kelly fought down a grin as she pulled back. “I do have a world tour coming up, and I have to sing on the Grammys this week, so maybe...”
Carrie’s eyes sparked.
“Maybe we’ll have to do something other than just talking all night...I mean, there are plenty of other things we need to catch up on too...”
“Let’s get out of here,” Carrie smiled.
Kelly nodded, holding onto her hand tightly as they made their way through the crowd. She looked back over at Ashley and Sarah who were still standing at the bar and gave them a small smile and a wave.
“Told you so,” Sarah grinnd, turning around to take the drink Kelly had pushed away.
“You realize that there are going to be pictures of that over every front page in America tomorrow, right?”
“You realize that for the first time in the past like four years, your best friend seemed truly happy just now as she was walking out of here?”
Ashley nodded, giving in to a smile.
“Whoever said your first love wouldn’t last, huh?” Sarah nudged her playfully as she ordered them both another round of drinks.
