Rock of Ages, Forever Pt72
The light conversation around the table centered on the up coming tour. The record had been on the shelves for a over a month already and held steady at number two on the charts. The first single charted at one, the video remained the number one request since it debut on the music channels. Interviews with the band were requested from all over the world. Several of them had spent most of the day on the phone doing some of those interviews. All in all the promotion for this album was strong.
Joe watched Sav most of the evening. He was very quite, he would occasionally comment about some thing. Rick even tried to goad him into a light banter they have enjoyed over the past, but that didn’t even draw him out. He sat there and stared at his wine glass or ran his finger around the rim, making it hum with high-pitched music. Nick sat a small desk going through the mountain of paper as he listened to them talk about the tour. He also had been watching Sav and was delighted when he had dropped his guard somewhat and Nick took that opportunity to probe his mind. Sav was so lost in thought, that he didn’t even notice he was there. It frightened Nick a little that he didn’t notice, but he couldn’t determine why.
“Who are the reservation for Sav?” Joe said as he pushed his plate away.
Sav glanced up at him. “Me.”
The room grew quite, every one looked at him. Nick put his pen down to listen.
“What reservation?” Phil asked.
Sav picked up the wine bottle and poured himself more blood wine.
“A conformation came by fax today for Sav. I didn’t get the chance to finish reading it.” Joe told them.
“And that is all you need to know.” Sav replied.
“Actually, it’s not. Where are you going and why?” Joe asked him.
Sav thought about his words before he spoke again. “We need a break from each other before we hit the road. Being here together for the past two years, has spiked a few nerves. If we don’t want to kill each other, we need time to ourself’s.”
“It has been a little nerve racking at times, we don't need a break. I think I can speak for every one here, that I’m looking forward to going on this tour, as soon as possible. It’s been too long already.” Phil said.
“I can understand why nobody wanted their families to come here. I don’t blame you for that, their safety is more important.”
“We don’t blame you either Sav.” Rick told him.
“Viv, when was the last time you saw your family?” Sav asked without looking at him.
“Uh…it’s been awhile, but I have…” Vivian started.
“Two years four months.” Sav informed him. “What about you Joe, have you seen your daughter?”
“No, just pictures.”
“My point exactly. I know we all agreed that having family here or going home to visit, it would take us longer to finish. None of us anticipated everything that has happened, most of it my fault," Sav held up his hands to stop the few that wanted to protest. "Deny that all you want, but it's the truth. Everyone here has a family that they haven’t seen in a long time, because it has taken us so long to record this album. Who wants to go another two years with out seeing them?”
“It would be nice to see Matthew.” Phil commented.
“If I’m not mistaken, I think Rick’s girlfriend broke up with him because of this, and I’m partly to blame for that. How many times did I walk away from everything. This album would have been finished in six months if it weren’t for that.”
“I didn’t think you knew about my break up with Toni.” Rick said.
“I know everything that goes on in this house Rick.” Sav commented. “Joe had an argument with Rebecca a while back, about Amber’s last name. She wanted it to be hers and Joe wanted her to have his.”
“I think we finally decided she would have both.” Joe said.
“No, just yours. I persuaded her to make it that way.” Sav told him.
“How did you do that?” Joe asked.
“I went to see her.”
Joe looked at him stunned.
“It took another couple thousand dollars a month for her to see my point.”
“She already gets to much already,” Joe grumbled. “I can’t afford to send her any more.”
“It’s already taken care of Joe.”
“By who?” Joe huffed.
“The Foundation.” Nick finally spoke up. “It was Rick’s idea.”
“I don’t need you to pay my bills Sav.” Joe said glaring at him.
“I’m not, the Foundation is.”
“Even worse, because it’s Nick’s money.”
“The same amount has been sent out to each and every one of your families. And will continue to do so, for a very long time.” Nick told them.
“I’m being to feel like Sav here.” Rick said wiggling in his chair. “A kept man.”
Sav smiled at his comment.
“Why weren’t we told about this?” Phil asked.
“Because I knew you all would have refused it.” Sav shrugged.
“And you guessed right.” Joe retorted.
“Anyway it’s done.” Sav locked eyes with Joe. “Back to the first issue, this will give every one a chance to get to see their families for a couple of weeks. I don’t have one to go see, so I’ll just amble off some where on the globe.”
“That’s not true Sav.” Vivian stated. “You know Kelsey would love to see you.”
“Thanks Vivian, but I can’t.”
“You do have a family Sav, us.” Rick put in.
“I know that, but I don’t have children or a wife, you guys do. I will stop by and see my parents first.”
“So where are you going?” Phil asked.
“I thought about the beach somewhere.”
“You hate the beach.” Joe snapped.
“It’s a good place to see the stars at night.”
“You’re going alone?” Joe asked, darting his gaze over to Nick.
“Yes. I need to work out a few things.”
“Like what?” Viv said.
“Not to snack on the fans for one. I haven’t been around a lot of mortals for a long time and I have to learn to control that before I even think about being on stage.”
“And not zipping around like Speedy Gonzales.” Rick commented with a chuckle.
Sav chuckled. “That too.”
“You’ve been here with us for this long and it doesn’t seem to affect you.” Phil said.
“You think so? It does, believe me.” Sav told them, jabbing his fingers in his hair to prop his head up and staring at the table.
“You hide it very well.” Joe said in a deadpan tone of voice.
“Do I!” Sav barked, snapping his head back up. “Some days are better than other’s. That’s why I would stay in my room or leave for a while, it was too much. Even your little trick of 'blood letting' didn't help, it made the need to take every one of you even harder to resist.”
Every one stared at him in shock.
“We had no idea about this Sav.” Phil said after a few minutes.
“Of course you didn’t and I didn’t want you to know.” Sav rose from the table and went over to Nick. He took some papers from the desk and went back over to the table, passing them to everyone.
“What’s this?” Vivian asked picking his up.
“Plane tickets.” Sav replied still waiting for Joe to take his.
Joe only glared at him. Sav finally laid it on the table in front of him.
“You all leave in two days. Have fun, say hi to everyone for me.” Sav looked up at the clock. “We’ll meet back here in about six weeks. I’ll see you guys later.”
With everything finally said, Sav went over to the phone and punched in the number. “Bring the car around Arthur.” Hanging up, he started to leave the room.
“Where are going Sav? We need to talk about this more.” Phil called out.
Sav stopped and turned back to them. “What else is there to talk about? You can stay here if you like, I’m not. Unlike you, I leave tonight.”
“But….” Vivian started.
Sav had already left the room. He bounded up the stairs to retrieve his bags form his room. Taking one last look around, he went back downstairs and out the front door to wait for the car.
“I hate it when he does this kind of stuff.” Rick said.
“And wait’s for the last minute to tell us.” Vivian commented.
“Did you know any thing about this Nick?” Phil asked.
“No actually I didn’t. I knew he was leaving, but for all of you, no.” Nick replied.
“Not even about the plane tickets?”
“No.”
“Where did he get this money for these?” Vivian asked looking at his. "The band as a whole is rich, but individually, we aren't."
“I would assume he took it from my private account at the Foundation.” Nick told them.
“And you didn’t know about that either?” Joe said angrily.
“No, I didn’t Mr. Elliott.”
“Then how did he get the money out?” Rick asked.
“He has had access to my account for three years, but this is the only time that he has actually used it.” Nick told them.
“It doesn’t bother you that he paid for our tickets?”
“No, why should it? It’s his money too, and if that is what makes him happy, then he can take as much as he wants.”
“What do you mean his money?” Joe asked. "Doesn't he still have his private accounts from before he..."
Nick smiled slightly as he cut Joe off, “At the same time I gave him access. I also made him part owner and sole beneficiary of the Foundation and all my assets.”
“Holy shit!” Phil exclaimed.
“You plan on dying soon Nick?” Rick asked with a smirk.
“No.”
Joe stared at him in disbelief, then softly said, “You love him that much don’t you?”
Everyone’s head turned in Nick’s direction waiting for his response.
Joe held Nick’s eyes for long moments.
“Yes, I do Mr. Elliott. I have never hidden that fact.”
Joe ran his hand through his hair, felling uncomfortable under Nick’s intense stare. He slowly pushed his chair back and rose, leaving his ticket on the table, he left the room.
“Well gentlemen it has been a pleasure all these months.” Nick began as he to rose from his chair, “I will see you when you return.” Taking his papers, Nick also left the room to finish his work in his office.
Phil chuckled. “This has turned out to be the most outrages years I have had in my entire life.”
“Same here.” Rick put in.
“What’s it going to be like for the next ten?” Vivian said.
“Interesting I’m sure.”
Joe found Sav on the massive front porch, waiting for the car. Stepping over to stand beside him, he looked out over the meadow. “I have something nagging at the back of my head.” Joe said breaking the long silence between them.
“And what is that?” Sav replied without looking at him.
Joe took a deep breath and blurted it out. “That you’re not coming back.”
Sav turned to him. “Why do you think that?”
Joe shoved his hands in his pockets. “I don’t know, just a feeling I have. You’ve done something like this before.”
“I have came back each time.”
“Not every time.” Joe whispered looking at the ground.
Sav stepped in front of him, placing his finger under his chin and raised his head so that he was looking at him. “I will be coming back Joe.” he told him.
“How am I suppose to know that?” he replied.
Sav glanced down at his lips, before Joe could say anything else Sav, quickly leaned forward and gently touched his lips. Running his tongue across Joe’s to gain access to the warmth that awaited him. Joe opened up to him and Sav’s tongue dipped in to taste his sweetness. Moaning with pleasure, Sav buried his hand in his hair and pulled him deeper into his mouth. Pulling back Sav looked into is eyes, he knew his own where gold rimmed with desire.
Running his thumb across Joe's mouth, Sav looked up at him and replied, “I have to much to look forward to.”
Arthur pulled up with the car and got out, he went the steps to take Sav's bags, placing them in the trunk. Sav turned, going down the steps to get in the car.
“Have a pleasant trip Mr. Savage.” Arthur told him.
“Thanks Arthur, I will.”
Arthur had seen them on the porch when he pulled up and winked at Joe as he turned to disappear back into the shadows.
Joe quickly bounder down the stairs up to the car. “At least tell me where you’re going?”
“I’ll call you about once a week.” Sav told him.
“Come on Sav don’t d…..”
“See you in about six weeks Joe.” Sav smiling, putting the car in gear. Joe’s heart skipped a beat at his rarely seen smile. Sav pouched the gas pedal, flinging rocks until the tires gripped the ground, the car shot forward, causing Joe to back up a few steps.
“Sav wait…” Joe yelled.
He stuck his hand out the window and waved bye.
Joe watched the car speed down the drive, break lights came on as he got ready to turn. Joe could hear the tires squealing on the pavement as he hit the main road. The high pitched sound of the engine as he changed the gears, the sound faded into the night.
“Mighty big rush to get out of here wasn’t he?” Nick said from the porch.
Joe spun toward him. “I’m surprised you let him leave...alone!”
“He wanted it that way.”
“Since when did you start letting him do what he wanted?” Joe shot back.
"Since when did you start caring what he does? As I understand it, your relationship is still very fragile."
"We are working..." Joe stopped himself from explaining to Nick his relationship with Sav, he probably already knows how they are trying to repair that. "He probably left so fast because he didn't want you to suddenly change your mind about him leaving."
“We have grown closer since the last argument Mr. Elliott. I don’t want it to change. If letting him leave alone will help our relationship, then I will let him go.”
“He might try to do something stupid.” Joe shot back.
Nick got the meaning behind his words. “If the way he just kissed you is any indication that he will try and kill himself again, then you’re sadly mistaken.”
“You know how well he hide’s his feeling.”
“Yes I do Mr. Elliott. If you tried using your mind, you would be able to feel his presents there.”
“I do, but I can’t feel him all the time, especially when he’s far away.”
“Then try it at night, when you can see the moon. Let your mind and body relax, think of nothing but Rick and trust me when I tell you this. You will feel him.”
“How will I know it’s him?” Joe asked.
“You will know Mr. Elliott.” Nick said and returned back into the house.
Joe grumbled to himself as he followed Nick back inside. Everyone agreed to pack their things and meet back down in the kitchen to discuss more of the tour and how to protect Sav from the daylight. Nick told them not to worry about that, he had already taken care of it and whatever they had decided on about travel plans, whatever the expense, was fine with him. They could only stare at him in shocked disbelieve and wondered what had gotten into him lately. He had let Sav leave, now he was telling them to spend whatever amount of money they wanted while on tour, he just shrugged and left them to finish talking.
Two days later, Author drove them to the airport to see them off, bid his goodbyes until they returned. Landing in the States, they promised each other that they would keep in touch over this break, then headed in different directions to catch their final flight to their destinations.
