Rock of Ages, Forever Pt74
“Good evening Miss Wallace.”
Rebecca gave a startled yelp as she spun around, dropping the plates that she was holding, shattering when they hit the stone floor of the balcony.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.”
Rebecca recognized him after a few minutes.
“What do you want?” Rebecca asked.
“There is nothing I require Miss Wallace.”
“Then why are you here? How did you know where I live?”
“I make it a point to get to know where my clients live.” Nick told her.
“I’m not your client.” She shot back.
“Ok, then part of my family.”
“Family, I’m not that either.” She told him.
“Rebecca is everything….” Joe said as he came out and saw Nick. “What do you want?”
“It seems that I was already asked that.”
“Did you answer?”
“He said he didn’t require anything.” Rebecca said.
“I find that hard to believe.” Joe dripped with sarcasm. “And I’ll save you the trouble about asking where Sav is, because I don’t know, he still won’t tell me.”
“I’m not here about that.”
“Then why are you here?” Joe asked.
“May I?” Nick said making a jester toward the chair.
“Your not staying long enough to get comfortable.” Joe told him.
Nick pulled out the chair and sat down. “Please join me.”
“I have to clean up my broken plates, thank you.” Rebecca said heatedly.
“I’ll have them replaced tomorrow. What I have to say, cannot.”
“Sav steal all your money Nick?” Joe chuckled.
“No, he hasn’t touched it. This is a.... more serious matter.”
“Who did you kill this time?” Joe asked.
“Mr. Elliott this is no joking matter.” Nick implied.
Amber came out then and smacked Joe on the leg. “Da’ee.” Joe picked her up and sat her on his lap.
“Beautiful child.” Nick commented, stealing a little wave of his hand.
“And very off limits Nick, don’t ever touch her.”
“You under estimate me Mr. Elliott. I do not feed on child, not even when I have starved for months on end, did I ever once, attempt to take the life of a child.” Nick’s words were harsh.
“Doesn’t matter. If you touch my daughter, I will kill you.” Joe said heatedly.
“It is not I, you have to worry about. But others of our kind that make sure we are never discovered. Miss Wallace knows about us.”
“I don’t know that much.” She told him.
“Never the less, you know to much already. They will harm you and your daughter.”
“I will die to protect them.” Joe said, pulling Amber closer to him.
“Against ones older than I am. It is you who will die Mr. Elliott. When they finish with you, they will go after Miss Wallace and… Amber is it?”
“So what are you saying?” Joe asked.
“They will be under my protection as you and the others are. No one dare harm you and if they do, they answer to me.” Nick reached into his pocket to pull out a small envelope and dumped it’s contains on the table. “You should wear this at all times, never remove them. If one should break or get lost, call this number and one will be brought to you immediately, no matter where you are.”
Nick rose and went behind Rebecca, latching the clasp on the necklace.
“It’s beautiful.” She commented after looking at it.
Going over to Amber, he placed the same kind on her. “It’s my family crest. The inter twining circles means love, peace and happiness. The solid blue in the middle stands for eternity, which I placed there after I came across.”
“And this is suppose to keep them safe.” Joe asked doubtfully. "What guarantee can you give me that others, like you, will not harm them. I'm not sure...I know I can't trust you."
"This one of those times you will have to Mr. Elliott." Nick smiled down at him, then continued. "I'm held in high regards within the Community, everyone knows my family crest, if they don't, they soon find out. Show them that you are wearing these and they will not harm you. Word will spread that you are part of my family.”
“But, we're not.” Rebecca said.
“You are now, along with Amber, but it stops there. You must never tell anyone else. Instill into Amber that she is to do the same.”
“I never knew that they could be in danger.” Joe said softly.
“You can rest easily Joe.” Nick said and caressed Amber's fat cheeks with his finger. “She will grow up to be beautiful, like her mother.”
Joe resisted the urge to pull her away from his evil touch.
Rebecca saw the longing in his eyes. “Would you like to hold her Mr. de Brabant?”
Joe shot her warning look. She smacked him in the arm.
“I’ve always wanted children. After the Crusades, I thought I would find a wife and settled down, to help me forget about those times.” Nick said softly.
“Why didn’t you?” Rebecca asked curiously.
“The lure and seduction of living forever was more appealing. And I have regretted that decision for nearly eight hundred years.”
“Of becoming a vampire?” Joe asked.
“No, of not having children while I was still a mortal.”
Joe continued to watch his face as Amber grabbed his finger, yanking on it. A soft smile danced on his lips and Amber gibbered in baby talk.
Joe slowly stood up. “You can hold her Nick, if you want too.”
Nick's smile quickly faded and he looked at him. “You would trust me with her?”
“No, but if you hurt her, Sav would have a tantrum.” Rebecca said. “He has spoiled her rotten while he was here. Like you, she is the daughter he will never have. And will go to the ends of the earth to keep her safe.”
“And I would do no less.” Nick said softly as he reached out to take her.
Amber went willing into his arms, wrapping her tiny arms around his neck. Nick rubbed her back in slow light circles.
Amber leant back and poked him in the mouth. Nick grabbed her finger with his lips, tickling the tip Amber giggled and snatched her hand away, only to do it again with the same results. The next time she did it, soft little grunts followed her finger.
“It would appear that she already knows.” Nick let his fangs descend and showed them to her.
Joe was out of his seat in seconds, ready to grab her away from him. Nick held up his hand to stop him. Amber touched his fangs, giggling she turned to Joe and Rebecca and pointed at them.
“No, mommy and daddy don’t have them.” Nick told her softly.
She touched them again. She quickly turned in Nick’s arms and pointed toward the door. “`locks.”
“She wants to play….” Rebecca started.
“I know what she wants. Lets go find your blocks.”
Nick turned and headed into the house with Joe hot on his heels. Rebecca grabbed his arm to pull him back. “Let them be Joe.” She told him.
“But…we’re to far….”
“It’ll be ok.”
“How can you say that when you know what he is capable of?”
“I know exactly what he is capable of, but that doesn't mean he will hurt Amber. You didn’t seem to mind all those times that Sav was here.”
“That’s because I didn’t know.” Joe retorted.
“Sav would never harm her Joe, because she is a part of you. He wouldn’t even take my blood, because he knew.”
“Even before I did.”
“Not once, in all the times he was here, did he show his alter ego fully. Even the morning he fell asleep on the couch and I had forgotten what he told me about waking him up, but Amber did and it frightened me to death. Believe me when I tell you, he did not wake up with golden eyes and fangs bared.”
“He didn’t.” Joe said with surprise.
“No, he picked her up and laid back down with her. They both fell back to sleep, he had his arms wrapped around her. When I went to take her and lay her down, he asked me to leave her there.”
“I always thought that the vampire woke up first. At least that is what he told me along time ago.” Joe said. “He never told me that he came here.”
“He didn’t want you to know.” Rebecca said.
“Why?”
“Because he was afraid that you would react just like you are now.”
They heard Nick laughing inside. Joe looked around the corner to see what they were doing. His jaw hung open, Nick lay on the floor, on his stomach, playing with the blocks, stacking them up and Amber would knock them down.
‘That doesn’t look like the savage beast I keep hearing about.” Rebecca remarked.
“Oh shit where’s the camera? I need to get pictures of this because no one will believe me.”
Rebecca retrieved the camera from her desk and handed it to Joe. He went inside and took several pictures of them playing together.
Nick glanced up at him. “Why are you taking pictures Mr. Elliot?”
“No one will believe me, when I tell them that you were doing this.”
Nick chuckled. “I believe the last time I had my picture taken, I didn’t even show up.”
“Scared to have your picture taken Nick.” Joe said smugly.
“No I was there. It’s just that I didn’t show up, just like I can’t see my reflection in the mirror any more.”
“Oh well to bad.” Joe took several more pictures and left them to play.
Hours later Nick brought her into the kitchen where Joe and Rebecca where eating dinner. “I believe she is tried.” She had her head on his shoulder, almost asleep.
“I’ll take her and put her to bed.” Joe said as he got up.
“No, just point in the right direction, you finish your quiet dinner.”
When Joe didn’t answer Nick glanced up at him. “Mr. Elliott, I just spent three hours playing with her, because you trusted me enough to do so and there is not a scratch on her.”
Joe hesitated a moment longer. “First door on the right.”
“Thank you.” Nick left the room, carrying the sleeping child in his arms.
“I’ll never trust him no matter what.”
“You just did Joe, by allowing him to play with Amber tonight.”
“Yeah well.”
Nick came back down and joined them. “She is a delightful child and smart. Thank you Miss Wallace and Mr. Elliott for giving me the opportunity to enjoy her company.”
“Jeez Nick, I miss the sarcastic tone in your voice.” Joe said.
Rebecca smacked him again.
“I didn’t think it appropriate for this evening.”
“Thank you for this.” Rebecca said tracing the necklace with her fingertips.
“My pleasure. I’ll take my leave. Mr. Elliott, I’ll be seeing you again in a couple of weeks.”
“Only if you’re there.” Joe smirked.
Nick ever so slightly bowed to them and left them.
Joe and Rebecca sat around for hours on the couch talking about his visit. Joe was still trying to figure out his behavior of late. He thought that maybe it had to do with what happened with Sav a short time ago, because Nick was definitely not the same. Even letting him play with Amber tonight had him wondering about himself and why he let it happen.
Rebecca made suggestion that they should go to bed…together and rekindled the fire from the other day. Joe didn’t need to be asked twice, he was undressing her as they went upstairs to her room and spent most of the night in each other’s arms.
