Patrick knocked on the guest bedroom door again. He had been worried when Becca hadn’t gotten up early as she always seemed to. But then again, she had been out late the night before trying to sort out things for their wedding. Just the slightest mention of their upcoming wedding brought a smile to his face. But then he turned his attention back to the door of the guest room, not wanting to just barge in on her as she slept.
“Reby? Are you awake?”
He knocked again, hoping to hear some sign of movement from the other side of the door. Not hearing anything, he opened the door and saw that Becca was still asleep on the bed. She had spent the past few nights over, trying to escape the chaos that her house had become. Luckily she had managed to convince her mother not to worry too much about them, and they had even had her mother come over for dinner with them one night.
Patrick crossed the room over to the bed, and felt the familiar smile cross his face as he thought of how beautiful and peaceful she looked asleep there. But he knew that she had plans to go shopping with Cat to try and sort out more last minute things, and would be upset if she were late. He sat down lightly on the edge of the bed, careful to keep far enough away to not startle her.
“Becca, it’s time for you to get up and get ready to go shopping with Cat. You asked me to wake you up, remember?”
As there was no motion or even sign of recognition, Patrick began to worry. Becca was a fairly light sleeper, not to mention an early riser. And yet it was already almost noon and she hadn’t stirred, even after he had tried to wake her. He tentatively reached out and shook her lightly, worry growing to near panic when even that didn’t merit a reaction. His mind went to the worst scenario and he reached out to her neck, feeling for a pulse. Just barely there was a slow pulse under his fingers and Patrick knew that something was seriously wrong, and his instincts went out of the window.
Patrick rushed and grabbed the phone, frantically dialing ‘911’ while rushing back into the guest bedroom. After getting an ambulance on the way over, Patrick called the only other person he could think of, Cat.
“Hullo?”
“Cat, something’s wrong with Becca. She’s not waking up, and I think she might be dying. What do I do?”
Patrick felt on the edge of tears, but knew he had to keep calm so that he could be in control and do whatever needed to be done to help Becca. He absently brushed the hair out of Rebecca’s face, trying not to think of the worst case scenario.
“What?! Well, did you call an ambulance?”
“Yes, first thing. They said they’re on their way. But Cat, I don’t know what happened. She came back from shopping with you and Ivy last night, and rather than joining me for the rest of the movie, she just went off to bed, asking me to wake her up in the morning. I checked in on her when I went to bed not long after, and she was sleeping. God, what’s wrong with her?”
“Patrick, calm down. Um, first question, did she take any of the sleeping pills before she went to bed?”
“Sleeping pills? I didn’t even know she had any. What does that mean, Cat?” Patrick paced around the room, worry and panic having a heyday with his emotions. Although he was concerned about the mention of sleeping pills. Becca had never mentioned them, and he hadn’t seen her taking anything before bed.
“Yeah, she’s been taking sleeping pills for about a week now. The stress and everything hasn’t been letting her sleep, so she asked her doctor for something to help her sleep. Why don’t you look and see if she took one last night. She should have only a few missing from the pack.”
Patrick glanced around the room, and noticed a small packet on the dresser and walked over, noticing that it was indeed pills, but there were a lot more than just a few missing. Why hadn’t he noticed the pills before? Probably because he hadn’t been in the guest room much, giving Becca her privacy. “Um, Cat, how many should be out of the test pack?”
“Only about five or six. She got them when she went with Ivy for her check up. ... Patrick, how many are gone from the pack?”
He could tell the concern in Cat’s voice, and hated to see what he did. “Almost half the packet is gone. Cat, do you think Becca would try to kill herself?” He slumped down on the foot of the bed, the packet of sleeping pills having fallen on the floor at his feet. Could he have really missed the signs that were supposed to come with suicidal people, in Becca of all people? She had seemed so happy, and perfect. And now she might be gone.
“Bloody hell, Trick! Listen, this isn’t your fault. Perhaps Becca just accidentally lost some of the pills or you know how she sometimes has trouble taking pills. Maybe that’s what caused so many pills to be missing. We don’t know what happened. Just listen to me, Becca and you will be fine. You have your wedding in a few weeks. I’m heading over your way now, okay?”
Patrick heard the sounds of sirens from around the corner a few blocks. “Cat, don’t bother. I think the ambulance is here. Thank you though. For everything. I have to go now. God, I hope she comes out okay.”
“Patrick, don’t you give up on this! I’ll meet you at the hospital, so don’t worry about anything. Do you want me to call Pete and Ivy?”
“No! ... Don’t worry anyone else. Besides, I might be overreacting. The ambulance is outside, Cat. I have to get off the phone.”
Patrick clicked off the phone and let it drop as he walked out to let the paramedics in. He was in a numb sort of panicked mood and suddenly felt as if he would be sick to his stomach, but refused to leave Becca. The paramedics rushed in and started doing the routine measures to get her to the ambulance and off to the hospital as Patrick followed along, being stopped just at the back of the ambulance.
“Sir, we can’t let you come along.”
“Please, she’s my fiancée.”
“Hurry up then.”
With that, Patrick hopped up into the back of the ambulance and it tore off towards the hospital, the paramedics already working frantically at getting her stabilized and such before reaching the hospital.
