Rebecca had been stabilized and taken into a room, where they said the only thing they could do was to wait for the medicine to leave her system, as they hadn’t been able to get all of the medications out of her, because they were already so far into her bloodstream it would be more risky to try and clean them out rather than just leaving them in her system. But the doctors had reassured Patrick that she would be alright.
He hadn’t left her side the entire time, with the only exception being when they had taken her back to hook her up to the machines that would clear her of the medicines. The entire time she had been back there, he had paced the waiting room, his hat pulled low on his face to cover his eyes which had already overflowed from the tears that he had been stubbornly refusing to let fall.
But soon enough Rebecca was taken to a normal room, and Patrick was back at her side. He sat down in the chair, brushing her hair back out of her face, desperately pleading for her to open her eyes.
“I’m her bloody sister, let me through!” The sounds of a familiar voice shook Patrick out of his worried stupor, or at least a little. There was obviously some sort of scuffle going on out in the waiting area.
“Sorry, miss. But we can’t let you back there. Miss Wentz’s fiancé will have to give permission for anyone else to go back to her room. Mrs. Ross, we can’t let you through.”
“OY, PATRICK, COME LET ME THROUGH!!” It was obvious that Cat was beyond frustrated at the moment, not by it having raised several points in volume, but by how it had turned out to be almost a growling tone.
Patrick wiped at the tears on his cheeks and headed out to the lobby, knowing that if he didn’t get out there soon, Cat would have his head on a silver platter. He noticed Cat stubbornly arguing with an orderly across the room, and just as soon as Cat saw him, she pushed past the young guy and rushed over, wrapping her arms around Patrick for a moment.
“Mrs. Ross! I can’t let you through. And personally, I don’t believe you and Miss Wentz are sisters.” The orderly had rushed back over and was about to drag Cat away when she spun back around with a glare that Patrick had only seen once before, but knew it was something nasty.
“Um, Cat’s fine. And she is Becca’s sister. She just got married a week ago, is for the name difference. The accent, well, it comes from living in England for a few years. Excuse us.”
Patrick took Cat’s arm and led her off towards the room where they had Becca stabilized, although with wires and tubes attached. He walked back over to the bedside chair and sat down in the bedside chair, reaching out and taking Becca’s hand, just out of habit and worry. He turned back to Cat, who was still standing in the doorway of the hospital room staring in shock at the still unconscious form of Becca.
“She’s going to be alright. They just have to let the rest of the medication that they couldn’t get out of her system to wear off. Once it wears off, she’ll be fine. But I’m supposed to monitor her medication. And both you and I know how well that will go over with Reby.”
Patrick chuckled, trying to add a little humor to the situation. Cat merely shook her head and walked into the room, heading over to the other side of the bed and lightly running her hand over the edge of Becca’s face. It was a little surreal to see Becca laid up in the hospital unconscious, when they had planned on going shopping for Becca’s wedding. Cat gave a slightly teary laugh at Patrick’s attempts to lighten the mood.
“Yeah, Becca probably won’t like having to admit she’s indestructible to you. But hopefully all this will sort itself out when she wakes up. Goodness knows you two could use some stress free time. Maybe you guys should postpone ---“
“No, we’re set. Besides, it’s always been her favorite holiday. Ever since I’ve known her, she’s always been in love with it. That’s what we were looking at before your wedding even. I need to know that Becca will be able to just continue on as she had been without having to worry with changing things around.”
Patrick looked about on the edge of tears, and Cat felt infinitely sorry for him. After all, he had woken up to find his fiancée unconscious having over-dosed on sleeping pills that apparently he had no idea she was even taking. That would be rough for anyone to deal with. Not to mention already being a little worn by the wedding preparations.
“Have you had anything to eat today, Trick?” Cat was worried about Patrick not taking care of himself while worried over Becca, and obviously took it upon herself to make sure that he didn’t get sick himself.
Patrick turned to Cat with a blank look before pausing for a moment. Had he eaten today? “Um, I honestly don’t know. I’m a mess, Cat. Forgive me?” Patrick gave Cat a pleading look, hoping that she would forgive his panicked nature.
“Oh, shut up, Trick. Don’t worry about it. But now I’m going to go grab something from the canteen for you. I’ll be right back.” Cat turned and walked out of the room, waiting until she had walked around the corner and completely out of sight before wiping at the tears streaming down her face and pulling out her cell phone, instantly dialing Ryan’s number, as he had gone to let the other boys know after he hadn’t been allowed back.
Patrick nodded numbly, not even thinking about his own health or such, he was so worried over Becca. As Cat left the room, he stood and sat lightly on the edge of the bed, leaning over and brushing a light kiss across her forehead. He felt the tears well up again, and took a few calming breaths to try and keep from breaking down. After all, the last thing he needed was to break down and end up hurting her more than she already was.
“Doodlebug, wake up for me, please. I don’t know what happened to cause this, but if I can fix it, babe, I promise I will. Just wake up and let me see your smile and the light in your eyes.” Patrick laid his head down beside hers after leaving a kiss on her cheek, whispering in her ear. “Forever and always, Doodle.”
