"I don’t wanna forget the present is a gift,
And I don’t wanna take for granted the time you may have here with me,
‘Cause Lord only knows another day is not really guaranteed."

"So, how's she doing?" Kelly asked as she got into the car. She had had a meeting that morning that she couldn't get out of with her record company, so Carrie had gone to the hospital to keep Alex company.
"She's really worn down," Carrie frowned, pulling the car onto the road, heading back to the hospital.
"Did she ask why I wasn't there?"
"Yea, but I told her you had to work, and that you'd be there as soon as possible. She understood Kell, don't worry."
"How long does it take to get there?" Kelly asked, squirming in her seat as they stopped at a red light.
"Fifteen minutes, depending on traffic," Carrie replied patiently.
"That long?"
"Yea."
"There aren't any short cuts?"
"No, sorry."
"How long is the red light? Damn it."
"Kell," Carrie said sternly.
"Yea?" she asked, turning to face her, being caught completely off guard by a pair of lips pressing firmly against her own, Carrie's hand on the back of her neck. They broke apart, the Texan completely dazed.
"Ok, now, chill," Carrie had to fight not to laugh at the look on Kelly's face. "It was either that or slapping you, so you know..."
"I prefer your method," Kelly nodded, taking a calming breath.

"You want to go in by yourself?" Carrie asked, rubbing Kelly's arms comfortingly.
"Yea, if you don't mind," she nodded.
"Of course not, go ahead. I'm gonna go see who I can find to hang out with in the game room," Carrie gave her a gentle smile, pulling her into a hug.
Kelly smiled back appreciatively as they pulled apart, watching as Carrie walked away. She turned to the door that led to Alex's hospital room, slowly turning the door knob and walking in.
Kelly took a deep breath as she closed the door before turning to face Alex. The small girl was sound asleep in bed, her chest rising and falling heavily, a breathing tube in her nose, an iv that Kelly had come to know from volunteering as a morphine drip was attached to her thin arm.
She bit down hard on her bottom lip, fighting the tears that were forming as she walked over to the hospital bed, squeezing Alex's hand carefully. She watched as her eyes slowly opened.
"Hey munchkin," Kelly smiled, bending down to kiss her forehead.
"Hey Kelly," Alex replied slowly.
"How they're treating you?"
"The keep sticking me," she frowned as Kelly pulled up a chair so she could sit next to her.
"They're just trying to help you feel better," Kelly assured her. "How are you feeling? Any pain?"
"No," she shook her head. "I'm just tired."
"Yea, they say that's a side affect of the medicine."
"I'm scared," she whispered.
"I know sweetie," Kelly sighed, cradling her face. "I wish I knew what to say to make this better."
"I got a surprise for you," Alex smiled, her dull eyes trying to hold the slightest spark.
"A surprise?" Kelly grinned. "Like what?"
"Well, if I told you it wouldn't be a surprise."
"True," Kelly laughed softly, her heart tearing at how happy Alex seemed.
"You want it now?"
"Well, of course."
Alex nodded, trying to sit up.
"Whoa, whoa," Kelly said, jumping from her chair, laying her back down. "You just stay there. I'll get it. Tell me where it's at."
Alex frowned.
"Munchkin, it's ok. I just don't want you to wear yourself out, but I know that you can get it yourself, don't worry."
Alex nodded, "It's in that drawer right there."
Kelly opened the drawer that she pointed to, pulling out a purple gift bag, "What's this?"
"You're surprise, duh," she reminded.
"You got me a gift?"
"Well, when I was you're house, I saw you're fan room," Alex explained slowly, her voice tired. "And Carrie said that you're fans give you gifts to show how much they appreciate you...and how talented they think you are and stuff."
Kelly nodded, sitting back down in the chair with the gift in her lap.
"So, I wanted to get you a gift to make sure you knew I appreciated you too."
"Sweetheart," Kelly felt herself tearing up as she looked at the fragile girl lying in the bed next to her. "I know you appreciate me; you don't have to give me anything."
"I can take it back," Alex grinned.
Kelly laughed, "No, I want it."
"Open it," she urged excitedly.
"Alright, alright," Kelly laughed, reaching into the bag and pulling out something soft. "You're giving me Mr. Bear? But, Alex..." her voice trailed off as she caught sight of the silver bracelet around the teddy bear's neck. "Munchkin," she whispered, fingering the charm bracelet. "You didn't have to do this."
"But I wanted to," Alex replied, her smile fading. "You don't like it?"
"No, munchkin, of course I do. I love it. It's beautiful," Kelly quickly assured her. She took the bracelet off the teddy bear before hooking it onto her own wrist.
"I paid for it myself," Alex beamed.
"Really?" Kelly smiled, knowing there was no way that were true.
"Yea," she nodded.
"I love it, sweetie, thank you," she stood to be able to lean over and kiss her forehead. She placed Mr. Bear back on her bed, "There you go."
"No," Alex handed the teddy bear back to her. "I want you to keep him."
"But Alex, he's yours, remember? He's supposed to stay with you to protect you."
Alex shrugged, "You need him now."
"Why you say that?"
"Because I'm gonna need him to protect you soon, cause I won't be able to anymore."
Kelly's jaw clenched as tears burned her eyes, "B-but who's gonna protect you?"
"I think I'm gonna be ok," she replied, looking down at her lap nervously. "Ice cream mountains, right?"
"Or course," Kelly nodded, squeezing her hand gently.
Alex smiled weakly.
"It's getting late. How about I let you get some rest, huh?" Kelly asked.
Alex frowned.
"I'll be back here early tomorrow. I don't have any meetings, I promise."
"What about Carrie?"
"Um, actually, I think she does, but she said she'll come in the afternoon like I did today."
"Ok," Alex nodded as Kelly stood, pulling the blankets up further around her, tucking her in. "You really like the gift?"
"It's definitely my favorite gift that any fan has ever gotten me," she smiled.
"Cool beans."
"Cool beans," Kelly nodded, kissing her forehead once more. "Sweet dreams, ok kiddo? Nothing else."
"Ok," Alex smiled, her eyes already growing heavy as Kelly walked out of the room, closing the door softly behind her.

Carrie smiled as she saw Kelly poking her head into the game room, catching her eye.
"Sorry guys," Carrie stood up from the table she was sitting at. "It's time for me to go."
"Aww," she heard someone reply.
"I'll be back soon," she promised.
"When's Kelly coming back?" a small boy asked.
"Um, I'm sure she'll be back soon too guys; she just has a lot going on, but trust me, she really misses y'all," she promised before giving out good-bye hugs.
Carrie walked out of the game room, closing the door behind her. She felt a soft hand slip into her own, and she squeezed it gently, smiling as she noted the teddy bear Kelly was holding tightly in her other arm, the charm bracelet around her wrist.
"How'd it go?"
"Good," she replied softly.
"Where you want to go now?"
"Your place?"
"Yea sure," Carrie nodded, rubbing her thumb soothingly over her hand as they walked down the hall. "You wanna watch a movie or something."
"Sure."
