Gemma closed the door behind her and felt the noise from the party go softer. She needed some peace. She needed some rest in her mind. It had been cramped with thoughts ever since the day that she found out Rob had seen the entry about Mike in her diary. She couldn’t get mad at him – he was so hurt. And she couldn’t really get mad at herself. Could she? She meant what she wrote down. She didn’t anymore though. She was ready to do anything in her power to save her relationship with Rob, but what concerned her was the fact that Rob never answered her question. He never once reassured her that they could work things out. And she needed it. Something in his eyes had been glowing with sadness and no sense of hope. But something inside of her told her not to give up on him yet. Not to give up on the two of them. His words from the day were still ringing in her ear.
---
“I thought that I knew you.”
“And you don’t?”
---
Not even that could he answer? Shghedghed sitting down on the bed that was placed in the middle of the dark room. She closed her eyes and felt her entire body clench as her head was spinning. She should never have tried to drink away the sadness – again. She shook her head slowly and ran her hand through her hair. She was getting tired. Tired of the confusion. Tired. Drunk. She took off her shoes and felt her head crash with the pillow. She closed her eyes again and felt sleep creep over her body – making her lazy.
Mike walked slowly down the hall wanting to find a place where he could get away. For just a single second. Anna had been going on and on about him being distant – and he didn’t know what to say. Gemma? She couldn’t be the reason. There was no way. He knew that he would have to tell Anna that he had been with Gemma back then. But he didn’t want to ruin things – cause he loved her. But it was a fact that Anna would catch on to the desire that was still eating him up. He reached a door and knocked quietly on it to check if anyone was in there. When no answer came, he opened the door and slid into the dark room. The silence surrounding him was calming his nerves down a bit. Why did Rob have to go and hook up with her? And why did he have to love her so much? It only made the situation ten times worse.
He leaned up against the wall and felt the throbbing pain in his head cool down. Sighing out loud, he smoothed his way down the wall and ended up sitting on the floor. He was overwhelmed with the feeling of Gemma. He could almost smell the scent of her being close to him. ‘You have to get real, Mike’ he shouted at himself on the inside. ‘Get her out of you mind…’.
Gemma awoke and shifted slightly in the bed, as she heard a gasp. Someone choking on their own air. Who was in the room? She was trying to stay completely still on the bed as if the person would just disappear if she didn’t do anything. She could hear the breathing now. His breathing. She bid down on her bottom lip and forced her eyes shot. What was he doing in here? She quietly turned her head to look in the direction where the breathing was coming from. She couldn’t see him. Her eyes were still not able to focus on anything because of the state she was in. Drunk and still half asleep. Is he expecting me to say anything? The dizzy feeling slowly took over again and she grabbed on tight to the sheets. A sigh exited her and she heard his breathing react to it again. The silence was killing her.
Mike heard the sound of the sheets moving and quickly moved his hand over his mouth. Could that be her? If it was… what was she doing here? He moved both his hands up to his hair, pulling slightly on it. This wasn’t happening. He didn’t know how to cope with it. What was she expecting him to say? He found himself breathing heavily from the tension that was hanging in the air. He could tell that she knew someone was in the room – cause she was all of a sudden very quiet. Almost too quiet. He could hardly hear her breath. He cleared his throat and heard the sound of her body move against the sheets as if he had startled her.
“Gemma?” His voice cracked and he pulled on his hair again as he placed his head between his knees.
“Yes?” Her voice was filled with anticipation and she sounded as though she almost didn’t allow herself to breathe.
“You are alone in here, right?” Mike didn’t want to ask, but had to know.
“Yeah.” She chuckled lightly at his remark but was soon enveloped by the tense silence hanging over them.
“Good.” Mike was slowly hitting himself on the head with his hands for saying that. ‘Good!?’. He couldn’t believe what he had just said. ‘Good!?’.
“Why is that good?” Gemma was starting to feel really uncomfortable in the dark room. Not being able to see him. Just hearing him. His breathing. It was bringing back the feelings in the pit of her stomach. And she was fighting an inner battle to resist them. She wasn’t even sure why she was feeling this way when in fact, she wanted Rob to be sitting there right now. Not Mike. She wanted Rob.
“I don’t know. Just is.” Mike tried to hide the feeling of excitement. “Never mind.” He slowly got up and turned to face the door. But he didn’t walk out of it. He wasn’t ready to. He wasn’t ready to walk out on a chance to get these lusting emotions out of his system.
“Never mind?” She was now sitting up in bed. “Never mind what?”
“I don’t know.” Mike was still standing with his back to her.
“What is wrong, Mike? Hang on, I’m just going to turn on some light.” Gemma moved her hand towards the nightstand, but within seconds she felt a hand stopping hers. His hand.
“No! Don’t.” His voice was almost pleading her, so she let her hand drop to her lap. She could sense him standing right in front of her. Close. And all she could think of was the fact that he wasn’t Rob. She felt the bed weighing down to her left as he was sitting down next to her. He was so close. She didn’t hate it. She needed the comforting that she was being given by him being close to her. She just needed it from someone else. She didn’t know what to say to him, and she could sense that he was just as confused. Why was she feeling this tense, if she didn’t care? But she did care. The memories from the past were rushing back to her, making her flush. She remembered how good she felt that night – and how empty she was feeling now. Maybe he could change it. She shook her head slowly and corrected that thought. Rob could change it. She got up from the bed and heard him sigh.
“I need to go and find Rob. You understand, don’t you?” She was begging him to not make this harder than it already was.
“Yeah. Of course.” She could hear a hint of hesitance in his voice and frowned slightly. She shrugged not being able to deal with the feeling he was bringing back to her, and walked towards the door.
“I’ll see you, Mike.”
“Wait!” His voice was softly demanding her and she turned around, still facing nothing but darkness. She waited for him to speak, but felt a pair of soft lips on hers instead. Confused and warm inside she pulled away, only to get gently manoeuvred up against the door as his lips found hers again. The lack of words exchanged between the two felt comforting for them both. Silently they were having thoughts. About who they were with. Or whom they wanted to be with.
