Chapter Eight: When Hell Meets Its Match
On the set of the new Orlando Bloom Movie, Eve discovered the true meaning of Fan girls. Thousands upon thousands of girls were screaming in her ears, making her go just about deaf. They were all waving around banners and signs with his face on it. She found this all just a little bit freaky. The blonde would have left if she was not there for a specific reason. Hopefully, she would be able to get to Orlando.
Once up at the front of the crowd, but still behind enemy lines, she spotted him. She actor was walking with a bunch of make-up people. Eve smirked and put her fingers to her mouth. She blew, making a REALLY loud whistling sound. Orlando turned and waved as Eve passed under the ropes.
“What’re you doing here, Eve?” He asked her once the other people were gone.
“I came to talk about Karen and about Black Week.” She told him.
“I was going to ask you about that. It’s something more than just her father’s death, I assume.” He turned to her, making them stop walking.
Eve nodded, “I’ll explain it all over coffee or something. Can you leave here?”
“Sure. Let’s go.” They left the scene and headed to a coffee shop. That was when Orlando learned about some things that not even Mike knew. It was that dark part of Karen’s past that Eve wished she could forget.
It was the aftermath.

The smell of tea woke Mike up. He turned over onto his side and looked up to see his angel. She smiled warmly at him and sipped the tea in her mug. On her lap lay Sora fast asleep and purring. Oh how he wished to be that cat. Sora got so much attention from the one person he wanted. The one person he knew he could never have. Mike looked up at her again to discover something strange.
Her sleeve had rolled down when she had lifted the mug to her lips. There, on her arm, were marks. They looked like darkened lines that started from her wrist and ended at her elbow. He narrowed his eyes and sat up, taking her arm in the process to look at it more closely.
“Hey! What’re you doing!?” She shouted and made Sora jump off her lap.
“What’s this!?” He pointed at the scars.
She scoffed and pulled her arm away from him, “I….. used to cut myself after my dad died.”
“Just cause he left didn’t mean you had to too.” He crossed his arms.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” She stood up.
“Well, I think I do.” He stood too.
“You do not!” She yelled and grabbed her jacket.
Karen jumped down the stairs to her boots near the doorway. Then, she ran out the back door and down the block just to get away from him. Once she felt that she was far enough from the shop, she sat down on a bus bench. She rolled down her sleeve and looked at the scars there. On her other arm, there were scars as well. She put her head into her hands.
“I’m such a fucking idiot! What’s wrong with me!? I run from everything and I bring myself down! Why!?” She sniffed, rubbing away tears, “Is this your punishment, Dad? To leave me all by my lonesome with so many stupid problems?”
“You’re not alone, anymore.” She turned to see Mike. Karen jumped up to run away again, but he grabbed her wrists. He yanked her around to look at him
She cried harder, “Why!? Why do you want to help me like this!?” She demanded.
“Because, Karen.” He hugged her, “Just because.”
They stayed like that for a long time, not moving or talking. Just standing there in front of the bus bench in their pajamas. Karen looked up at him as her tears dried. He looked so determined. He looked like he never wanted to let her go. She adverted her eyes back to the ground as a slight blush took over her face. Was the cold getting to her?
Finally, Mike took her hand and led her from that spot. She felt like such a child being hauled away like that. All she did on the way back was drag her feet behind him as he continuously pulled her down the street. He needed to take care of her now.
It was as if realization hit him square on the forehead. Karen had lost everything in the past on the dates that were passing this week. She needed help and reassurance; a shoulder to cry on so to speak. He would be the one to dry her tears and make it all better. Just one more day to go and she would be right as rain again. God, where was Eve when you needed her?
“I have class today.” He stated as soon as they were inside her apartment.
“So?” She sniffed, still upset about before.
Mike gave her a fresh cup of tea, “So, I’ll be leaving you alone for a while. Will you be okay?”
“God, Mike. I’m not a fucking kid anymore. You don’t have to shelter me and help me through all the shit that brings me down.” She looked down at the tea, uncertain of her words.
He lifted her chin to look him square in the eyes, “But, I want to.” Then he pressed his lips against hers for a moment. Before he figured she would slap him for it though, he pulled away and left the apartment in her few seconds of shock.
An expressionless look lingered on Karen’s face for a long time after shock left her. She curled up on the couch and sipped at her tea. Thoughts of the past week and a half swam around in her mind. She felt so lost in the tide of all the things that were happening. It seemed utterly familiar, this feeling. She had felt this before.
The image of that horrid night passed through her mind the second her eyes closed on her. She had been working with one of her dad’s employees that night. Of course, she was in a huff about that morning. The other worker was in the back, taking care of the garbage, while Karen was sorting out some CDs on the racks. That was when she heard the noise that made her heart stop beating.
Having no idea what that sound could be, she ran up the stairs to see her father on the floor. Blood spilled out from the bullet hole in his chest. She screamed and cried out to him, begging him not to die. All he could do was mutter how sorry he was, that if he could take it all back, he would. She knelt beside him, holding his hand and pleading for him not to close his eyes, to hold onto her hand a little longer. The jeans she was wearing became soiled in blood. The sleeves to her long sleeved shirt were also crimson.
The rug was stained as well. Tears mixed with blood. An ambulance came, but she did not want to let go. She knew they could not save him now. He was gone, he had shut his eyes to the world for the last time. She was abruptly woken by a knock at the door to her residence. Karen’s eyes refocused as Eve walked in.
“How you holding up, sweet-heart?” She sat down next to her best friend.
“I’ve been better.” She paused, “Mike discovered my dirty little secret.”
“Ah. So the skeletons are out of the closet.” Eve grinned.
“Yeah. Oh well.”
“C’mon. Let’s go out tonight or something. Orlando’ll pay for it all. He’s outside.” She grinned again, hugging her friend so she would say yes.
“Alright. Lemme get dressed first.” She threw on some black jeans, but didn’t change her shirt. A brief note to Mike was left for him to find.
They were off! Orlando took them to exotic places like clubs and cafes. Eve was happy just to get her friend out of the house. Everyone was entitled to have fun, especially if they were as depressed as Karen. They dashed off to see the town and paint it red, but nothing could cheer up the musician. Orlando and Eve were getting desperate.
He decided to go for the crazy side of fun.
“Let’s change your look a little, Karen. I’m sure that’ll make you feel different.” He smiled.
The limo stopped in front of a big building. The three of them walked in and looked around. Orlando had brought them to a tattoo parlor. In the back, the people who worked there did body piercing as well. Eve looked around in awe and then dragged Karen to the back. She turned to the black haired girl.
“You should get your eyebrow pierced!” She jumped for joy.
Karen shrugged, “Ok….. Whatever you say, Eve.”
Orlando paid for it and she got an eyebrow piercing. Eve looked at the tattoo portion of the shop next. She thought about getting a tattoo and maybe Karen could too? She knew it would hurt, but what the hell? You only live once. So, she sat down and decided to get a chained heart on her lower back. The chains would end on her sides, as if they were wrapping around her.
Karen sat there for a minute and thought of what to get. Then, it dawned on her to get something different. A Fallen Angel. Was that not what her father used to call her? Wings would be perfect for an angel. They needed to be gray and raggy though, like she had truly fallen from grace.
About six hours later, they left the shop and went home. It was about two o’clock in the morning and Karen was exhausted. Eve decided to sleep over, but Orlando could not. He had some sort of thing to do the next day. He dropped them off at the music shop and they said their thank-yous. He bid them both goodnight and was off.
Up in her apartment, the two girls were looking at each other’s tattoos. Neither of them could believe that they had gone and got tattoos. Karen applied some type of liquid to her piercing so it would not become infected. They changed into pajamas and sat around to talk. Around three, they heard a noise downstairs that sounded like someone was there. The two of them went down there to find a burglar. The man turned to them as they almost instantly spotted the pistol in his hands. He kept it on them.
((AN: I CAN’T SPELL!!!!! AAAAHHH!!!!))
“Which one of you owns this shop!?” He demanded from the two girls gawking at him. Karen raised her hand slowly. He motioned her to the cash register with the gun.
“Karen, wait!” Eve stepped forward. The guy turned back to Eve, pointing the gun at her now.
“Don’t move!” The blonde stood still again and he turned his full attention to Karen as she began to open the register.
Unable to watch her friend get robbed, Eve moved in to grab the gun. The cash register dinged open as the robber was wrestling on the floor with the blonde. The store owner took some steps towards them, hoping to break up the fight. But then, the gun went off twice. Karen jumped as the noise rang through her ears like the night her father died.
Karen screamed in fear.
The robber stood up to reveal a bleeding Eve on the floor. The world slowed down as Karen’s heart stopped beating. Her friend was on the floor, two bullet holes in her chest, and her life spilling from the wounds. She couldn’t catch her breath as she stared down. Tears then exploded from her eyes as she collapsed down next to her only family, her best friend. She held her friend’s head up to her chest.
“Eve!!! You can’t do this to me! You’re not allowed! I don’t want to be alone! Can’t you see that!?” A neighbor who lived on the block walked into the shop with a rifle. He had the burglar at gunpoint. The boy dropped his pistol as Karen sobbed again, “I’m so scared of being alone…..”
