Day 14
Cone had stayed up all night trying to figure out what the kidnapper wanted in return for his son. The cops had given him and Paige a few days before they had to question them not wanting any hysterics in the station. Cone hadn’t slept since the night Raiden was taking and knew that he wasn’t going to sleep until he had his son in his arms once again. He looked down at his wife who at this moment had her back to him while sleeping on her side. She hardly ever slept on her side. Paige had cried herself to sleep only an hour before, she was doing that more often now, but Cone knew it was only a matter of time before she woke crying once more. She was beginning to scare Cone when she woke in the middle of the night screaming for Raiden sometimes acted as if their son was in the next room. He was beginning to think that Paige had suffered from emotional shock. He couldn’t understand why anyone would want to kidnap Raiden. What had he done to the world that made it take his only son away, hell his only child? Was it some whacked out fan, maybe someone closer to him? He suspected everyone, everything. He didn’t want to understand all he wanted was Raiden. He kept thinking that any minute Raiden was going to walk in their room and hop on the bed with his Alvin doll in his hands, or start crying in the middle of the night like he always had, but there were no sounds from the other room except that of the wind hollowing through the broken window that had only been mended for the time being with trash bags. Paige began moving about beside him. He soon noticed that she was sweating. She must be having a nightmare about the kidnapping again. He thought to himself as Paige continued to squirm. She had the same dream every time she managed to fall asleep.
“No,” she mumbled softly. “NO!” She screamed as she sat up quicker then lightning. Cone reached for her, to comfort her, but she stepped out of bed and ran into the other room. He followed her not knowing what she was going to do. She was looking about the room frantically. “Where is he? What’s happened here? No! He has to be here? No!” She screamed. Cone walked towards her and she acted as if he wasn’t there. He realized that she was still in her nightmare. He walked towards her and pulled her into his arms.
“Paige, wake up Raiden’s not here. You’re dreaming.” He whispered to her as she hit him across the face. She was still in her dream world. He had to wake her if she didn’t wake herself soon.
“No! Raiden is here! He has to be!” She stated as her knees buckled beneath her once more just like they had the night Raiden was taken. She had woken from her truthful nightmare. Cone held her up and managed to get her sitting on the edge of the bed. “Jay?” She looked over at him noticing the look of relieve upon his face. “How did I get in here?” She asked. Cone replaced his arms around her as she laid her head on his shoulder.
“It was really weird. You had me scared there. You were like reliving it Paige. Reliving all of it.” He stated as she began to cry once more. He couldn’t bite back his tears either. Raiden was really gone and there was nothing neither of them could do. Their son was truly gone. They soon fell asleep, their tears acting as a sleep aide, on the bed where Raiden had been last.
Paige and Cone walked into the station hand-in-hand trying to get through all of their living nightmares together. They walked to the front next and then were escorted to a small room where they could be questioned. They soon entered a grey room with a table and a bunch of chairs. Cone pulled a chair out for Paige as she sat and he then took one himself. There were several officers in the room with them and what seemed to be some sort of detective. He looked at Paige first.
“Mrs. McCaslin?” He asked softly catching Paige’s attention. She looked over at him, her face tired from crying. “Does this mean anything to you?” He asked pulling out the letter once more. Paige shook her head.
“I don’t know what it means! I’ve already told you that! Some freak stole my child and all you idiots can do is ask me if this letter means anything to me!” She screamed standing. Cone managed to get her sitting again as she broke into tears. She had written the letter down before and kept it with her trying to think of what it meant. The detective sighed.
“We’re going to find your son, but we can’t unless we know what this letter means. It’s all we have to go off of right now. This letter and your mother’s statement.” Paige turned back to the officer and Cone looked at him confused.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Cone asked. He had forgotten that Mrs. Williams had seen the kidnapper.
“We know the person who took your son was a man. Mrs. Williams saw the kidnapper when he took Raiden. We’ve posted his description all over San Antonio and surrounding areas. We’re doing the best we can. Now you need to help us. What does he want from you?” The detective asked. Paige locked eyes with Cone. She didn’t have any idea. Now her son’s life seemed to rest in her own hands and she couldn’t think clearly at all.
“Money? Maybe some sort of fame? I don’t know. What do I have that’s so damn valuable? They took the thing that I treasure above all else!” Cone took her in his arms again.
“Look, so basically it’s some fucked up fan who’s decided to take my son?” Cone asked in disbelief. The detective shook his head. He didn’t know anymore then Cone and Paige. The next few days were going to be interesting. Cone stood a few moments later and helped Paige out of the station. They were headed back to her parents house and they were both silent the entire way there. When they arrived they noticed another car in the driveway. Paige was the first to reach the door and when she walked in Deryck greeted her.
“Paige, hi, I, uh, wanted to know if I could help.” He turned back when Steve and Dave walked up behind him. “If we could help.” Cone walked in behind Paige.
“Deryck, there’s nothing any of us can do. All we can do is pray.” She stated turning back to Cone and hid her face in his chest. Deryck then pulled apiece of paper from his pocket and tapped Paige on the shoulder.
“I found this when we first got here. It was laying on the doorstep and it’s addressed to you.” Deryck replied holding out the letter. Paige took it and opened it as fast as she possibly could. It was another ransom letter written again with letters from magazines.
Dear Mommy,
I know you know what I want
I will never be caught
What I seek is close to you
What I wish is to leave only one clue
Time will reveal my plan
You must wait with your chosen clan
Soon you’ll see that I am in the right
Your son will become my guiding light
You must make your selection
Before I choose to mention
The whereabouts of Raiden so true
We’ll soon see if his blood is red or blue.
Paige passed out. She couldn’t handle anymore. Cone was on the floor next to her almost the instant that she had passed out.
“Paige!” He screamed terrified. “Deryck go and get some water or something! Quick!” Deryck ran from the room an came back with a glass of cold water in his hands. He splashed it in Paige’s face and she sprang back to life. “Paige! God, are you alright?” Cone asked still worried about her. She handed Cone the letter and he read it and felt like passing out himself. “We gotta get this to the police.” He helped her up and they headed back to the station for another trip with the detective. The kidnapper was going to kill their son soon, but was also going to reveal what he wanted. Time would reveal his plan.
