Daniel was taken aback, his mouth open and eyes widened in disbelief. He had not given a thought as to what would come next until that very moment…hearing that he was condemned to an eternity of torment would have been enough to make his heart stop, had it still been beating. Steven let out a fresh burst of laughter at Daniel’s shocked face, smirking triumphantly at the blonde man.
“Awww….doesn't the fallen angel want to come play with me…?” Steven taunted, positively beaming at the news that Daniel would be joining him in hell. Daniel was livid; he looked like he was ready to attack Steven again right then and there. It was only Darren’s arms around him, and the shorter man’s gentle pleadings that made Daniel restrain himself.
“Daniel…” Darren whimpered, burying his face in the taller man’s chest, gripping his shirt tightly, never wanting to let go. “No…Please, don’t leave me Daniel! Please don’t leave me again!” Darren whispered, “Y-You can’t!” Darren’s voice sounded so broken and frightened, Daniel’s guilt washed over him a million fold as he stared down into the azure eyes of his soul mate. Darren crushed his body against Daniel’s, breaking eye contact. “I won’t let you…I won’t let you go…” Darren whispered forcefully into Daniel’s ear, a few stray tear drops finding their way onto Daniel’s shoulder.
“Please, Mr. Hayes, Mr. Jones, it is best if you separate before we proceed.” The angel demanded softly, growing steadily on Darren’s already shattered nerves.
“No way.” Darren murmured, refusing to pry himself away from his lover.
“Mr. Hayes, I know you are upset but we really must proceed, now please, step away from Mr. Jones.” The angel’s voice grew harder, more demanding.
“I said NO Way!” Darren spoke louder, more forcefully, refusing to move even as Daniel tried to coax him into letting go. “I’m not letting you take him away from me!”
“Darren, I know this is difficult to accept, but the rules cannot be broken. Daniel’s sins are unforgivable and he cannot be let into the gates of heaven. Now please, do as I say and step away from him!”
“NO! YOU’RE NOT TAKING HIM FROM ME!” Darren shrieked, his eyes flashing dangerously at the angel, his teeth bared as his nails dug into Daniel’s arm with the force of his grip. Darren’s lividness caused the angel to take a step backwards, reassessing the situation. He thought he understood human emotions quiet perfectly, having studied them for centuries, but he had not expected this. When faced with such finality, it was only human nature to succumb to the great forces from beyond…but Darren was not budging…it was mind-boggling. The angel tried again.
“Darren, please….step towards me, I will take you to the light place, it is a good place, you will like it there, everything is so beautiful and peaceful. Please, come.” Darren did not move.
“Not. Without. Daniel.” He said through gritted teeth.
“Darren, we have been patient up until now, but please, we can not allow this to go any further.”
“We?! Who’s we! The only person I see here is you! What gave you the right to decide who gets to go to heaven and who gets to go to hell!! It’s not fair! Daniel IS good, I don’t give a FUCK what you or any body else says!!”
“Darren, please, listen to me—”
“No, YOU listen to ME! You keep saying that you guys now all, well then how come we died! You said yourself it wasn’t supposed to happen! So come on, answer me! Why did you let it Happen?! How is it that we are being punished for YOUR mistake?!” Darren demanded, not wanting to listen to any more of the angel’s reasons for why his lover was condemned, wanting some answers that didn’t have the words ‘it’s too complicated for you to understand,’ at the beginning of them. “You think you can just toy with people’s lives like this, but I won’t let you! You bastards think you can—”
“THAT’S ENOUGH!” The angel’s voice no longer sounded sweet, or complacent. There was an edge of darkness and power to it. The voice was accompanied by a blast of energy, strong enough to rip Darren from Daniel’s arms and throw him into the opposite wall, falling in a heap on the ground.
“DARREN!” Daniel screamed, instantly panicking at the sight of Darren’s prone form, he tried to run towards his lover but the same force held him back, throwing him into the opposite wall. Daniel’s body crunched against the wall before he fell to the ground as well, feeling winded, but otherwise unscathed, looking across the room to Darren who had a look of equal bewilderment written upon his features at the fact that he was uninjured as well. It was so strange, to not have to worry about broken bones or pain anymore, at least physical pain anyway…but Daniel figured it was all part of being dead.
“Daniel!” Darren gasped from across the room, and Daniel could see that he was struggling to do something, but not finding the strength. “I-I can’t move! Daniel!” Darren cried, pushing against the force that was keeping him away from Daniel. Daniel tried to move closer to Darren, only to find the task impossible on his side as well. Darren turned to glare at the angel, his entire body shaking in rage. In the background Steven was laughing, laughing hard at the amusement of the situation that only he saw.
“SILENCE!!” The angel’s voice was harsh once more, almost demonic, and abruptly the laughter stopped. Steven was startled, he tried to speak but no sound came out, his eyes grew wide then as he began to panic, screaming in rage at the angel though it would do no good.
“There, that is much better, don’t you agree,” He turned then, smiling complacently at Darren and Daniel. Darren’s glare only grew worse at the angel’s almost mocking smile. Darren continued to push against the force that was holding him back, trying with all his might to break through, to get to Daniel.
“Daniel! Come on! Keep trying! I won’t give up! I won’t let them take you from me! I won’t leave you! Please, don’t leave me again!’ Darren called across the room, groaning in exhaustion as he shoved against the invisible wall blocking his path.
“Darren, I can’t, I can’t break through!” Daniel called back, feeling as though he were miles away from his lover, instead of the few yards that actually separated them.
“Let us go god damn it!!” Darren demanded, desperate now, needing to feel his lover in his arms in order to e sure everything would be ok.
“Darren, this is for your own good….you will see that soon enough.” The angel began, striding over to where Darren struggled and taking him by the arm, “Please, come with me now, to the light place….forget all of you worldly troubles….you will be happy there, I promise—”
“Let go of me!” Darren shrieked, as if the angel’s touch burned his arm, shoving the golden-haired, winged man back and away from him. “I’m not going without Daniel, you hear me?! I won’t! I won’t leave him!” Darren ground out, stubborn to a fault, and determined to reach his lover, straining against the invisible force, his face contorted from the stress that he was causing his body as he tried to force his way through.
“Darren, this is madness, listen to me! You must come with me now, it is time for you to enter heaven, Heaven Darren, don’t you want to go to heaven?” The angel smiled encouragingly.
All of the sudden, the first door, on the far left of the wall with the three doors, began vibrating, the seams of the door glowing a brilliant golden color, the door was begging to be opened. Darren felt his spirit being pulled towards the opening door and he began to panic.
“NO! No I don’t want to go! Don’t make me! Daniel!” Darren cried, his body being forced backwards and towards the door.
“Darren!” Daniel all but sobbed, feeling his heart shatter as Darren was moved towards the open door and heaven. He wanted to protest, to scream for this to stop….but he couldn’t bring himself to do so, not when it would mean depriving his lover of eternal happiness just because he was stupid and selfish and wanted to be near him. No, he would not protest against what was happening, he knew why it had to be like this…and he hoped Darren would understand too. “I love you Darren!” and with that statement he stopped struggling to reach Darren, collapsing onto the floor of the white room, broken. Darren’s eyes widened…he couldn’t believe what he was seeing; Daniel was letting him go…
“Coward!!” He cried, face flushed from his struggles, angry at the angel, angry at Daniel, “Get up! Daniel! Please!” Darren screamed, his body moving of its own accord, towards the great golden-edged door…”Please! I don’t want to leave Daniel! Heaven WILL BE Hell for me if I can’t be with him! You hear me! I’d rather go to hell if it means I can stay with him!!” Darren screamed. And just like that his body froze where it was. He was floating slightly, his entire being radiating a kind of azure aura that was somehow managing to stop him from going through the door. “I WON’T GO!!”
The angel’s eyes grew impossibly wide at that, Darren’s spirit was strong, and he was very stubborn. Yet the angel could not even begin to fathom the idea that somebody would choose hell over the place of eternal bliss.
“Darren, no!!” Daniel shouted, shocked as well. He was willing to accept the fact that he was eternally damned, but he would not allow Darren to be as well, “You can’t!”
“Daniel, I won’t leave you!” Darren declared. The azure force surrounding him grew darker as his determination to reach Daniel climaxed. “I………Love………..You…..!” he forced the words out, it seemed as if his body was being drained of it’s spirit, yet still Darren tried, his levitating body managing to move against the force that was supposed to keep him away from Daniel. “Won’t……………..LEAVE!” Darren stammered, his eyes shut tight in concentration, ignoring every thing around him except Daniel, focusing on reaching Daniel.
“Darren! What are you doing?! Stop this at once, this is totally unacceptable!” The angel was growing anxious, having never seen such persistence. The sheer power that Darren was exerting was enough to frighten the heavenly being.
Daniel had tears in his eyes…he felt his himself swell with pride for his lover as well as shame for himself. He had always known that Darren was the strong one. The raven-haired beauty may not have been able to pack a punch…but he was smart, and kind, and compassionate in a way that Daniel only hoped he could be, and he never ceased to amaze the blonde when times got tough and his will-power shown through.
“Darren! You can do it baby, come on! That’s it! Just a little further!” Daniel cheered his love on, he felt ashamed that he could not do what Darren was doing….but that didn't matter….just a few more feet and Darren would be in his arms once again.
“Stop! Stop this now!” The angel tried again, rushing to Darren, the aura sending him backwards, colliding into a bewildered Steven.
“……..DAAAAAAANNNNNNNNIIIIEEEEELLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!” Darren groaned, the color draining from his features from the exertion of his spirit. Even his once shiny ebony hair now seemed dull and grey, but the power of the aura surrounding him only intensified…the entire room darkening to a neon blue color as he strained….Daniel watched his eyes shining with tears as he silently prayed. The angel was dumbstruck and Steven was amused by the pretty colors, though he could not make a sound.
“Daniel!” Darren breathed, breaking through the last bit of force field, his body going limp as he fell into Daniel’s arms, the blue immediately fading away, leaving the room stark and white once again.
“Darren!” Daniel gasped, falling backwards slightly from the force of the smaller body colliding with his. He knelt to the ground, holding Darren gently in his arms. Darren’s eyes stayed shut for several long moments, and for an agonizing instant Daniel was afraid he’d lost him again. Then all at once, the eyelids fluttered open to reveal watery sapphire orbs.
“Daniel,” Darren smiled dreamily, cupping Daniel’s worried face in his smooth pale hand. “Told you…..I wouldn’t…leave…”
“Dazza….You’d risk hell for me?” Daniel murmured lovingly, stroking Darren’s grayed hair from his face.
“I’d risk more than that.” Darren replied, gripping the back of Daniel’s neck in his palm, pulling the blonde’s head down so their lips could brush.
When they kissed, it was as if they had been struck by lightning, electricity shot through them as they were once again connected, the silvery light flooding the room, making it impossible for any of the inhabitants to see anything. Darren didn't care though; he just kept kissing Daniel, hungrily, lovingly…letting everything else fall away as they were engulfed in the warm silvery light.
“Enough of this….I have seen enough…..” A deep powerful voice filled the entire room, at once making the inhabitants of the room stop what they were doing. The angel instantly fell to his knees, bowing in respect. Steven felt tears streaming down his cheeks as he opened his mouth in silent awe. Darren broke his kiss with Daniel as both men stared up to the source of the voice, the bright white light blinding them, preventing them from seeing beyond. “They will not be separated!” Darren felt tears staining his cheeks though at that moment he could not be happier. Daniel, too, felt his heart swell with warmth and forgiveness.
“But, My Lord, he has been judged and deemed unworthy!” The angel protested, confused, never having dealt with a situation quite like this.
“That is for me to decide.” The voice boomed, sending shivers down the spines of everyone in the small room. “The rip in time shall be mended.”
“But, My Lord, it would be wrong for you to soil your hands with such trivial matters! Let what has been done lay in stillness. Think not of the wickedness of spirits.”
“My children are not born wicked in the Earthly realm. Evil is not born of man; rather it is brought upon man in madness. What was not meant to be shall be no more!”
The silvery white light that had engulfed them now seemed almost oppressive as Darren and Daniel struggled to hold on to one another. The sound of rushing wind blocked out all other noise, as an immense power filled the room. Darren shut his eyes tightly, scared, not really sure of what was happening, holding onto Daniel with all his might as the wind whipped through his grayed hair. Daniel held on tightly to his lover as well, fearing the worst despite what the powerful voice had said, holding Darren’s head to his chest tightly.
“I LOVE YOU!!!” He screamed over the wind, kissing the smaller man’s forehead.
“LOVE YOU!” Darren screamed into his chest, clinging to him. The wind deafening both men, pressing against them, making them feel as if they were about to explode and implode at the same time, the world spinning at light speeds around them.
And then all at once the middle door of the room opened, and the wind rushed out, the door slamming shut in its wake.
The angel sighed to himself, the two spirits that were Darren and Daniel were gone, yet Steven’s spirit remained.
“Surely you are not planning on sending this one back as well?” The angel asked, the warm silvery light still present.
Though the voice did not answer, instead the third door opened, the tunnel black and cold and utterly empty. Wind began to surround Steven now as well, he squeaked in protest, unable to make any other sound, his big brown eyed wide and terrified. In a flash of light his body exploded, leaving the spirit behind, black and blood-stained from all the torment he had caused to others in his time on earth.
“A spirit is not born wicked.” The deep powerful voice spoke again, the wind picking up, swirling around the floating mass that was Steen’s spirit, the black and blood-stained smoke-like matter, swirling up into a large ball in the center of the wind. And once again, the wind blew through the door to hell, taking Steven’s spirit with it, the door slamming shut after it passed through. Where the bulk of Steven’s spirit was, there floated a tiny blue orb. No larger than a marble, it was al that was left of the pure spirit that had been inside Steven.
The angel gasped, wide-eyed, holding his hand out for the spirit to float to him.
“It’s time for you to come home now, Steven.” The voice boomed, and the first door once again opened to a blindingly white welcoming light. The tiny orb of a spirit left the angel’s hand then, floating through the gate to heaven, and his second chance.
“And what of the other two?” The angel asked, a faint smile on his face at the sight of the spirit entering the light realm.
“When their time truly comes, they will be judged…” The voice answered in all of its authority.
“Until then all they can do is prey that they don’t make the same mistakes.” The angel mused, his smile growing as he too entered the warm light of the first door. The door shut again, leaving the plain white room uninhabited once more.
