Chapter 8
“I know it’s around here somewhere…..” Hae mumbled to herself as she sifted through the top drawer of her dresser.
Adrienne and Soo had positioned themselves on Hae’s bed as they waited for her to find her spare swimsuit. Adrienne idly traced small circles with her fingertip on the comforter as Soo continued on about Jae.
“He really is sweet, even though he can be childish sometimes. When he was trying to get me to go out with him, he left a flower on my doorstep every day until I said yes. It was really cute!” She beamed, clasping her hands together. Adrienne nodded and smiled, “He seems like a really nice guy, you and Hae are both very lucky to have been able to snag them. I imagine that they had their own little fan following, considering they both are easy on the eyes.”
Hae nodded, throwing a wad of socks behind her head. “Yeah, I don’t know how we got “chosen” so to speak…I mean, I didn’t pay any attention to Junsu before he started talking to me in class one day.”
“Pffft, Oh please, Hae, you were staked out by his locker every day during our second year of high school.” Soo rolled her eyes as she swung her legs off the bed.
Hae blushed, “Aha! Finally….here Min, try this on. I hope it fits. Sorry about the color, I don’t usually wear black because of how pale my skin is…but you are tanner than I am so, it will look fine, I’m sure.” She said, tossing Adrienne the black two-piece. “You can change in the bathroom if you want; it’s the second door on the right.”
Adrienne nodded slighty as she inspected the suit in her hands. She wasn’t much of a bikini person, considering she always felt too exposed in one. But then again, it was just a few people and not a crowded beach like it had been at home.
“Oh, don’t be self-conscious, Min!” Hae sighed as she placed her hands on her hips, “I know that look….don’t worry, you will look great, Yoochun will fall all over himself…” She finished with a wink before kicking the empty space behind Adrienne, “Scoot!”
“But…I…” Adrienne stumbled as Soo started shoving her out the door. With an exasperated sigh, she entered the bathroom and began to change. She had to admit, once she had it on, it didn’t look too bad. It wasn’t as exposing as she had originally though, which comforted her a little, and she didn’t mind that it was black. She personally thought that black could look really good when worn properly. Wrapping her towel around herself she walked out and immediately heard playful shouts and splashes floating in from the back patio. She wrapped the towel around her a little more snuggly as she stepped through the sliding door onto the concrete.
“Ah, Min, finally, it took you long enough,” Soo shouted from the far end of the pool, “You can throw your towel on that chair over there..see the one with the pink towel…yea that one, it should stay dry over there.” She continued, motioning to her left with her arm.
“The water is nice and warm, you should come in!” Hae smiled as she hopped up the steps of the pool, “I have to go order pizza; are onions and peppers ok with everyone?”
Everyone gave a mindless nod to Hae. It didn’t matter what they said. Hae only like onions and peppers on pizza and if she was ordering…that’s all she would get anyway. Adrienne shifted slightly in her chair and leaned back.
“Aren’t you going to swim?” Changmin asked, “The water is really nice!”
Adrienne peeked her eye open to find that Changmin was standing, dripping wet, next to her. He smiled sweetly before putting his hand over his heart, “I promise!”
Adrienne couldn’t help but relax slightly as she chuckled, “You seemed to have calmed down from the movie theatre. You really had me concerned there for a minute. I thought that you were going to be sick.”
Changmin blushed slightly and rubbed the back of his head, “Yeah well, the thought of eating pizza is comforting for me so, I’m fine now!” He beamed before he was tackled into the pool by Yunho. Adrienne shielded herself from the splash as best she could, but still, unfortunately, got pretty wet…along with her towel.
“Aww man….” She murmered, standing up. “You are a towel! You’re purpose in life is to dry things…” she tossed it on the chair and sighed.
“Well, you are already wet; you might as well swim right?” Yoochun said with a smirk. He had stretched himself out on of the lawn chairs on the other side of the pool. “Well, I suppose, but I don’t see you getting into the pool.” She said, pointing accusingly at him.
“Meh, I will later,” He said, adjusting the baby blue board shorts that Jae had loaned him.
“Hey, Yoochun! Catch!!!” Yunho yelled as he hurtled a foam football towards his friend. Yoochun winced as his face was hit from the water from the toss being shorter than expected.
hmmm, he can’t pass that up….
Adrienne nonchalantly got up and walked around to the other side of the pool, as if she was going to get the ball for herself. Yoochun, shifted out of his chair, “Here, lemme get that for you, since you seem to not want to get anymore wet that you already are.” He squatted down to the concrete and reached into the pool to grab the ball and before he knew it he was gasping for air as he resurfaced…inside the pool.
Adrienne had taken his brief moment of gentlemanliness and used it to her advantage. Once he had crouched down to get the ball, she had given him a swift kick in the butt, sending him flying into the pool.
Yoochun gasped for air as he wiped his hair out of his eyes. “You….what did you do that for?!” he glowered at her.
Adrienne squatted down to meet his eyes, “I told you that you would pay…be lucky that it wasn’t with your life, like I had threatened before.” She smiled smugly as she poked him in the forehead. His face fixed into an annoyed expression, “So much for being nice…” He stated quickly before he grabbed her by the shoulders and yanked her into the pool.
Adrienne didn’t even have time to act before she found herself flailing underwater. Her feet connected with flesh as she frantically made her way to the surface for air.
I hope that was his face that I just kicked
Adrienne gasped for air as she treaded water. “Yoooouuu….” She glared at him.
“Karma karma karma….” He tisked as he rested his arms on the pool’s edge.
“Ok! Pizza is on its way!” Hae announced, returning to the book deck. “I ordered five large ones, which better be enough to feed us all…” she said, looking at Changmin.
Changmin shrugged and grinned, “I offer no guarantees….anyway, it’s getting kind of cold, do you think we could all go into the house or something?” He whined as he jumped from foot to foot trying to warm himself.
“Yeah, that sounds great, “Adrienne said, pulling herself out of the water, “What do you want to do Changmin?”
He shrugged and tapped his finger on his lips, “ I dunno, Hae, what do you have here to do?”
“Uhhh…” she murmered as she thought, “Well, there are always more movies, we have a pool table in the game room….there’s my brother’s video game systems…hmmm I think that’s about it. There might be some random board or card games lying around but…I have no idea where they would be,” she answered, handing Adrienne a fresh towel.
“Ooooo! Video games!!”
Frantic splashes were heard as Yunho and Junsu were trying to climb over each other to get to the stairs. Soo rolled her eyes as she followed the excited boys.
“I swear, it’s like babysitting children!” she said, throwing her hands in the air.
“Aww, but we are cute children, and you know you love us..” Jae said as he turned to give her a quick kiss on the cheek. Soo blushed and then crossed her arms, “ That’s so unfair…I can’t be mad at you when you are being sweet..” “Exactly!” Jae retorted as she pointed his finger in the air, and then followed Junsu to the video games.
Adrienne watched the interaction with a bit of jealousy. She had always wished she could find a really great guy for herself. She had tried, oh had she tried, but in the end it never worked out. She gave all of herself to the relationship and return, she had gotten nothing back…except a broken heart. After a while she had stopped trying and just settled for hanging out with her friends. Then after her father died, she focused herself on her family, close friends and school work. After some time, she didn’t feel the need to be with someone else, the people that she had in her life already were enough to fill her with love and that’s all that anyone could ever ask for. But, like all people, she had always wanted that special connection with someone; the kind of connection that people wrote books or songs to honor.
“What’s wrong?” Yoochun asked, tapping Adrienne on the shoulder. Adrienne blinked and turned to face him, “Oh…nothing, I was just thinking. Don’t worry about it.” She said as she brushed past him. She returned to the house to find everyone else. The past memories still bothered her. She wasn’t one that habitually dwelled on anything… but there are some things that just never leave you.
“Hey, do you guys have Smash Brothers?” she asked as she wedged herself inbetween Jae and Junsu, who were currently battling for a wireless controller.
“Uhhh..yes! yes we do. Do you like video games, Min? Junsu asked, finally defeating Jae.
“Well, I’m by no means a fanatic, but I’ve been known to play them every now and again.” She answered, picking up a purple controller off the floor. “I’m not too bad at Smash Brothers, it’s my favorite game to play.”
“Well, we can play that, plus it’s multi player so, I think that most of us can play together.” Changmin added, falling into a reclining chair.
“Oh yeah, well my brother and his friends are video game freaks so you can connect two of the systems so you all can play.
“Yes! That’s so awesome!” Yunho exclaimed in glee, “it will be a battle royal, everyone who is playing, grab a controller and let’s get on with it!”
“Uhh, I think that Soo and I will pass….we aren’t much for video games, we will be in my room if you need us,”
Adrienne frowned as Soo and Hae disappeared down the hallway. She felt as though she should be spending time with the girls, but, it was smash brothers after all. She silently cursed her tomboy ways as she chose her character and waited for the game to start.
After a few games of being absolutely demolished by Junsu, Adrienne finally regained her lost skill, or just got lucky. Either way, she destroyed the rest of the guys; gaining 15 kills before she finally won…which was pretty damn good.
“Yeessss haha! You all were beaten by a girl! Bwa hahahaha” She jumped up and did a little victory dance.
Junsu pouted, “Aww man…I was on a roll too…” Adrienne patted him on the head, “It’s ok, it happens to us all.” Adrienne comforted him, “You still killed all of us a number of times before I was able to defeat you.”
“Yeah I guess that’s true…hehe” he laughed maniacally to himself.
*bing!*
They all turned as they heard the doorbell, which meant that the food was finally here. Adrienne had to admit that after swimming and the intense video game session, she had worked up quite an appetite.
“I’ll get it!” Hae shouted as she ran down the hallway from her room.
“Hey, why don’t we go shoot some pool….you know, do something that I’m at least a little skilled at,” Yoochun suggested, tossing his controller down with contempt.
“Sure, but only if you put a shirt one….geez Yoochun, have some respect for us innocent girls here.” Soo said, throwing a t-shirt at him
“Hah, innocent?! Don’t make me laugh, last I checked you both had boyfriends.” He grunted at Soo and Hae as he caught the shirt before it smacked him square in the face.
“Well, Min’s single, so do it for the sake of her innocence.” Soo snapped back as she glanced from around the pizza boxes she was holding.
Yoochun rolled his eyes and pulled the shirt over his head. Adrienne blushed slightly. She hadn’t expecting anyone to call her out like that. She had to admit, it was kind of embarrassing to be singled out as the…well only single girl in the room.
Plus…he looked nice without a shirt on
Adrienne’s eye twitched in irritation as she mentally smacked herself for having such thoughts.
“Ehhh….,” she cleared her throat, “Well! I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m hungry! So…yeah…” she hid her pinking cheeks as she swiftly following Soo and Hae to the game room.
