Chapter 8
Die and Toshiya made their way to the red head’s car, smiling all the way, still happy for the news that they were going to be able to enjoy the next two weeks.
“So, did he buy it?” the blue haired bassist asked.
“Yep. He’ll be at the theater at seven thirty. How about Shinya?”
“Oh, yeah. He bought it. This is going to be great. You did remember to give Kyo the ticket, right?”
“Yeah, of course. That would have been pointless if I hadn’t.” Smiling ever wider, the men got into the vehicle and rode off, leaving Kaoru to wonder what they were talking about with such mischievous expressions on their faces. He decided to shrug it off, and made his way home.
** same day, 7:30pm **
Shinya sat on a bench outside the theater, waiting for Toshiya.
“Hey, have you seen Die?” the sudden sound of Kyo’s voice caused the drummer to jump. He turned to face the vocalist, and it didn’t take long for him to realize that he was somewhat upset.
“No.” Shinya’s reply was short, and Kyo frowned, growing rather confused. They sat there in silence for a moment, Shinya was trying to figure out what might have happened to make them not show up, and not call. Suddenly, a thought hit him which he hoped wasn’t true, but wouldn’t have complained much if it were. “What movie were you supposed to see?” Kyo, who was now sitting on the bench next to Shinya, stared at him a moment before fishing a crumpled piece of paper out of his pocket.
“Tôkyô densetsu: ugomeku machi no kyôki… why?”
“Hmm…” Shinya took out his own ticket and looked at the name. “Me too. Something tells me that they, Die and Toshiya, never meant to see this movie tonight.”
Kyo stared at Shinya, now completely confused.
“You mean they brought us out here on false pretences just so that we would watch a movie together? Having absolutely--”
“No intention of actually showing up tonight? Yes. That’s -exactly- what I mean.” Shinya finished the sentence, earning an odd look from Kyo. It seemed as though interrupting the small vocalist was becoming rather habitual.
“What reason would they have for doing that? It’s not like they’re getting anything out of it.” Kyo watched Shinya carefully. The younger man was no longer looking at him, but was staring intently at a spot on the ground. Sadness slowly crept onto the drummer’s face.
‘Yeah, nothing save for the chance for one of their friends to be happy…’ Shinya thought before the softest touch brought him back to reality. Kyo sat in front of him, crouching to the ground, and pulled his hand from the other’s face slowly. Shinya sat up further on the bench rather nervously. He didn’t have to ask why the blonde had moved because he already knew that he had been crying. After a minute watching the drummer, Kyo stood up and pulled the younger man to his chest in a gentle embrace.
“You know, you’re very beautiful when you’re sad… more so than you normally are. I don’t know why, but…” Kyo stepped back and sighed, Shinya staring up into his blue covered eyes. “Maybe I’ve been blind all this time, and… maybe… maybe Kao, Totchi, and Die have been trying to open my eyes.” Shinya stared at the older man, confusion sinking in. The blonde looked at the door and the ticket booth, then turned back to the drummer. “Do you really want to see this movie?” Shinya sat there, blinking in his confusion. “Or would you rather do something else? …with me?” Kyo looked down at his feet, finding that he was even more nervous than when he had confessed his feelings, or what he thought were, to Kaoru the night before. Shinya looked around to see that a rather large crowd was growing outside the theater, and several people were starting to gawk at the two men.
“Sure. I’d love to.” Shinya stood up and took Kyo’s hand in his before pulling the older man off toward the nearest railway. When Kyo finally returned from his shocked state of mind, he stopped walking with Shinya, causing the younger man to snap back at the sudden lack of movement. “What’s wrong?”
“Let’s go to the park instead?” Shinya stared at the vocalist for a moment before nodding.
“Which one?”
“Hmm… Yoyogi’s closest. And the ginkgo trees should be turning.” Shinya smiled at Kyo, who’s mood seemed to be getting brighter by the second.
When they arrived at Yoyogi park, Kyo released Shinya’s hand and went skipping merrily to a bench somewhere ahead of them, and somewhat away from everyone else… not that there were many people there to begin with.
“Shinya! What’s taking so long?” Kyo called from his seat at the top of the hill. The drummer glared slightly at the vocalist, but he knew that the other didn’t notice. He was simply too far to have been able to see the red head’s facial expressions. With a final sigh, the skinny drummer began running up to the bench where Kyo was.
“Well, you’re certainly full of cheer lately.” Shinya said as he took the seat next to Kyo.
“Nah, only the last… fifteen minutes or so.” Kyo replied, shrugging as he stood up and moved so that he was in front of the younger man once again. Shinya sat there staring at any and everything except Kyo; the drummer was somewhat exhausted from suddenly having to sprint up the hill in order to avoid the ever cute whining of the short vocalist. Kyo stood there a moment, staring back at the drummer as if lost in his thoughts. Before he knew what was going on, Shinya felt something heavy land softly on his lap. Suddenly, his attention was brought to Kyo, who was now sitting on the red head’s lap, staring into his wide eyes. Slowly, Kyo leaned his face to Shinya’s, his eyes closing as he did so. The drummer didn’t move. He was in total shock as their lips touched. They remained like that a couple moments, and when Kyo realized that the other wasn’t showing any sign of acceptance, he pulled away quickly. Shinya’s eyes were shut tight, and a tears slowly fell from them.
“Shinya..? Shinya?” Kyo was worried now, and it was heard in his voice. Shinya didn’t answer, he just sat there, his eyes closed and tears falling down his smooth face. Kyo stood up quickly, feeling as though he had unwittingly done something horribly wrong. “Shinya? I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have--”
“Kyo?” finally, the drummer spoke, though it was barely more than a whisper.
“Yes?” Kyo didn’t even seem to notice that he had once again been interrupted by the younger man as he made his way quickly back to the seat next to the red head.
“Why did you kiss me?” Shinya’s eyes were now open, and he looked at the blonde with the softest look the other had ever seen from him.
“I- I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that, and I knew it, but I did anyway, and I’m sorry.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“I guess it’s because I thought you liked me… and because… I… like you, too.” Kyo replied, not pulling his eyes from Shinya’s once. Kyo felt like an idiot for what he had just done, and was thoroughly convinced that he had messed up. “But, we all make mistakes, ne? This just goes to prove that I’m not immune to that little fact.” Kyo sighed as he stood up and turned to leave. “Sorry about that. I’ve gotta go.” before he could take a step, Shinya reached up and grabbed his hand.
“No, you haven’t made a mistake. In fact, I rather enjoyed it.” Kyo stared at him a moment, unsure as to what he was supposed to do. Kyo was so lost in his state of shock that he didn’t even notice Shinya stand up and face him. He didn’t notice the other’s face moving slowly to his own. And it wasn’t until their lips touched again that he was brought back to reality. Shinya pulled back slowly, leaving Kyo somewhat dazed in his happiness. “Let’s go home.” The drummer said, taking the other man’s hand in his own. It was getting late, and there was a rather long walk ahead of them.

Kaoru sat in his living room looking at the cover to one of the many photo albums he had managed to dig out of the dusty boxes in his attic. He ran his hand gently over the embroidered name on the front. ‘Andou Daisuke’. A name which meant so much for him. He opened the book to the first page of pictures, and as the images of the now red haired guitarist filled his eyes, he let out a soft laugh in light of himself. He had unwittingly known the playful boy the longest. Long before he had met the others. Long before he had personally met Daisuke, even. Who would have thought that a boy he hadn’t even officially met would take priority over a friend of nine years? Certainly not the purple haired man. If someone had told him those many years ago, ‘you’ll choose your best friend’s cousin over the friend himself’, that person would have found his fist in their face. And yet… here he sat, looking at a book filled with memories of the cousin that he took in, and away from his friend. His throat grew sore as harsh memories threatened to flood his mind, and the man took another drink of his beer in a vague attempt to wash the painful thoughts away. He turned the page in the book, and his mind ran away from him.
--flash back--
“Oi, Niikura! I had to bring my brat cousin along, I hope that’s not a problem.” The familiar voice of Sakoshi called to the dark haired boy from the other room.
“No, it’s not a problem, as long as they are good for something.” Kaoru replied, handing his best friend a beer. “Where’s your shit, man? Don’t tell me you didn’t pack.” Kaoru said, realizing that he didn’t bring any bags into the apartment with him.
“No, man… my cousin’s bringing them in. He’s the one I’ve told you about. His name’s Daisuke, but you can call him Pack-mule… I do.” Kaoru nodded and made his way back into the kitchen to get another beer for the newcomer.
--end flashback--
“That is one thing I -don’t- need.” Kaoru said, setting the photo album aside, and turning on his TV. It didn’t take long for the half drunken guitarist to fall asleep.
