Chapter 7
Mana was back in Tokyo after a small but blasting tour in the States. To every-one's surprise he had stopped postponing the tour due to his minor disagreements with the American promoters and rushed everything and everyone into going on tour as soon as possible. Thankfully it had been a success.
Now he was sitting in his office at Moi-Memme-Moitie feeling way better than he had felt before going to the States. He couldn't even understand why he had been so upset. He had met Camui again who had come on to him sexually -so what? It wasn't that he was a little inexperienced kid anymore so why had he felt so intimidated? So weak?
'I guess it has to do with long years of abstinence..' Mana told himself. Yes, that had to be it. It was only natural to feel that way when he had been repressing his urges for years.
Mana had never been a very sexual person. Sure, there had been a time in his puberty when the curiosity had driven him to try various things, but he couldn't say that he had enjoyed them much. Sex stayed always a messy and kind of disgusting act for him, but he didn't deny that the relief it provided was necessary for a balanced existence. No wonder that Camui had gotten so close to bedding him -he wasn't balanced and that made him vulnerable. The possibility of Camui trying something funny on him again convinced him that it was time to do it again.
That would raise the question: with whom?
Mana could never go out and pick up some stranger -that would make him feel just cheap. He also couldn't do it with one of the musicians he was working with because that would cause too many problems. The last time he had done something along those lines it had caused the breaking up of the most successful band under his label and he still regretted that. Not that he really regretted his fling with Hora, the composer of the band, because it had felt back then like the right thing to do, but the financial and psychological consequences had been too great to overlook. Mana would never forget the day Kaya, the vocalist, attacked him in a jealous rage. Sad thing was that he had almost thought till then of Kaya as a dear friend and he wouldn't have done anything with Hora if he had known that he liked him so much..
Mana contemplated for some seconds to call Hora but decided against it. It hadn't been that great to risk another possible fit from Kaya.
Then Mana picked up the phone and called the person that used to be his best friend before he became his occasional lover.. His cheeks reddened as he waited for the guitarist to pick up. It had been a while since the last time they had 'talked'.
"Hai?" Közi's voice sounded and Mana realised that he didn't know what to say. 'I need to get laid and with you it would be uncomplicated enough' would be the truth but it didn't sound like a nice thing to say to someone, so he bit his tongue and said instead: "Hey. It's me, Mana. How are you doing?"
The short silence that followed showed Közi's surprise at his ex-band-mates call. "Mana-chan(*)! It's been a long time.."
"Well, you know busy-busy and that. So how are you?" Mana stood up and went to the large window overlooking the street. It felt good hearing Közi again, he realised that he had missed him. When he had moved to Tokyo almost a lifetime back, Közi was always there for him protecting him, being his best friend until Mana destroyed their friendship by having sex with him. Since then things had become awkward between them.
"I'm fine, thanks, how about you?" Közi replied politely but a little reserved.
The small-talk surely felt weird, so Mana decided to get more to the point. "Great. Listen Közi-kun, I wanted to ask you to go out for dinner with me.." He fiddled nervously with the lace at the end of his long sleeve, wondering if Közi understood what he was trying to ask him for.
The silence that followed his question showed that Közi had understood.
Before Mana could feel embarrassed at a possible rejection a hand came up from behind him and snatched the phone from his ear. Startled almost out of his skin Mana spun around to be drawn abruptly into a brief embrace.
"Welcome back, enjeru(**)!" Camui said with a big smile and pressed a kiss to Mana's cheek before he put the phone to his own ear.
"Közi-kun? Hey what's up? Long time no see..." Gackt said with genuine joy at speaking with his former band-mate. "...I overheard Mana-chan talking to you and grabbed the chance.."
Mana was so angry at Camui's intrusion that he thought he could see smoke coming from his own nose, but he decided that he had to wait for Gackt to end the call with Közi before he threw him out. Preferably out of the window. He didn't like witnesses when he lost his temper.
"Sure! .. a reunion? We could ask Yu~ki to join us... alright... tonight it is then -it'll be fun! Wait, I think Mana-chan wants to talk to you, I snatched the phone away from him before he was finished I think.. What? ... Hai, he looks very angry, but I guess he'll get over it. See you later, Közi-kun!" With that Camui handed the phone back to Mana his smile never wavering. When the dark-haired man didn't make a move to take the devise into his hand he just held the phone to his ear and told him slowly and in a way someone would speak to a retard: "Say hello to Közi-kun, Mana-chan."
Mana snatched the phone back and pushed Camui away before he turned his back on him.
"Mana-kun, you back on?" he heard Közi's voice and tried to take control of his anger. "Hai Közi-kun." Mana answered through gritted teeth.
"I have to confess that at first I thought you had a more private rendezvous in mind. I am kind of embarrassed now that I thought that, while you were planning a reunion-dinner. I am somewhat surprised that the idea came from you, I had the impression that Gackt and you weren't on good terms with each-other! Anyway, cool that I turned out to be wrong." Közi chattered carelessly while Mana felt the growing urge to scream. He couldn't possibly tell Közi now that a private rendezvous was exactly what he had in mind before his worst nightmare had shown up to ruin his plans.
"Hn." he grunted eloquent into the receiver.
"So, I already told Gackt that I'd inform Yu~ki. Would ten o' clock be ok? Gackt said that he didn't mind the time. Of course you get to pick the place, after all it was your idea."
"Ten is fine." Mana replied. "The tiny Thai-restaurant in the outskirts, remember it? It's private enough that we'll be hopefully avoiding any reporters."
"How could I forget it? We spent the majority of our evenings there when back in Mizer. See you later Mana-chan -ah and don't gut Gacku-chan for taking the phone from you!" Közi said and Mana could almost hear him grin.
"Hai. Ja ne(***), Közi-kun." Mana said and hit the button to disconnect with more force than he had intended.
It was fucking unbelievable, Mana thought shaking with anger and still not turning around to face Camui. The man had to be nuts to burst uninvited and unannounced into his office and interrupt a private phone-call like that. Especially because last time he had seen him he had thrown him out of his house.
He had to be insane, there was no other explanation.
Mana decided that there was no use in fighting with an insane man and took deep breaths to calm himself down. When he found his cool again he turned slowly around and found Camui sitting on his big dark wooden desk. The smile still on his face.
"So how was the tour?" the blond man asked innocently.
Mana ignored him and took his place behind the desk. He hit one button on the intercom. "Sakura-san, can I talk to you for a minute?" he said to his secretary in an ordering tone.
Seconds later the door to his office opened and the young secretary came in to stand trembling with fear in front of Mana's desk.
"Mana-sama?" she asked with a quiet voice, casting her guilty eyes downwards. Meanwhile Gackt was watching the whole scene with obvious interest. He had a vague idea of what was about to come.
"Who is this?" Mana asked motioning with his hand to the sitting man on his desk. When the girl didn't answer he repeated: "Sakura-san, I asked you a question. Would you be so kind to answer it."
"Mana-sama, I think that you already know who this man is. It's Camui Gackt, your former band-mate.." the girl almost whispered on the verge of tears.
"No." Mana interrupted her raising his voice. "This man is an intruder! How do you explain that he is sitting here although I didn't have an appointment with him?"
"But Mana-sama, I thought that you wouldn't mind to see him.."
"I don't care what you thought. You are not getting paid for making assumptions, your job is to arrange my appointments and prevent unscheduled people from bursting into my office. What the hell do you think security is for?"
"But Mana-sama.." the girl's eyes had teared up and she was obviously trying hard to swallow her sobs.
"I think that's enough Mana." Gackt said seriously and stood up to place one comforting hand on the girls shaking shoulder. "Go back to your desk, Mana-sama has had a bad day today.."
When the door closed behind the girl Mana stood up and approached Gackt with fast steps. The slap he gave him sounded weird in the big office and made Gackt's head spin to one side.
"How dare you question my judgement in front of my employees? How dare you burst in here like that? You already know that your presence is not appreciated." Mana was so enraged that he was yelling. Thank god the room was soundproof and that would prevent anyone overhearing him loosing his temper.
At first Gackt didn't move at all but when he turned his head slowly to face the angry man in front of him a lazy and satisfied smile was plastered on his lips. Gackt's expression made Mana even angrier and he tried to slap him again but Gackt was faster and caught his hand in mid-motion. When Mana raised his other hand to complete his task, he realised only too late that it had been a mistake because Gackt caught it too and spun him around to slam him into the wall before pinning him with his body. Mana found that he couldn't move and a low growl escaped his throat while his eyes were showing the other man all the hatred he felt.
"You know it's me you're really angry at not the poor girl. Leave her be and show me how you feel." Gackt provoked him.
"Let go of me." Mana sneered and tried to kick him, but Gackt had seen it coming and pressed him more into the wall leaving no room for him to raise his leg.
"Yeah that's right baby, show me how much you hate me for making you feel." Gackt murmured into his ear. "Show me that you are not as dead as you make everyone believe. Even anger and hatred are better than nothing."
Mana felt tears of frustration forming in his eyes and he stopped thrashing. Camui was right, he was the only one that had ever made him feel, and then he had left. What did he want now?
"Why Camui? Why do you care all of a sudden if I don't have any emotions left? You certainly didn't care when you left me.. Mizer." he corrected in the last second.
"I had to leave Mana. I couldn't breathe anymore, I had to make my own music, you above all people should be able to understand that need. But I never meant to leave from YOU, but then you shut me out.."
Mana kept quiet. He suddenly felt very tired. He didn't want to be having this conversation with Gackt. He didn't want to hear the reasons for Gackts departure, they didn't matter, never had.
"Let go of me now, would you?" he asked and Gackt sighed and let his arms go before retreating two steps.
"If you don't mind I have some work to do now, but I guess we'll see each-other tonight at our 'happy' reunion." he said going on unsteady legs back to his desk. Gackt smiled and went for the door. "I'll pick you up at nine thirty."
Mana rolled his eyes but murmured a quiet : "Hai."
When Gackt was about to exit he said: "Ah and Camui-san? Next time you intrude into my office like this I'll call security. "
