Chapter 8
xx Skylar
You always thought that if I was gone the next day that I didn't want you anymore. It was little things like that that let me see the real you – your real insecurities. You worried about little things and that made me felt closer to you then to anyone. Even through all your insecurities that drove me in for a loop and all the times you worried over the unimportant things, you still had the power to make me weak where my heart was concerned. You always did that, Lauri. It was always you.
I remember walking into my apartment a couple minutes after the time I had set in your letter. Although worry was written all over your face when you casually glanced in my direction as I walked through the door, you still played it cool by flipping through the television stations. You made me laugh even when you didn't mean to. And that's just another thing to add to the on growing list of reasons why I fell in love with you and what keeps me loving you.
"Did you get everything that you needed to done?" you asked as I put down a brown paper bag on the kitchen table.
"For the most part yes," I said as I walked over to the couch and sat down next to you. "What kinds of trouble did you cause while I was away?" I asked lightly.
"I am not the cause of any trouble," you swore to me. I gave you a quizzical look and you sighed. "Well maybe sometimes…" you chuckled lowly. I continued to look at you through raised brows. "Alright! All the time, now would you please stop looking at me like that woman?!" I laughed out loud while you just looked at me; your mouth lined straight, your hands crossed over your chest.
"Don't kid yourself Ylonen," I said through laughter as I was coming down from the high. "Don't deny that you love to cause chaos everywhere you go. It's like you can't do anything quietly. You have to make yourself known," I said as my laughter died down. "But in all seriousness, what have you been up to?"
"I went out after our fight last night," you began.
"Where'd you go?" I asked growing concerned because you didn't know Massachusetts very well.
"Don't worry so much. I'm a grown man and I can care for myself," you reprimanded me. "I went to the local mall to do some thinking."
"And…" I pushed.
"…And I still think you should come to Finland with me," you said. "What about this dinner with your parents?" you asked.
"Oh that," I said. "They want to meet you," I smiled.
"But didn't I meet them at the party?" you asked confused. I shook my head.
"I don't think so," I reasoned. "I don't remember introducing you."
"I must have met them before you arrived…when we were setting up and doing sound check," you explained.
"I really don't know Lauri," I said. "But either way we're going over for dinner. We can tell them everything then," I said. But I didn't know if I could tell them everything. Surely they'd flip out if they found out I was pregnant. My family was traditional and believed that sex came after marriage, not before.
"If it'll make everyone happy then I guess I'll go," you said. I swatted your arm.
"You'd be going even if I had to drag you by your feathers Mr.," I said trying to be serious.
"By my feathers huh?" you asked mocking me. I leaned over and poked your nose with the tip of my index finger. You squished your nose up and sniffled a few times. "Don't do that. You'll make me have boogers." I laughed out loud.
"You're crazy," I said shaking my head.
"Only crazy about you," you said as you grabbed my expanding waist and slid me closer to you.
It was times like those that made me feel the most protected. Nothing could ever harm me while I was in your arms Lauri. We were untouchable. We were normal people who enjoyed each others company. But moments like those never lasted long. In the back of my mind I always had the nagging vision of you leaving me for the band. Touring, the groupies, the lavish parties – there was no way you were ready for me, for us. That's when I pushed myself out of your embraces; when I thought those things. It made me want to close my heart off to you so I wouldn't get hurt. I would be fine raising our child by myself. I was preparing myself for it.
The only problem was – I was so far deep in you that I wouldn't be prepared if you left us again.
xx Lauri
That night we went to your parents' house for dinner. I was nervous to be formally introduced to them and you were right, I didn't get the chance to meet them at the party beforehand. But they were wonderful people. They welcomed me with open arms and I felt most comfortable when they asked me questions of Finland or of The Rasmus.
It surprised me of how much you knew of me. I don't remember having conversations about my dislike for meats with you. But somehow you knew and made sure to have your mother prepare something to my liking. It made me want to keep you that much closer to me. The thing you taught me was the subtle things in life, things that were not material. I may not have told you often, but I never took the little things forgranted. In fact, it made me appreciate you that much more.
"So when are you going back home Lauri?" your mother asked me.
"It's L-ow-ree not Lori mom," you said correcting your mom.
"Its okay," I said waving my hand at you. Your mother smiled warmly at me. "Well to answer your question…I go back this weekend," I said. I looked over at you and squeezed your hand under the table. "And I was wondering if you'd come back for a little vacation with me. Sky is coming and we'd really like it if you'd come too," I said.
"That's thoughtful of you but we couldn't," your mother said.
"And why's that?"
"This weekend is in three days that's why. And how would we pay for it?"
"Oh that's no problem. I've arranged everything; plane tickets, a place to stay – all you have to do is fly with us," I said and took a sip of my wine.
"Skylar?" your mother looked at you. You smiled and looked at me with wide eyes. It took my breath away. You were glowing with excitement. You were going to tell them.
"Yeah, I'm going with Lauri but there's something else…" I gave your hand a harder squeeze. "Lauri and I are…remember my birthday party…well….Lauri and I…mom, dad…I'm pregnant," you blurted out. I was holding my breath the whole time as we waited for your parent's reaction.
I nearly fell backwards in my chair out of shock when your mother sprang from her chair, came over to you as you stood up, and pulled you into the biggest embrace I've ever seen a parent give – the both of you squealing all the while. I stood up cautiously as your father came around to give me a warm handshake. He patted my back and with his hand still on my shoulder, led me to another room.
"I want you to know that's my little girl in there," he said. "My only child." I nodded.
"I know that Sir," I said.
"And I love her very much."
"I understand that," I replied.
"I just want to know what it is you're planning on doing that's all. A baby is a huge responsibility and with you traveling and being in a band, there's no way to guarantee that you'll always be there for my baby."
"I can honestly say that I fell in love with your daughter at her birthday party and I already asked her to marry me which she refused saying that she didn't want to marry unless she knew for certain that the person proposing really wanted it too. She explained to me that once she's committed, that's it – no going back. I haven't told her to her face that I love her yet because I'm waiting for it to be special. But I think she feels it. She's told me that she loves me, so I know in my heart she is my future," I explained to him.
"But how can I know that your feelings are legit? How do I know that I can trust you to care for your responsibilities?" Your father was a good man, Sky. Always looking out for your best interest.
"Will this prove it to you?" I asked pulling something out of my pocket. Handing it over to your father he examined it and then handed it back to me.
"When?" was his next question.
"In Finland," I said. "I already have everything planned." There was a moment of silence between us. It made me insecure. But tears began forming in my eyes at what he said next. It was then I knew there was no turning back. I had made our future.
"Welcome to the family son," your father said pulling me into an embrace. I hugged your father back, patting his back lightly. When your father pulled away he looked at me and smiled. "I see that you're a good man and I have confidence in you to take care of my little princess."
"With all of my heart I promise," I breathed. "I love her so much."
"So…what did you and my daddy talk about?" you asked me while we lay in bed that night.
"Nothing much really," I said turning my head to look at you.
"Oh come on," you said. "Tell me something good." I laughed and reached out to touch your face.
"I'm serious sweetheart. It was nothing special. He just wanted to make sure that I would be around from time to time to help out with the baby and stuff. It was guy talk," I said as I pulled you closer to me. "Now try to get some sleep."
"But I want to know everything," you said in a childish voice. I kissed the top of your head.
"Then it wouldn't be guy talk now would it?" I asked. "Seriously, you need to sleep."
"I'm glad my parents are happy about the baby," you said. I smiled remembering your mother's reaction.
"Me too," I agreed. "And I'm glad they agreed to come home with us," I said as I stroked my fingers through your hair.
"Yeah," you said. "Do you think your family will be as good about it as mine?"
"I think so," I said. "They're not bad people. If anything, Hannah will be happy to know she's going to be an Auntie."
"Your sister…" you sigh. "Do you miss her?"
"I miss them all," I said. "But let's not talk about it anymore. Let's get some sleep," I finished as I turned off the lamp on the side table. The room became dark and I held you tightly in my arms.
One family down, two more families to go; my parents and Hannah and the guys.
