The guys had all been sharing one house during their time off. It seemed to be more efficient, as well as close to everything, including family.
Apprehensively, Claire raised her finger to press the door bell.
She silently prayed that anyone would answer the door apart from Brandon.
To her gratification, Mike Einziger opened it with a smile.
“Wow, hey cupcake. I didn’t think you’d be up to early.”
“I just had to wish my boys the best of luck” she smiled lightly, reaching up to give him a hug.
“Thanks” he accepted warmly “Chris is upstairs.”
She noticed that he didn’t mention Brandon, which meant he must have had heard something about what happened the day before.
“Is he awake?”
“Yeah, just got up actually.” Mike casually said, walking up the stairs with her.
She ached to ask where Brandon was, it had always been such a habit.
Instead, she quickly walked to the top of the staircase incredibly nervous at the prospect of running into him.
Turning into Chris' room she greeted him
“Hi bro-bro” she closed the door behind herself.
“Aw, you came to see me off” he oozed fake endearment. “I’m just playing” he embraced her “Thanks”
“No prob, so when do you guys leave?”
“At about 9. But we’re leaving the house by 7 just to pack up all the stuff we need and get things in check.”
“Cool” she nodded evenly.
“So what happened with Brandon” he asked flat out.
“Nothing”
“Claire, obviously something happened. He came in yesterday afternoon looking like someone killed his cat.”
“Brandon doesn’t have a cat”
“You know what I mean. He didn’t get into it with any of us-well actually, I think Mike knows something but you know how he gets.”
“We’re just taking a break” Claire replied demurely.
“A Break? You guys aren’t dating, you’re best friends. What kind of break could you possibly need…”
He hadn’t really been looking at her, instead he attempted to pull his dreads into a low pony tail.
Watching him snap the elastics everywhere but his hair, Claire walked over ordering him to sit, doing it for him within a minute.
“You really gotta teach me how to do that”
“Yeah”
He turned to her, letting her know “You still haven’t answered my question,
So Why?”
“It was just, kind of interfering with my relationship with Michael.”
“Really? Michael’s never struck me as the insecure type.” he replied with a funny shrug.
“It’s just for now. I think it’s best” she lied.
“Brandon isn’t your light switch sis, you cant just end nearly 10 years of friendship like that and just expect when Michael gives you the 'okay', Brandon’ll be up and ready to take that position of the best friend again.” Chris fairly told her, seemingly intent on her choice of words.
“Chris…” she groaned, knowing he was right.
“Brandon cares about you. That guy would do just about anything for you. Sometimes I even think he knows you better than I do, and that’s just weird. All I’m saying is, if Michael trusts you and loves you, he should be able to accept the people you have in your life...who have been there before him.”
Claire opened her mouth to argue, but couldn’t find reason to, she knew he was right.
Chris looked at her empathetically, running a hand through her thick, curly tresses.
“You’ve got to get your priorities straight, sis” he sincerely told her, and she nodded.
They remained in his room for another half hour, packing his things up. Somehow they had gotten on the topic of partying on tour.
“I hope you don’t contract herpes. Or anything worse”
“Claire” He laughed at her well renowned drollness.
“Speaking of which, when the last time you got any?” she teased, poking her finger through a small frayed hold on the side of his shirt, tickling him.
He squirmed “That’s none of your business, and for you’re information I nor the rest of the guys sleep around on tour”
“I‘m just playing around, sweetie. And you don’t have to defend yourself to me” she smiled pinching his cheeks.
Claire then left the room, realizing all his things were ready to go.
Chris followed behind her, asking “You couldn’t help bring some of these down?”
“I’m a girl, Chris. I’m far too weak” she rolled her eyes sardonically.
Instantly she was met by a bag flying down the stairs hitting her square on the rear.
Immidiately, she yelled, running her hand over it.
“Well, maybe if it wasn’t so noticeable, you wouldn’t get hit on it.” Jose appeared from a nearby hallway.
“You shut up” she narrowed her eyes at him.
“Hey, I’m not complaining. I‘m actually impressed,”
She punched him in the arm before he could say anymore.
“You have got to one of the most abusive women I have ever met. Do you know how many girls wish they could have a piece of this?” he smugly asked, apparently trying to convince himself.
She busted out laughing, then patted him on the shoulder
“I can only imagine”
“Has anyone ever told you, that you and Einziger look related?” he offhandedly asked, When Mike proceeded down the stairs with his things.
“Because of our hair” she could read him so well. “You‘re so primitive sometimes”
“Well yours is longer, but maybe if you dreaded your hair like your brother over there would be less of a confusion”
“No one has ever gotten us confused but YOU Jose so just shut up.”
she couldn’t be bothered.
“No, you shut up”
“You shut up”
“No, you shut up”
“BOTH of you shut up” Mike held his head.
By chance, Claire glanced at the kitchen area, catching sight of Brandon.
“So, you’re gonna come out and visit us?” Ben asked, adding his things to the corner of the room, as the rest had.
She nodded distractedly, with her eyes remaining glued to Brandon as he took a gulp of orange juice, casually wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
She didn’t know if he had seen her already, but then again, it was Brandon, he had always been vigilant of pretty much everything.
A quick glance at her watch told her that she had only a few minutes more to go before Michael ordered her home.
Claire had a good mind to defy him, but thought it best to push the imprudent thought to the back of her head.
He would make mincemeat of her, and she knew that.
“Guys” she raised her voice slightly to be heard over the chatter going on between them.
“I’ve got to go” she finished, gaining they’re attention.
“So soon?” Mike asked.
“Yeah,” Chris added “I thought you would have at least helped us load up the truck.”
“I wish” Claire smirked to their offbeat humor.
“Come here, all of you” he motioned with her hands, while Brandon remained in the kitchen rinsing out his glass.
“I’m going to miss you guys” she said in an unexpected choked tone.
They hugged back, slightly perturbed at the fact that she never behaved in this manner the previous times she had seen them off, before tour.
At this time, Brandon now walked out of the kitchen, near his belongings at the door, aimlessly sorting through them.
When they all broke apart, she individually hugged each of them telling them to be ‘Be good’ jokingly.
“You better come out to visit us as planned, in Seattle.”
That was 2 months from now.
“If anything comes up, you know where to call me. Anytime.” Mike told her while she remained in his arms.
“I know” she smiled appreciatively.
“Claire, can I talk to you for a minute?” Chris asked, noting something stranger than usual in her behavior.
She followed him into the now vacant kitchen.
“Are you going to be okay, while I’m gone?”
“I’ll be alight” smiled through a veil of tears.
“Whoa, Cee, why are you crying?” he pulled her in for a hug.
“I’m not” she told him with her face buried at his shoulder.
He moved back momentarily to thumb away a few tears on her cheeks, then showing her the liquid now resting on his fingers “You’re not?”
“I’m just going to miss you guys, that’s all.”
Claire had honestly never cried when the guys had to leave. She was down, yes, but never to the point of tears.
“You sure?” he couldn’t figure out what else to ask.
“I’m sure” she laughed, running both hands over her face.
The way she was acting came across as though she would never see them again.
“Okay, well give me another hug and cheer up. You’re gonna kill my entire day if this is the last memory I have of you before leaving.”
“See” Claire smiled brightly “I’m cheered” she reached up hugging him again in reassurance. “Now, as I told the rest guys, Be good.”
“Claire, I’m always good” he cunningly grinned.
She playfully hit him on the arm, walking out of the kitchen, together.
“Alright guys, I’m off.” she said walking to the door.
Brandon had just come through the front door, after placing the last of his belongings outside on the front steps.
He hadn’t so much as even looked at her to acknowledge her presence, and that feeling had her torn apart with emotion.
She did this, not him.
Before Claire fully made it out the door already opened door, she paused, grasping Brandon’s wrist lightly.
He looked at her for the first time that morning when she said
“Brandon, Take care of yourself ” giving him a faint smile.
The irony.
A feeling of déjà vu consumed him in pertinence to the way she must have felt the day before when he walked away from her, saying almost those exact words.
So much emotion was contained beneath her smile that he instantly felt it.
Brandon couldn’t seem to separate his eyes away from her as she let go and walked down the three or so stairs and into her car.
He realized that he could not stop her, after all it was HER who urged HIM to stay away. Not the other way around.
“That was kind of strange” Mike said breaking the silence.
Brandon didn’t respond, instead he changed the subject asking
“Are you going to bring your stuff outside or wait ‘til the car gets here”
