Chapter 8: Q: What can happen in three days? A: Everything!
For the next three days Ryan sat around, and missed Heather. Surprisingly, he didn’t think about Alanis hardly at all.
‘Maybe I didn’t actually love her like I had previously thought.’ Ryan told himself. ‘You would think if I actually loved her I wouldn’t have fallen for Heather so quickly... and I wouldn’t have forgotten Alanis so quickly.’ And it was true, he had fallen in love with Heather, it may have only been a week since they had met, but he felt feelings that he had never felt before with anyone, not even Alanis.
Ryan wanted to kiss Heather, and touch her, but it wasn’t only physical, he also wanted to just constantly be around her, talking to her, listening to her, and making her laugh.
He loved the fact that she wasn’t scared to be herself around him. When most girls met him they always tried to act different. They tried to act seductive, always calm and collected, and they never talked about themselves except for their looks. They never told him anything about themselves, anything weird like their quirks, or anything else that would differentiate them from other girls.
From the very beginning, Heather had shown her true self to him, or at least most of it. She hadn’t been scared to tell him about any of her weirdness. She’d told him about her great liking for cheese, about her parents, she even constantly cracked her weird and sarcastic jokes, even if she knew that Ryan wasn’t going to think they were funny. That was just who she was, and he loved that about her.
Ryan had decided that, since it had only been a week since they had met, that he would not tell Heather how he felt about her, he was afraid that she would be freaked out, or think he was lying, and then leave him. ‘I can’t let that happen! I don’t know what I would do if she left me.’
‘But, you’re going to have to leave her.’ his mind countered back.
‘NO! Well... yeah... but not for a while still. We’ll figure out something when the time comes, right now I’m just gonna enjoy the time that Heather and I get to spend together.’
Ryan watched television, he worked out, he even slept more than normal, in an attempt to pass the time ‘til Heather came home.
It really surprised him how much he missed her. He had come to Bastrop for relaxation, peace and quiet, and isolation from other people, but instead he met a beautiful, funny, and loving girl that he had fallen in love with. ‘Who would have thought it?’ he thought to himself, ‘Definitely not me!’ he answered back.
Ryan laid on the couch, endlessley searching through the channels, trying to find something that would catch his interest, but not succeeding. ‘Hell! When is she gonna be back?’ He looked down at his watch and saw that it had only been twenty-seven hours since Heather had left. “Damn it!” he exclaimed outloud.
For the next few days, Ryan sat and waited for Heather’s return.

The time for Heather’s return came and went, and Heather never showed up. ‘What could have happened? Did she stay for longer that she was going to? What the hell happened? Why hasn’t she at least called me?’
Ryan sat around his house for the next couple hours, wondering why Heather hadn’t yet, at least, called him, to tell him that she was gonna be staying longer than she had previously thought.
Right before she had left she had promised that she was going to come over to his house the second she got back, and that she was going to try and come back as soon as possible. She had then told him an exact time she would be back. “Or even sooner if I can help it!” she had told him before jumping on him and squeezing the life out of him in a huge hug.
Something had to have happened, he had decided, and just as we was getting up to get his phone, there was a soft, almost weak, knock at his door.
‘Heather?!’ his mind wondered excitedly.
Ryan opened the door, hoping Heather was on the other side. There stood two women in old, almost ancient, looking dresses, holding small booklets in their hands.
“Good afternoon.” one of the women said nicely, “We just wondered if you had a few minutes. We would love to talk to you about the greatest person that you couold ever have in your life, Jesus Christ.” she then smiled a sweet smile at him.
Ryan looked at them and then quickly apologized, “I’m sorry. I really am, but I was just about to do something. You see, I’m afraid something might have happened to my girlfrie...”
Even before Ryan could finish his sentence, Heather drove up into his driveway. “Heather!” Ryan worriedly exclaimed, pushing past the women with a mumbled apology and running out to meet Heather at the car.
“Are you okay?” he asked her worriedly, looking at the wan smile she gave him. “Did something happen?”
“No...no...I’m fine.” she said unconvincingly.
She looked past him to the women standing on his porch. “So, you have other women in your life, do ya? Entertaining them while I was gone hmm?” Heather said, trying to show Ryan that she was just fine, ‘See...I can still make jokes.’ she thought, ‘Yeah, but you only do it to keep people from seeing your true feelings.’ her mind shot back. “Be quiet, stupid mind.” she mumbled.
“What was that?” Ryan asked.
“Nothing.” Heather answered and then tried to push past him to go into the house.
Ryan’s hand stopped her by pressing against her stomach. “Now, just wait a minute.” Ryan said “I know that you’re lying to me about being okay. I may not have known you for very long, but I do know that you use humor to keep other people from seeing your true feelings.” he hugged her softly, “Now, tell me what really happened.”
The feeling of his warm, protective arms around her, broke her facade. She buried her face in his chest and began to cry softly. “Shh..” He cooed to her softly. “Come on, come inside and let’s talk about it.”
He slowly led her into the house. As he passed by the two women he called over his shoulder, “I’m sorry ladies, but I’m gonna have to take a rain check on talking to you both. Bye.” And then he closed the door with his foot and led Heather to the couch.
“Come here Doll.” he whispered and pulled her onto his lap and into his arms. She again buried her face in his shirt and began to softly cry. Ryan couldn’t hear anything, but he knew she was crying because he could feel a spot of wetness slowly growing on his chest.
He put his chin onto the top of her head and softly cradled her body, allowing her to feel safe and protected. ‘What ever happened,’ Ryan thought, ‘had to have happened at her parents’ house. If I ever meet her parents, they’re going to get a piece of my mind.’
Ryan lifted up her chin, bringing her face level with his. “What happened love?” he asked softly. Heather’s eyes slowly opened and Ryan could see her silver orbs full of glittering tear drops.
Ryan’s face became red with anger and sadness. Heather saw Ryan’s reaction to the tears and swiftly closed them again. He slowly brought his lips to her eyes, and kissed each closed eyelid slowly, before bringing her lips into a soft, but penetrating kiss.
Ryan heard a quiet sigh and felt Heather’s body relax and melt into his. He knew that she was finally comfortable and getting ready to open up to him.
He hugged her body closer and pulled her hand softly into his, running his fingers slowly back and forth over the top.
Heather took a deep breath in an attempt to get her emotions under control. ‘Just breath Heather. You can do this.’ she coaxed to herself. ‘This is just Ryan, you can tell him...’
“M-my parents.” she mumbled softly.
“I figured as much, love.” he whispered sweetly into her ear and kissed the tip of it.
“When I got there, it was okay.” she said, “They were acting pretty normal, both of them were fighting and yelling at each other, while the boys ran around the house screaming and hitting each other, and then everything quieted down after an hour. A little later on, they both went somewhere. They told me that they were going to the store and they would be right back, but they were gone for three and a half hours. When they got back my mother was acting really strange. She wouldn’t look at me, or respond to anything I said to her.”
A tear made its way down her cheek, leaving a wet trail in its wake. “My Dad eventually started getting mad like he always does when he gets drunk. He started yelling at my mom, telling her things like ‘...you’re a lazy-ass! All you do is sit around all day and eat! You need to get a job, and help me out around the house!’ She then told him that she was gonna walk down the road to the convenient store and see her friend that works there. My dad told her that if she walked out, that she wasn’t allowed back in the house.”
Heather looked up at Ryan, “Ry, he even locked the door and told me and my brothers that we weren’t allowed to unlock the door for her.”
Heather looked away from Ryan, wishing that she could forget that night.
