The next day, the group was ready and waiting for Trent and his camera crew to show up. Gina and Kyle were playing Sims on a gaming console on the living room floor. Gina was angry after Kyle let his character in the game leave her character to burn to death just so his character could talk to the neighbor next door.
“You could have just called the fire department, Kyle!” Gina was angrily screeching.
“But the neighbor never comes over. This was my only chance! Are you wanting to condemn my character to a life of loneliness just because yours can’t cook dinner without setting herself on fire?” Kyle retorted.
“Oh my God, I can’t believe you let my character die!”
“Calm down, it’s just a game!”
“Calm down? You left me to a fiery painful death!”
“They argue like a married couple,” Pontius pointed out to Savvy. They were sitting on the couch, munching on rice crackers, Savvy entwined in Pontius’ arms.
“I know, its weird.”
“How long have they known each other?” Dunn asked, grabbing a cracker from Savvy’s bowl.
“Forever,” Heather chimed in. “They’ll eventually kill each other, I’m pretty sure.”
“You think so?” Preston asked.
“I wonder who would win a fight to the death?” Dunn mused, watching as Gina and Kyle continued yelling at each other, completely oblivious to the conversation going on about them. They weren’t even fighting about the game anymore. Gina was yelling something about the fact that looking through someone’s purse was an invasion of privacy.
“My money is on Gina because Kyle is a wimp,” Courtney said matter-of-factly.
“I hate you!” Gina finally screamed, stomping off toward the kitchen.
“Whatever,” Kyle replied, sitting down to continue his game.
Knoxville was drinking a beer at the kitchen table when Gina stormed in and went to the refrigerator. She pulled out a Sprite and poured it into a glass before drinking it.
“What’s going on?” Knoxville asked.
“Kyle sucks at life, that’s what’s going on,” Gina muttered.
“Oh. Okay,” Knoxville tried not to laugh. He had overheard the friends’ heated argument and found it cute that Gina was so offended that her friend had let her die in a video game. “You gonna be okay?” he asked with a smirk.
Gina stared at Johnny for a moment before laughing at herself. “Yeah. It was dumb of me to get mad. It was just a game.”
“I remember one time Madison wouldn’t talk to me for a week because she asked me to help her beat this level in Kingdom Hearts and I fucked it up and she had to start over,” Johnny smiled at the memory.
“Madison?” Gina asked.
“My daughter,” Knoxville replied, and then realized that this conversation was feeling awkward.
“Oh, yeah. How old is she now?” Gina tried to act nonchalant. He had a daughter? Maybe she had run across the fact in an Entertainment Weekly, but for some reason the thought had never crossed her mind the entire time they had been here.
“She’s six.”
“Where is she staying while you are here?” Gina asked, curiosity overtaking her uneasiness.
“With Melanie… her mom. Ever since the divorce, I get her on the weekends and holidays. Melanie wants to keep her while I do most of this show, so I will just go and visit her instead of bringing her here. I talked Melanie into letting Madison come the week of Thanksgiving, though,” Johnny explained. Johnny was concerned that Gina was taking the conversation so collected and cool. If he had been interested in a girl and then found out all of a sudden that she had a six-year-old kid, he would have blanched. But Gina seemed fine with the idea. Maybe she didn’t have any feelings for Johnny after all… Johnny sighed angrily at the thoughts running through his mind.
“Trent’s here!”
Gina swallowed the rest of her Sprite and ran to Johnny, grabbing his arm. “They’re here, let’s go!”
“Okay, okay, I’m coming!” Johnny laughed, downing his beer and allowing himself to be dragged to the living room.
Cameras were being set up around the living room and Trent was being fawned over by a make-up artist who was intently adding the final touches to Trent’s perfect face. Johnny and Gina sat next to each in the only remaining seat, their bodies pressed close. Knoxville slid his arm over the back of the chair, his hand lightly coming to rest on Gina’s shoulder. Trent raised his hands for silence, pushing the make-up artist away.
“Cameras ready?” he asked.
“Yes, sir!” the cameramen replied.
“Alright then, let’s get this thing started,” Trent proclaimed. “For your first challenge…”
Heather tuned out the host’s perfectly scripted speech because she had already heard it from Savvy. She found her gaze involuntarily flicking over to Steve-O. He had rolled out of bed and stumbled into the living room five minutes before Trent and his camera crew arrived. His hair was a disheveled mess and he was wearing loose sweat pants while his chest was bare. From the looks of it, he hadn’t slept much last night. His eyes met hers and she looked away quickly, hoping he hadn’t noticed her looking. Steve-O grinned to himself and heard Trent finally mention the thing everyone was waiting to hear.
“Your reward for this game, besides bragging rights, will be the right to choose one person from the other team to do your chores for you all week. The person you choose will have to do everything you ask them; they will be in your servitude for the week.”
“Fuck that! We gotta win!” Dunn exclaimed.
“Scared or not, I’m kicking ass! Fuck serving one of you guys for a week!” Gina exclaimed.
Knoxville had a strange feeling that he was being watched. Looking around, he spied Karen staring at him. She smiled when she caught his eye and she waved. Knoxville’s eyebrows furrowed and he shuffled slightly closer to Gina. Gina looked over at him with a shy smile and leaned into him. Knoxville swallowed and glanced back over at Karen, for he could still feel her gaze on him. She wiggled her eyebrows at him and winked. Knoxville looked startled and turned back to Trent, giving Gina’s shoulder a squeeze. Why was Karen shooting him flirtatious glances? Wasn’t it obvious he was into Gina?
“There are two hearses waiting outside for you to start. The driver has your first clue. When I count to three, you may race to the hearses and begin,” Trent suddenly stopped and stared around at the group. “Are we missing someone?”
Everyone looked around.
“Bam,” they all said in unison with a groan.
Suddenly, there was a crash as Bam smashed through the living room window on his skateboard in a panda bear suit.
“One, two, three, go! Go! Go!” Trent screamed, running from the house.
“What? We can go?” Gina asked frantically.
“Yes! Let’s go! Let’s go!” Savvy yelled, grabbing Heather and Gina’s arms and pulling them out the door.
Dunn and Wee-Man hoisted Bam to his feet and drug him out to the awaiting hearse. All the guys were in the hearse as Dunn read their first hint aloud. Likewise, Courtney was reading the girls their first hint.
“Industry in the core of the city. You have everything to fear, for objects of torture are produced here. This factory of fright is sure to keep you awake all night,” Courtney read, her face looking quite confused.
“I think that’s Industrial Nightmare in downtown Jeff!” Gina screeched.
“Is that right?” Savvy asked the driver.
The driver, who was dressed in realistic zombie garb, nodded.
“Well then, let’s go! What are you waiting for?” Heather cried out, pointing at the guy’s hearse driving off.
“I was told I would have six passengers and I only count five,” the driver explained.
The girls looked around at each other.
“Where the fuck is Karen?” Kyle asked.
“Shit. I’ll go get her,” Savvy grumbled, making her way out of the hearse.
“Hurry, Savvy! We can’t lose this challenge!” Gina cried out.
Savvy found Karen in the kitchen, nervously sipping a cup of mocha latte.
“Karen? What the fuck are you doing? We have to go!” Savvy screeched.
Karen sighed, not meeting Savvy’s angry gaze.
“I am too scared to go through haunted houses. Besides, it wouldn’t be too bad working for Johnny for a week…”
Savvy stared at Karen. She saw Karen’s mouth moving, but couldn’t bring herself to care what the hell was coming out of it. She just knew that the bag of douche standing in front of her had to get in the hearse.
“Get in the God damned hearse now!” Savvy dangerously muttered.
Karen backed away, shaking her head fearfully. Savvy made her way toward her, planning on dragging Karen out by the hair if she had to. Heather and Gina appeared at just that moment, both of them with murderous anger flashing in their eyes.
“Come on, Karen, let’s go!” Gina exclaimed, seizing Karen’s arm.
“I don’t want to, I’m scared!” Karen screeched.
“Believe it or not, we are, too,” Heather mumbled, taking Karen’s other arm.
“No!” Karen yelled.
“Grab her feet, Savvy, grab her feet!” Gina cried out.
Savvy took Karen’s feet and the three angry girls carried Karen bodily out to the hearse. They tossed her inside, knocking the cameraman over who cursed as he picked up his camera.
“My bad,” Gina laughed.
“Let’s go!” Heather and Savvy yelled to the driver.
The driver slammed on the gas and the hearse sped out of the driveway, with Gina barely able to close the back door.
Karen curled up into a ball next to Kyle, blowing her nose furiously as tears trickled down her annoying cheeks. Kyle scooted away from her, but she moved with him until he was pinned between her and the Plexiglas divider between the driver and the back of the car.
“What did you do?” Kyle mouthed to Gina.
She shrugged and sighed. “Karen, are you really that scared?”
Karen only nodded and blew her nose. Gina sighed. “You don’t even want to try and beat the boys? A week of servitude sounds pretty sucky.”
“Not really. Serving Johnny for a week would be… fun,” Karen sniffed with a hiccup as she wiped her face.
“Johnny’s so hot,” Gina smiled, not realizing what Karen was saying but just reveling in hearing Johnny’s name.
Heather and Savvy stared at Karen then gave each other a fearful look. Did she say what they thought she just said? Oh, no…
“Dude, that place was pretty cool… didn’t you like the Baxter Avenue Morgue, Preston?” Wee-Man asked, clapping his overlarge friend on the back.
Preston was shaking and looked a little pale. “No.”
“Smile!” Bam yelled, clicking a picture of the group as they walked toward the hearse from the building. Preston squeaked in surprise and chased angrily after Bam in his panda suit.
“What’s the next clue?” Knoxville ran over and asked the hearse driver. The driver handed Knoxville a slip of paper which he read aloud to the rest of the guys.
“Fearful shouts, screams, and yells; Out in a field where there’s nowhere to hide. If you fear the unknown, then you dare not come inside. A maze full of frights and fears is what awaits you here,” Knoxville read.
“Sounds like a corn field maze or something,” Steve-O pointed out.
Pontius pulled out a folder and thumbed through it.
“What is that?” Bam asked, snatching the folder from Pontius.
“When I heard what the challenge was, I snuck on-line and researched the local spooky attractions. I figured that it wasn’t fair that the girls are from around here and would know all the places… so I wanted to give us a leg-up,” Pontius explained.
“Is that cheating?” Knoxville asked with a smile.
“Hey, I didn’t hear any rules against it,” Steve-O chimed in, taking the folder from Bam. After looking through it for a moment, he pulled out a brochure for Field of Screams. “I bet this is it!”
He showed the driver the brochure and the driver nodded, firing up the hearse.
“Let’s go, guys!” Steve-O cried out, climbing into the hearse.
“I don’t want to go in,” Gina moaned, staring up at the creepy façade of the Haunted Hotel.
“Gina! We already made it through Industrial Nightmare, how much worse can this be?” Heather asked.
“But, my mom used to work at Industrial Nightmare, so that place doesn’t bother me as much. I’ve never been here before,” Gina sighed.
Karen was shivering, having still not recovered from the Industrial Nightmare.
“Well, how are we going to get our ticket stubs if you’re not going in?” Kyle asked. “I sure as hell am not being some dude’s servant for a week. Your ass is going in!” He took Gina by the arm and pulled her toward the entrance.
“Hold on, hold on… I have an idea,” Gina stated, yanking her arm out of Kyle’s grasp.
She walked over to a large group of teenagers who were standing in line waiting to get tickets.
“Hey guys, how are you doing?” Gina asked them loudly.
The group stared at her, wondering what was going on.
“I got five bucks for each of you if you do me a little favor,” she smiled.
“What kind of favor?” one of the teens questioned suspiciously.
Gina glanced back at Kyle and the girls and laughed at their confused and apprehensive stares. Gina gestured for the group to gather around her in a football-style huddle. She whispered her plan to them and squealed with excitement at their acceptance. She waved in happiness at the group and trotted back over to Kyle and the girls.
“What did you do?” Savvy asked, her eyes squinting with acute suspicion.
“Don’t worry, I have everything under control,” Gina smiled, “we are getting the ticket stubs in a few minutes without going through the damn thing.”
“How? Did you pay those people for their stubs or something?” Courtney asked.
Gina nodded as she sat down on the curb to wait. “As soon as the ticket taker tears their tickets, they are bringing me the stubs and I am handing over the cash.”
Kyle started a slow clap. “Wow, you actually came up with a good plan. I guess you aren’t as dumb as you look.”
“Thanks,” Gina spat out sarcastically.
One of the girls from the teenaged group tapped Gina on the shoulder and handed her a wad of ticket stubs.
“Thank you so much!” Gina spouted, counting out six five dollar bills for the girl. “Wow, that was a great haunted house, don’t you think? I was scared out of my pants!” Gina laughed as she turned and snapped a picture of the group in front of the building. They all piled into the hearse and headed to their third destination. Kyle read the clue. Everyone pondered the answer for a few moments before Savvy cried out the answer.
“It’s Field of Screams!”
The two hearses pulled into the parking lot for the Field of Screams at the same time.
“What the fuck? I thought the dude said that the clues were in different order for each group! How the hell are they at the same one we are?” Steve-O yelled, pointing to the girl’s hearse.
“They must be going faster than we are,” Pontius mumbled.
“Shit, then we gotta book!” Dunn exclaimed.
The girls barely beat the guys to the ticket line, and managed to look triumphant as they puffed and panted.
“How are we at the same place?” Heather asked loudly. “That’s impossible.”
“Because we cheated our asses off at the last one,” Gina mumbled under her breath to Heather.
“How many have y’all gone through?” Bam asked the girls.
Gina held up two fingers with a proud smirk.
“Two? How? We ran like hell and only got through one,” Knoxville said, starting to get worried about the outcome of the challenge.
“Magic,” Gina retorted, winking.
The girls got into the maze first and they all took off running, determined to beat the guys.
Heather slowed and looked around. “I’m gonna go and see if I can find the way through this thing… I want to get out of here as quick as possible.” She looked scared but determined.
“Yes, run hoe bag, run!” Kyle yelled at her as she ran in the opposite direction, crouching low just incase she got spooked.
Ignoring Kyle she continued running her way through the maze, bending, breaking, and tearing the lower leaves on cornstalks in a makeshift effort to keep track of where she turned or went straight. Five minutes into her running she heard the crunching of someone or something running through the corn field.
“Come on, this way!” Gina screeched, running. Turning, she found she was already alone. “Hey!”
She saw Karen round a corner behind her and tried to duck down so as not to be spotted. Too late.
“Gina! We all got separated!”
“Thank you, Captain Obvious,” Gina grumbled, angry that she was stuck with Karen.
“Which way do we go?” Karen asked, hugging herself and shivering slightly. “I think we should go this way because I saw-”
“Be quiet!” Gina hissed. She was scared out of her mind, just waiting for an axe murderer to pop out of the corn stalks and chop her head off. Now, she was annoyed on top of being afraid and realized that a chopped-off head would be a small price to pay to rid her of the nerve-grating sound of Karen’s voice.
“What was that?” Gina gasped.
“I didn’t hear anything that sounded like the demented chuckle of a crazed psycho bloodthirsty man-eating chainsaw killer. No siree Bob, I did not,” Karen mumbled, clutching Gina’s arm for dear life. “I didn’t hear anything.”
Gina sighed, trying to get a grip on herself, rolling her eyes. She heard the sound of someone running clumsily through the corn stalks. Turning around quickly, Gina screamed as a panda bear came running straight toward her and Karen. The panda pushed Gina to the ground and grabbed Karen, tossing her over his shoulder and carrying her off through the corn stalks.
“Was that Gina?” Knoxville asked, hearing Gina’s frantic scream.
“I don’t know,” Pontius grumbled. “Does this look familiar to you? I think we’ve passed this thing before… Knoxville?” Pontius turned. Knoxville was gone.
Gina pulled herself to her feet, brushing herself off.
“Fucking Bam,” she muttered angrily.
“Gina!”
Gina turned around, spying a frantic Karen racing toward her.
“Hey, Gina,” a soothing voice spoke from behind Gina. Gina looked back and saw Johnny walking toward her. She smiled broadly, turning toward him. Karen beat Gina to him, however, leaping on him.
“Oh my God, Johnny, I was so scared! Help me get through this!” she spluttered, practically climbing up Johnny’s torso. “He’s coming after me!”
Gina stood back, clenching and unclenching her fists. “Not again,” she muttered.
“Get off of me,” Johnny muttered, trying to pry Karen’s fingers off his arm.
Gina finally got up the nerve to say something and opened her mouth to do so when a pair of arms scooped her up around her waist and carried her away through the corn.
“Bam, fucking put me down, you dick!” Gina screeched after recognizing the arms around her waist as the panda bear suit.
Bam howled with laughter as he raced through the stalks, Gina kicking and screaming in frustrated anger. Bam ran into a clearing where Courtney’s carefully-placed foot tripped him up. Gina landed painfully hard on top of Kyle. Heather and Savvy grabbed Gina’s arms and pulled her up while Courtney pulled Kyle up.
“Come on, Gina, we found the way out,” Savvy whispered so Bam wouldn’t hear. He was lying on the ground, moaning softly. The group snuck away, then took off running. They reached the exit of the maze.
“Are we all here?” Heather asked, pulling out the camera.
“Where’s Karen?” Savvy groaned, throwing her hands in the air.
Gina sighed, not wanting to think about it. “She’s with… Johnny. Last time I saw her, she was climbing up him like he was some sort of ladder.”
Savvy and Heather glanced at each other while Gina started down at the ground.
“I’ll go find her,” Courtney grumbled. Before she could step away, Dunn, Bam, Pontius, Steve-O, and Johnny came running around the corner, Karen clinging to Johnny’s arm.
“Shit!” Dunn yelled. “They fucking beat us!”
“But we have one of theirs!” Bam pointed out. “They can’t leave without her.”
Karen’s eyes twinkled, she liked being the center of attention. In her mind, the guys were fighting over her, and that made her feel important. She failed to notice the hurt look in Gina’s eyes as she watched Karen nuzzle Johnny’s arm.
“Karen, get the fuck over here, we have to go,” Heather said, her voice full of angry venom.
“I can’t. Johnny doesn’t want me to go,” Karen gushed, gripping Johnny tighter.
“Like hell I don’t,” Johnny mumbled, trying to push Karen away.
“Yeah, if we wanted a hostage, I don’t think you would be our top candidate,” Pontius said to Karen, looking past her and eyeing Savvy hungrily. Savvy blew him a kiss.
“Get off me, damn!” Johnny finally spouted, shoving Karen roughly.
“Come on, Karen, we need to go,” Courtney said, grabbing her arm and dragging her to the exit.
Johnny looked up and noticed that Gina had turned her back to the group, talking exclusively to Kyle. He was rubbing her shoulder and glancing past her to Knoxville. Kyle’s eyes narrowed in anger, as if whatever him and Gina were discussing wouldn’t have to be discussed if not for him. Knoxville stared back at Kyle questionably, yearning to know what they were talking about. The girls raced out of the maze, the guys having to stay behind and wait for Preston and Wee-Man, who were missing from their group.
The girls piled into the limo, excited that they would obviously be the first group back to the house.. Gina was staring moodily out the window, wanting to be as far away from Karen as possible. Karen wouldn’t stop talking about how Johnny was her knight in shining armor, his arm had been so warm as she held it, he had told her not to be afraid, that he would protect her, and that he wanted nothing more than to be there for her and make her feel safe…
Silent tears slid down Gina’s cheeks as she stared out the window, trying not to listen to Karen. She wanted nothing more than to smash the girl’s annoying face in, and then to never talk to Johnny again. If Johnny had said all those things to Karen in the maze, then… Gina didn’t know what she would do.
“Dude, we are so going to lose,” Dunn grumbled, his chin resting in his hands.
“No, we’re not. As soon as Pontius and Steve-O find Preston and Wee-Man, we can get the hell out of here. Now shut the fuck up and wait,” Knoxville replied, angrily kicking the ground.
“Why the hell are you so mad?” Bam asked, the head of his panda suit tucked under his arm.
“I just don’t want to lose, that’s all,” Knoxville mumbled, turning away from them. The truth was, his mind was elsewhere as he wondered what Gina was thinking. She had seemed perturbed at Karen’s clinging to him earlier. What was she discussing with Kyle away from the group? Kyle had glared at him, as if what they were talking about were Knoxville’s own fault. Knoxville had a feeling Karen was the source of all this mess. Had Gina assumed something about him and Karen? He had no interest in Karen whatsoever, and he hoped Gina realized that.
“They are not in this fucking maze anywhere!” Steve-O’s raspy voice pulled Knoxville from his troubled thoughts.
“Dude, they fucking have to be!” Dunn exclaimed.
“They’re not! We looked everywhere!” Steve-O sighed.
“Well, we have to find them. We are going to lose this contest if we don’t get going,” Knoxville sighed. “I am going to go to the hearse and try to call Preston with my cell phone. I am getting shit reception in here.”
“Good idea,” Bam said.
Knoxville headed out to the parking lot, holding up his cell phone and trying to get reception. Before he found acceptable reception, he was bombarded with fan girls.
“Oh my God, you’re Johnny Knoxville! Sign my tit, please!” a girl pleaded, pulling her shirt down.
“Hi, ladies, great to see you. Great to see you. I don’t have a pen… or the desire… to sign anything right now. Buy one off Ebay. Come on, I am in a hurry. Get out of my way,” Knoxville fought his way through the girls, finally making it to the hearse. He climbed in and locked the door.
“God damn,” he grumbled, dialing Preston’s number on the cell phone which was finally receiving a usable signal. He heard a phone ringing in the hearse beside him.
“Dammit!” he screeched. There was a pile of clothes beside him which he recognized as Preston and Wee-Man’s.
“What the hell?” he mumbled. “Where are they with no clothes?”
The driver cleared his throat and pointed out the windshield. Knoxville climbed forward and pressed his face to the Plexiglas. Preston was chasing Wee-Man around the building, the two of them wearing nothing but underwear. The fan girls were gushing and snapping pictures.
“Motherfucker,” Johnny groaned, dialing Dunn’s number on the cell phone.
“Hold on, guys, Knoxville’s calling me, he might have found them,” Dunn said, answering the cell phone.
“They are out here in the parking lot, chasing each other in their underwear,” Knoxville sighed into the phone.
“Why?” Dunn asked.
“There is a shitload of fan girls out here, gushing over them.”
“Oh. Well how are the rest of us going to get out there?”
“I am going to see if the driver can go around the back. Hold on.”
Knoxville asked the driver if there was a back entrance. The driver nodded and drove the hearse around to the back of the building. The guys met the limo behind the building, all of them piling in.
“Let’s go get Preston and Wee-Man,” Dunn groaned, bracing himself for the onslaught of female attention awaiting them around the corner.
The limo pulled out into the parking lot, the girls spying it and swarming around it.
“Who’s going out there?” Pontius asked, looking around at everyone.
“Well… I think you should send Bam out because he has the panda suit. They won’t know who he is,” Knoxville pointed out.
Bam sighed. “But I am the prettiest out of all of us. Fan girls can smell sexy, they will know its me. I will be mauled.”
“That’s a sacrifice I am willing to make, man,” Steve-O laughed, shoving Bam out the back door.
Bam barely made his way to Preston and Wee-Man, battling the ferocious fan girls the whole way. The three made it back to the limo, and the driver floored the limo out of the parking lot.
“Did we seriously just win this little challenge?” Courtney voiced, climbing out of the hearse.
“Hell yeah we did!” Heather laughed.
“Thanks to Gina’s cheating ways,” Savvy chimed in, clapping Gina on the shoulder.
Gina shot her an unconvincing smile and walked away into the house.
“What’s wrong with her?” Heather asked Savvy quietly.
“I think Karen pissed her off back at the Field of Screams,” Savvy replied.
Just then, the guy’s hearse pulled up and they all piled out, looking sour when they realized they had lost.
“Did you guys have one more haunted house to go through? How did you do it so fast?” Kyle asked the guy group.
“We decided to say fuck it because you guys said you had already been through two… there would be no point-”
“Well, that’s too bad!” Trent’s voice boomed from the porch. “According to the footage we have been watching of the girls, they cheated on one of their stops and didn’t go through the haunted house. Therefore, if you had gone to the last house… you could have one by default.”
“Holy shit, no way,” Dunn exclaimed.
