A few hours before sunrise, the adults on the base returned to their homes, the ones with children went to the mess hall to collect their children. And it was in this state that both patriarchs of the Bryar and Toro families came to the mess hall to find their children curled up on mats together. The two boys had managed to keep taking shifts for a few hours, but then when they had received word that it was merely a short in the alarm wiring that had caused the alerts, they had both agreed that it might be best for them to try to both get some sleep as they had school in the morning, so Bob had shifted Natalie closer to the middle of the two mats and lay on the other side of her, wrapping his arms around her waist in a protective manner while Ray lay on the other side of her, their hands clasped tightly together.
The two older men had become friends at the party earlier that night, and found out that they shared a common interest in amateur metalwork, so they had instantly hit it off, vowing that they would chat over coffee sometime. So when they walked into the mess hall over to the corner where their children where sleeping soundly, they both chuckled seeing the closeness of the teens.
“Well, Joseph, I think that solves your little question about how the kids will get along. It seems that they’re already pretty close.”
“Yes, although I’m not too fond of having someone that close to my Nat.”
“Oh don’t worry about Ray, he’s a good kid. Certainly less of a worry than some of the other hooligans that go to their school. I still wish they would have a school on the base for our kids. But with so few of them, the base thinks the money could be used for other more useful purposes.”
Joseph scoffed at the mention of having more useful purposes for money than to use on their children. He highly doubted that bombs and tanks were more important than their children, but he didn’t voice his opinion as he was still one of the highest ranking officers on the base.
“I’m not trying to say anything about your son, I suppose I’m just a little over protective of Natalie sometimes. Ever since she was born, she’s been special. My little girl. But don’t think that this will get you any leeway with your job. Ray seems like a good kid.”
Samuel had begun to chuckle at the slightly starry-eyed expression on his friend’s face as he had talked about his daughter. He nodded as he was warned that being friends wouldn’t earn him any favoritism, and for that he respected his friend even more. So when Joseph commented on his son, Samuel nodded with a bit of fatherly pride that his son had turned out to be such a stand up kid. He laughed lightly and walked over to stand beside the mat where Ray was laying, with a smirk on his face as he put a finger over his lip at his friend.
“On your feet soldier!”
Almost as if he had been shot, Ray jumped up, his hand automatically going to a salute at his forehead. The combination of the shout and the sudden movement from beside her caused Natalie to wake up and glance around confusedly. Although she heard the laughter coming from her dad as well as Mr. Toro and slowly began to calm down. Ray had shook himself out of the fog of sleep after hearing the laughter from the two fathers, and ran his hands over his face, tiredly while muttering a curse under his breath. He held out a hand to help Natalie stand, and she slowly stood glancing around the mess hall before walking over to her father who was still chuckling and gave him a quick hug, glad to see him after the panic from earlier.
“So, what happened with the sirens and whistles?”
“It was just a short circuit in the wiring. Gave the whole base quite the scare. Even the top dogs didn’t know what was going on, so they had everyone on top alert as it wasn’t a drill.”
Natalie smiled at Ray’s father who had answered and covered her mouth to hide the yawn that escaped without warning. She leaned her head against her father’s chest, wanting to just curl up and go back to sleep. She felt the reassuring arms of her father wrap around her, rubbing circles on her back and thought for sure that she would fall asleep standing there again.
“If you want, Helen can write an excuse for Raymond for school. I might let these two sleep in a little later tomorrow and do the same for them. But come on, let’s get the kids back to their own beds.”
Ray had woken up Bob, with some difficulty as he seemed to be a heavy sleeper, and the two boys stood, both looking dead on their feet. Ray’s dad nodded with a smile, starting for the door of the mess hall with the two boys close behind. Worried that she might fall asleep while walking, Joseph picked up Natalie and carried her out of the building, smiling to himself as she wrapped her arms around his neck and went back to sleep.
The group walked back towards the housing portion of the base together, the two boys barely muttering anything to each other, as they both seemed to be sleepwalking at the moment, while the adults continued to chat softly so as to keep from being heard by the boys and to keep from waking Natalie. When they reached the Toros’ house, which was the closest to the mess hall, Joseph said his goodnights to Samuel and Ray, with the promise of having his wife drop off an excuse for Ray to miss the first few classes of the next school day, before continuing on his way to their house. He had become quite close friends with the elder Toro, and grinned at their own spot of fun.
