Cara found herself driving back into Summerset at almost eleven o’clock at night, the town being almost a ghost town on a Tuesday night this late. But she knew where she was going and she made her way through the sleeping little town and found herself pulling into the driveway of her old house. It looked almost the same as when she had left promising never to return. The yard was still filled with various pieces of machinery that her stepfather tinkered around with in his spare time, and there were more cars in the garage and yard than any family could possibly want / need.
As she got out of her car, the garage light came on and a head poked out of the back door, revealing a confused face. Just a moment later there was a slam, as the back door was slung open and shut as a bubbly teenager rushed out and almost tackled Cara in an embrace.
“Oh my god, Cara! I didn’t know you were going to be coming over! I have Taylor over, because Daddy’s over at Uncle Vernon’s house playing cards. It’s a new tradition that they started up this past summer. Please tell me that you’re going to be around for a while. Oh, I want you to meet Taylor. But please don’t tell Daddy he was over. If he finds out I’ve had Taylor over, I’m toast. You packed a bag! Awesome, Cara! You can stay in our room again. I don’t think you want Jake’s room. Daddy hasn’t been able to clean it out yet. Crazy, huh? He was always harping about keeping the house clean and not hoarding everything away, and yet he hasn’t gone through Jake’s room or even Mom’s things.”
Cara tried to keep up with the teenager’s rapid speech, but about half-way through, she just gave up trying. She just smiled and followed as Janie pulled her into the house, glancing around at the new kitchen before she saw a boy stick his head around the corner of the doorway into the living room, as if scared he might be discovered.
“Janie, are we safe?” The boy whispered, his brown eyes flitting around the room curiously. But when he saw that it was just Janie and Cara, he sighed before straightening and walking into the kitchen. He was about six foot tall, with a mop of curly dark brown hair and he looked like a little kid, just a lot taller.
Cara smiled at the boy and gave Janie a quick glance before holding out a hand to the boy. “You must be Taylor. I’m Cara, Janie’s sister.” He nodded before ignoring the outstretched hand and pulling Cara into a hug. Cara actually laughed for the first time in several days at the action, and felt better than she had in a while.
“Good to meet you, Cara. I’ve heard Janie talk about you, but haven’t gotten to meet you yet. Um, you’re not going to tell Clyde that I was here, are you? I mean, not that we’re breaking the rules exactly, he just doesn’t like me visiting when there’s not anyone else here.” Taylor still seemed to be a little suspicious of Cara, not knowing whose side Janie’s mysterious sister would be on.
Cara laughed and shook her head. “Well there’s someone else here now, so you’re not breaking that rule either. I’ll just forget that you were here when I showed up. How does that sound?”
Taylor pulled Cara into a tight hug with a bear laugh that rumbled in his chest. “Awesome! I like you already. Good to know that I have at least one ally in this family. I swear Clyde scares the shit out of me sometimes.”
“Good, I would hate to know that I was going through all that trouble for nothing.”
Everyone turned towards the back door, as none other than Cara’s stepfather walked in the back door, a frown on his face seeing Taylor there, and confusion at seeing Cara. He hadn’t seen her in years, not since the funerals for Grace and Jacob. He smiled to Cara, before turning his glare back to Taylor.
“Oh, hello Mr. Tyrone. Good to see you again. I just dropped by to see if Janie had the notes for English. I had a field trip and missed class today.” Taylor looked positively terrified of the older man, and Cara could instantly sympathize.
“Hey Clyde. Taylor just showed up not two seconds before you did. I was talking with Janie when he called to ask if he could drop by and pick up the notes. I figured that since she wasn’t alone that it shouldn’t be any trouble. Besides, I hadn’t met Janie’s boyfriend yet, and was curious.”
Cara could tell by the frown on Clyde’s face that he didn’t really believe them, but wasn’t going to start an argument while they had company. Besides, he was quite obviously curious as to why Cara was here. He hadn’t seen, or even expected to see, Cara in years. “Taylor good night, and go home. If you need the English notes, get them from Janie tomorrow at school. Janie, say goodnight.”
Janie frowned at her dad, before taking Taylor’s arm and leading him out to his car, quite obviously so she could at least get a kiss goodnight. Cara shook her head with a grin, watching her sister walk out the door before turning her attention back to her stepfather again. “So, Clyde, surprised to see me?”
“That’s one way to put it. What brings you home? I hope those boys you’ve been living with haven’t done anything to hurt you. They haven’t, have they? Because I’ll drive out there right now and kill them if they have.”
Cara shook her head, a few tears coming to her eyes again at the mention of the boys. “No, not that. Sort of the opposite really. I just came from a funeral, Clyde. Mikey killed himself. I didn’t want to stay at the house again. Can I stay a while here? At least until I get myself straightened out?”
“You know you always have a home here, Cara Lyn. I thought you knew that. My house is always open for my kids. And I don’t care how old you get, Cara Lyn, you’re still one of my babies. I’m assuming that the little blue thing out there is yours?”
Cara shocked herself when she didn’t flinch at the name, but perhaps being back in Summerset was making it more normal, whatever normal was. At the playful question about her car, Cara laughed and nodded, feeling a happiness spread over her at the laughter. It seemed like forever since she had laughed, and already she had laughed twice just since she had come back to Summerset. Perhaps it was a healing place for her after so many years of being away in the world with the hurt.
Clyde walked to the back door and held it open, sticking his head out to get a glance at Janie and Taylor. “Janet Elizabeth Morgan, that has been quite long enough for a simple goodnight. Now get in here before I have to come out and get you myself. And we both know you wouldn’t want that, now would you?”
Cara could hear her sister’s muffled answer, and covered her giggle with a hand. Yes, this was how she remembered it. Overbearing parents and rebellious kids. “I see nothing much has changed. I was actually wondering ---“
Cara was cut off by the sound of her cell phone ringing. She pulled it from her purse and frowned at the ID before putting it back in her bag without answering it. She really didn’t feel like talking to Frankie at the moment. She just needed some time to herself. And reminders of her life back at West Cran were not what she was wanting. Clyde must have noticed the ignoring of her cell phone, because he raised an eyebrow in suspicion. Perhaps a trip to Reverend Lovegood’s house might be in order for tonight, rather than tomorrow morning like he had first thought when he had found Cara back at his house.
Janie came back into the house, obviously still a little upset at Clyde for his treatment of Taylor. She stopped in front of Clyde and frowned up at him. “You know, Daddy, you could have at least tried to be a little nicer to Taylor. It’s not like we’re having sex or something. Jesus, sometimes I think you want me to just live here forever and be a lonely old maid or something. Cara lives with three guys, and you didn’t seem to put up too much of an argument there.”
“Two guys, Janie.” Cara corrected her sister without thinking, because thinking would mean actually admitting that Mikey was gone forever and not coming back to her. She knew that eventually she would have to come to terms with the death and such, but for now she was happy to be away from the craziness and to have at least some semblance of normalcy in her life.
“Okay, two guys, whatever. But still. Daddy, why didn’t you let Taylor stay a little longer? It’s not even curfew yet. You even work with his dad. So why don’t you give Taylor a break already? You’ve been against him the entire time we’ve been dating. So please just give it up already.” Janie shrugged off Cara’s correction and turned back to Clyde eagerly arguing with him. It seemed that particular trait must run in her family as well, for Cara could remember more than plenty of times when she had argued with Clyde herself.
“I have nothing against the young Mr. York. He seems like a fine young man. But I do not want you to be hanging around with him alone. That will get you into more trouble than just getting grounded or such. Believe me on this, Janie. And if I ever find out that you’ve been having him over when I’m not home, you will wish you had never met any boy at all.” Clyde turned back to Cara with the faintest of smiles. “I have to go run an errand or two, keep an eye on this one for me, will you?”
Cara nodded, fully intent on letting Janie do precisely what she wanted as soon as Clyde got far enough away from the house to where he wouldn’t know anything. “Of course. But errands at this time of night? Nothing’s wrong, is there?”
Clyde shook his head. “No, nothing’s wrong. I just have to go see Reverend Lovegood, he hasn’t been feeling well lately and I always go visit him at night before bed to help him work on the sermons that he’s looking forward to doing. The man is a miracle. But then I’m going to grab some groceries for us and I’ll be back in a few hours.” He turned to Janie with a frown. “No crazy ideas, Janet. And I mean it.”
Just as Clyde was starting to head towards the door, the doorbell rang. Clyde smiled as he saw who was on the other side of the door and pulled the younger man into the kitchen. “Raymond, good to see you. I didn’t know you were going to be coming, or I wouldn’t have promised Reverend Lovegood to check in on him tonight. But if you stick around long enough I should be back in a few hours at the latest.”
Ray smiled at Clyde, still feeling something a bit off with the older man. “Thanks, Clyde. I’ll just stick around then.” Ray saw Cara as he walked into the living room and smiled a bit brighter. “Cara, I didn’t expect to see you here! Are you okay? I mean, with today and everything.”
Just as Ray was crossing to the couch to join Cara, Janie came back through the doorway and rushed over throwing her arms around Ray’s neck, nearly tackling him to the floor. “Ray! I didn’t realize you were coming over so soon. I mean, sure I could have used the help with getting Daddy to let Taylor stay over a little longer, but at least now I have you for company. You and Cara, of course. She just shows up on the carport tonight with a bag asking to stay a little while. Can you believe that, Ray?”
Janie could tire anyone out, even someone with the strongest patience, but she was easily wearing on both Cara and Ray with her incessant chattering. Ray sighed before going to sit beside Cara on the couch. “Janie, care to give me and Cara a moment to chat? I just want to make sure that your sister is okay and all. She’s had a really rough week.”
Janie raised an eyebrow at Ray’s annoyance and request. Normally he was friendly and didn’t get upset with her as easily as he seemed to have this time. Plus, what did he mean she had had a rough week? How did he even know? Then it hit her, they were obviously back talking with each other. She huffed off towards the kitchen, fully intent on complaining to Clyde, but found that he had already left, so she turned and made her way back to her bedroom, slamming the door and taking out her cell phone to call Taylor and talk to him, perhaps even make up a place for them to meet.
Cara smiled gratefully at Ray as Janie went off to her bedroom. “Thank you, Ray. I don’t think I could have handled much more of her incessant chattering. I love her, but really I don’t think I could have possibly been that bad as a teenager, right?”
“Oh, I don’t know. You had your moments, Cara. In fact, I remember this one time that you ---“ Ray laughed as he teased Cara, playfully rubbing his arm as she hit him. “Oooh, a love tap. You should know that I like it rough.”
Cara laughed at Ray’s comments. She had missed laughter and joking in the past week since Mikey’s death. And now that she was at Summerset, it seemed to be coming like second nature again. “Kinky, Ray. I never pegged you for the masochist type. Maybe it’s just the false rocker appearance you tried to keep up in high school. But then again, the hair did make you a bit less intimidating.” Cara giggled as she playfully gave a bit of his hair a light tug.
“Just what I was trying to do. Glad to know I fooled at least you.” Ray grinned as he moved closer to whisper in her ear. “I’m not the masochist type. I prefer the other side of the table.” And before Cara could react, he moved and kissed her on the lips, a fierce and demanding kiss, completely different from anything else she had known, even with Frankie. She reached her hand that had been pulling his hair around his neck and pulled him closer to her, feeling a strange need surging throughout her.
Cara was the first to recover and pulled back, embarrassed that she had let herself get a little lost in the kiss. She hadn’t ever thought of doing such a thing with Ray, but at the moment, the couch was looking rather appealing, and his dress shirt was looking a little too tight, especially with the small glimpse of skin she could see from the opening at the neck where the first few buttons were undone, no doubt very shortly after having left the funeral.
That smallest of thoughts brought her mind back to the current events, and she jumped up from the couch and started towards the kitchen, only to be stopped by a hand on her shoulder spinning her around as Ray’s mouth once again claimed her own. Her arms went up around his neck almost against her will. He flipped her over onto the couch roughly, before pulling her arms up above her head with one hand. His other hand skimmed down over her side and found its way to the bottom hem of her skirt and roughly jerked it up, smirking as he noticed no underwear.
“Kinky little bitch. You might just have to be punished for that bad behavior.” Ray moved to push up her blouse before bending down and kissing her again, this time biting on her bottom lip, causing her to squirm a little.
“Ray, please ---“ That was all Cara could get out, as she seemed to have been driven insane by Ray and his touch and kiss and just the feeling itself. For the first time all week, she felt alive again. Alive and on fire. And all because of Ray.
Ray pulled back and raised an eyebrow with a smirk at Cara’s plea. “Please what, Cara?” Ray moved to place himself over her, his less than subtle erection resting just outside of her entrance, causing her to let out a small sound. “You can say it, Cara. What is it that you want? Is it this?” Ray moved just a slight movement and yet she felt it almost all the way through her body, a tingling warmth spreading throughout her body, but settling in the lower pit of her abdomen.
“Please Ray, just get on with it. You know exactly what I’m wanting, please.” Cara moved her head to latch onto Ray’s mouth, frantically needing what it seemed only Ray could give at the moment. The surprise must have caused Ray to loosen his grip on her hands because she was able to pull them out of his grip and she moved one to wrap around his neck, holding him to her, and the other to try and undo his pants and get rid of the offensive piece of clothing.
Ray was pleasantly shocked at how well things were going. He already had her desperate with need. And only after just getting to the house. It was all going very well according to plan. Grace and the elders would be highly proud of him for his little acts. He noticed Cara move her hands to trying to undo his pants, and moved his own hands to quickly dispose of the clothing, leaving him nude from the waist down.
Without any other preamble, Ray moved and thrust himself completely into her, causing Cara to gasp at the flash of pain that still seemed to come from sex. She had known that it would be a little painful with her first time, but afterwards? She guessed she had just blindly assumed it would all be hot warmth and happiness after that first time. But when she managed a glimpse down, she realized why there was pain still without this being her first time. Ray was ... well, he was well enough endowed that it was still a bit of a stretch for her. But Ray began to move and soon enough all thought aside from the swirl of pleasure was promptly swept out of her mind.
A while later, Cara rolled off Ray, to almost fall into the floor, only being caught by Ray’s arms around her waist. She felt the need for a shower, and thus she would need to get up and cleaned before Clyde came back from his errands. Besides, she had the urge to have cereal and milk. It was probably one of the weirdest post-coital cravings ever, but then again, she had already had the cigarette-more sex craving, and had in fact given in to that craving more than once already in the time.
It was a little odd to think that she hadn’t been terribly interested in sex in any way just a few short weeks ago. And yet now, she was going multiple times with her best friend from high school on her parents’ couch with her sister in the other room. Things were definitely getting interesting for her, to say the least.
Janie heard the noises coming from the living room and muttered a curse towards her stepfather. If he hadn’t been such a stubborn ass, she could have been with Taylor having fun herself rather than hearing her sister and one of her best friends going at it in the living room. She was definitely not going to sit on the couches any time soon. Janie pulled out her cell phone and quickly dialed Taylor’s number, smiling as she heard his familiar voice on the other end.
Ray heard Janie on her cell phone, no doubt talking to Taylor, and he made a mental note to make a few calls himself when he left here. After all, Clyde would be back soon enough. And despite the older man liking him, Ray had to admit, Clyde Tyrone scared the shit out of him. So he definitely didn’t want to be around and looking all post-coital with his daughter, despite however Clyde might react.
So rather than waiting around much longer, Ray simply pulled his pants back on, and shrugged the dress shirt back on as well, although not bothering to button it back up, before heading into the kitchen where he walked up behind Cara and wrapped his arms around her waist.
“Hey Carabear, I should get out of here. Don’t want to have Clyde walk in on us, or even just be here when Clyde comes back in general. Give me a call tomorrow, and we can put something together. I’ve missed you, Carabear.” Ray turned Cara around and kissed her hard on the lips before moving to leave with a smirk on his face at the slightly drunk glaze on her eyes. He pulled out his cell phone and started the process of making a few phone calls as he left the Tyrone house.
Cara stood in the middle of the kitchen, feeling a little dumbfounded at everything that had just happened all of a sudden. First she feels at home in Summerset, holds an actual conversation with Clyde without getting upset or worse, and then she just has some of the most mind-blowing sex with someone she had always just considered her best friend from high school, who lived right around the block from her house. Life wasn’t getting any easier or less complicated, but hopefully it would be like the microwave dinners that you don’t even have to work on.
