Naida slipped gently from Jeremy’s grasp and moved to the bathroom, showering as quietly as she could. She sat on the edge of the tub for a minute and thought about all the events that had occurred over the last couple of days.
She had lost all she had loved and came to the one place she had believed would house her redeemer and ended up telling all those that she loved that it would be oh so easy to kill them. Her brother had returned and she had blamed everything on him. Yes, she had apologized to all of them, but she had so much to explain and had to find a way to make it up to all of them.
Sighing, she finished drying off and climbed shakily from the bathtub, walking on weakened legs into the bedroom and to her wardrobe, glancing to make sure that Jeremy was still asleep. She pulled out a blue dress and pulled it on before going to the bag she had brought with her and pulling out her specially made guarder holster.
She slipped it onto her right thigh and put the little gun into it, covering it easily with the knee length dress. She took the knife guarder on her left thigh and slipped the little blades into it. Her final guarder went just below the one that held the knives and held syringes with a sleeping draught made from the most potent ingredients of the deep. She didn’t think she would need of the weapons, but they had become a type of security blanket for her.
She ran a brush through her curly hair and glanced at the mirror. She had lost a lot of her luster over the last few months and no longer glowed that vibrant white of the ocean foam, but she was still beautiful with her curly knee length white blonde hair and pearl white skin. Her eyes were haunted, but still the beautiful blue of the spring skies just after a hurricane.
She sighed and walked over to Jeremy, laying a gently kiss on his sleeping brow, before walking out of the room and to the elevators. She stepped out of the elevators on the floor where Rick’s office was and started to have second thoughts about being up here. Maybe she should have waited for Jeremy to get up.
She was about to turn around and head back into the elevator when Spencer spotted her as he came out of Rick’s office. He looked around and then walked over to her, talking calmly. “Nay, hun, where’s Jeremy?”
“Downstairs.” Naida felt the fear run through her from her head to her toes and knew that this had been a bad idea. What would they do if they thought she was still mental?
“Downstairs?” All her fears came true as Spencer went for the syringe they all had been given in case Jeremy didn’t work. “Nay, I need to get you to the containment areas before something bad happens. I’m sorry about this.”
He moved toward her and Naida grabbed his arm, stepping to the side and pushing him to the ground, pinning him effectively. “He’s downstairs asleep, Spencer. I didn’t do anything to hurt him.”
“Rick!” Bill’s voice came from the elevators and Naida heard Rick come out of his room at the sound. She took the syringe from Spencer and pushed the plunger, sending the liquid onto the floor as Bill pulled his own. “Naida, don’t hurt him.”
“If you all would fucking listen to me! I’m not going to hurt him!” Naida was starting to panic. Could they not see that she was talking sense? Could they not see that it was her?
“Baby, it’s your Papa. Let go of Spencer.” Rick was closer than he had been a minute ago.
Naida released Spencer and dropped to the ground, rolling across the floor and coming up just in time to see Rick dive where she would have been with a syringe. She held her hands up and looked at the people around her. “Stop this! Listen to me! I’m okay! I’m not going to hurt anyone.”
Movement behind her caused her to dropped and spin her leg out, knocking Alex to the floor. She kicked the syringe away from him and did a back hand spring to land with her back to a window, as far from all of them as possible. She screamed for Jeremy in her head and heard, distantly, an answering call that almost scared her.
“Nay, it’s me, Alex.”
“I know who you are, asshole.” Naida’s fingers twitched for her to just touch her gun and she found her hand touching the material over the gun. “I’m okay now. Why can’t you all see that? Billy, do I look crazy? Do I act crazy?”
“Crazy people never think they’re crazy, Nay.” Bill began to move the syringe in a throwing fashion and Naida held her breath, not wanting to have to be put down like this.
The elevator door opened and Jeremy dove, half naked, at Bill, causing him to drop the syringe. “Stop!”
Everyone turned their eyes to Jeremy standing in front of the elevators, arms holding Bill from moving toward the syringe, in nothing but a pair of boxers. Rick was the first to recover. “What’s going on, Jeremy? Weren’t you supposed to be keeping her downstairs?”
Jeremy released Bill and stepped in front of Spencer, Rick, and Bill. As soon as he was clear of the others, Naida ran to him, wrapping her arms around his neck and crying into his shoulder. “They don’t believe me, Jeremy. Tell them.”
Jeremy wrapped his arms around Naida, catching her as she gasped and her feet came out from under her. She looked down and saw the scales start to move across her legs. She knew that it had to be bad if she was changing in the middle of the building, though she wasn’t changing into a mermaid.
She shoved Jeremy away from her for a moment and then crawled away from him. “Don’t, Jeremy.” She held her hand up as he tried to move toward her and looked down at her legs as they began to stitch together. “Alex, come here.”
Alex looked at Jeremy for conformation. “I don’t know about this, Alex, but I can tell you that’s she sane.”
Alex nodded and walked over to Naida, taking the hand she offered. Her back arched as soon as their hands touched and everyone gasped as her entire body broke out into scales. She looked at them and her pupils were the thin slits of a dragon, like Alex’s when he was angry. “Something’s wrong.”
“No shit.” Bill sat there and stared at his best friend, afraid for her life. “What do you feel, Nay?”
“Pain. Like boiling water running through my veins.” Naida screamed and clutches at Alex’s hand so hard that his screamed echoed hers. He fell to his knees beside her and watched her face and body began to change.
She felt her body start to change and let go of Alex’s hand enough to take her dress and guarders off, throwing them at Jeremy before her body buckled and she grabbed at Alex again.
She felt another hand take her left hand and looked up to see Hayley with red dragon eyes looking down at her. Naida opened her mouth to tell her thank you, but screamed again instead. Her back arched and she found a man she didn’t know holding her head, but his eyes were just as Alex’s and Hayley’s were, the eyes of a dragon.
She couldn’t think of anything else as the pain raged through her body and took her last ounce of humanity away from her. She felt the power build and threw it out, not knowing what to do with it.
Alex, Hayley, and the unknown man flew away from her, hitting the walls around her hard. She couldn’t feel the pain anymore, but that scalding water was still running through her veins, now a soothing sensation. She looked around and found Bill, Rick, and Jeremy looking at her with horror in their eyes.
She looked down at her body and screamed, or rather roared, as she was now in complete water dragon. She slithered across the room and found a mirror down the end of the hall, roaring at the thing she had become. She looked like Okeanos. She was a water serpent with blue scales the same shade as her mermaid fin. It was the one thing she had avoided over the last several months. The one power she had not wanted to admit she had.
She looked at Jeremy and saw pity in his eyes. He moved to her, seemingly without thinking, and ran his hand down her back, causing her to shudder. She stepped away from him and shook her head. She needed to think mermaid and there was only way to do that.
She looked around the room and found the water cooler, moving over to it and hitting it with her tail. She hit it over and over, but it didn’t fall. ‘Water.’ It was just a thought, but the unknown man seemed to know what she needed. He moved to the water cooler and allowed his hand to change into that of a dragon, cutting the top of the glass off easily. He picked the cooler up and poured it on her.
The moment the water touched her skin she thought of the ocean, of the palace she had spent the first few years of her childhood in. A soothing calm moved over her and she began to shiver as the scales became skin and her tail began to reform, showing her the beautiful blue fin she had loved so much as a child.
The unknown man took his overcoat off and put it around her shoulders, wrapping his arms around her and rubbing her back hard, trying to stop the shivering. She opened her mouth to protest and he spoke soothingly into her ear. “You’ll go into shock without another dragon near you after the first change back.”
“Who are you?” Naida found she had a voice, but it was ragged and sore.
“My name is Frank Iero. I’m Alex’s father.” Frank smiled down at her and smiled as she started to dry and her legs began to reform. They were pale compared to the dark arms he had wrapped around her.
She breathed in deep and choked a little. “You smell of sulfur.”
“Sorry about that. I just crawled from Hell. I came up here to see Rick and found you changing on the floor with Alex and the young lady over there struggling to keep you still.”
“Hayley. My name’s Hayley.” Naida looked up to see Hayley with a large bruise across her face, she was bleeding from a claw mark across her face. She must have looked stunned because Hayley merely shrugged. “It’s alright, Naida. It’ll heal in a few minutes. I’ve been hit by worse before. My biological father wasn’t the nicest of dragons in Hell.”
Frank looked up at her and frowned. “Your biological father?”
Hayley smiled and knelt on the other side of Naida, touching her gently. “Anthony Iero. I believe him to be your father too?”
Frank smiled and nodded. “I was wondering what daughter he was talking about when he spoke of you. It’s a pleasure to finally meet my little sister.”
“I hate to interrupt, Frank, but what the Hell just happened to my daughter?” Rick stepped over to them, but didn’t get too close to Naida, fear on his face.
“I don’t rightly know, Rick. That’s something you have to ask her.”
All eyes turned to Naida and she buried her head into Frank’s shoulder, shaking her head. “I can’t.”
“Come on, Nay, you can tell us.” Jeremy dropped to his knees in front of Naida and touched her leg gently. “We’ll still love you.”
Everyone nodded in agreement and Naida was forced to admit what she was hoping would not be true. “Every mermaid has a dark side, a dragon side. When something happens that causes that dark side to come out, the mermaid becomes that which she fears. But it can only happen after said mermaid uses her powers to kill so many people. I’ve done horrible things when my mind was lost. Killed so many. I was trying to avoid becoming the dragon, but when Spencer came at me, it took everything in me not to kill him.”
“Why didn’t you just shoot me?” Spencer held the guarder with the gun up. “You had the artillery.”
Naida looked at him and anger ran through her eyes. “Don’t piss me off, Spencer.” She felt her eyes go back to the dragon slits and gasped. “My gods! Will it not stop?!”
Frank held her tight to him. “Relax, Naida. Think about the ocean.”
She closed her eyes and thought about it and relaxed. She opened her eyes and looked back at Spencer. “If I had wanted you dead, I would have used my magic and made it as gruesome as possible, because there’s still that part of me that’s broken.”
“But Jeremy says you’re cured.”
“I am, but there’s always going to be that part of me that remembers the torture, the pain of losing Jon, the moment I first used my Siren powers to kill those vampires. That part will be there until I find something to fill it.” Naida glanced at Jeremy and blushed slightly. “I found something that I think will help in the end.”
Spencer glanced at Jeremy, but shook his head. “I don’t want to know.” He turned to Frank and frowned. “What about you? Aren’t you supposed to be dead?”
“Oh I’m dead, alright. I was giving a chance to come back and help you with the Anthony Iero coming to get Alex situation. Couldn’t let my only son get eaten by his grandfather, could I?” Frank winked at Alex as he stood with Bill in a corner. “What’s this all about, Alex?”
Alex blushed and gestured to Bill. “We’re married, Dad. Odd way for you to find out, huh?”
“I’m happy for you, Alex. Really, I am. Where’s Nia and Chloe?”
Rick stepped up from the back and smiled. “Well, Chloe, Brendon, and their daughter Ryan were sent to another collaborate of BE to help with a problem they’re having. Nia, Ray, and their twins are actually on their way down here now to get the rest of the paperwork to take to Chloe. I’m not too sure how they’ll react to seeing you, Frank.”
Just as he finished speaking, the elevator door opened and Nia walked out with Ray behind her. Brianna was behind them with the twins in a stroller, talking about something she had seen little Frankie do that morning. Nia laughed and then looked into the hallway and her eyes found Frank.
She took a deep breath as if to speak and fainted, only being caught by Ray, who was staring openmouthed at Frank. He recovered enough to lay Nia down gently onto the floor before looking at Frank again. “You’re dead. I helped dress your body. I mean … you’re dead.”
“Yes, Ray, I think we’ve all established that I’m dead. Now would you like to know why I’m here?” Ray nodded, unable to speak, and Frank continued. “I’m here to help against my father. As soon as that’s over with, I’m dead again.”
Nia started to revive and sat straight up, turning full faced too look at Frank. “You’re dead.”
“Yes, yes, we’ve been over this. I’m dead, given a reprieve to help save you against my father, and then I’m dead again. Do I have to keep doing this?” Frank looked exhausted already and he had just gotten there.
“What does this mean though? I’m married to Ray. We have twins. How am I going to explain to Frankie that the man she was named after because he was dead is alive?” Nia was having hysterics and Naida was not going to deal with it.
“Nia, please, calm down for a moment. I have a headache and don’t think I can deal with you screaming right now.” Naida felt that old calming feeling leave her and looked around to see that everyone was relatively calmer. She sat upright and looked around. “Did you all feel that?”
“It got calmer when you spoke, Naida. It’s nothing new.” Bill seemed relieved that she was still able to do that. The look on her face must have stopped him from being relieved as he frowned. “What’s wrong now?”
“I haven’t been able to do that since the first time I was tortured ten months ago. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, Billy. Fuck it all.” Naida leaned back against Frank again and sighed. She was relying on people she didn’t know to keep her calm. It was not the best of days.
Nia was still staring at Frank when he spoke, making her jump. “I died, so our marriage ended. I wanted you to be with Ray, and you are. You have no idea how thrilled I am that you named your daughter after me. What’s your son’s name?”
“Arthur, Artie.”
“After Mikey? I think he’d like knowing that too.” A cough behind him made him smile and turn his head to the doorway. “Sorry, honey, you can come out of hiding now. They were never going to hurt you.”
He moved away from Naida, letting Jeremy take his spot by her side and held his hand out to what appeared to be an empty doorway. A pale hand came out of the darkness and took Frank’s stepping into the light to reveal a beautiful petite pregnant woman with long blonde hair and pale blue eyes. “Everyone, this is Emelie. Emelie is a white light spirit. She’s able to hide in all forms of darkness and light. She’s also my wife.”
Emelie laid her hand on her stomach as Frank wrapped his arm around her shoulders, turning to Nia. “See, Nia, in the end, it’s okay for the both of us. You have Ray, and I have Emelie. It’s okay.”
Naida couldn’t take sitting there any longer. She stood and fell against Jeremy, who merely scooped her into his arms. He walked over to Spencer who put her clothes and guarders into her lap and headed to elevator without her even asking.
As soon as the elevator door closed, Naida screamed, one blood curdling scream after another into Jeremy’s shoulder. She screamed until she couldn’t scream any more and the darkness took her.
