Zack woke up the next morning with a shrill ringing in his ear, he groaned and rolled over but the ringing persisted. Waking up more he realized it was his phone; he reached over to the nightstand and picked up the wireless, “Hullo?” Zack curled underneath his blankets again and hoped it wasn’t his mother calling to check up on him.
“Zacky are you still in bed? It’s almost two! Whatever, I’m comin’ in.” Matt laughed and hung up the phone; Zack left the phone off the hook and tossed it on the floor. A moment later Matt was crouched next to him, his brown eyes laughing, “You remember we have practice at two-thirty right?” Matt laughed; Zack looked at him for a second and then at the clock, “Are you trying to tell me to get up?” he yawned. Matt chuckled and mussed his hair; Zack swatted the hand away and pulled the covers over his head.
“I haven’t seen him in awhile.” Matt tugged the covers back and lightly brushed his knuckles down Zack’s cheek. Zack looked at him totally confused, “Haven’t seen who in awhile?”
“Strippy? Spots? Whatever his name is.” Matt pointed at Stripes still being held firmly against Zack’s chest. Zack pouted and gave Stripes a small squeeze, “His name is Stripes.” Zack stuck his tongue out at the singer. Matt laughed again, “Whatever, I was close.” He ran his fingers through Zack’s tangled hair, “Are you okay Zacky?” Matt’s tone was suddenly serious and he was crouched in front of him again. Zack slowly nodded his head, “I think so, I had a couple of bad dreams last night, but I think I’m okay.”
Matt nodded and then turned toward the doorway and stood up with his head cocked to the side listening.
“What?” Zack sat up and looked around, he was a little nervous but Matt didn’t seem concerned.
“Jimmy and Brian, I can here Brian bitchin’ all the way up here.” Matt laughed and as if cued there was a muffled knock on the door; Zack snuggled back down in his covers and Matt went to let their friends in.
“Dude, is that Stripes? I thought your mom threw him away when we were like fourteen or somethin’?” Brian looked at the ragged animal in wonder; Zack’s eyes narrowed and he growled, “She tried to..” Brian grimaced, “Oh yeah, now I remember. That was the argument of the fuckin’ century.”
Zack had finally gotten somewhat up; he at least had put on some jeans. Jimmy flopped on the bed next to Zack and wrapped an arm around his waist. Zack snuggled back into him and pulled Matt down with him. Matt gracefully fell next to Zack, the three of them laid quiet next to each other, with Brian leaning against the wall across from them smirking. Matt halfway sat up and after a second looked at Brian and said, “Johnny’s here.” Brian pushed away from the wall and went to let the small bassist in.
When Brian got back to the room with Johnny, the quiet and relaxed atmosphere was gone; it had been replaced with a sharp playful energy. Matt and Zack were on the floor wrestling; Matt was letting the smaller guitarist win for the moment and lazily rolled onto his back when Zack shoved him. Matt snarled playfully and tried to push the dogged guitarist off him; Zack dodged his hand and tried to put him in a headlock that Matt easily slipped out of.
To anyone else the scene would’ve looked like a full blown fight, but Brian could easily see how careful Matt was being with his human friend. Brian watched them, still amazed at how gentle Matt was with them; he played with Zack the same way he might a young, frail child. That’s not what the miniature wrestling matched looked like, not by a long shot, but after seeing Matt nearly uproot a sizeable tree, crumple a steel sheet like it was tissue paper, and get shot with a .357 and walk away without a scratch; Brian was still dumbfounded when Zack freely tackled, bit, kicked, and punched the singer. Matt took it all in good graces and happily played with the guitarist. As far as Brian knew Zack had never even gotten a bruise from his frequent scraps with Matt.
Matt wrestled a squirming Zack into a headlock and started to tickle him; Zack giggled and struggled to get free, snapping at any skin that got close enough and tried to wiggle his head out of Matt’s firm hold. Jimmy was lying on the bed watching them laughing at Zack’s feeble attempts to get free.
Like a cat Jimmy rolled over and crouched then sprang on the pair on the floor; Matt moved faster, he pulled Zack out of the headlock and flipped over and easily caught the drummer. Jimmy yelped in surprise and Matt’s arms wrapped around him like a steel cage. Zack growled and pounced on both of them; Matt moved Jimmy to his right side and captured Zack with his left arm.
The game came to an end when someone rang the doorbell, Zack sat up confused, he started to pull away from Matt, but the singer didn’t let go; Matt was staring intently at the ceiling, the tilt of his head let Brian know he was listening very closely to something. He finally let go of Zack and gracefully got to his feet, “Stay here.” He whispered and glided out the door.
Zack scooted closer to Jimmy, Matt had him a little more than concerned with who or *what* was at the door. Jimmy wrapped his arms around Zack protectively and Brian and Johnny moved further into the room; Johnny went over to the large bay window and looked out into the backyard and then slunk back over to Zack and Jimmy. Brian watched the hall like a well-trained guard dog, tense and alert.
Matt came back a few minutes later moving with a tense grace, like a lion searching his domain for an unwanted visitor.
“I take it no one was there.” Synyster whispered still glaring at the hallway. Matt shook his head; then, almost like he’d been startled, Matt whipped around with a hideous snarl ripping from his throat and viciously swiped at something they couldn’t see. Zack whimpered and hid his head in Jimmy’s arm; Matt had never made a sound like that before and now apparently there was still something with them. Jimmy tightened his grip on him and moved so he could cover more of Zack’s body. The gruesome sounds coming from Matt started to quiet and eventually trailed off. The house was silent as the grave, after a moment the tension in Matt’s shoulders began to dissipate.
“Is it gone?” Johnny whispered; he was curled against Brian’s side watching Matt fearfully.
“No.” Zack murmured. Jimmy’s arms tightened even more and he let his own growl rumble through his chest, Matt crouched and let a ferocious snarl pour out from behind his sharp, bared teeth.
“Where is it Zack?” Johnny asked nervously sweeping the room with his eyes.
“Next to me.”
Matt’s snarl dropped off abruptly, “I can’t see it.” He carefully walked over to Zack and Jimmy and crouched next to Zack, “Where?” before Zack could answer Matt yelped and jumped back with four angry red marks trailing down the side of his face. A loud growl that morphed into a wall shaking roar ripped out of Matt and he swiped viciously at the air next to Zack and Jimmy.
Zack felt coldness unlike anything he’d ever experienced before when Matt roared. Matt’s bellow triggered a primal fear, the same fear a mouse feels when cornered by a cobra, for the first time Zack was absolutely terrified of what Matt was. When the sound finally died Zack realized he and Jimmy were shaking uncontrollably.
Matt looked up from the spot on the floor where he thought the spirit was and blinked when he saw Johnny shaking and clinging to Brian like he was a life ring, Brian was snow white, his eyes were dark and wide with fear. He looked down at the trembling Zack and Jimmy and swore quietly and ran out of the room as fast as he could.
Matt was out of the room before the movement even registered in Synyster’s mind. Johnny was shaking horribly with the occasional terrified whimper escaping him; Brian could feel the rapid beat of his heart thundering against his own. The malevolent spirit was forgotten for the moment as the four tried to calm themselves.
“Matt?” Zack’s shaky whisper nearly sent Brian back into his panicked state; Johnny whimpered and held onto him tighter.
“Matty, come back.” Zack’s voice was still just a shaky whisper; nothing in the house stirred.
“Matt?” Synyster tried his own voice, it was no better than Zack’s.
“Matty?” Johnny still had his head buried in Brian’s shoulder but the muffled sound still carried through the room.
“Matt?” Jimmy’s voice was the strongest, but it was still only a hoarse whisper. Matt didn’t answer, but whatever was next to Zack did, an insane cackle echoed through the room. Jimmy was flung away from Zack and hit the wall with a ‘thump’; he bounced off the wall, hit the floor and didn’t move. Brian felt something wrap around his waist and he was jerked away from Johnny. Johnny slammed into the wall with the window and slumped to the floor. Synyster felt the sickening feeling of being *tossed* and hit the ceiling, Zack screamed from somewhere to his left, and then the only thing Brian saw was the hardwood floor rushing up to meet him.
Matt called himself every filthy name he knew and made up some new ones as he sprinted back to Zack’s house; partly for scaring them like he did but mostly for *leaving* when he *knew* there was some malicious thing after Zack. He started the list over.
Matt had left the house furious at himself for scaring them; he’d slipped into his favorite form in the neighbor’s yard, a large black wolf, and had sprinted until he thought his legs would fall off. That was when he remembered *why* he had scared them in the first place, there was something after Zack, something that wanted him dead. He was exhausted and he wasn’t entirely sure where he was so flying was out of the question, he really needed to fly more so he could get places faster; but it was such a pain in the ass to try and orient yourself just by looking at the roofs of buildings.
So he was stuck with his feet on the ground, he’d cornered a deer hoping something to eat would bring back some of his energy but he could still feel how heavily he was falling on his paws. Without slowing his run Matt raised his muzzle to the dark sky and howled out his fury.
He finally made it back to Zack’s house and knew something bad had happened, Johnny and Brian’s cars were still in the driveway, but the house was dark. He was too tired to change back into his human form and as a wolf he would have a better chance at finding Zack’s invisible tormentor. Using a trick he’d picked up a few decades ago from an Elder Matt got the door open and paused in the entry way. He could smell blood, mostly Zack but there was a little from Synyster and Johnny mingling with it. Matt trotted to the bathroom where Zack’s smell was the strongest.
Matt balanced on his back legs and managed to flip on one of the soft lights in the bathroom. Zack was still bleeding a little, mostly from his head; the dark green marble tile of the bathroom was smeared with blood. Zack was sprawled out face down on the cold floor. His shallow, raspy breathing was only a small comfort; Matt whimpered and lowered his head, he crept forward and licked at the deep cuts on Zack’s face and neck. Zack whined when Matt started to clean the slashes on his back and shoulders but quieted when Matt nuzzled the back of his neck.
Once most of the blood was off of his back Matt whimpered again, the mutilation from last time didn’t even compare to this, it looked like Edward Scissorhands had just gone absolutely psycho on Zack. There wasn’t an inch of skin that didn’t have at least a scrape on it, there was a deep spot on his shoulder that continued to ooze blood and strip down his spine where it looked like the skin had been peeled away and the creamy white of bone was showing.
Working his cold nose under Zack’s shoulder he got Zack to turn over. Zack’s chest, thankfully, it wasn’t any worse than his back, but it was still painful to look at. The previous scars had been traced over again and more added. Matt ran his warm tongue carefully over the lacerations. Zack whimpered and squirmed, Matt whined and licked his pale face until Zack quieted and began to relax and then he went back to cleaning his wounds. Once Zack was taken care of Matt licked his face one more time and then went to find the others.
Brian, Jimmy, and Johnny were still in the bedroom. Matt trotted over to Jimmy first; the drummer was okay, judging by the huge bump on his head he was going to have a massive headache when he woke up. Matt licked his hand and managed to nudge him into a more comfortable position. Then he jumped up on the bed and gently pulled the comforter off and covered his unconscious friend.
Synyster was lying in a small pool of blood, Matt guessed it was from his nose, it didn’t look broken and his breathing was soft and even. Still Matt didn’t want to mess with him to much, he was really too tired to be giving out any sort of medical analysis. Matt trotted to the hallway closet and grabbed two more blankets and dragged them into the bedroom, he covered Syn with one and licked the guitarist’s cheek before he moved over to Johnny.
The small bassist was curled into a ball; there were a few shallow scratches on his arms, nothing like Zack. Matt licked the small cuts clean and then covered him with the other blanket. Johnny groaned quietly in his sleep and curled tighter into his ball. Matt licked the side of his face and then lay next to him for a few minutes until the bassist began to relax. With a final lick Matt made his way back to the bathroom; Zack’s breathing hadn’t really improved but he seemed a little more relaxed.
Matt cleaned all the lacerations again and collapsed next to him; he started to fall asleep, but jerked himself awake. He forced himself to his feet and padded out of the bathroom, he circled the house twice inside and out but found nothing. He dragged himself to the hallway closet and wrestled out another blanket and pulled it into the bathroom and covered Zack. Then as an after thought he trotted back into the bedroom, checked the other three again, and jumped up on the bed. He rooted around for a moment until he found what he was looking for; he cradled the stuffed tiger in his jaws and tried not to drool on it too much. He padded back to the bathroom and nudged the tiger under one of Zack’s arms. He flipped the light off and laid down in the doorway so he could watch both the rooms his friends were in and finally fell into sleep.
Matt woke the next morning a little disoriented, at first he couldn’t figure out why he was on the floor and then he couldn’t remember whose floor he was on. When he finally remembered he looked around the bathroom and was surprised and worried to see it empty, Zack and Stripes were gone. Matt stood up and gave a small whine, he was stiff and achy, but he had to find Zack and see if the others were okay and awake. He turned to leave the bathroom and ran into the door. He backed up shaking his head and growling, he glared at the door and gave a sharp bark of indignation. He opened the door the same way he had the front door and walked out of the bathroom with his head and tail held high.
“Shit it got out!” Johnny yelped and hid behind Synyster who was standing next to the kitchen table. Matt cocked his head to the side and looked at them. He had wandered into the kitchen after hearing their voices and now he was standing in the doorway slowly wagging his tail; Zack and Jimmy were near the sink, Zack whimpered and moved behind Jimmy.
“Do ya’ think it’ll leave if we just open the door?” Johnny asked still hiding behind Synyster.
“We don’t know how it got in, in the first place, it could just come right back in.” Jimmy said watching Matt closely. Matt sat and stared at them curiously, why were they calling him an ‘it’?
“Maybe it’s hungry…” Zack peeked out from behind Jimmy and slid over to the refrigerator; he opened the door and after a moment of rummaging around pulled out a package of lunch meat. He walked over to stand next to Brian and Johnny, “Are you hungry?” he held out a piece of the meat; Matt was ravenous, as a wolf he didn’t have to rely solely on blood for food and the ham smelled delicious. He sat up on his back legs and wagged his tail. Zack tossed a piece of ham to him and Matt snapped the meat out of the air.
“Okay, that was kinda cool.” Johnny laughed; Zack tossed another piece of meat and Matt caught it again.
“If you feed it, it’s just gonna come back.” Jimmy said watching them.
“Well he doesn’t seem mean or anything,” Zack said and tossed another piece of ham. “c’mon, you want some more?” Zack backed toward the backdoor holding out another piece of ham. Matt cocked his head to the side, he knew what Zack was doing, and he wasn’t going outside. He backed up a couple steps and then lay down.
“Hmm, seen that one before I guess.” Zack tossed him another piece anyway.
“He’s pretty, and he looks well fed, someone’s gotta be lookin’ after him.” Synyster said looking at Matt’s glossy black coat.
“It’s not anyone around here; look at how big it is, there are way too many little kids running around. If someone knew this thing was here they’d call animal control.” Zack said shaking his head. Matt was still very confused but Zack kept tossing him food so he let it slide.
“Maybe Matt’ll know what to do with it.” Johnny said, he wasn’t hiding behind Brian anymore, but helping Zack toss meat over to Matt.
“If he decides to come back.” Brian muttered; Matt caught the piece of food that was tossed to him but didn’t eat it immediately, he stared at Johnny completely floored.
“Apparently he did, I doubt the thing that attacked us had a change of heart and made us comfortable.” Jimmy said.
“If he came back why didn’t he stay?” Zack whispered; Matt barked, he was sitting right in front of them! Johnny slipped behind Brian again, “What’d we do, is it gonna go psycho or something?” Brian moved to a more protective stance in front of the smaller man.
“Hey, uh, dog, you want some more food?” Zack moved away from Brian and Johnny and tried to get Matt’s attention back on him; Matt ignored him and stared hard at Brian trying to figure out what was going on.
A light bulb went off in Matt’s head as he continued to look at Synyster; he let his long tongue loll out and he gave a toothy grin. He stood up wagging his tail, still smiling and rolled over laughing as hard as he could in his wolf form.
“I knew it; it’s gonna go crazy and eat us!” Johnny whimpered; Zack backed away from him and Jimmy was in front of him in a heartbeat glaring at Matt. Matt shook his head and taking a deep breath changed back into his human form.
“The fuck?!” Brian couldn’t believe his eyes, the giant dog turned into Matt! Matt laughed and shook his head, “I forgot you guys didn’t know I could do that.” He was still laughing as the other four stared at him with eyes bigger than saucers.
“I thought you were a vampire!” Johnny was pressed against Brian’s back staring at the half-naked Matt. Matt cocked his head to the side, much like the dog he had been had done.
“I am.” He looked a little confused but was still laughing.
“If you’re a vampire what’re you doing prancing around like a freakishly large dog scaring the hell outta us?!” Jimmy demanded.
“That wasn’t a dog, it was a wolf. And for future reference, all my forms are male.” Matt had calmed down a little but there was still laughter dancing in his eyes. Zack’s eyes widened even more, “You can be more than one thing?”
“Of course,” Matt shook his head as if he was disappointed, “you guys really need to catch up on your vampire lore.”
“What else can you be?” Zack was looking at him curiously; Matt leaned against a counter and shrugged, “Pretty much anything I want I suppose.”
“Can you be a dragon?” Brian asked excitedly; Matt thought for a moment, “No.” there was a collective and disappointed groan from the group.
“Can you be a cockroach?” Zack asked still curious; Matt made a face, “Why would I want to be a cockroach?” he asked disdainfully.
“I dunno, can you?” Zack persisted.
“Yes. I’m not going to, but yes I could.” Matt rolled his eyes.
Zack stepped out from behind Jimmy and walked over to Matt; the singer didn’t move but watched him carefully. Zack lifted one of Matt’s arms and snuggled against his side, “I love you Matty.”
Matt wrapped his arm around him carefully and nuzzled his hair; Brian grabbed Johnny’s hand and pulled him over to the singer with him. Johnny pounced on the singer and sighed when he found a comfortable position against him. Synyster curled against Matt’s other side and buried his head in the crook of his neck. Jimmy came up on Zack’s side and did the same.
“I’m sorry.” Matt whispered.
“You came back.” Brian murmured against his neck.
“I shouldn’t have left.” Matt’s voice was filled with venom; Zack whimpered and pressed a small kiss to his neck.
“It’s okay Matty.”
Matt shook his head but didn’t argue any further. They didn’t move, Matt savoring the warmth of his friend’s bodies and they just enjoying his calm presence. Matt didn’t stir until Johnny and Zack fell asleep and Jimmy and Brian were lightly dozing.
He woke Jimmy up first, “Take Zack and I’ll get these two.” He whispered; Jimmy nodded and gently pulled Zack away from Matt and then carried him back to the bedroom. Matt slipped Johnny and Brian around so they would be easier to carry and then followed Jimmy back to the bedroom.
Once the four were asleep Matt debated on whether or not he should go hunting. If he didn’t go now he might not have a chance to go later and that could be dangerous for his human friends. Then again, if he went now while they were asleep, something could happen to them. He let a low growl rumble in his chest and started pacing by the window.
“Matt?” Zack’s sleepy voice was little more than a whisper to Matt. The singer walked over to the bed to see if he was just talking in his sleep or if he was really awake. Matt found Zack looking at him sleepily, “You’re not gonna go again are ya’?” he asked worriedly. Matt made a frustrated sound and made up his mind, “I have to go for a little while, but I’ll be back, I promise.” He pressed a kiss to the guitarist’s forehead and started to leave, but Zack lightly grabbed his hand, “Are you coming back as the dog?” Zack was already starting to slip back into sleep; Jimmy moved so he was pressed closer to the guitarist and Zack drifted off even more.
“Do you want me to be the dog?” Matt asked smiling; Zack’s eyes closed and he nodded, Matt smoothed back Zack’s hair and whispered, “I’ll be back soon.” And then he was gone.
Zack woke up later in the evening and almost passed out when he saw a massive black dog at the foot of his bed, but he calmed when the afternoon’s events came flooding back. Brian and Jimmy were gone, faintly their voices drifted in from the kitchen, and Johnny was snoring lightly behind him. Zack sat up carefully so he wouldn’t wake his friend and looked at Matt.
Stretched out Matt was bigger than Zack, hell he was bigger than any dog Zack had ever seen. He had to be a full seven and a half feet from the tip of his tail to his nose. He was lean and muscled; much like Matt was when he was on two feet.
Brian calling him ‘pretty’ really didn’t do him justice. His glossy black coat was streaked with dark gray and even some white on the tips of his ears and tail. Matt cracked a golden eye to look at Zack and flipped the end of his thick tail in greeting; Zack snickered and reached out a hand hesitantly, “Can I pet you?”
Matt raised his head and then stood and stretched and filled in the place where Jimmy had been. Zack lay down again and began running his fingers through Matt’s thick coat.
Matt’s lustrous coat wasn’t as silky as it looked, it was tough, something that could take rain and snow and running through tangled underbrush, but underneath that there was fur softer than down and twice as warm. Zack buried his fingers in that soft fur and gently scratched; Matt slowly wagged his tail and sighed. Zack buried his head in the soft fur of Matt’s neck and breathed deeply.
As a ‘human’ Matt had a very subtle spicy scent unlike anything Zack had ever smelled before. It was rich and warm but there was an underlying coldness to it as well, like ice, it made his nose tingle and at first had made him sneeze. As a wolf the spicy scent was gone, it was replaced by a wild scent a combination of wind, fresh rain, moss, warm earth and that same under current of cold that made the smell all the more foreign and wild.
“I wanna dog like you.” Zack whispered falling asleep again. Matt wagged his tail faster and moved closer to Zack.
A/N: It’s almost done!! I’m sorry its taking so long to update but I’ve come to the conclusion that Algebra and Chemistry are the work of the Devil. >_< Anyway, I’ve got two more chapters to write and then this one will be over and I can start on another long one I’ve been kicking around for a couple weeks.
That one probably won’t be posted until I have at least a few chapters written just so I don’t leave you for two weeks with only one chapter ^_^ and I’ve gotta try and revive a story I started on Fanfiction.net.
Depending on my school schedule I’m thinking the next chapter will be up…Monday or Tuesday, unless I’m hit with a ball of writing energy then it might be up Sunday and the last chapter should be up sometime next week as well.
But thank you all so much for your reviews; they do wonders, especially during a writer’s block. =) Cookies and Milk for all!
