James watched Jason's wide eyed stare. It was a loaded statement, but it was true. He had told his wife absolutely everything.
Jason stood up slowly and walked over to the window. He moved the curtain aside and looked down at the streets, still busy even in the middle of the night. He had felt a little claustrophobic, as if Fran had been in the room with them.
"What do you mean 'everything'?" Jason asked.
James stood up as well and walked over behind Jason. He placed a hand on Jason's shoulder and caressed him softly.
"Whatever you're thinking, I told her. I had to tell her. Look where keeping everything bottled up got me. I was a vicious drunk, and I couldn't go only half way on the recovery road. It was all or nothing.”
"What would she think to know that you're here with me?"
"Fran knows how I feel about you." James leaned down and kissed the back of Jason's neck. He wrapped his arms around Jason and pulled the bassist close against him.
"And she’s just fine with that? She’s not going to walk out on you or anything?”
“Not over you,” James whispered in Jason’s ear. “If I went and picked up a waitress from that bar, then probably yeah. But we’re talking about you and that’s something else.”
James turned Jason around slowly and looked into his eyes. Jason looked so lost at the moment.
"I hate that things turned out the way they did. I fucked up big and I couldn't risk losing anything else, I had to come clean to Fran about everything if I wanted to make a clean start." James caressed Jason's face.
He leaned down and kissed him slowly, Jason responded with some hesitancy.
Jason was at such a loss for words. The whole thing was so much to take in. Being in front of the man made his heart ache with the loss of the past seven years. He moved his right hand to James’ shirt, slipping it underneath to finally, freely touch of the singer’s skin.
James broke the kiss to sigh in relief. He let his forehead touch Jason's.
"I want you to tell me something," James said seriously.
"What?" Jason whispered.
"You're letting me kiss you, you seem responsive, but did you ever back when you were still with us; did you ever want me like I wanted you?"
Jason's lip turned up slightly. If it hadn't been for the serious look on James' face he might have laughed. He thought back in his mind a few years to feelings he hadn't thought about in a long time.
"Yes."
LOAD PHOTO SHOOT, MARCH 1996
Jason was sitting on the make-up person's chair getting touched up for the photo shoot for the LOAD album. There was a small portable radio on the counter playing some song from that band Oasis Lars was raving about. The lady sprayed something into his hair and he closed his eyes.
He was wearing a suit. It was part of the new look Lars had thought up and Kirk had endorsed. James and he had not really been into the idea, but somehow it had happened anyway. James hadn't shown up yet. Perhaps he wouldn't show up at all.
Jason had to wonder why he was really there. He had no writing credits on the new album at all. He'd at least had one song on ...and Justice for All even if the bass was turned down so low you couldn't hear him on the entire album. He'd even had a writing credit on the Black album. This time he'd been shoved aside completely. Why was he even on the album art?
Please don't put your life in the hands
Of a Rock n Roll band
Who'll throw it all away
He was afraid maybe he'd been shoved aside because James had found him with a guy. Perhaps he should just count his blessings that James hadn't beaten him up and kicked him out of the band. Or perhaps James was smart enough to be afraid Jason would sue. It would also seem that James hadn't told Lars or Kirk because they’d never let on to knowing anything about it.
“All set,” he heard the make-up lady say.
In the mirror he could see his reflection. He didn't look bad in a suit.
He could also see in the mirror when a door in the studio opened behind him and in walked James, already dressed in the suit with the new haircut Lars insisted on. He hadn't seen the haircut until now. He wasn't in the studio while James and Lars and Bob tried to finalize the album.
"Does it look that bad?" James asked him. He looked at Jason's face in the mirror. The guy looked shocked. James didn't actually miss the long hair. This short hair was a lot easier to deal with.
"What?" Jason answered.
"Does it look that bad," James repeated. "You're staring."
"It doesn't look bad." Jason shook his head and looked away back to his own reflection in the mirror. He could see his blush; his eyes were dilated. He looked down quickly hoping James hadn't noticed.
He did not just get hot looking at James Hetfield. Except he had. The last thing he needed was to get his ass kicked for looking at James' ass. How and when had this happened?
"You look good in a suit," Jason heard James say from right behind him.
Jason looked up at himself in the mirror, not daring to look at James.
"Thank you." Jason said hesitantly.
Since Jason wasn't looking directly at James, James felt free to look over Jason. They’d all cut their hair, but Jason had gone first because he’d felt it had gotten so damaged through the years. James fought the temptation to run his hands over it now, a part of him wished he’d gotten the chance to do it while it was still long.
James kept a pretty close eye on Jason after that morning he'd thrown the biker out of Jason's house. He was always calling or having someone call Jason just to know where the other man was and with whom. He supposed it was kind of possessive borderline obsessive, but James was not concerned about that. It was more important for him to know what Jason was doing.
"James finally!" Lars yelled out.
James looked over to see Lars walking over with Kirk trailing behind him.
"You look good, James." Kirk said happily. "Doesn't he, Jase?"
Jason looked like a deer caught in headlights and Kirk noticed it right away.
"You clean up good too, Jase." Kirk added trying to deflect Jason having to answer.
James crossed his arms and stood partially in front of Jason, blocking him from Kirk. It did not go unnoticed by Kirk, or Lars. Both men made a mental note and filed it away.
"So when is this happening?" James asked.
"Right now," Lars said with an edge. "You ready to go?"
"I haven't been to 'make-up' yet," James said.
"Fuck that, let's just go," Lars said. "You're not gonna get any prettier."
James laughed.
Lars started walking away he looked back at Jason still sitting in the chair and James still standing.
"Well, c'mon!" Lars yelled and kept walking.
Jason hopped up out of his chair.
"C'mon Newkid," James said and started walking away.
Jason followed, eyes lingering on James's ass before he could stop himself. He quickly put on the sunglasses they were all going to be wearing in the shots.
How had this happened? Jason thought.
Now that James was no longer on the pedestal Jason had put him on; now that he was no longer so eager to impress James; now that he wasn't afraid of James finding out he was bisexual; what was left? Apparently it was desire.
Jason shook his head at his own stupidity.
Don't look back in anger,
I heard you say.
At least not today
PRESENT
"I couldn't stop looking at you," Jason breathed. Their mouths so close James could feel the words coming from him. "That's why I couldn't even look at you that whole photo shoot. You knew I was into guys, I couldn't let you see me looking at you like that."
James didn’t say anything. Instead he captured Jason’s lips once again, showing his relief with a caress of his tongue. All those years wanting, hating, wondering and ultimately regretting had never stopped weighing on his mind.
Jason’s hand under James’ shirt traveled higher, feeling James’ entire chest underneath his palm. His other hand started its own exploration underneath James’ shirt as well.
James pressed Jason into the window. He took his time; there was no rush. This was going to happen, and James’ wasn’t going to rush to the end. He intended to prolong the experience for as long as he possibly could. He intended to enjoy every little bit of Jason if only for one night.
Jason pulled back from the kiss. James watched him closely gauging him. Jason slowly inched up James’ shirt with both his hands. James moved slightly away from Jason then lifted his arms above his head as Jason removed the shirt and let it drop to the floor.
“This is really going to happen,” James whispered. “You’re not worried about Fran anymore?”
“Well, I’d still like an explanation, but that can wait. I trust what you say.” Jason ran his hands over James chest again, this time able to watch himself doing so.
“You still trust me?” James held one of Jason’s wrists in his hands, stopping the exploration of the bassist right above his heart.
“It’s not my trust you broke, James. It was my heart.”
James took that like a physical blow. He’d felt Jason’s words like a stab in the chest. His hand subconsciously tightened on Jason's wrist.
“Sorry,” Jason said when he saw James’ reaction.
“No, I deserved that.”
Jason wrapped his arms around James and laid soft kisses to the man’s neck.
“Take my shirt off, James,” Jason whispered. He hadn’t meant to utter the low blow, but it was the truth. The mood had already been set tonight, and Jason didn’t feel the need to hold back anything, nor did he think James could possibly say anything that could make him feel worse than he did seven years ago.
James grabbed the ends of Jason’s shirt and lifted it up off in a smooth movement, letting it drop to the floor with his own shirt. He'd never thought he'd be in a position to do this again. He looked over Jason for a moment too far gone to really see any differences made by time.
Jason placed his hand in James' hand and tugged him gently towards the bedroom.
