Gerard paced the width of the
corridor anxiously. Just waiting to hear something, anything, from the doctors on Frank’s condition. “Here Gee.” Ray handed him a coffee, which he gratefully accepted. “Any word?”
“Not a god damn thing!” Gerard resumed his routine, taking sips of the hot liquid as he went. “Sorry, are you here for Mr. Iero?” A nurse approached the four friends. Ray nodded. “You can see him now. Follow me.”
When they reached Frank’s room they all entered slowly, unsure of what they would find beyond that doorway. “Hey guys.” Frank said hoarsely with a small smile.
Ray approached the small boy before sitting on the edge of the bed. “Jesus Frankie, you really scared us. You know that?”
“I know. I’m sorry. I just went upstairs for a minute. Then I felt so dizzy...then...well you know the rest.”
“Why didn’t you shout one of us Frank?” Mikey asked, his eyes glistening.
“I didn’t want to worry you. Plus, I didn’t really have that much of a chance.”
“So how’s your head?” Bob asked. Frank grinned sheepishly. “Just a big bump. class=GramE>Nothing major. Trust me, to do things spectacularly right?”
“Of course!” Ray said with a wide smile, ruffling Frank’s coarse, short hair lightly.
Gerard stood quietly by the door, staring at Frank in the bed. Would this be how it would always be from now on? class=GramE>With Frank in and out of hospital all the time? The moment things start to be getting to a rough sense of normality, something else would happen? It would just keep happening until...‘No, Gerard.’ He scolded himself. ‘Don’t think like that. You promised Frank you’d get him better and that’s exactly what you’re gonna do!’
“Hello! Earth calling Gerard!” Gerard snapped his head up to see the rest of his band mates staring at him. “Wha?”
“We’ve been trying to talk to you for the last 5 minutes! You alright man?” Gerard nodded his head slowly. “Yeah I’m fine. Just thinking is all.” The others seemed to all accept this response and went back to their own conversations.
Frank looked over to his friend and flashed him a smile. Gerard returned it weakly. “What’s up Gee?”
“Nothing Frankie. Nothing. Just a bit tired...” Frank looked sheepish. class=GramE>“Sorry, probably my fault.”
“Nah it’s not.” It wasn’t strictly the truth because Gerard had been loosing a lot of sleep recently, worrying about Frank. “I’m gonna go outside for a cig. I’ll be back in a bit.”
Frank pouted. “Rub it why don’t class=SpellE>ya?” Gerard smiled and embraced the young guitarist quickly before leaving the room.
Gerard leant against the cool stone wall outside the hospital. The cigarette hanging loosely from his lips, feeling the nicotine begin to flow into his veins. A tear slowly trickled its way down his cheek. “Hey Gee.” Gerard jumped about a mile.
“Oh...hey Mikey.” He said, seeing his brother’s concerned face and hastily wiping the tears from his eyes. “What’s up?”
“I don’t know. Just wanted to see if you were okay. You were a little out of it in there.”
“I know. I’m sorry.” Gerard kept his eyes from Mikey’s, knowing his brother could read him like an open book most of the time.
“I’m here if you need to talk, you know?” Gerard nodded softly but said nothing. Mikey gave his brother’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze before heading back into the hospital.

There was lots of talking in the room. The guys all prepared themselves off side for a moment. Gerard looked at Frank. “Are you sure you want to do this Frankie? We can handle it if you need us to.”
Frank took a deep breath before adjusting the beanie on his head for the 10th time in the last 2 minutes. “Yeah. I’m sure.”
The 5 friends walked into the room and up to the table before them. Flashing cameras ensued from all around them. There was so many it was almost blinding. Frank sat next to Gerard, who was in the middle. They each had a microphone before them and he glanced off to the side to see Brian at the side and after a moment’s eye contact, Brian gave him an encouraging smile.
Gerard cleared his throat and the room fell mostly silent, the occasional flash still happening around the room. “Okay, so I’m guessing you’re all wondering why you’ve come here today. The reason is we have...due to personal reasons...decided to cancel our upcoming tour next month.” There was a roar as reporters all tried to ask questions and Gerard sighed, glancing at Frank, before looking back and nodding to one of the reporters in the front room.
“What about all the fans who’ve already bought tickets? Will you refund them or put on some extra shows to make up for this sudden cancelation?”
Ray leant forward to his class=SpellE>mic. “Of course all tickets will be refunded. However, extra shows are not really possible in the foreseeable future.”
Another roar of questions and another nod caused another reporter to rise to their feet among the crowd. “Would any of you like to elaborate on these ‘personal reasons’?”
Frank sighed. He’d known this question had been coming. The entire band fell silent and Gerard glanced at Frank.
“Umm...at this moment...”
Frank cut him off. class=GramE>“Because...” he pulled off his beanie, revealing his shaved head. “I have leukaemia.”
Then there was silence...
After a couple of moments, one female reporter put her hand up. Frank nodded to her. “Umm...I guess I just wanted to say...thank you for being honest.” Frank gave her a small smile as she sank back down into her chair.
Another reporter stood up. “How long have you known?”
“A couple of weeks.” Gerard answered.
“And is there anything you’d like to say to the fans...?”
Frank took a deep breath and nodded. “I’d just like to say thank you. Thank you for being the best fans in the world. I couldn’t ask for better. The band and I have had the time of our lives over the past few years and even if this is the end of the line for me...I expect all of the guys in this band to carry on without me...but I wanted to take this opportunity before my black little heart decides to give up on me...” Gerard looked to Frank, shaking his head slightly, saddened by this little speech. “Frank.” He whispered.
Frank didn’t say another word, just got up and walked off the stage, Mikey following him a moment later.
“Frank...wait.” Mikey turned the younger boy round as he walked down the corridor. Frank didn’t say a word, just buried himself in Mikey’s shoulder. He didn’t cryclass=GramE>, he felt as if his tears had run dry now, just took comfort in his friend.
“Promise me.” He whispered into Mikey’s shirt. “Promise me you all won’t just quit if I...”
Mikey sighed deeply. “I...I promise Frankie.”

The reaction to Frank’s and the band’s announcement was enormous. The fan mail and gifts began flooding in for Frank. Letters from boys and girls alike, of all ages, offering their sympathies and support. Frank loved reading class=GramE>them, it was like an extra lifeline. He knew he had so many people behind him, praying for him to get better, it seemed him to give him a boost. All the band seemed to notice the improvement and it made them smile that Frank seemed to be still acting so positively.
The band did a couple of interviews to try and elaborate and give the fans updates on Frank’s condition. Frank however, sat out. Not deliberately mind, more for the fact that treatments and appointments seemed to clash with the dates laid out for them. It was one day when he was going in to see Brandon that he missed one with TRL that he was quite annoyed to miss as he always had loved going to the TRL studios.
“Well Frank. I am so impressed with your mental progress and from what the doctor’s tell me.” w:st="on">Brandon flicked through a couple of pages in some notes before him. “You’ve had the stem cell harvests now?”
“Yeah. class=GramE>Two of them. Bloody painful things.” Brandon smiled gently and nodded. “Yes, I’m sure but when’s your first intensive radiotherapy?”
“Umm...a couple of days? Chemo starts tomorrow.” Frank glanced down at his hands and then glanced at the window.
“And it’s your birthday in a week or so isn’t it?” Brandon queried and Frank nodded again.
“Yup. class=GramE>Halloween on the nail.” He grinned. “Still gotta come up with a costume for trick or treating.”
w:st="on">Brandon frowned slightly. “I’m not so sure that’s such a good idea Frank. Your very vulnerable to illness at the moment. Going out at night in this cold? I wouldn’t recommend it at all.”
Frank’s face fell. “But it’s tradition! I always go wandering round town to watch the trick or class=SpellE>treaters on Halloween!”
w:st="on">Brandon nodded sympathetically. “I know Frank, but do you want this birthday to be your last?”
“It probably still will be!!” Frank yelled, anger bubbling up inside him.
“Now, now Frank.” Brandon chided. “That’s not the attitude to take, when I felt you were doing so well...” Frank clenched his teeth, before pushing himself to his feet and walking towards the door. “Whatever.”
Okay there you have it. Come on guys now review!!! It’s not that hard you know? And I’ve updated not 1 but 2 stories in the last week for you that’s gotta be worth more than 1 review? Okay...moving on. Keep rocking and writing. class=SpellE>Slayya
