The few weeks passed by quickly, during that time, both Mikey and Tatum as well as Donald, Donna and Grandma Elena had been trying to spend as much time with her as possible before her departure. They are all now getting use to the fact that she’s leaving, and that they will be without her for a very long time.
Two days before her departure, they all make sure that she’s fully packed with all the stuff she will need, Gerard still doesn’t realize there’s something going on, as they have all kept their mouths shut.
Finally it came to the day of her departure, which is due to be at 1pm in the afternoon, her uncle and aunt will be there to pick her and her friends up to Massachusetts. In the morning, Aurora stayed in her room, while Gerard went out with his other popular clan friends and Lacey. Once Gerard got changed into his outfits before walking out the door, Mikey stopped him.
“Where are you going?” Mikey asked.
“Out…with Lacey and the other lots. You coming as well?” Gerard replied.
“Nah…how long for?”
“Dunno…for 3,4 hours maybe…” Gerard replied, putting on his jacket and picking up his car keys.
“There’s someone you might want to say good-bye to.” Mikey stated.
Gerard furrowed his eyebrows.
“Who?” Gerard asked.
“Aurora.” Mikey replied shortly.
“Why should I? She and I don’t talk to each other anymore.”
With that, Gerard left the house. Mikey sighed and went up to Aurora’s room, and knocked on her door.
“Come in…” Aurora stated.
Mikey went in and smiled softly.
“Hey…my dearest bro…” Aurora greeted cheerfully.
“Hey…sis…You sound excited. Are you?”
“Yeah…I mean…come on…it’s Harvard!!! Who wouldn’t wanna go there?” Aurora stated.
“I wouldn’t…” Mikey stated, with clear sadness in his voice.
Aurora sensed it.
“Mikey…please…we need to talk. Come over here.”
Mikey went over and sat down beside her in her bed.
“You don’t want me to go…do you?” Aurora asked.
Mikey nodded.
“But it’s your life, and your future career. I’m not going to stop you.” Mikey replied.
“Thank you…thank you very much. You will always be my dearest big brother. I love you.” Aurora stated sincerely.
Mikey smiled.
“I love you too.” Mikey stated back in the same manner, and gave her a tight hug.
After a few minutes of silence…
“So are you just going to go and leave it all tension and Cold War between you and Gerard?” Mikey asked.
Aurora sighed.
“There’s no point. He won’t even talk to me anymore. I’ve tried, you know…”
“So he still has no idea that you are leaving?”
“Nope…He has no idea…totally clueless.” Aurora replied.
“Right…Cassie, Geri and the others are going with you, aren’t they?” Mikey asked.
“Yes…They all got into Harvard as well.”
“Wow…your bunch are really a bunch of brain boxes of the school.” Mikey said.
Aurora chuckled.
“Thanks. I will take that as a compliment.” Aurora stated, still chuckling.
Mikey smiled and sighed.
“I will miss you a lot!” Mikey stated.
“I will miss you a lot too!”
Mikey and Aurora talked again and spent the rest of the morning doing family activities with each other, as well as long with Donald and Donna, to make the most of it before she leaves. Finally it hit 12:45pm, her uncle and aunt had arrived early to pick her and her friends up. Her uncle and aunt love her to bits and are extremely proud of her, also she gets along very well with all her cousins and relatives, so she’s kind of looking forward to go over to their place. Aurora got all her stuff down to the living room from her room, as her other friends arrived to her house as well to hitch rides to Harvard as well. They all got their stuff into the cars’ trunks of the two Jeeps, and shut the door. Aurora went over to her grandma, parents, Mikey and Tatum to say her last good-byes and have a last round of hugs.
“Well, I guess…I will have to set off now. I love you all, and I will miss you all a lot. Good Bye…” Aurora stated.
“It’s not 1 o’clock yet…Do you have to go so soon?” Donna asked.
Aurora sighed.
“It’s much better for us if we set off earlier, the sooner we get there, the better.” Aurora replied.
They all sighed.
“OK…” Mikey said sadly.
Aurora looked at them with soft eyes.
“Look…mom, dad, grandma, Mikey, Tatum…” Aurora addressed them all.
“I know you all resented me for leaving…”
“We don’t resent you dear…We just don’t really want you to leave home so soon. But it’s your own future and life, we won’t stop you.” Donna stated, smiling weakly.
They all gave each other a round of tight bear hugs and kisses. When she got to Tatum…
“Tatum, you had been the perfect girlfriend to my dear Mikey. Look after him, okay?” Aurora stated.
Tatum nodded, and smiled meekly at her.
“You got it…Aurora…” Tatum stated.
Aurora said her farewells, and then got into a Jeep with her fellow friends, and they drove out of the Ways’ driveway, she waved good-bye to her loved ones. She smiled to herself and to her friends, she will be alright, she believes so, she will have her relatives and friends with her. She knows she will be fine, and she looks straigh ahead with a wide smile, ready for a total brand new adventure ahead.
While Aurora and her friends are on their way getting out of New Jersey, Gerard is in the shopping mall with his popular clan, as well as Lacey, they are all dining at Taco Bells, never did he know he would later learn about the truth of Lacey and realize what Aurora had been saying was all truth.
“Hey…Baby Gee…” Lacey cooed into his ears, as she gives him a tight bear hug and embrace, and kisses on his neck.
“What is it, sugar?” Gerard cooed back, looking at her adoringly.
“You know that Christian Dior necklace we saw just now in that Dior shop?!” Lacey stated, her tone lacing with sweetness.
Gerard smiled, knowing what she wants.
“You like it?! You want it?!” Gerard asked, with a sly look on his face.
“Yes…sir…” Lacey replied, nodded with a puppy dog face.
Gerard smiled.
“Kiss me first.” Gerard stated.
Lacey leaned into give him a long, lovers’ kiss.
“Here you go…” Gerard said, he handed her his credit card.
“You know the PIN number.” Gerard said.
Lacey smiled and kissed him again, and walked off while Gerard stared after her.
“Wow…you really do spoil her…a lot!” Frank stated, smiling.
“Well, I love spoiling her. She’s my girl.” Gerard responded.
“So…how about you and your sister---Aurora? How’s the family bond between you two?” Frank asked.
Gerard furrowed his eyebrows and rolled his eyes.
“I don’t want to talk about it. We don’t talk to each other anymore.” Gerard replied.
After talking for quite some time, Lacey is still not back.
“Where on earth is she? She has gone off for a very long time!” Gerard stated.
“I know…maybe she went crazy shopping.” Frank suggested.
Gerard rolled his eyes.
“She will never do that to me.” Gerard stated.
“Are you so sure about what you’ve just said right now?” Frank asked.
“Yes…I’m going to look for her.” Gerard replied.
Gerard then left Taco Bells and went to the shops, and spent a long time looking for Lacey. Until finally he found her, but to his horror and shock, she was making out with another boy, a boy from the same high school---Shayne Myers…in the very back of a Starbucks shop, where they can get a bit of privacy. Lacey, with her bags of shopping and Gerard’s credit card stuck out of her jeans pocket.
At this moment, everything Aurora had said to him came back, and he angrily matched over, he snatched his own credit card out of her jeans pocket and walked off.
“Wait…please…wait…Baby Gee…It’s not what it seems.” Lacey stated hurriedly, running after him with all her bags of shopping.
Gerard stopped and turned around sharply to face her, anger clearly on his face.
“I don’t need nor do I want to hear your stupid explanation.” Gerard stated back.
“I’m sorry…I really am.” Lacey begged, tears in her eyes.
“She was right about you all along. You were just using me all along, for the popularity and the money…you gold-digger whore!” Gerard said.
“Who? Who told you?” Lacey asked shakily.
“My sister-my loving sister---Aurora…We are so over.” Gerard replied and stated, he walked off, leaving Lacey standing on the spot.
Gerard left the shopping mall, on his way driving back home; he kept replaying what Aurora had told him before. He now realized that what Aurora said was all true, and that she had really been looking out for him all along.
When he went back home, he ran straight into the house, hoping to find Aurora, to talk and to apologize to her. He ran straight to upstairs, ignoring the stares by his Grandma Elena, Donna and Mikey, he knocked on her door, hoping that Aurora would answer, but no answer came. He tried opening the door, but to find it locked. He went back downstairs to the lounge, Elena, Donna and Mikey looked at him.
“What is it, son?” Donna asked, with concern.
Gerard, breathing hard…
“Mom…where’s Aurora?” Gerard asked.
“What for?” Mikey asked.
“I need to talk to her and apologize to her. I need to see her and tell her I’m sorry.” Gerard replied.
Then Gerard explained everything that happened at the mall, looking at their stunned faces.
“So…where is she?” Gerard asked.
At that, the three of them exchanged looks of unease and glances.
“Look…Gee…I hope when we say this, you will understand why we didn’t tell you at first…” Mikey said.
“What’s going on?” Gerard asked.
“Maybe you should sit down first.” Mikey said.
“I don’t need to sit down…Just tell me now!” Gerard said, sensing something is up.
“Gerard…son…you’ve just missed her. She’s just left New Jersey, to go to Harvard.” Donna replied.
Later, they all explained everything from the beginning when Aurora took the scholarship exam to now…however, no matter how much things and times they’ve all tried to explain to him, he’s still refusing to believe that Aurora had left without saying a good-bye. He went to everywhere looking for her, especially to special places where they went to when they were still kids.
By evening, he came back home, all upset and finally convinced that she had indeed gone.
“Are you okay? I’m sorry…” Mikey stated.
“No…it’s okay…It’s not your fault, it’s mine…I should have listened to her.” Gerard said.
Mikey sighed sadly, while an awkward silence passed between them.
“I want to see her room.” Gerard stated.
Mikey then passed him her room key, and they went up together to her room. Most of the stuff are gone, few posters are left on the wall, the bed sheets still there, and all her art stuff are still there.
“Didn’t she get her art stuff and things?” Gerard asked sadly.
“No…she said she doesn’t want to take all these stuff with her.” Mikey replied.
Gerard felt like crying his eyes out right then and there, he was the one who had taught her to love art and had encouraged her to do so. Now that Aurora had left everything behind, he felt that he really had ruined everything between them. He knelt down beside her empty bed, crying his eyes out into her pillow. Mikey sighed and left him alone.
