Frank’s POV.
It’s hard to say how long we sat there, the two of us, the two lost and sad boys, who had just told each other that we were both miserable. At first it seemed there was no words to be said, but in the end, silence can’t go on forever.
“You can stay here.” Gerard said as he broke the silence that had lingered for a long time. I shook my head at his offer slowly.
“I don’t want to intrude.”
“You won’t.” Came Mikey’s voice suddenly from the doorway. I looked over in surprise, as I hadn’t heard him enter. He gave me an apologetic smile and took a few steps into the room.
“I haven’t been standing here long,” he started nervously, “but I did hear the last thing you said.” He finished and I nodded, to show him I believed him and wasn’t angry.
“Stay.” Gerard said again, and I found it hard to resist. But could I really intrude on their already complicated lives?
“Really Frank, it’s alright, you can stay in the guestroom for a bit, mum won’t mind.” Mikey said as if he’d read my mind.
My eyes went from Mikey’s smiling face to Gerard’s pleading one right next to me on the couch. Finally I realised that I should say yes, only because Gerard asked me. From what Mikey had told me, it had been a long time since Gerard had a friend of his own, and he seemed genuinely happy about me living with them.
Finally, I agreed.
Narrator’s POV.
There was a long list of rules for Frank to follow, and he did his best to memorise it all. There were many things he wasn’t allowed to do, and many things he had to think about. Donna Way, when she returned from her trip, was more then happy to hear about Frank moving in. To her, it meant that maybe she’d have some more help with keeping Gerard occupied.
Don’t think anything bad about her, she loves Gerard to bits and pieces, but sometimes she just wished things could be different.
Frank’s first week in the house was complicated, and he accidentally broke several of the rules that was now written down neatly on a piece of paper for him. But he apologized and he was forgiven.
For Gerard, having someone else in the house was both wonderful and hard. Gerard couldn’t even remember the last time he had a friend, a real friend, and he didn’t want to ruin their friendship. Every day was a struggle for him to not lose his patience or throw things around. And when he couldn’t control himself he would cry and pray in his head that Frank wouldn’t hate him.
Frank’s life continued being complicated, and hard. He couldn’t find his way to being happy, and it made him sick. No matter what was going on, everything seemed to backfire in his face. He went to get his things, and his mother called him a fag. To Frank, that was the ultimate insult.
It’s incredible how fast a month can pass.
Mikey’s POV.
“Gerard, it’s alright, he doesn’t hate you.” I whispered as I rubbed his back. He had given Frank a fright when he suddenly threw a bowl through the room and then banged his head against the kitchen table. Gerard had been eating his cereal, and suddenly he had spilled it all out on the kitchen table, and what was worse; on Frank.
Directly after the incident all the colour had drained from Gerard’s face as he saw Frank being soaked by the milk. Frank had reacted as anyone would, by jumping up to try and get away from at least some of the milk. The look on Frank’s face had made Gerard snap for the first time in three days. He grabbed what was closest - the bowl - and hurled it through the room, before letting his head connect with the table.
I had been standing at the counter, making toast as it all went down. As soon as I saw Gerard freak out I shouted at Frank to get out. Gerard was so afraid, he was so scared, of losing Frank as his friend. I knew he would need comforting, without Frank being in the room.
“Gerard, it’s alright.” I tried again, and hugged my crying brother closer.
“I didn’t mean to spill on his clothes.” Gerard cried and I could feel his breath hot on my neck. I didn’t respond, I just hugged him closer for a bit before I pulled away.
“Let me look at your head Gee.” I said slowly as I let my fingers run across his forehead. It was red, but there wouldn’t be a bump. At least that’s a good thing. After looking at his head I gave him a final pat on the back before I got up to pick the broken bowl up and wipe off the table.
“I didn’t mean it.” Gerard said again, his voice still trembling and his eyes still spilling tears.
“It was an accident.” He whispered as he wiped his eyes on the sleeve of his hoodie.
“Go up to Frank’s room and tell him that Gee, he’s not angry.” I said as I tried to clean up the mess. At first he shook his head, but after a few minutes he nodded slowly. I kissed his cheek as he stood up to go and apologize to Frank.
I just hoped Frank wasn’t angry.
Frank’s POV.
I knew Gerard could snap, and I had seen him angry before. But never had he hurt himself like that, and it scared me beyond reason. The way he just slammed his head against the table, it was… it scared me.
When Mikey told me to leave I did it without arguing; I knew me living with them was hard for Gerard. I knew that he hadn’t had a real friend in so long, and that he was afraid of losing me. I knew, because Mikey had told me. I had for a few weeks time tried to figure out how to prove to Gerard once and for all that I was his friend and that I wasn’t going anywhere.
I decided to talk to him as soon as I had changed my jeans, seeing as I got milk all over them. I swiftly slipped them off and threw them on a pile of dirty clothes in a corner. I then reached for a new pair of clean ones, but before I could pull them on my eyes fell on a terrified looking Gerard standing in my doorway.
“I’m so sorry,” he choked out, his voice hoarse from crying, “First spill milk on you, and then I not knock. I’m sorry.” He ranted, tears dripping down on my floor as he wept.
I dropped the jeans in my hands on the floor and took the few steps over to his shaking body. I embraced him in a hug to calm him down, simply because I didn’t know what to say. And besides, hugging always seemed to calm him down.
After a few minutes, it seemed it was working, because he stopped shaking. I let him go and took a step back, still letting my arms rest on either side of his face.
“Gerard, it’s alright, I’m not angry.” I said steadily, not allowing my voice to tremble even a little. I needed him to hear, and see, that I wasn’t lying.
“So sorry…” He mumbled and I wiped the tears from his face, using my thumbs.
“Accidents happen, to everyone, not just you.” I said matter-of-factly before dropping my hands down to my sides. “I can be kind of clumsy as well you know.” I said and grinned at him, and finally his tears stopped and he even dared to show a smile.
“You’re not wearing any pants.” He giggled and pointed towards my bare legs. I laughed at his short attention span, but was happy that he wasn’t sad anymore.
“It would seem I’m not, but give me just a moment.” I said and jumped backwards, picking my jeans up with my feet, causing Gerard to giggle even more.
After I had pulled my jeans on I was suddenly hit over the head with something soft. With my eyes wide I turned around to see Gerard standing looking innocent with a pillow in his hands.
“Alright, you’re on!” I shouted and grabbed my other pillow.
Soon we were engaged in a wild pillow fight, a fight that could’ve gone on forever, but was cut short after Mikey showed up to see why we were shrieking and I accidentally knocked his glasses off.
“Alright, fight over!” Mikey said sternly as he bent down to pick his glasses up. Gerard and I just laughed at the angry look on Mikey’s face, but we did put the pillows back on my bed. Mikey told us it was time for lunch, so we followed him out the door.
As we walked towards the stairs I gave Gerard a grin that he immediately returned, and in front of us I could hear Mikey mutter: ‘It’s like living with two younger brothers.’
