Chapter Eight
David had been so surprised by Cook’s sudden question that he had remained speechless for the entire drive to the restaurant and hadn’t spoken much during dinner either. Cook hadn’t protested about it, thankfully. He still seemed to know David so well, even after four years of being apart and not even speaking to each other. Yes, David had grown up a lot in the past four years but he was still pretty much the same person he had always been. There wasn’t that much that was different about him. At least he didn’t think so but perhaps other people saw differently. He couldn’t be too sure. He did know now that it was in the open that Cook was back, a lot of the fans had increased their love for David again. Some hadn’t really been very supportive since the day he announced he was engaged to Emily. They knew now that he’d broken it off with Emily practically as soon as he had Cook back but that was beside the point.
The truth was, David didn’t know if he wanted to tell Cook who Ami was even though he had a feeling the older man might know. He didn’t want him to catch on to the fact that he though – no, was certain – that Ami was the girl who was responsible for Cook’s kidnapping and withholding. He was sure how Cook would react to that news but if he didn’t say something, they couldn’t work together to prevent it from happening again.
What was worse, Emily had apparently been in contact with Ami and David now knew that because Cook had told him everything. He’d explained why David had found him and Emily in such an awkward state when he’d finally come out to the lobby. However, afterward, he’d mentioned how David had come from the opposite hallway of the one he’d gone into when they had split up to do their various business affairs. David had flushed a deep red. He hadn’t expected Cook to notice that, what with the fact that he was busy beating the shit out of Emily but it seemed that Cook still didn’t miss a thing. David wasn’t so sure he wanted to tell him why that was but Cook had persisted and so David had told him how he had lied to Emily and told her he had a meeting to get to so he could get away from her faster. He explained how she’d just made him uncomfortable and he didn’t know why. Finally, he told him how he’d dashed down the hallway as soon as he’d disappeared from Emily’s view and ended up walking in on Simon and Ryan having sex.
Cook had reacted to that much in the way David had expected. His eyes had widened and his face seemed to hold a certain level of disgust. David had been sure his lover didn’t want to hear the dirty details on the relationship between Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest. He’d shaken his head in disgust and shuddered slightly at the thought of it. David had averted his eyes. There was no way that he was going to admit that despite the idea of it, he had found it rather hot. Simon had caught him in that retrospective. To be honest, now that he thought about it, David wasn’t surprised that Simon had caught him. He never seemed to miss a thing, that man.
However, the talk of what had happened to David hadn’t lasted long as conversation died down and again his mind turned to thoughts of Ami and how he was so sure that the girl had been the one behind Cook’s kidnapping. He was glad that his Cook had done what he had done to the girl, even though David didn’t really believe in harming females but you had to do what was necessary for your own protection, right? Right, he was sure that Cook had only done it out of self-defense.
The two of them were silent for the rest of the night and Cook did not press David about telling him about who Ami was. For that, David was grateful. He knew that Cook would never press him for anything he wasn’t ready to talk about and now that he thought about it, Emily had often tried to get him to tell her things he wasn’t ready to. Sure, sometimes he had backed off but only when she seemed to think it was necessary, which hadn’t been often. He hadn’t noticed what a bad thing he had had with Emily until now and he was glad he was done with it.
As he lay in bed that night, eyes wide open and Cook fast asleep next to him with one of his arms wrapped tightly around David’s waist David’s mind was reeling. He was remembering things from the past, mainly from the days before he had been on Idol, when he was just a normal sixteen year old, aside from the fact that some of the people who he went to school with knew he had won a Star Search tournament at the age of twelve with his singing ability. Unfortunately, nothing had come out of that and he had ended up suffering from a paralyzed vocal cord. It had been ages before he’d been able to regain his singing voice and when he’d first auditioned for Idol, he was sixteen. He’d turned seventeen during the run of the show. Okay, it had been less than a month before season seven premiered on TV but still, he’d been a part of the show anyway then.
That wasn’t the point though. The point was the fact that he was remembering his life before Idol, picking out all the moments where the girl, Ami had seemed to show up everywhere, bothering him and his group of friends. Most of the time though, she’d shown up when he had been alone. It really wasn’t pretty. One particular memory stood out in his mind though, one he had never thought he’d ever have to think of again but alas, it was not to be, and that very memory, surfaced his mind and terror washed into the twenty-two year olds eyes.
**********
David was sitting at the lunch table, alone. He’d been having a rather off day and had told his friends that he really just felt like being alone on that particular day. They had found it peculiar but hadn’t protested and so he sat alone at the lunch table, munching slowly on a sandwich and staring ahead of himself, looking but not really seeing. His mind was lost in thought, as he knew that soon, he may or may not be spending much time at school this year. He was going to audition for American Idol. He felt that now, he was ready for it. His singing voice was strong once again despite the paralyzed vocal cord and he had been working hard.
Despite the fact that he cared about his friends, David hadn’t bothered to tell them about the audition. He wanted to surprise them when they hopefully saw him on TV sometime in January or February. But he was nervous, something he’d never felt before. He wasn’t nervous that he would do a bad job, he was nervous that he may not be as ready for it as he thought and he would be turned away until the next year. He would be devastated if that happened. The sixteen year old had worked so hard and to see it all go down the drain like that would be rather heartbreaking for him. Though if that did happen, he would be strong and just work harder until the auditions for the following year.
David had been so lost in thought, he hadn’t even heard the bell ring to go to class and he continued to sit at the lunch table as the room emptied itself of the other students, each of them seemingly in a hurry to get to class. He continued to sit there. A teacher had seen him but having already been informed of the possibility that David may possibly be absent from school for several days, due to trying out for American Idol, they didn’t push him to go to class and just left him sitting there, feeling that it might be a good idea for him to have some time to himself. However, there had been someone there that day that didn’t see it as important to leave him alone. Her name was Ami Kelley.
“Hi David,” spoke a bright voice, as David felt someone drop onto the bench beside him. He turned his head to find Ami sitting next to him, a sickeningly sweet smile on her face and he knew that the girl must simply be up to no good. The Asian girl was adorable really but to be honest, David found her rather annoying. He wasn’t exactly the type of person to actually say something like that though so for the most part, he tolerated her presence usually.
“Not now Ami. Please leave me alone,” he said in a quiet voice, waving a hand and turning away from her. He was not in the mood to deal with her clinginess. He honestly was starting to get rather antsy about his upcoming audition. This was his last week in school before he and his parents would leave for the auditions. His mind was set on this and he honestly couldn’t have any distractions. Especially not any in the form of a girl named Ami.
“No, I don’t have to,” Ami said, her voice tinged with the slightest bit of hurt and David turned to look at her again. Didn’t she have somewhere else she needed to be, other than here bothering him? He gave her a look.
“Excuse me?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I said I don’t have to. I have just as much right to sit here as you do,” she said, now sounding rather forceful.
“And I have a right to want to be alone which I want to be right now,” he responded, narrowing his eyes in frustration at the Asian girl. “Mind telling me why you think you can just continue to sit here when I asked you so politely to please leave me alone?”
“Because I’m your girlfriend,” she replied in a frustrated tone of voice. Well, that took David by surprise. Since when had she been his girlfriend? He’d never even so much as taken her for coffee and he wasn’t about to start. He wasn’t attracted her, not in the least. Yes, she was adorable, and yes, she was pretty, but the outside was not really what attracted David. He was more interested in what was inside and in his mind Ami’s inside was very, very ugly.
“And when was I supposed to be notified of this?” he asked now starting to get rather irritated with all this. Ami glared at him and put her hands on her hips, staring him down.
“You should already know,” she spoke in a dangerous voice. Lifting one hand she jabbed her finger into his chest. “David Archuleta, you are my boyfriend and you should know that. There are no ifs, ands, or buts! And if you even so much as think of betraying me, I will hurt you!” She was practically yelling at him now. David leaned back away from her and smacked her hand away.
“I don’t recall giving you permission to run my life and make my decisions. I am not your boyfriend and I never will be. I don’t like you that way. In fact, I don’t even like you. So, kindly take your obsessive attitude and go play your games on someone else,” he said, his voice dangerously calm.
“You bastard!” Ami cried. She slapped him across the face, leaving a red mark on his right cheek. “Don’t you ever talk to me in that way again! I if I say that you’re my boyfriend, than you’re my boyfriend! I always get what I want! No one else can have you! You’re mine! And I will not tolerate that kind of attitude!” she screamed. Before David could protest she pounced on him and kissed him forcefully, ripping at his shirt with her hands.
David tried to push her off of him but she was ready for such a thing. One of her hands flew to his throat, compressing it hard enough to keep him from attempting to throw her off but not hard enough to damage his throat. He was thankful for that because if it had been hard enough to damage his throat, his hopes of passing the Idol audition were over before they had even risen to full height. In any case, her hand only stayed there for a moment and she moved it to grab hold of both his wrists, holding them pinned over his head while she unbuttoned his pants with her other hand.
David was shaking and his face had paled. What was she doing? Was she attempting to rape him? No, she couldn’t, she just couldn’t. He’d never be able to go through with the audition if she did that. However, as if his prayers were being answered, he suddenly noticed someone grip Ami by the back of the neck and pull her off of him. She had managed to slip David’s pants down about have an inch before the action and she started flailing her arms and screaming.
“Miss. Kelley, what in God’s name do you think you are doing to Mr. Archuleta?!” cried an angry voice and David noticed for the first time that it was the school principal. He prayed a silent thank you to God for the principal’s timing and he’d never been so happy to see a school official.
“He wanted it!” Ami answered immediately, still flailing her arms about and trying to escape the principal’s grasp. David went even paler if that was possible. The principal gave him one look and David knew that there was no way the principal believed Ami’s story.
“This is a serious offense Miss. Kelley. I do not believe Mr. Archuleta wanted you to attempt to violate him. You will likely be suspended for this, heavily suspended, if not expelled. Sexual harassment is something we will not tolerate here!” the principal said firmly. With a curt nod to David, the principal left, dragging Ami along behind.
**********
David sighed heavily and shivered slightly as he remembered that day. He was grateful that he had kept his nerve to audition. He had never known that it would take him all the way to the Top Two. Though he hadn’t won Idol, David considered the whole thing a blessing and he was thankful for everything the show had done for him. Most of all, he was thankful for what the experience had done for his heart. It had brought him to Cook.
Turning over, David looked at the sleeping man beside him and sighed contentedly. He couldn’t believe that the man beside him loved him just as much as he loved the man. It was mutual and the two of them had bonded instantly the moment that they had met. He’d thought at first it was just going to be an uncommon close friendship between the two of them but it had blossomed into something more over time. It had even been clear to the rest of the top twelve that the two David’s had a thing for each other.
David smiled as he felt himself start to relax. Thinking about all the good memories he had to share with Cook made him feel better and rid his mind of thoughts of Ami and Emily too. He was starting to calm down and his eyes drooped just a little. Just as he was about to drift off to sleep though, Cook’s eyes fluttered open and he smiled at the younger man. David smiled back, stroking Cook’s cheek with one of his hands, feeling the roughness of his lover’s goatee.
“You’re still awake?” Cook asked in a soft voice. David sighed lightly and nodded as Cook gently took his hand and kissed his fingertips, causing a content smile to make its way across David’s face. “What’s got you awake this late?” Cook went on. David sighed again but this time, it wasn’t very light.
“I was just thinking, that’s all,” he said. If it had been Emily next to him, she would have protested that he tell her exactly what he had been thinking of. He didn’t think Cook would do that but he couldn’t be too sure.
“Oh?” Cook asked softly. “Would you mind telling me what you were thinking about?” It was a simple request but David knew that Cook wouldn’t mind if he told him that he didn’t want to tell. Cook wasn’t the kind of person to press for answers. If you told him you didn’t want to talk about it, he wouldn’t question you and he would just leave it at that. However, after all that had been going through his mind, David felt that he was ready to answer Cook’s question about who Ami was and he shut his eyes momentarily, thinking about how best to start his explanation.
“Well, you know how you asked me who Ami was?” he started. Cook nodded his head.
“Yes,” he said, confirming the nod.
“Well, I know I didn’t tell you then and I’m sorry for that.”
“That’s alright love. You weren’t ready to say anything and I respect that. You can tell me on your own time, when you’re ready.” David couldn’t help but smile. Cook really did respect his wishes and that just made him love the man all the more.
“You just made me fall even more in love with you with that statement,” he said with a small smile. Cook smiled back.
“Glad to hear it,” he replied and gently kissed him. David’s eyes shut as he relaxed into the kiss and deepened it, the hand that had caressed Cook’s cheek flying up into the older man’s hair. Cook cupped David’s face in his hands as they kissed. The passion of the two lovers filled the room from that single solitary kiss and David saw more sparks than he had ever seen before.
He loved it when Cook kissed him. His soft lips caressing his own made David go weak in the knees and his whole body got heated. One single kiss could turn him on to no end and he never wanted to part lips with Cook. They’re first kiss had been just as magical as every kiss afterward, if not more and David remembered it very well.
**********
It had been an eventful night. David had spent the evening after the final result show of the semi-finals in his hotel room, alone for the most part. Everyone else had gone out to have fun and party. Well, except for Jason and Ramiele who were the only other two who were not old enough to drink but the two of them were spending time together and they had gone out to do something appropriate for a couple of twenty year olds. David was left alone. David Hernandez, Chikezie Carly Smithson, Michael Johns, Kristy Lee Cook, Brook White, Syesha Mercado, Amanda Overmeyer, and David Cook had all gone out to celebrate their getting through to the top twelve by partying, leaving Jason, Ramiele, and baby face David behind to vend for themselves.
It wasn’t as though David didn’t have anyone to go hang out with. Jason and Ramiele had offered to take him with them, saying the three of them could all go bowling or something. David had politely declined, telling them thank you for inviting him but he was rather tired and just wanted to rest after the evening’s events. They had been very understanding and wished him some good rest before leaving as well, making David the only one still at the hotel and not celebrating the pass to the top twelve.
The truth was, David wasn’t really very tired at all. He just wanted some alone time, alone time to think about Cook. The man was simply beautiful, gorgeous in every aspect. But it was wrong to see another man that way, wasn’t it? No, it wasn’t but it terrified him. How could David have feelings for a man that had become awkwardly close to him over the course of the competition, despite the eight-year age difference? It was something David hadn’t understood but he knew it was real, he could just feel it.
Then, as if on cue, there was a knock on the hotel room door. David lifted his head from the bed, a curious look on his face. Who would be knocking on his door at this hour? The seventeen year old had managed to get a room to himself, which wasn’t really surprising, seeing as he was the only one under the age of eighteen still in the competition. Still, he couldn’t think of anyone who would be coming to see him at the present time.
The curiosity was written all over the teenager’s face as he got up off the bed and headed for the door. There was another knock. “I’ll be there in a second,” he called out politely to whomever was waiting on the other side of the door. And he had meant a second for in the next second, David had reached the door, turned the knob, and pulled it open, only to find Cook standing there.
“Hello David,” he said in a very soft voice and David’s eyes went wide in surprise.
“David, what are you doing here? I thought you were out celebrating with the others,” he spoke in a quiet voice.
“I was but I couldn’t bare to think of myself having all that fun while you were stuck behind in a hotel room,” Cook replied. “May I come in?” David smiled and stepped aside, opening the door wider. “Thank you,” Cook said as he entered the room. David shut the door behind him.
“It’s so sweet of you to think of me,” he said in the same quiet voice. Cook turned to face him and their eyes met. In that moment, David felt butterflies in his stomach. He didn’t know what but something told him that Cook had been thinking the same thing he had. Something told him the two of them were on the same wavelength. “David?” he asked, his voice soft and gentle. It showed the innocence that lay within him.
“Yes David?” Cook replied, his voice also soft and gentle. He took several steps forward until he was merely inches away from David.
“I---,” but Cook cut him off, placing a finger to David’s lips, shushing him.
“I know,” he said. It was then that it had happened. Cook’s arms wound their way around David’s waist and he leaned in, softly pressing his lips to David’s. David’s eyes fluttered shut and he moaned softly, deepening the kiss and winding his arms around Cook’s neck.
It was like anything he had ever felt before. He could hear fireworks going off in his mind. His whole body was on fire. His knees felt weak and he knew at any moment, they would collapse from under him if he wasn’t careful. But he didn’t care. It was the moment he had been waiting for all his life and even though he was only seventeen, to David, it felt like he’d been waiting an eternity. The fire blazed through him with a force he never believed possible. Cook tightened his grip on his waist and pulled David closer, which only caused David to moan softly again. His eyes were shut so tight he could literally see the fireworks over his eyelids. It was the most amazing kiss he’d ever experienced before and all thoughts of torturous girls and singing competitions left his head as it filled with images of he and Cook together, causing him to smile into the kiss. It was immediately one of David’s happiest memories and he stored away securely in his mind as the two finally pulled apart. Both were breathing heavily and David could tell that his lips were swollen but he didn’t’ care. Cook had kissed him and he had kissed Cook back. That sealed the deal. The two of them both felt more for each other than an initial friendship.
“Wow,” was all David could muster up the breath to say. Cook simply smiled and pulled him tighter into his arms. The two of them had stayed that way for sometime before both had fallen upon the bed in the room and drifted off to sleep.
**********
“I love you,” Cook said as he pulled away. David’s eyes remained closed a moment longer as he marveled in the memory of their first kiss. He opened them finally and smiled at the man who lay beside him. Never did he love Cook more than at that very moment.
“I love you too,” he replied softly, gently kissing him again and cuddling closer to him. It was amazing, more amazing than anyone could ever imagine and David felt so lucky to be the one Cook had chosen to be with.
“You were saying?” Cook said, running a hand up and down David’s back in a soft caress.
“Huh?” David stated, forgetting entirely what he had been talking about.
“You were about to tell me who Ami was,” Cook said, still caressing David’s back.
“Oh, right,” David said, remembering what he had been saying before the kiss. “I’ll tell you in the morning. Right now, I’m really rather sleepy and I just want us to get some sleep.”
“And you don’t want to ruin the moment either,” Cook finished for him. David looked into his eyes for a moment and smiled. He ran a hand gently down Cook’s cheek, his eyes halfway shut.
“Yeah,” he confirmed. That was the last word that left David’s lips as he yawned and his eyes fluttered shut completely. Cook smiled and kissed him gently on the forehead before settling down beside him and drifting off to sleep.
