Matt’s POV
He knew Zack was stressing out with the Hunter threat. He was pretty sure he hadn’t even given a thought to the other pack they were sharing territory with and he wanted to keep it that way for as long as possible. He hadn’t told him that the she-wolf was in his history class, or that she sat next to him everyday and, non-too-discreetly, suggested he leave his pack and join hers. He had started showering before coming back to their room, Johnny and Jimmy held some spare clothes for him to change in to. He knew it was only a matter of time though before Zack would pick up on the lingering traces of her scent on him. The little wolf had a nose better than Brian’s and that was saying a lot.
He lightly shook himself away from the pushy she-wolf and focused on another source of stress for the entire pack: Brian. He was glad his old friend was starting to come out of his self-imposed celibacy, but he could’ve strangled him for picking the one woman on campus that associated with Hunters. Zack was already fast asleep in his arms, but shifted restlessly with dreams. Matt hugged him closer and pressed a chaste kiss to the back of his neck and his movements stilled. His mind was still working overtime though; Zack’s stress was stressing him out. Usually he would have Brian to talk matters over with but he was part of the problem.
He sighed in frustration and pushed that problem away and returned to the problem of the other pack. This at least was something he could talk to Jimmy about. Zack and Johnny didn’t seem to realize the danger they could be in; both were too young. Johnny’s original pack had been bordered by others but all packs in the area had been content with their members and things had stayed relatively calm. In some areas packs stole young wolves to either grow stronger to destroy a competing pack or to replace a fallen wolf.
The pack on campus was small, painfully so, and all the members they had seen were young and extremely inept with hunting. That type of desperation usually led to fights between packs and the she-wolf and Zack were already at each others’ throats. True, they were strong enough to simply kill the three puppies, but that would not reflect well on them. They would probably be completely ostracized from their wolf brethren for such actions, even if the wolves were annoying. Hunters were becoming more and more adept at killing them and their numbers were rapidly being cut down, annoying as the young pack was they were still on their side when it came to Hunters.
One of Zack’s hands lightly gripped his forearm, and Matt was tempted to just destroy the pack no matter what the repercussions. Zack didn’t know it, but the moment he had snarled at her he had started something Matt couldn’t stop. Every female wolf was naturally programmed to seek out a suitable mate, fight for them if they had too. Zack had no such instincts, only his human jealously would guide his actions. Zack had challenged the she-wolf and he didn’t even know it. Unless he kept the two apart they would fight and he had the sinking feeling that the scrawny dog was a capable fighter, else she wouldn’t be the Alpha.
Zack could fight of course, he could be down right nasty if one of his pack mates was in trouble, but he had never fought a she-wolf intent on winning a mate. Matt wouldn’t be able to help him in that fight and with the female’s desperation to find a strong mate the fight would most certainly be to the death. Zack was too soft-hearted to kill another wolf without absolute necessity. This fight was not simply about putting one wolf in its place, it was a decisive battle that if Zack lost, he would not walk away from. The other stake in the fight would be Matt himself; by natural law if the she-wolf won he would have no choice but to join their pack.
He felt a headache coming on and closed his eyes; still the maddening thoughts chased themselves in circles. A fear he rarely let show had his heart in an icy clamp, Zack’s warm hand on his forearm intensified that fear. He would do everything in his power to keep that fight from happening, even if it meant killing the whole damn pack.
Brian’s POV
He spent two hours at the museum until he heard security ushering people out so they could close. He sighed and got up and left, he still didn’t want to go back to the dorm in case his pack was on the lookout for him but he couldn’t think of anywhere else to go where he wouldn’t be bothered.
He walked back out into the balmy evening, winter could not come fast enough, he was tired of the seventy degree weather and was looking forward to the thirty and forty degree temperatures the cold season would bring. He wandered aimlessly on the various sidewalks still trying to work out either an excuse or a feasible reason for asking Michelle to join them. A simple, ‘I really like her.’ Wasn’t going to work. Matt had spent almost a month watching Zack looking for something that would make him a good wolf. Brian admitted he had thought Matt was completely out of his mind when he told him he was going to ask Zack but things had worked out wonderfully.
He had only known Michelle for a couple of weeks, not nearly long enough for him to find any traits that would suit her for life as a wolf. That, he admitted grudgingly, was another reason he had wanted Matt to come to breakfast with them. The wolf had a knack for seeing the true capabilities of people. Then again, that frightened him too; what if there wasn’t anything to see? He shook his head, banishing the thought, there had to be something, that’s why he was so drawn to her. Still the nagging feeling stayed tucked away in a deep part of his heart.
He checked his watch; he had half an hour to get to the restaurant. He slowly turned and began heading to the far end of campus, he would probably be ten minutes early but punctuality never hurt anything.
Zack’s POV
He woke up a few hours later but had lain still enjoying the comforting warmth of Matt’s body and his steady breathing. He was starting to drift off again when his nose picked up on a familiar scent.
His body went rigid and he growled deep in his chest. Matt’s arms tightened around him as he woke almost immediately. He sighed and kissed Zack’s neck, “Ignore it puppy.” He murmured. Zack was more than happy to turn in Matt’s arms and bury his head in his mate’s neck and let the she-wolf stand in the hall. She knocked softly and then it was quiet for a moment and then she knocked again louder.
“I know you’re in there.” She said softly with a biting undertone. Zack lifted his head and glared at the door but Matt pulled him down again. Zack got a wicked idea and giggled quietly. Matt raised an eyebrow, “What?”
Zack reached up and captured his lips in a heated kiss and with only a little coaxing Matt rolled onto his back while they continued to kiss. Zack broke the kiss first and attacked his mate’s neck, nipping and sucking on his sensitive skin. Matt arched into him with a quiet moan they both knew the she-wolf could hear. Matt pulled Zack’s head up and attacked his mouth again while his hands teasingly slid up his shirt and splayed against his chest. Zack roughly ground his hips against Matt’s making them both whimper.
“Need you.” Matt whispered breaking the kiss and gently biting Zack’s earlobe. Zack snickered and pushed up Matt’s shirt exposing lightly tanned skin of his belly. He ran his nose over his skin savoring the wild smell that was Matt while the older wolf whimpered above him. Zack undid his jeans; the she-wolf knocked on the door again loudly, and pulled them down. Matt sat up and pulled his shirt off and then easily stripped Zack of his. Zack pressed his cheek to the warm skin of Matt’s stomach just below his belly button and smiled mischievously when Matt’s hips pushed against him.
“And you call me impatient.” He murmured lifting his head and pulling Matt’s boxers down. Matt didn’t comment only leaned his head back and whimpered quietly while Zack’s fingers teasingly slid up and down his thighs painfully close to his erection.
The wolf banged on the door again.
Zack smirked and leaned down and swiftly took Matt’s generous length into his mouth. A short scream of pleasure and surprise escaped Matt but he clapped a hand of his mouth and moaned incoherently thrusting into Zack’s hot mouth.
Zack sucked on him hard and slid his tongue along his shaft and let his calloused fingers massage his base while he sucked and licked his head. Matt’s body shook beneath him and the sounds he was trying to muffle were getting louder as his orgasm approached. Zack deep throated him one more time and then released him. Matt raised his head and tried to give him an annoyed look, but he was still too dazed to school his features properly. Zack giggled and quickly took his pants off.
Matt sat up and pulled him down again kissing him softly before he rolled them over. Zack wrapped his legs around his waist; Matt’s lips left a trail of fire down his neck.
“Matt.” He whined quietly, Matt chuckled and kissed his chest before slowly pushing into him. Zack gasped and bucked his hips digging his short nails into Matt’s shoulders. The singer whimpered and thrust into him burying himself completely in Zack’s delicious heat. Zack gasped and arched his back pushing him deeper, Matt groaned and started moving in and out of him quickly.
Zack did his best to muffle his cries, Matt’s lips firmly attached to his helped immensely; yet whimpers, curses, and Matt’s name escaped. Matt was moving faster, driving into his sweet spot again and again. His stomach tightened and he arched up into Matt one more time and released with a sharp cry of Matt’s name. Matt made a low sound deep in his throat and thrust erratically only a few more times before familiar warmth spread through Zack’s body.
Matt collapsed on top of him; his damp forehead resting on his chest panting heavily, Zack lazily pulled his fingers through Matt’s hair savoring his mate’s presence. Once Matt’s breathing slowed a bit he shifted a little to the side so his full weight wasn’t on Zack but kept his head where it was. Zack wrapped his arms around Matt’s shoulders and gently stroked his cheek. Matt made a purring sound and Zack felt him smile against his skin.
“Matthias.” He whispered. Matt didn’t really move, only raised his head a little to show he was listening, “What is it angel?” he murmured.
“How often do you see her?”
To anyone else the movement wouldn’t have been noticeable but to Zack the slight tensing of muscles was as obvious as a seizure. Matt sighed and moved so he was fully on top of Zack again and pushed himself up so he was eye level with him. Zack lightly traced the tattoos on the inside of Matt’s arm and didn’t look at him. Matt gently nuzzled his cheek, “She’s in my history class.” He said quietly. Zack turned his head and their lips brushed, “Why didn’t you tell me?” he sounded more hurt than angry and Matt pressed their lips together for a second, “You’ve been stressed enough lately, I didn’t want you worrying about her as well.” He mumbled keeping his lips on Zack’s. Zack turned his head away again and watched his fingers trail across the color on Matt’s skin.
“Zachary I love you.” Matt whispered. Zack looked at him again, a small smile on his lips, “I know.” The smile faded, “I won’t worry about her, I promise, I just wanted to know why you didn’t tell me.”
Matt kissed him and returned to his previous position with his head on Zack’s chest, “Guess I don’t have to shower anymore.” He murmured.
“Ick, yes you do. It’s bad enough after the shower I don’t wanna know what it’s like before the shower.”
Brian’s POV
Something didn’t quite feel right. Ever since Michelle and her twin sister, Valerie, had sat down he’d been extremely uncomfortable. The conversation was light and on a surface level they were getting along great but there was something below the superficial conversation that was really bothering him. He wished he’d ask Matt to come, or Zack, probably Zack though. His intuition coupled with his mysterious way of smelling things would have figured this out before the two sisters even sat down.
He had been a little surprised at first when Michelle had walked over with a blond copy of herself but as they continued to talk he could see how different the two were, almost opposites. Valerie was outgoing and dressed to kill with a small form fitting t-shirt and tight blue jeans while Michelle was quiet and reserved wearing looser fitting jeans and a green blouse. He had tried dismissing the uncomfortable feeling as seeing the acute differences between the twins. Maybe some part of his subconscious was trying to picture Michelle in Valerie’s outfit and that was the source. As the night wore on though the feeling seemed to be getting worse.
Michelle and Valerie had sat down close to six and now eight o’ clock was rolling up. The restaurant was beginning to wind down a little but the bar area was starting to pick up. The restaurant portion closed at nine o’ clock while the bar was open until midnight every weekday night and three am on Saturday. Michelle pulled out her phone and checked the time, “Do you guys wanna walk around the campus green for awhile? It’s not late, but these guys get cranky if you stay too long and don’t let them close up on time.” She and Valerie snickered and Brian smiled, the two were so different yet in some respects they could’ve been the same person. They each left a small tip for the waitress and then headed out into the warm night to the campus green.
The campus green was actually a bit general, there were three places on campus referred to as ‘the campus green’ and they were differentiated depending on which buildings were around. Brian was assuming Michelle wanted to go to the campus green by the science building since it was the closest. He wasn’t real sure where she wanted to walk to though, there were sidewalks that criss-crossed through the green areas but they really only led to the main campus roads and the buildings.
He was hoping being outside would lesson the uncomfortable feeling but it was still there, strong as ever, but on a positive note, it wasn’t any worse. Michelle took his hand and he smiled at her when she shyly looked up at him. He gave her fingers a light reassuring squeeze and she smiled happily. Valerie was a step ahead of them talking idly about how difficult one of her professors was.
“Hey, you guys wanna go to Christy Woods?” she asked suddenly. Brian started to agree, it had been too long since he’d been immersed in woodland, but stopped when Michelle’s hand squeezed his. He gave her a worried look, “What is it?” he scanned the area but the bright streetlights revealed nothing. Valerie chuckled, “Christy Woods is supposed to be haunted. Michelle actually believes it.”
“Shut up Val.” Michelle said through gritted teeth. Brian wrapped an arm around her waist, “I won’t let anything hurt you.” He murmured pulling her closer. Michelle relaxed and leaned into him.
“Do you wanna go?” he asked, he of course wanted to take off at full speed but he would stay with Michelle if she didn’t want to. He could run with his pack another night. Michelle thought for a moment and then nodded, “If you’re here Val’s less likely to jump out and scare me.” She said only half-jokingly. Valerie snorted, “Don’t count on it.” She angled to the left and they headed to a less well-lit area of the campus green.
“So why exactly is this place supposed to be haunted?” Brian asked mostly to dislodge a sudden surge of anxiety.
“About ten or eleven years ago a girl climbed up the smokestack by the natural resource building,” she pointed to a shadow in the sky, the size of a twelve story building at least, “and jumped off. She landed in Christy woods and now she’s supposed to roam the woods at night.”
“There’s also supposed to be dark fairies in there too, which is what corrupted the girl’s spirit.” Michelle added quietly. Valerie snorted, “I’ll believe in ghosts before I believe in fairies.” She said dismissively. Brian held his tongue, he’d met a couple of wolves that claimed to be able to see such beings and a couple of them almost had him convinced they really could.
“There’s a lot of things out there we can’t explain.” He said mostly to comfort Michelle who seemed to draw in on herself with her sister’s words. Valerie looked over at him, “Don’t tell me you believe in fairies.” She said rolling her eyes. Brian was unfazed, “I’ve never seen a dodo bird,” which was a lie, but they didn’t need to know that, “doesn’t mean that at one time they didn’t exist.”
Valerie thought that over for a second and then shrugged, “No good way to argue that.” She said. They were away from the lit sidewalks of the campus green, now the only source of light was from the parking lot lights, which really weren’t any help at all. Brian wasn’t bothered but he slowed with Michelle acting like he was having problems seeing the ground and their surroundings as well.
Valerie took the lead and slipped through a gap in the chain link fence that surrounded the woods. The campus had several pieces of woodland and wetlands that the natural resource and botany classes used for research and experiments. Most of them were donations of private land that students needed transportation to get to. Christy Woods was the only one on campus and a fair amount of the students used it for partying and, on Halloween, scaring the living daylights out of each other.
Brian took a deep breath, the soil was damp and the area was dominated by honeysuckle; he also caught Michelle’s scent which sent a number of ideas streaming through his mind. He lightly shook himself and easily followed Valerie as she taunted Michelle by calling for the fairies and the ghost to show themselves. Michelle shuddered but didn’t say anything; Brian tightened his arm around her and kissed her forehead. He could see her smile light up her face in the gloom.
He could feel his own anxiety getting worse the further into the woods they went. He was beginning to wonder if there really were fairies and a ghost roaming through the trees and thick honeysuckle. The wolf was driving him insane, it screamed for him to run, to get away from the woods as fast as his paws could carry him and find Matt. He didn’t want to be alone in the woods anymore, not even Michelle’s presence could dull the feeling; he wanted Matt. He needed to feel safe again and he felt safest with Matt. He slowed his pace and tried to come up with a reason to leave.
“What’s wrong Brian?” Michelle asked. He realized he’d stopped completely. His usually quick mind was overshadowed by a very real terror, “I was thinking we could scare your sister and get out of here at the same time.” He said quietly. The excuse was weak and he was hoping Michelle didn’t feel too loyal to her sister. To his relief she giggled, “Payback is such a bitch. Let’s go.” She tugged his hand and he quickly began leading the way back. He could deal with Matt yelling at him or whatever; he just wanted to be with his Alpha again.
Hot pain tore through his shoulder just below his clavicle. He yelped and fell back, the arrow struck his shoulder blade sending another wave of pain through him. He tore the arrow out and tossed it to the side snarling.
“Brian!” Michelle screamed. He saw a Hunter coming up behind her and was on his feet in a second. He tackled the man to the ground and easily crushed his windpipe and spine. He whipped around searching frantically for Michelle and was blinded by bright search lights. He snarled and stumbled back a step.
“Brian!” Michelle’s voice was off to his right. He couldn’t see her though, the lights were too bright. His nose told him there were three more people; he could hear Michelle struggling against someone swearing like a sailor. He would’ve laughed if he hadn’t been in danger of losing his life.
“Shut up Michelle.” Valerie’s voice was cold and Brian’s stomach dropped. He really wished he would’ve brought Matt and Zack with him. If he had he’d be back in his room or theirs cursing them and throwing a tantrum but he wouldn’t be here.
“Val what the hell is going on?” Michelle cried. Brian screamed when another arrow embedded itself in his thigh. The leg gave out and he pulled the silver out and threw it at one of the lights. The bulb burst and now he only had one left to contend with. He could see Michelle being held securely by a large Hunter but still struggling defiantly. Valerie was off to the side glaring death at him, “You two can go.” She said dismissively. Without a word the Hunter holding Michelle released her and another dropped down from the trees, a quiver of silver arrows on his back. His leg and arm were numb but he knew the wounds were bleeding freely.
“Stay the hell away from him Michelle!” Valerie snapped. The brunette twin faltered mid-stride but shook off her sister’s words and rushed to Brian’s side. Brian shook his head and kept her at arm’s length, “Michelle don’t get in the middle of this.” He said softly.
“Get in the middle of what?” she yelled, “You two didn’t even know each other before dinner!”
“I didn’t know him, but I met his pack mate.” Valerie spat. Brian snarled venomously, so this was the blond woman that had threatened Jimmy.
“Pack mate? What the hell are you talking about?” Michelle’s voice was high and tears fell down her cheeks. Brian wanted to comfort her but didn’t take his attention off the Hunter in front of him. Instead he shook his head, “Michelle you need to go. Go back to your room.”
“No.” she snapped, “I’m not leaving you.” She pushed his hand to the side and pulled him close. As wonderful as it felt having her close he wouldn’t let her die because of him. Hunter’s killed wolves and they killed the people attached to wolves, just because Valerie was her sister didn’t mean she’d show her any mercy. Zack’s brother had proven that.
“It’s complicated love,” he whispered, “but you need to get away from me.” He sighed when her grip on his forearm tightened.
“Get away from him Michelle; you don’t know what he is.” Valerie snapped. Michelle stood up quickly and moved in front of him, the bravest thing he’d ever seen her do. Though she didn’t know how fool hardy it was.
“I don’t know what you are either Valerie. Ever since this school year started you’ve been coming and going at odd hours, you barely take the time to say ‘hi’ to me, you’re moody and angry and now this!” She shouted. “You’re not my sister; I don’t know what you are!”
Brian forced himself to his feet and gently pushed Michelle to the side, he had to end this soon or else he was going to be too weak to fight, “Leave her out of this.” He growled. Valerie’s glare turned icy, “You’re the one who brought her into it.” She sneered. He snarled and lunged at her. There was a flicker of surprise in her eyes when he knocked her down but it was quickly covered with a chilling hatred. She pulled a knife from her waist and slashed at him as he rolled away. The silver blade bit into his already injured arm and he yelped.
He brought his legs up to his chest and kept her from putting the knife in his heart, but when he tried to push her off his injured leg buckled and she only fell to the side. She recovered faster than him and jammed the blade into his unprotected side. He shrieked and back handed her as hard as he could. She fell back stunned and he stumbled to his feet before collapsing again. He was losing blood rapidly from his shoulder and leg and now there was a knife buried in his side.
The Hunter wasn’t down long; she pulled out another, smaller, knife from her pant leg and came at him again. Brian took a deep breath and jerked the knife in his side out, his vision swam and darkened but he stayed conscious long enough to plant the knife in her knee before she could dodge it. She screamed and fell to the ground next to him. Brian tried to drag himself away from her but before he could get out of her reach she ripped his abdomen open with her smaller knife. He rolled on his side and tore his shirt off, his consciousness was fading and his wounds burned like fire. He got out the rest of his clothes and shifted and began running to Matt.
Zack’s POV
He wasn’t sure how long they slept, but when he woke up the room was dark with night. Matt was still sleeping peacefully on his chest and he ran his fingers over the smooth skin of his cheek and neck. He wasn’t real sure why he was awake but listening to Matt’s gentle breathing was quickly lulling him back to sleep. Something was bothering him though. He took a deep breath and tensed when he smelled blood, a lot of it.
“Matt, Matthias wake up.” he said tersely. Matt was up and looking at him with a sleepy wariness, “What is it angel?” he murmured. Zack didn’t answer and instead got up and opened the door. Brian collapsed in his arms, his breathing was fast and erratic and the sharp smell of his blood quickly filled the room. He heard Matt suck in a breath and Zack passed off the bigger wolf to him and checked the hallway and bit his lip. It was amazing Brian had even made it inside naked and bleeding. It would be a miracle if they could clean the bloody hand prints and smears off the wall and carpet before morning without anyone noticing. He heard Matt speaking softly to Brian in ancient Greek and, grabbing a pair of boxers, he slipped out the door and hurried down to Jimmy and Johnny’s room.
He knocked on the door quietly so he wouldn’t disturb the neighbors and after a moment a sleepy Johnny opened the door. He woke a little more when he saw Zack standing there in only a pair of boxers, “Wassup Zacky?” he yawned.
“We need to do some cleaning, now.” He said tightly. Johnny woke the rest of the way up and looked at Zack with scared eyes when his mind and nose processed the heavy smell of blood in the hallway. Jimmy came up behind him completely awake, “Where is he?” he asked softly.
“Matt has him.” Zack said. Jimmy nodded after a moment and grabbed a shower cloth off the rack by the door, “Then we need to get busy.”
Matt’s POV
He didn’t think his heart would start again when he saw Brian collapse in Zack’s arms. He was covered in blood, all of it his and he was still bleeding. It barely registered in his mind that Zack left all his attention was on the pale man in his arms. He kissed his forehead and carried him over to his bed and gently set him down. He whispered quietly to him in his native language, Brian’s eyes fluttered but he didn’t respond. Matt hesitated for a moment but flipped on the light over his bed. He couldn’t help him unless he could see the damage completely.
There was a hole in his shoulder still oozing blood and a deep slash on the same arm that was crusty with dried blood. His stomach was smeared with blood and it was still pumping out of the deep wound at a sickening pace. There was another hole in his thigh it was bleeding heavily as well. All of the wounds were beginning to blacken around the edges; little flecks of silver were still embedded in them. He cursed viciously and pulled the unconscious wolf into his arms, “Come on puppy stay with me.” He whispered.
Thankfully the bathroom was empty when Matt went in; he needed to rinse the blood and remaining silver off of Brian before he could bind his wounds. Brian squirmed in his arms and he gently shushed him and set him on the tiled floor.
The bathroom was divided into two nearly identical sections. The left half had six sinks, seven bathroom stalls and then a curtained off area with four showers. The right side had the same number of sinks but only six bathroom stalls and only two showers. Separating the two sides was a door that only the janitors had a key too. Matt took Brian to the right side and closed the door and curtain leading into the small room.
He turned the water on and adjusted the temperature and gently began wiping the blood off of Brian. He stirred only a little, the blood pouring out of his stomach was beginning to ebb and Matt pulled him into his arms again, “Brian, puppy, you need to change.” He murmured in Greek. Brian turned his head a little, but didn’t change. Matt sighed and shut the water off. His ears and nose told him no one was in the bathroom and he snuck back to his room.
There was only a little blood on his comforter and he set Brian down on it again before getting gauze and tape out of his shirt drawer and after a moment of hesitation he grabbed a needle and thread out too. The first wound he tended too was the deep one in his abdomen. He threaded the needle put in only a few loose stitches, enough to hold the skin together so it would heal faster. Then he wrapped the deep slash on his arm that had started to bleed again in the shower and quickly took care of the arrow wounds in his shoulder and thigh.
Brian was still unconscious and Matt lay down next to him, pulling him close and quietly sang Shasta’s lullaby.
Territory that will become Italy 145 ad
He tried to keep his enthusiasm at bay, but hearing Brian had him tearing through the underbrush at lightening speeds. He howled again and Brian answered, he was close. He jumped over a log into a tiny open place between trees and saw Brian’s familiar black form. He resisted the urge to jump on him and invite him to a game; it had been so long since he had felt any sort of companionship he thought he would go mad. Brian didn’t seem as enthusiastic to see him though and some of his excitement faded. He shifted and Brian followed, “It’s been awhile puppy.” He said quietly. Brian nodded distractedly, “Have you seen her?” he asked. Matt blinked and slowly shook his head. Brian whimpered, “I have to find her.” He shifted back to his wolf form without a word and took off into the trees.
Matt bit his lip and resisted the urge to scream as the sounds of his passage faded. He fell back into his own wolf form but didn’t have the energy to go anywhere. He lay down where he was, the happiness of finding Brian again was gone, replaced by a deep ache. He could change someone else, he only needed to bite them and then he wouldn’t be lonely again. He snorted, he bit Brian and here he was lonely. He whimpered and curled into a ball and let his bushy tail cover his nose.
He was startled out of his sleep sometime later when Brian howled again. He forced himself to stay in his little ball. Brian howled again and the plaintive cry broke his weak resolve and he howled back. He found Brian again but this time stayed back, and waited for Brian to make the first move. The black wolf whimpered pitifully and once again Matt’s resolve crumbled and he walked over to him and licked his cheek. Brian shifted and pulled Matt close. The sudden movement surprised him but he got over it quickly and shifted as well, Brian’s cheek was pressed against his chest and he could feel warm tears on his skin.
“What happened puppy?” he murmured. Brian didn’t answer for a moment and even when he did it wasn’t much of an answer, “I—we, fought.” He sniffed, Matt held him closer, his little wolf sounded completely broken. Matt pressed a kiss to the top of his head and Brian nuzzled his chest, “I have to find her.” He whimpered, “There were Hunters after us, if they catch her…” he shuddered and a sob caught in his throat.
“I’ll help you puppy. I’ll help you find her.” Matt whispered, though the words tore him apart. Once they found Shasta Brian would disappear again and he would be alone, but he couldn’t stand to see his puppy so hurt. Brian lifted his head and pressed a small kiss to his neck, “Thank you.” He whispered fervently. Matt wiped his tears away and picked him up, “We need to start looking.” He said.
They ran through the night, neither of them caught Shasta’s scent. Brian was becoming more and more distraught as the hours wore on. Matt had to force him to stop and eat, he wasn’t bone thin yet but he was well on his way there. His coat was beginning to lose some of its luster and his paws were starting to bleed.
“Brian you need to rest for the night.” He said gently. Brian shook his head vehemently, “No, not until I find her.”
Matt gently took his face in his hands, “Puppy how long have you been running?” he asked softly. Brian was quiet for a moment, “I don’t know.” He said weakly. Matt ran a hand down his face, “You need to sleep Brian, you’re going to kill yourself or be too weak to find her. You need sleep, food, and water.” He lightly kissed his forehead when Brian started to shake his head, “I’m not taking no for an answer puppy.”
Brian caved and rested his cheek on Matt’s chest again, “I, I just have to find her. If something bad happens to her…” he shuddered again and started to pull away, Matt lay down and pulled him with him, “We’ll find her puppy.” He said reassuringly. Brian curled against him and within minutes was asleep. Matt was awake awhile longer, listening for a howl or a footstep, anything that would give Brian peace of mind.
The next day passed the same way, they combed the landscape for Shasta. Matt made Brian stop every now and then to drink and eat something. The days continued, Brian was growing more and more desperate and Matt was beginning to think the she-wolf was either dead or they were never going to find her until Brian caught her scent one evening.
They had been running through a fairly open space when he came to an abrupt halt and sniffed the wind, he let out a yip of sheer joy and took off after the scent. Matt caught her scent as well, but it took him a little longer, the trail was old and he wasn’t as familiar with her scent as Brian was. The scent he did pick up on though was of horses, men, and metal.
He sprinted to catch up to Brian and promptly tackled him to the ground with a firm but non-deadly bite to the scruff to keep him from yelping. Matt shifted and stroked Brian’s muzzle, “Hush puppy, there are men and horses up ahead and they’re armed.” He murmured. Brian shuddered and shifted. A momentary thrill went through Matt when he was pressed against Brian’s smooth body but he suppressed it as best he could.
“Shasta is ahead.” He whispered, his voice was strained. Matt pressed a kiss to the back of his neck, “We need to find where the men are camped and then we can circle them and get back on her trail.” He whispered. Matt shifted and padded stealthily forward he heard Brian quietly follow his path.
The camp was only a half mile from where Matt had tackled Brian, the men had fires burning and were drinking and conversing loudly. Brian whimpered and Matt shot him a look but he didn’t quiet. He lunged forward and Matt pounced on him. The commotion was mostly covered by the men’s noise but some closer to the trees peered into the thickening darkness suspiciously. Matt shifted like he had earlier and held Brian’s muzzle closed, “Shut up Brian.” He hissed. Brian shifted and reached toward the group of men, “Shasta.” He cried hoarsely. Matt’s head shot up and he searched the circle of men for the woman or her wolf form. His body went cold and he closed his eyes when he saw the beautiful pure white coat reflecting the colors of the roaring fires draped around one of the larger men’s shoulders; a delicately shaped head with lifeless blue-gray eyes at his feet. Brian was sobbing under him, Matt pressed his lips against his ear, “Shift puppy, we need to get away from here.” He said softly. Brian shook his head, Matt held him as close as he could, “Brian,” he murmured, “Brian you can’t help her, if they catch us we’ll die too.”
“Let them.” He whispered.
Present Day
He wasn’t sure when he fell asleep, but he knew when Zack returned with Jimmy and Johnny. Zack leaned down and kissed both his and Brian’s foreheads, “No one saw him.” He murmured. Matt reached up and trailed his fingers down his face, Zack held his hand against his neck, “We’ll keep him safe Matt.” He said. Johnny hopped up on the bed behind Matt and licked his cheek before cuddling against his back. Zack gave him a mock glare, “Cuddle your own mate.” He said scratching his side. Johnny’s tail thumped against the bed and Matt smiled a little. He saw Jimmy, also in his wolf form, settled against the door.
Zack kissed him again, “Go back to sleep Matty.”
Matt raised his head and Zack kissed him on the lips and then brushed his fingers down Brian’s face before succumbing to sleep.
He woke up the next morning when Brian stirred, he opened his eyes and found two dark brown sleepy eyes looking back at him, “Matthias?” he whispered. Matt pressed their foreheads together, “Yes puppy.” He murmured. Brian smiled a little, “You haven’t called me puppy in ages.” He said.
“I don’t think you’ve ever gotten yourself this banged up before.” Matt murmured. Brian winced, “I don’t really remember what happened.” He admitted quietly. Matt raised an eyebrow, “But?” he coaxed. Brian’s eyes widened and then he scowled, “You know me too well.” He muttered. Matt pulled him a little closer and kissed his cheek, “Better than you know.” He murmured. Brian relaxed completely in his arms and nudged his head under Matt’s chin, “But,” he sighed, “I remember thinking I wanted you. You and Zack.” He whispered. Matt didn’t comment but stroked his neck. Brian purred quietly and his breathing began to even out and soon he was asleep again.
“Zack.” Matt murmured once he was asleep again. Two fuzzy red ears peeked up over the bed followed by two gemstone eyes and a white muzzle. He wagged his tail happily and shifted, “I’m glad he’s awake.” He said, “Even if it was only for a moment.”
“Did you find out where he was?” Matt asked. Zack shook his head, “No, the Hunter scent was thick, I think they followed him.” He said softly. Matt tensed and a low growl rumbled in his chest. He felt Johnny go rigid behind him but Zack stood up and reached over him to soothe the puppy.
“But,” he continued while calming Johnny, “that doesn’t make sense. Why would they follow and not kill? He was nearly dead when we found him it wouldn’t have taken much more to finish the job.”
“They wanted to know where the rest of us were.” Matt said quietly. “They knew he would come to us.”
Zack’s face clouded, “I didn’t think about that.” He said softly. Matt reached up and brushed his thumb over his cheek, “It’s rare, but sometimes they do think before they kill.” He whispered. “Go back to sleep angel, I know you were up half the night worrying.”
Zack gave him a wry smile and kissed his temple, “I love you.”
“I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Matt murmured. Zack smiled and then shifted back to his wolf form and settled in front of the bed again.
His wolf mind was awake before his human mind and on full alert when he finally struggled into the waking world. Jimmy was on his feet glaring at the door, hackles up and a quiet growl coming from him. Zack was also up in a defensive position, hackles raised from the base of his skull to the base of his tail. Johnny wasn’t standing but he was on alert still pressed against Matt’s back. There was another knock on the door, “Matt, Zack? I-I need to talk to you.” Michelle’s quiet voice was loud in the quiet room. Brian stirred in his arms. Matt tried to put him back to sleep but he struggled into the waking world anyway, “What’s goin’ on Matt?” he mumbled.
“Nothing puppy go back to sleep.” He murmured. She knocked again; Brian turned to the door and tensed.
“They won’t hurt you puppy. Not again.” Matt kissed his temple and he relaxed.
“Matt please, I know you have to be in there.”
Brian tried to sit up but Matt easily kept him down and gently covered his mouth, “Hush puppy,” he whispered, “Zack can smell Hunter on her.” He said gently. Brian shook his head and pulled his hand down, “Her sister, Valerie. That’s the Hunter that threatened Jimmy, they’re twins.” He said. Matt still held him but he wasn’t trying to get up anymore, “Which means she might as well be one.” He said burying his head again under Matt’s chin.
“She tried to protect me.” He said after a moment. Matt stayed quiet but Brian continued anyway, “She didn’t know her sister was a Hunter, she didn’t even know what was going on.”
“Do you want to talk to her?” Matt asked. Brian tensed and was silent for a moment, “I-I don’t…”
Matt let go of him and shifted, Brian looked at him and then at the door and nodded. Johnny hopped off the bed and went to open the door.
“Hey, uh, Matt, I’m a little naked here.” Brian said scratching under his chin; Matt grinned and hopped of the bed. He shifted and pulled a pair of boxers out of his top drawer and tossed them to Brian. Brian caught them easily and quickly slipped them on. Matt shifted back and jumped back on the bed with him. Johnny rolled his eyes and opened the door and shifted back and stepped back when it swung open. Jimmy had retreated to the alcove where Zack’s bed was and Johnny slunk back over to the bed and lay down in front of it. Zack was sitting pleasantly a couple feet away from the bed but his hackles were still up. Michelle jumped back and her hand found its way to her throat until she saw Brian lying on the bed with Matt.
“Brian? Brian are you okay?” she sounded as if she were on the verge of tears. Brian nodded after a moment, “You can come in, they won’t hurt you.” He said softly. Cautiously Michelle entered the room and after a moment’s hesitation softly closed the door behind her. Matt rested his head on Brian’s chest and watched her every move with a critical eye.
“Val…told me…she said some pretty crazy stuff. I mean for someone who doesn’t believe in fairies and all.” She smiled weakly and a tear slid down her face. Matt knew it was killing Brian to see her like this but he was holding himself remarkably well.
“What’d she tell you?” he asked softly. Michelle looked at the floor and bit her lip, “A lot of lies and something crazy about werewolves.” She finally said. She looked up again and Matt felt Brian’s heart speed up.
“She said…she said, well, first she said you were a werewolf,” she snorted and Matt rubbed his cheek on Brian’s chest to soothe him as she continued in a quieter voice, “and she said you would hurt me.”
“No…” Brian said softly. She smiled again, a genuine smile, “Like I said, a bunch of lies and something crazy about werewolves.” She hugged herself and looked at the floor, “But,” she said tremulously, “if the werewolf thing is crazy, you should be in the hospital.” She looked up at him and Brian sighed but didn’t say anything. “Brian please tell me she needs medication or something.” She begged.
“I’m sorry Michelle.” He said quietly. She shook her head, “Werewolves don’t exist.” She said firmly. Brian sat up a little more and Matt lifted his head off his chest so he didn’t put more pressure on his damaged muscles, “This from a girl that believes in fairies?” he countered. Michelle held her ground, “Werewolves change at the full moon, we’ve been out before during a full moon. You were just fine, no fangs or claws or fur.”
Brian’s laugh was harsher than usual, “Do you believe everything you see in the movies?” he asked tightly. Michelle shook her head, “I don’t believe anything unless I see proof.” She said stubbornly. Brian shook his head, “That would probably be best.” He said quietly. Someone knocked on the door and all four wolves tensed. Michelle backed up shaking.
“They won’t hurt you Michelle, I promise.” Brian said. Matt left the bed and nosed Zack’s side, he could smell the she-wolf on the other side of the door. Zack snarled and Michelle cowered back. Jimmy stood and she let out a short scream and sank down to the floor. The door opened and the she-wolf barged in, she found Michelle immediately, “Who the hell are you?” she snarled. Matt shifted and easily pinned the annoying female against the door by her throat, “I don’t recall giving you permission to enter my territory.” He said dangerously. The she-wolf gasped and tried to pry his fingers off her neck. Zack stood behind him still growling.
Matt heard Brian get off the bed and out the corner of his eye saw him kneel next to Michelle and pull her into his arms and tried to calm her. His full attention was brought back to the she-wolf when she lashed out and caught Zack full in the face with her sharp nails. Zack yelped and stumbled back a step but when he recovered from the surprise he tried to lunge at her. Jimmy stepped in and effectively kept him from attacking the other wolf.
“Infertile bitch.” Matt hissed, he cracked her in the head and she slumped to the floor unconscious. He ignored Brian and Michelle and instead focused on getting the homicidal glint out of Zack’s eyes. Jimmy stepped back and let Matt handle the enraged man, “Zachary,” he whispered calmly. Zack ignored him for the most part, though his growl lost some of its potency, “Zachary.” He said again, a little more of the anger faded, but he was still intent on killing the other wolf. Matt kissed the corner of his mouth and along his jaw; Zack’s anger lost a significant amount of its fury. Matt pressed a kiss to his lips and he was calm again. Matt smiled, and kissed his cheek.
“Keep him away.” He said to Jimmy. The big grey wolf wrapped an arm around Zack’s waist and held him close. Zack scowled but didn’t try to get away from him. Matt turned his attention to the terrified Michelle.
She had her head buried in Brian’s chest, Brian looked up at him dully and Matt pressed a tender kiss to his forehead. Michelle peeked at him and shivered. Matt gave her a humorless smile, “We don’t need a full moon to change after the initial transformation. It comes at will.” He said quietly. Michelle nodded a little but it didn’t look like she had processed all that information.
“What’s going on?” she whimpered. Matt looked at the unconscious female on the floor, “Minor issue between packs.” He said lightly. Brian snorted, “If you want to call them a pack. More like a band of roving dogs.”
“Glad to see you back to your charming self Brian.” Jimmy said. Zack was back in his wolf form getting his belly rubbed. Brian smiled at them.
“Is she dead?” Michelle asked quietly, there were tears on her face and Brian gently wiped them away, “No, far from it. She’ll be awake and annoying us again in an hour or two.” He sighed. Michelle uncurled a little more and looked up at Matt, “You didn’t have to hit her like that.” She accused. Matt looked down at the she-wolf and shrugged, “She attacked my mate.” He said easily, Brian glared at him and he sighed, “We have a different set of rules and etiquette than regular humans.” He explained. Zack’s head appeared on his shoulder and his arms circled his waist. Matt reached up and held his head closer.
“What kind of rules? You just attack people?” she squeaked. Matt almost rolled his eyes but stopped himself for Brian’s sake. “They’re rules our wolf half dictates, for the most part confrontations end without bloodshed; but if someone initiates an aggressive action then it kind of goes along with the ‘eye for an eye’ thing.” He said. Michelle nodded, “Then I guess they weren’t all lies.” She said quietly. Brian tensed and Matt stayed quiet.
“What? That we’re brutish, uncivilized, excessively violent, and a general pest?” Jimmy said, “That’s what people thought about the Vikings actually. I guess we could take it as a compliment. They had a rather complex and ordered society and religion.”
Michelle stared at him, “How do you know what people thought about Vikings? Are they your specialty or something?”
Johnny snickered; he was in his usual spot against Jimmy’s side. Jimmy shrugged, “I sailed with them for a few years with my father and later lived in the area controlled by the Visigoths; they didn’t appreciate the Vikings burning and plundering their villages and towns.”
Michelle continued to stare at him and then slowly shook her head, “That’s not possible, the Visigoths controlled parts of Germany after the fall of Rome—”
“Don’t remind me.” Matt muttered. Zack bit back a smile and kissed his neck.
“—that would make you…”
“A little over fifteen hundred years old, yes.” Jimmy said. Michelle shuddered, “Humans don’t live that long.” She said faintly. Brian tightened his arms around her, “We’re not entirely human.” He murmured. Still, she shook her head, “How old are you?” she asked. Brian looked up at Matt, Matt thought about it for a moment and then shrugged, “Somewhere in the first century ad.” He said. Brian nodded, “I think I was born in year zero actually.” He said. Michelle’s mouth moved but no sound came out, “You really are werewolves.” She said finally; Brian nodded. She looked around the room and then back at Brian, “I’ve been dating a werewolf…I wanted to have sex with a werewolf.”
Matt thought about saying something about Brian’s stamina but decided she wouldn’t appreciate the joke. Michelle bit her lip and without a word stood up and all but ran out the door. Brian watched her impassively, but Matt knew when his puppy was hurting. He knelt down and pulled Brian into his arms, the black wolf put his head under his chin, “Hurts.” He whispered. Matt took him back to his bed and set him down again, “Go to sleep puppy,” he whispered, “we’ll be here when you wake up.”
Brian nodded and closed his eyes. Matt brushed hair off his forehead and gave him a gentle kiss before turning around and eyeing the still unconscious she-wolf, “Well, were do we want to dump her?” he asked.
