Part 8, The Near Past
“What?”
Tegoshi reached over and took her hand in his, entwining his fingers with hers. “You know my mother. So it’s not like you’ll be having dinner with a stranger.”
“It’s not that,” Dani stopped at her door and pulled her key out of a pocket.
His other hand fell on her far shoulder, and turned her to face him. “Then what is it? Tell me, Dani.”
She shrugged, and flushed, toying with the keys in her one hand. “It’s different now. I see it when I’m tutoring her. I’m not her teacher anymore, I’m your girlfriend.” She glanced up briefly to see his reaction to her words. She didn’t want to offend him in any way.
Tegoshi frowned. “Has she said anything?”
“No.” Dani sighed heavily. “When you say family you mean how many relatives?”
A small smile tugging at his lips, he drew her closer, and nuzzled her temple. “I’m not sure. I know my mother and grandmother will be there. My grandmother is the one who said to invite you.”
She knew he said invitation, but she shouldn’t turn it down. “When?”
He slid his hand down to her back, and rubbed at it soothingly. “Tomorrow. I’ll be there with you,” he whispered against the soft, fragrant skin just below her jaw. They’d been dating three weeks now, and to this day the feel of her in his arms was like holding her for the first time. He got excited, and warm, and didn’t want to let her go. The rest of the world receded to the far reaches of his consciousness, like a memory or shadow, and the only thing he became aware of was holding her.
A small sound of pleasure rumbled in her throat, and she turned her head so she could nuzzle his cheek. “I can hear the landlady coming up the stairs.” Reluctantly he let her go, and she turned to the door. Her hand shook slightly. It always took her a moment to compose herself after his hugs or kisses. She’d been hugged and kissed before, but Tegoshi’s warmed her to her soul. After a moment she unlocked the door, and they went inside.
Tegoshi had just removed his shoes when he felt a tug on his shirt, and then Dani was pressed against him, her arms around him tight. His encircled her as well. “What’s this?” he asked, pleased by her boldness.
“I just want you to hold me,” she whispered at his throat. Eyes shut she was able to block out everything but his warmth and scent, and the feel of his pulse against her lips. Wickedly she flicked the tip of her tongue against his skin, and felt his pulse leap and race. “I can feel your heart racing,” she stated.
She was absolutely wicked! His heart pounded, and his head fell back some to give her more access. He wanted her to do that again, and she didn’t disappoint. Her tongue flicked at his neck, and then she blew softly on the moist skin. He moaned, his hold on her tightening. Her teeth nibbled at his neck, and he caught her head in his hands, lifting her face, and kissed her hard, his tongue sweeping past her teeth to stroke hers. His breathing was harsh, and she made those sexy little sounds in her throat that he liked so much.
Tegoshi was sweet and shy looking, but Dani had learned that he had quite the naughty streak that ran through him. He still had a line he refused to cross until he was of legal age, but he toed it. Right now the way he was kissing her was just shy of being sinful. She wondered how he’d kiss her once he turned 20 in a week. The thought of it made her shiver with anticipation.
“Yuya?” she panted against his lips. He grunted a reply, and she smiled. “Do you promise you’ll be there?”
“I promise,” he whispered between kisses. His thumbs stroked the pale softness of her cheeks, his other fingers splayed wide to hold her up for his kisses. “I have to work, but I’ll be there.”
“Yuya…”
He kissed her again, deeply, cutting her off. He liked the sound of his name off her lips, but he didn’t want to talk right now. His hands slid down her back to her waist, and drew her tighter to him. While still kissing her he backed her towards the room with the kotatsu and her futon. He knew where each was, and he steered her towards the futon, leaning into her until she sank down onto it and he could follow her. He did not lay over her though it was tempting to do so. Instead he sat on the edge of the futon, leaning over her as she lay there amidst the stuffed toys he’d given her as gifts. As he slid his hands out from beneath her he felt bare skin where her top had risen slightly above the waist of her denims. Soft and warm, it invited his touch, and the fingers of one hand burrowed under the hem of her top and caressed her belly.
It was like a forbidden touch, and he moaned into her mouth before hungrily moving his moist lips along her jaw to just below her ear. His teeth scraped down to the hollow where shoulder met neck, and he suddenly pushed away. “I have to go.” He leaned down to kiss her briefly. “I’ll call you in the morning.” His body ached, and he knew it would be best to leave before he couldn’t stop. He hurried to the door to put his shoes on, wincing at the uncomfortable bulge he sported.
She would have called his name, but knew it wouldn’t have been fair. “Drive home safe,” she told him, like she did each time he left. She didn’t get up to go lock the door until he was gone, and she heard his car pulling out.
………………
The Near Past
Dammit! He was going to have to break his promise, and he didn’t like that one bit. Lifting his cell to his ear he waited while it rang. “Oh, Dani!”
There was a heavy pause. “You’re calling me. That means you’re not here. Where the hell are you?”
He winced. “At work.” She made a sound, and he lifted a hand to halt her as if she could see him. “Hold on! I’ll be late, but I’ll be there! I promise!” He winced again. Why was he promising when work could screw him over again?
“Why are you calling now? Yuya! I rang the bell, and I can hear someone coming to the door!”
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m really sorry. It’s not my fault. It’s work. I swear I’ll be there as soon as I can. You can do this. It’s only my mother.”
She made a sound again. “Fine. You so owe me! Like a foot massage or… I’ll make you clean the toilet or something!”
“I know,” he agreed, still wincing. “I swear I’ll make it up to you.” He heard her sigh, and knew she’d accepted the inevitability of his absence. “I’ll see you soon. I promise. Dani…” He paused. “Soon.”
After he hung up he grimaced. He had come so close to telling her he loved her. He did. He just didn’t want to tell her for the first time over the phone. His break was over so he put his cell away and got back to work. It was entertainment, but Johnny wanted his entertainers to be the best they could. That meant hours of practice and training a day. It meant choreography and learning lines and whatever else was needed. Be it for one of the Shounen Club shows or a dorama or anything else.
It was an hour later when he entered. He would have called out, but didn’t want to interrupt them. He got to the kitchen door and halted. His mother was talking, and he was startled by what she was saying.
“Sensei, why would you get involved with my son? He’s not even 20 yet,” she blurted out. “Was it something you decided to do from the first time you saw him?”
Tegoshi took a step to interrupt when Dani replied. “When I saw him I have to admit I was taken by his handsomeness. He smiled, and my heart started to beat faster. I didn’t go out of my way to win him. Actually I tried my best to avoid him.” He saw a soft, reminiscent smile on her face, and it made his heart pound. “I was actually afraid of what could happen because he’s a Johnny’s. I don’t want his future harmed by his being with me, but honestly? I couldn’t stop myself falling in love with him even if I tried. I knew I felt strongly for him the first time we spent a day together. It hurt so bad to deny him. I couldn’t do it anymore.”
Tegoshi’s mother listened, and then nodded. “And if being with you does threaten his future? Are you prepared to do what it takes to save it? He is my son, and I want a good future for him. I don’t want him to struggle to live like so many others. Not even for a woman.”
“I understand that,” Dani nodded. “And if I knew that my being with him was destroying his future I would have no choice but to end it. It would hurt, but like you I don’t want him to struggle to live. I know how powerful Johnny is, and I wouldn’t want him to not be able to have a future at all. Not even for me.”
Tegoshi’s heart now pounded wildly. He didn’t like this conversation at all. The thought of Dani leaving him made him grip his belly as though an icy hole was threatening to open up. He liked being a Johnny’s. He liked acting and singing. It was an abundant amount of work, and that wasn’t even taking his schooling into consideration. Having Dani in his life was something that kept him sane. Her laughter, her support, her comfort, the way he could discuss anything with her, or not talk at all and feel her affection for him fill the room when they were together… These were like breathing to him. They were being so careful; trying to keep their relationship secret so there would be no threat to either of them, and still be able to have quality time together.
“I can’t stop him once he’s twenty,” his mother stated.
“Why didn’t you just tell him you disapproved?” Dani asked. “I’m very sorry this upsets you.”
Tegoshi had to stop this. He stepped forward, and banged his hip into the edge of a sideboard table, knocking something over. “Yuya!” his mother greeted. “You must be hungry! We’ve eaten, but I kept some for you.”
He glanced up, and caught Dani staring at him. She knew he’d heard. He could see it in her eyes. She always told him she could read his emotions in his eyes. They were obviously two of a kind that way because her eyes were like a window letting him see into her heart. It was how he’d known, from the first moment they ever spoke, that she felt something for him. And right now he caught the small shake of her head. She was asking him not to say anything yet.
“Yuya,” his grandmother entered, smiling and pausing to pat his cheek with affection. “I like her. She’s polite, respectful, and when anyone says your name her eyes glow and she smiles. Just like how you’ve been glowing since you’ve been together. You’re happy.” She tilted her head curiously, staring into his eyes, and he forced a smile. She turned away then. “Sit down, eat. Afterwards you can take the sensei home,” she gave a small chuckle, and elbowing him slightly as she winked.

The Present
“Whoa, so your mother didn’t really approve?” Ryo asked, startled.
“Not really,” Koyama held up a hand. “She admitted she was worried for Tesshi’s future. It’s normal for a parent to worry like that.”
“Yeah, but she knew he liked Dani and wanted to be with her. He told her that,” argued the dark haired man. “She should have voiced her worries and doubts then. This was like a month after Tesshi and Dani got together.”
“He has a point there,” Shige interrupted. “Tesshi could have handled the situation from the beginning, which he thought he had, instead of after they’d been together for so long. Their feelings would only get stronger. Dani wouldn’t want there to be unhappiness between Tesshi and his mother.”
“His grandmother approved,” Masuda reminded. “So that was a good thing.” He glanced at Tegoshi. “And?”
Tegoshi sighed. It was refreshing to hear their points of view. He’d been furious with his mother. Not wanting to embarrass or humiliate Dani he’d held back voicing his emotions until next day, purposely staying out until his curfew so he could go straight to bed when he got home. “I couldn’t eat. I was so angry with my mother for saying those things to Dani. She should have spoken to me!”
“But she already knew how you felt,” YamaPi interrupted. “She wanted to learn Dani’s heart. Did Dani love you enough to leave you if she had to do so for your sake? That’s what your mother needed to know.”
He hadn’t considered it that way. That did make sense. But it was a little too late to bridge the gap that had formed at that time between himself and his mother. Didn’t matter now, anyway. Not after what had happened.
“What about with Dani?” Koyama suddenly asked. “Obviously you took her home after. Did you discuss it?”
Tegoshi tilted his head, wincing. “Well… We had our first fight that night, which wasn’t a pretty thing. Even when I was chasing after her and she kept trying to hold me back we never argued like this.”
“And?” the others all finally chorused as one after he said no more.
