Kelly felt her stomach turn as she looked at her computer. She quickly pulled out her cell phone, dialing her manager's number.
"Hello?" came the tired reply.
Kelly looked at the clock, "It's one in the afternoon. What are you doing sleeping?"
"Late night," Jeff replied.
"Is it true?"
"Is what true?"
"Was he really escorted off stage?"
Jeff sighed.
"I can't believe this," Kelly shook her head. "He really hates the songs that much that he'd go down every single one in front of a room full of executives just to say how bad each one was?"
"How'd you find out?"
"I got an email apologizing from his people. Gotta love it when I get apologies for things I didn't even know happened."
"I just didn't think you wanted to hear about it."
"You were there, Jeff. You should've told me. Actually, you should've been the one to stop him."
"Kelly, look, I'm already on thin ice with your record company. They definitely aren't my biggest fans."
"So? You're my manager. It's your job to fight for me."
"I didn't want to make a scene."
"Of course not," she replied sarcastically.
"Look, I know you're upset right now, but think about it. Did you want me to make a scene? Do you want word of this getting out?"
"Well, someone did make a scene. It should've been you. And so what if word gets out?"
"Word gets out and you seem like some diva crying because she didn't get her way."
"Or I seem like an artist willing to fight for what's right. I've been through this with every album. It'll turn out fine. Just next time could you please stand up for me? Even if not as my manager, as my friend? It would be nice, you know?"
"I'm sorry, Kelly."
Kelly took a calming breath, "Thanks. I'll talk to you later. Try and not be hung over next time, huh?"
"Bye."
"Bye," Kelly hung up the phone, tossing it aside.
"Wow. Heated words," Ashley noted. "Now is he a slimeball?"
"Ash..."
"Sorry, sorry," she raised her hands in surrender as she sat next to her on the couch.
"What's today's date?"
"The tenth."
Kelly looked at the clock thoughtfully before reaching back for her phone, dialing another number.
"Hey," came the cheerful reply.
"Hey, Kate. I heard a rumor you're in town for a couple days. Do you have any plans tonight?"
Ashley's eyebrows flew up, "Booty call?"
Kelly pushed her away.
"Um, no, I'm free tonight. Why?"
"Well, I have an extra ticket to go see The Wreckers tonight. I heard you mention a couple times you liked them. You want to come?"
"Yea, definitely," Kate quickly agreed. "That sounds great."
"Cool, I'll pick you up at like six-thirty. That sounds good?"
"Yea, of course."
"Ok. See you soon."
"Bye," Kate replied.
Kelly hung up the phone to find Ashley smirking at her, "What?"
"You just booty called a straight girl. You realize that that makes absolutely no sense, right?"
"I'm not looking for sex. I'm looking for a distraction, and I get to spend the night with a gorgeous girl with absolutely no pressure or nerves about what's going to happen at the end of the night. How does that not make sense?"
Ashley looked at her curiously.
"I'm right, aren't I?"
"Yea," she agreed. "You've gotten smart in your old age."
"Oh, hush up. I'm only twenty-four. And you're just a few months younger than me, anyway."
"Booty call," Ashley teased.
"You're hopeless," Kelly laughed standing.
"Where are you going?"
"Gotta get ready. I pick up my booty call at six-thirty."
Ashley laughed, tossing a pillow at her, "You're such a dork."
++++++++
"Hey," Kate smiled as she opened the door to find Kelly standing on the other side.
"Hey," Kelly gave her a quick hug. "You ready?"
"Definitely," she nodded, following her back to her car and getting in. "This is so cool. So how'd you get tickets?"
"I'm actually pretty good friends with them."
"Is there anybody that you aren't friends with?"
Kelly laughed, "You know there are a couple people that I could do without, yea."
Kate smiled, "You look cute by the way. Love the cowgirl boots."
"I know, right," Kelly glanced down at her feet. "I figured I'd get into the whole country theme."
"No cowboy hat?"
"Actually, there may be one in the backseat if you can find your way through all the junk back there."
Kate reached back, finding the hat on the floor. She placed it on the Texan's head with a giggle, "Perfect."
"Yea?" Kelly looked into the rearview mirror as they stopped at a red light. "I could totally be a cowgirl."
"Absolutely."
"So, I talked to Michelle before I picked you up, and she said they'd love to meet you if you want. I mean, I was planning on going say hi before the show anyway, and I just figured you'd want to come with me."
"Oh, yea, definitely," Kate smiled excitedly.
"Cool," Kelly nodded. "So, where's Jill that you're stranded in Texas by yourself."
"Back home."
"L.A.?"
"No, home, home. One of her good friends from back in high school just had a baby. I didn't know the girl, and I didn't feel like staying in L.A. by myself, so I went down to Nashville to visit some friends, but they were coming here to see their parents, and I haven't seen their parents in forever so I just followed along."
"Must be pretty cool friends to have family in Texas."
Kate laughed softly.
"But yea, can't blame you on not wanting to stay by yourself out there. I'd take Nashville over L.A. any day."
"And Texas over Nashville," Kate nodded knowingly.
"Without a doubt."
"What about if your career depended on it?" Kate asked curiously.
"Depended on what?"
"Your living in L.A. What if the only way for you to keep your music career was for you to live in L.A. Would you do it?"
"No," Kelly said surely. "I can't live there. There's no question about it, I just can't. At times, I was working so much that I was practically living there, and I couldn't take it."
"The people?"
"Everything. I just...I felt as if I wasn't myself over there, and I didn't like feeling that."
Kate nodded, "Yea, I get that. It can definitely be trippy living there."
"I'm actually thinking about moving my music stuff to Nashville. Letting go of my rent house in L.A., buying a nice little house somewhere nearby, and just working from there."
"Country music?"
"No, well, maybe one day, but I just need a change for my own sanity," she laughed softly.
"Yea, I wouldn't mind moving out there one day if we could get the money."
"Hey, if you need a loan or something--"
"No, no, not money house wise. Money career wise. It's just that we're pop, so everything for us is in L.A. Our career is nowhere near stable enough to make a move out there."
Kelly nodded in understanding, "Well, hey, if y'all ever need help with anything--money, music contacts, whatever--let me know, and I'll gladly help y'all out."
"Thanks, but that's alright. I don't want to feel like we're taking advantage of you."
"No, don't even worry about it. I think y'all are great, and I love your music. Y'all deserve to make it."
"Thanks," Kate smiled. "That means a lot coming from someone like you."
"Someone like me? Oh, you mean someone totally kick ass, right?"
"Totally," Kate laughed softly, tapping the Texan's cowboy hat, making her grin.
++++++++
Kate giggled as Kelly pulled out her license to show to the security guard, "I love that nobody recognizes you."
"Yea, yea," Kelly rolled her eyes playfully, smiling as the guard apologized before handing the pair of them backstage passes. She took Kate's hand, weaving her way through the small crowd back there before finding the dressing room.
"Wow, you're really good at that."
"I've been here before. Plus I gotta pee, so I'm in a hurry," she laughed softly, knocking on the door a couple times before opening it to reveal the duo going through vocal warm ups. "Man, y'all sound horrible," she beamed.
The two singers turned to them, both wearing a smile that matched the short Texan's before rushing to her.
Kate watched as Kelly was pulled into a tight hug by Jessica, then Michelle, the latter of which left a chaste kiss on her lips.
Kelly smiled, "Hey."
"Hey, glad y'all could make it," Michelle returned the smile.
"This is Kate," Kelly introduced. "She's one of my backup singers."
"Oh hey," Michelle held out her hand. "Nice to meet you."
"You too. I love y'alls music."
"Thanks."
"Hey, I gotta pee," Kelly announced, shifting from foot to foot.
Jessica laughed, "Come on, dork. I gotta go get my makeup finished, so I'm walking that way anyway."
"Thanks," Kelly let out a relieved sigh, following her through a door.
"So...you and Kelly?" Michelle asked as she and Kate stood, watching the door the other two singers had walked through.
"Me and Kelly what?" Kate asked curiously.
"Y'all are together?"
"What? Me and Kelly? No...I'm not...I mean, I'm..."
"Straight?" she offered.
"Yea," Kate gave a soft laugh.
Michelle tried to hide her smile.
"What about you?"
"And Kelly?"
"Yea, I mean, were y'all ever..."
"Together?"
"Yea."
"Yea," Michelle nodded.
"Was it serious?"
"Kelly?" she raised an eyebrow as she turned to her. "Serious? Never."
"What do you mean?"
"She's more about having fun. She stays as far away from serious relationships as possible. Instant gratification."
Kate's mouth opened in shock.
"That made her sound like a whore, huh?" She shook her head, "I just meant that the longest relationship she's had was less than three weeks. She has a problem with commitment."
"Has she had a lot of girlfriends?" Kate questioned.
"Not at all. I can count them all on one hand, minus a finger or two."
"And the instant gratification thing..."
"Are you asking if she's a whore?"
Kate shrugged, her cheeks a light pink.
"You know how I said I can count her girlfriends on one hand?"
She nodded.
"Yea, well, less than that."
"Good."
"Good?" Michelle looked at her questioningly.
"Yea, I mean, she just seems kinda innocent, I guess, and I like that about her."
"Yea," she nodded as the Texan came bouncing back into the room. "Definitely a kid at heart."
"What'd I miss?" Kelly asked, walking up to them with a grin.
++++++++++
"Having fun?" Kelly turned to Kate after the country duo on stage finished a song.
"Yea, this is awesome," Kate nodded.
"Good. But hey, I have to go make a call real quick. I'll be right back, ok?"
"You're ok going by yourself?" Kate asked curiously.
"Oh, yea, people don't get like crazy around me."
"Ok..." Kate eyed her skeptically.
"I'll be back soon," Kelly smiled, taking the cowboy hat off and placing it on the blonde's head. "Now, that's hot."
Kate laughed, shaking her head as she turned back to the stage.
++++++++++
Kate watched as Jessica Harp introduced the band's next song 'Cigarettes'. She felt her fingers strumming against the railing in front of her. Her eyes followed Michelle Branch, trying to picture her and Kelly together as a couple, but the image in her head just didn't seem right. She raised an eyebrow as Michelle turned to the side of the stage nodding at someone.
Kate leaned forward, trying to see, but couldn't see who was behind the post that was on the side of the stage. The first chorus ended and Michelle stepped up to the microphone. She missed the first part of her statement, looking around for the short Texan that had never returned, but the sound of her name instantly caught her attention.
"...Kelly Clarkson!"
Kate's jaw dropped as Kelly came out to center stage, picking up the song from the second verse. She smiled as she caught the Texan's eye, the smile growing as the short girl continued to sing, getting more in to the song as she reached the bridge. Kate shook her head in awe, wondering if she'd ever be able to have the ease on stage that Kelly seemed to bring.
+++++++++
"Hey," Kelly greeted in Kate's ear from behind, causing her to jump.
"Hey," Kate turned around with a smile, giving her a hug. "That was great."
"Yea? It was a lot of fun. Jessica had asked if I wanted to do something, so I was like sure," Kelly shrugged. "Did it sound ok? I didn't completely ruin the song did I?"
"Of course not," Kate laughed. "Although I do have to say...you kinda have hat hair."
"Really?"
"Yea," she giggled, taking the hat off and placing it back on the other girl's head.
"Eh, screw it. It was fun," Kelly grinned.
+++++++++
"So, thanks for this," Kate smiled as Kelly pulled into the driveway. "I had a lot of fun."
"I'm glad," Kelly nodded. "I heard you were in town by yourself, and I had an extra ticket, so I figured it'd be something fun to do."
"It was."
"So, this is your friend's parents' house?"
"Yea."
"He's a singer too?"
"Song writer."
"That's cool."
"Yea, he's fun, and his wife's a real sweetheart. You'll have to meet them sometime."
"Sure," Kelly agreed. "And hey, if next time you're in Texas, you need a place to stay, feel free to call. Seriously I have way too many spare rooms."
Kate nodded, "Alright."
"And even if you don't need a place, call me and we'll go do something. Trust me, you haven't seen Texas until you've seen it with an insider."
"Ok," she giggled.
Kelly smiled, "So, thanks for coming."
"Thanks for inviting me," she replied, reaching over for a hug.
"Anytime, hun."
Kate smiled mischievously.
"What?"
"So...was I a good booty call?"
Kelly's jaw dropped.
Kate laughed loudly, "Sorry...sorry...I heard Ashley when you called me earlier."
Kelly shook her head, chuckling, "That's just not right."
"Why not? I thought it was funny."
"You're such a tease," she smiled.
"Tease? How am I a tease? Don't you have to want something from me in order for me to be a tease?"
Kelly laughed softly, "I like you. You get it...although you kinda don't, but you do..."
Kate raised an eyebrow.
"The no pressure thing...well, never mind, but trust me, it makes sense in my head, and you get it."
"Well that's good. I hate being out of the loop."
"Yea," Kelly nodded.
Kate frowned slightly.
"What's wrong?"
"I feel like I should tell you something..."
"Is it that you're just dying to come out? Because trust me, no need to be nervous about telling me that...nothing would make me happier than to show you the way," she grinned.
Kate laughed, "You're such a dork."
"I'm just being honest," she smiled.
"Yea, but no, it's not that. I just...before the concert when you went to the bathroom, I was talking to Michelle about some stuff, and I didn't want her to ask you about it and for you to think I was going behind your back or something."
"Aw, well, that's sweet that you told me. Can I ask what y'all talked about?"
"Just you...and her...and a little about the girls you dated...and slept with..." Kate looked at her nervously.
Kelly reached over giving her knee a gentle squeeze, "Hey, no worries."
"No?"
"No, of course not," she shook her head. "And actually, if you have any questions about me, you know you can just ask. I'm seriously very open."
"Ok," Kate nodded.
"Ok...so while, I'd love to sit here and talk to you all night, I have a really early morning tomorrow, and Jason will kill me if I oversleep."
"Oh, yea, no problem," Kate smiled, reaching over for another hug. "Thanks for tonight. It was fun."
"Yea, I'm glad you enjoyed it."
"See you soon," she gave a small wave as she got out of the car.
