Let’s see, if you were to look up the word awkward in the dictionary I’m almost positive that my picture, along with my brother’s and his fiancé’s, would be posted right below its meaning as examples. What would the definition read?
Awkward [awk-werd]
-adjective
Requiring caution; hard to deal with; difficult; somewhat hazardous.
I suppose all of the above mentioned could no doubt effectively be used to describe that of which I love to call my current situation, state of royally fucked.
I’m telling you, there can’t possibly be anything more awkward than standing a couple of inches away from your brother after having made out with his fiancé but a couple of moments ago. Okay, so I can think of quite a few other awkward situations I could be facing right now, however, all of those scenarios involve the girl currently standing next to my older brother.
Ashley is standing beside me like some god damn five year old with a big secret. Luckily I’ve known the girl long enough to know that she won’t utter a word of what she saw transpire during our supposed friendly game of laser tag. I knew there was a good reason I kept her around, no matter how much of a pain in the ass she could be, she was one helluva loyal friend.
I’m leaning against Ashley’s car trying to act as nonchalant as possible, but I can’t seem to keep my eyes off the damn girl. Get your shit together Kelly. I can tell from the look on Carrie’s face that she is also having a difficult time trying not to look at me, her not so subtle stares aren’t really helping her much either; that and the fact that our eyes keep meeting here and there.
Ashley nudges me hard with her shoulder, successfully managing to knock me out of my dream state. “So, tonight was fun ya’ll. It was good seeing you again, Care, we should all get together and do this again sometime.” Ashley suggests. I’d think it was a good idea if I didn’t have complete lack of faith in myself that I would only cross further over a line I’ve already crossed. Shit, the line is pretty much invisible now.
I manage to pretend like it’d be a totally good idea for us all to get together again. “Yeah.”
My brother wraps an arm around Carrie’s waist as Boo and Jess make their way out of Main Event. Seriously, how long did it take to use the bathroom? Ew. Well, looks like I wasn’t the only one trying to cash in on some action.
“Well,” Jason started, tugging Carrie more snuggly into his side, “Care’s Twenty-Sixth birthday is coming up in a couple weeks, we were planning a little bash at the house for it.”
I catch a glimpse at Carrie’s face as she shifts her neck to give my brother a side glance. Something tells me that “the house” he speaks of, is hers, and she’s not really fond of how he just inadvertently called it theirs instead of hers. Well Care, ya’ll are engaged, better get used to that whole what’s mine is yours and yours is mine bullshit while there’s still time.
She smiles and it’s fake. I can definitely tell the difference between when she smiles for real and when she’s pretending. God, how fucking lame do I sound right now? I can tell when the girl is faking a smile after only knowing her for what – a weekend? Hell yes I can, and though I obviously won’t admit this out loud of course, I have spent the entire fucking week since said weekend just thinking about that smile. That real smile, not that fake shit she just gave my brother.
Okay shut up now Kelly and quit having a conversation with yourself, she’s talking now. “Yeah, ya’ll should come on out, it’d be nice. Just a couple of my friends will be there, and ya’ll and whoever you’d want to bring of course...” She trails off, leaving her sentence open as she looks in my direction. She’s definitely pretty much telling me not to bring anybody with me.
“Well, Ashley you can be my plus one, since we all know you won’t have anyone else to bring.” I teased, nudging my best friend.
Our small group laughs quietly before we all fall into a short silence. “Well guys, it’s getting kind of late, Boo and I should head on home now.”
I raise an eyebrow but Ashley beats me to the punch. “To finish some things ya’ll didn’t get to finish in the bathroom?”
Jess blushes and flips Ashley off. “Don’t be mad at her because she’s getting some.” Jason shouts out to Ashley.
I watch Ashley open her mouth really quickly to respond and then just as quickly she shuts it. I know she badly wanted to shout a comeback to my brother, but I have no doubts that her comeback would have included me and Carrie, and well, that just wouldn’t have been good.
She concedes instead. “Touché’.”
“Night guys,” Boo and Jess say, quickly excusing themselves from the group.
“So we’ll keep ya’ll posted on the deets of the party, okay?” Did my brother seriously just say “deets” and think he sounded cool. Yes, I think he really did.
I chuckle softly and nod. “Yeah, okay Jase, keep us posted on them deets.”
Ashley bumps me with her hip. “Alright sexy, we should get out of here, you have work tomorrow and even though it’s not that late, I have a feeling we’re going to be up for a while talking since I’m staying over your place.” Really, you’re staying over tonight? I guess I missed the part where I invited you over to stay.
“It was good seeing you again, Care.” Even though I probably shouldn’t, I step forward anyways and pull her into a quick hug. God she feels so good in my arms, pressed up against me.
“Yeah, you too, we’ll see you guys soon.” She says, smiling and staring me dead in the eye as I pull out of her arms.
Jason points at me and Ashley. “You two drive home safe.”
“Ya’ll too; we’ll see you guys later.” Ashley responds, making her way around the car to the driver’s side.
We all say our final goodbyes and goodnights and I watch my brother and Carrie descend across the parking lot towards Carrie’s truck.
“Okay Romeo, get in the car.” I glance at her over the hood of the car and glare before pulling the door open and lowering myself into the car.

I roll over onto my stomach, my face beet red as I glance up at my friend trying to make sure I heard her correctly. “What did you say?” I laugh harder, burying my face into the mattress for a moment before finally glancing back up.
Ashley rolls from on her back to her side and props her hand up under her chin for support. “Oh you heard me!” She shouts, pushing my shoulder before she decides to repeat herself. “Since you wanna play dense I guess I’ll have to repeat myself…does Carrie speak homo?”
I shake my head. “And I’m supposed to know this how exactly?”
My friend pushes up into a sitting position and folds her legs Indian style. “I’m not the one with the gaydar.” She replies matter-of-factly.
I roll back onto my back and stare at her. “Well, my shit has been off…hell, I don’t think it’s ever been on, so I don’t know.”
“So she just makes out with other women in the dark for the hell of it?”
I shrug. “That was just-“
“A clear indication that there is something most definitely lurking under the surface, my friend,” Ashley points out, “I would never make out with another girl just because, with the exception of that time you kissed me. I didn’t want to hurt your feelings.”
I rolled my eyes. “You suck Ash, can you stop bringing that up already? I mean I know I left a lasting impression on you and everything but really, you need to get over it.”
My phone vibrating loudly against my nightstand momentarily broke us out of our conversation as I sat up quickly to retrieve it. I found Ashley moving with me though, straddling my lap and pushing me back against the mattress with hardly any effort at all before I had the chance to get to it.
“Ooh new text message.” She squealed excitedly as she began to read the message out loud. “My back is bruised.” She chuckled loudly and wiggled her hips against mine. “Wow, you’re a rough one KC.”
I glared at Ashley. “Oh my god, I swear you’re going to give me enough nightmares to last a lifetime, now get the hell off of me.” I whined while shoving her off my lap and snatching my phone from her hand in the process.
Sighing in relief I sat up on the mattress and began to type a response. I’m really sorry about that. I think I need to be put in a bubble lol
Ashley glanced down at the text even as I tried to keep the message out of view. “You’re so damn nosey.” I complained, pushing up from the bed.
“Yeah, and you’re super lame so whatever. You couldn’t think of anything better to say?”
I rolled my eyes and made my way out of my bedroom for a moment, waiting for Carrie’s response as I walked down the hallway towards my kitchen.
You and me both
I smiled and flicked the light on in the kitchen behind me as I entered.
I had a lot of fun though
I set my phone down on the counter for a moment and turned towards the fridge to get a bottle of water. When I turned back towards the counter I found myself frowning. She didn’t respond back. Maybe she didn’t have fun.
Shrugging my shoulders I picked my phone up from the counter, flicked the light back off, and made my way back down my short hallway to my bedroom.
“Are ya’ll having textual intercourse…you want some privacy?” Ashley teased.
I shot her a dry look before plopping down onto my bed. “Nah, nothing that exciting,” I replied sarcastically as I rolled my eyes and felt my face light up somewhat when I felt my phone vibrate in my hand.
When I read her words though, I felt my face fall again. What are we going to do now?
I slid up further onto the bed until I was resting against Ashley’s knee. Without a word I extended the phone towards her and allowed her to read the text. I bit my bottom lip and waited for her to say something.
“Shit, I don’t know, Kel, I know you like the girl and I know she likes you…but Jason…” I sighed.
My brother was a douche for asking the girl to marry him after only six months, and an even bigger douche for springing it on the girl like he had when they had hardly even discussed it beforehand. But if those things made him a douche, what the hell did what I was considering to do make me?
I don’t know. I replied back honestly.
I rolled away from Ashley. “We should probably get some sleep now.” I suggested, reaching out for the lamp on my nightstand without another word, watching the darkness fall around us as I switched my phone from vibrate to silent and placed it back onto my nightstand.
“Yeah, night Kel.”
“Night Ash.”
