Standing in the open doorway of J. Alexander’s Kelly surveyed the lobby until she spotted the familiar blonde sitting off alone in a booth near the back of the restaurant. With a smile on her face she allowed the door to swing shut behind her as she stepped inside and made her way over to the other girl who sat waiting for her.
“Hey.” She spoke loud enough to catch her attention.
Instantly Kate glanced up from the menu spread before her at the sound of the familiar voice, a wide smile spreading across her face.
“Hey,” She responded, pushing her menu to the side, “I was beginning to think you weren’t going to show.” She teased.
Kelly shook her head and lowered her purse down onto the seat across from Kate as she slid into the booth.
“They do have to let me eat ya know.” She said with a laugh while reaching out for her own menu, “But we wrapped for the day so I’m all yours.” She finished, casually sliding her foot under the table and playfully running it along Kate’s jean clad leg.
She watched Kate’s cheeks turn a light shade of crimson as she propped her hand up under her chin and cautiously looked around the room.
“Relax,” Kelly encouraged, retracting her foot while continuing to scan through her menu, “It may be crowded in here but we are in the back, and we’re in Nashville…its way more low key. Besides, look at me.” She finished with a short laugh and a nod down to her current appearance.
“I am looking.”
Kelly smiled and set her menu against the table. “Liking what you see?”
“Oh very much” Came Kate’s quick response.
“Good to know.” Kelly murmured softly, her smile widening.
Both girls quietly picked their menus back up and continued searching for something that would pop up at them.
“So your session went well today then, since it wrapped early?”
Kelly nodded her head at her girlfriend without lifting her eyes towards her. “Yeah, Care was ridiculously on her A game today, made me look like a damn amateur.”
Kate made an expression that she was relieved Kelly hadn’t caught. She didn’t feel like having this conversation again right now. Not in public.
“I’m sure you were as amazing as always.”
The waiter approached them, cutting their current conversation short. After they placed their order and the waiter walked away, Kate decided she’d change the previous topic to something less likely to start an argument between the two of them.
Fumbling with her hands she caught Kelly’s gaze with her own her eyes and offered a slight smile.
“So you know how Jill and I are renting that apartment out here?” She asked casually.
Kelly nodded, waiting for her to continue.
“Well, since you’ve pretty much been there every day since you’ve been in town recording I was kind of wondering if maybe you’d um…like to move in with us?”
Kelly’s eyes dropped from Kate’s for a moment before she finally forced herself to look back up. What was she supposed to say to that? She wasn’t sure how much longer she’d be in Nashville recording the duet with Carrie. It was like they practically lived together now anyways. If she wasn’t in Nashville right now recording Kate would have been back in Texas with her. But was she really ready to take that step?
Sensing Kelly’s hesitation Kate finally spoke up again. “I’m sorry, it was a stupid question. Just forget I brought it up.”
“No, no Kate,” Kelly began sweetly, reaching out and taking Kate’s hand into her own, “It wasn’t a stupid question. I’m just an idiot and started having a conversation with myself in my head, you know how I get.”
“Weighing out the pros and cons?” Kate questioned knowingly.
Kelly released her hold on Kate’s hand and pulled her own back towards herself. “Yeah, my brain starts to over analyze things sometimes and I—“
Kate cut her off. “Seriously just forget I asked it. It was stupid.”
“I’d love to.” I think.
She watched as Kate’s expression changed almost instantly.
Her face lit up. “Really?”
“Yeah, really.” She said, smiling politely.
“That’s great!” She exclaimed loudly before slapping her hand over her mouth and slowly uncovering it, “I’m sorry,” she laughed, “I got a little excited.”
Kelly let out a soft laugh and reached back across the table to take her girlfriends hand. “It’s okay. How about we head back to the apartment after we eat and see if Jill is down for a girl’s night out tonight?”
She gave Kelly’s hand a gentle squeeze. “Sounds like a plan.”
Catching sight of the waiter approaching them from behind Kate’s head, Kelly once again retracted her hand, wondering if she had made the right choice.
Holding the bottom part of her eyelid down and slightly rolling her eye upward, Kate drew the black liner towards her eye. She applied a thin line before drawing the sharpened pencil away from her eye and examining her work. Bringing the pencil towards her eye again she caught sight of Jill entering her room through the reflection in the mirror.
“It’s times like this that makes you miss Ashley, huh?”
Choosing to momentarily ignore her roommate and the topic that Ashley would lead them to, Kate carefully moved on to her other eye. Jill continued to step into her room without being invited to come in, stopping a few inches behind her and trying to catch her eye in the mirror.
“Katie.” She said sharply, placing a stern look on her face as she waited for Kate to finally lower her pencil and avert her eyes towards hers.
She held her friends gaze in the mirror without bothering to turn around. “What?”
Jill’s expression softened as she kept her eyes locked on her friends. “It’s Kelly…”
Kate shrugged her shoulders while dropping her gaze. “What about her, her and the wife having another kid? Send my congratulations.” She replied sarcastically, going back to her task at hand.
Releasing a heavy sigh Jill grasped Kate by the shoulders and slowly turned her until she was forced to face her.
“Seriously, what the hell Jill? I haven’t seen or heard from Kelly in a long time, she has her own life now and we have our own. Aside from what little I read about her in the tabloids, I could care less about what’s going on with her.” She shrugged out of Jill’s grasp and quickly turned her back to her friend again.
“She was in a car accident, Kate. Well her and Carrie and Lyra all were, but—“
Jill trailed off as she watched Kate force herself back around to face her. Kate stood unblinking, the eyeliner pencil dangling loosely in her hand.
“W-what?” She choked out, staring back at Jill dumbstruck, wondering if she’d heard her correctly. “How do you know that? Tabloids like to make stuff up right? It’s just a lie, she’s okay, right?”
Jill gently placed her hands on Kate’s shoulders and offered a friendly smile. “She’s doing okay now. Ashley said that some of her memory is a bit fuzzy right now but that—“
Kate pulled back slightly and Jill caught that momentarily flicker of betrayal in her eyes. “You’ve been talking to Ashley?”
Jill blinked at her friends sudden mood shift and sighed. “I was flipping through the TV and I saw a news station talking about the accident, I grew concerned. I have been keeping in touch with Ash here and there over the years though, yes.”
Kate opened her mouth to protest but Jill held her hand up. “No, don’t talk, I’m talking right now. I know shit went sour with you guys when Carrie came along, but she was a good friend of yours at one point before all of that, Kate. I won’t let you stand there and pretend you don’t care right now because I saw it in your eyes that you do when I told you.”
“She used to be a good friend, yeah, but then she easily became a bitch who broke my heart so I’m sorry if I’m having a hard time caring right now.” She turned her back again and set her pencil down onto her vanity, forcing herself to keep her eyes down so she didn’t have to look at Jill.
Jill groaned and tossed her hands up in frustration. “Whatever, I’ll let you pretend that you’re actually not caring right now and while you’re busy doing that I’m going to book us a flight to Texas.” She announced casually, quickly shifting on her heel and making a move towards the door.
Kate turned around, leaning back against her vanity for support. “Wait, I thought she and Carrie lived in Nashville?” She asked confused.
Pausing in the doorway Jill placed her hand against the door frame and glanced over her shoulder. “They do, but Jeanne wants to take Kel back home for a little bit while she’s recovering, so that’s where we’re going.”
Crossing her arms over her chest stubbornly Kate narrowed her eyes at Jill. “No, that’s where you’re going. I’m not stepping foot in Texas ever again, no way. Especially not when she’s there.”
“Well you better suck it up, Katie, because we’re going. Me and you.”
“B-but don’t we have shows lined up out here? And not to mention our upcoming shows lined up outside of Los Angeles.” Kate protested.
Jill nodded and pushed away from the door frame. “Yep, and our first stop is Texas, so you may want to start packing.”
She wasn’t sure of what she wanted to accomplish with forcing Kate to come along with her to check up on Kelly, but she knew that this reunion was long over due. Although she knew that the two of them wouldn’t ever be together again as anything more than friends she also knew that they needed to restore their friendship in at least some form. And she was determined to make that happen for them before Kate, and even Kelly, woke up one day and regretted ever letting things get so out of hand.
